And now for something completely different. Todd Levin is a young composer whose music is a meld of adventurous neo-romanticism (mixed with a Broadway show-tune ambience) wherein the orchestra plays and Todd Levin himself speaks over, under, and around the ongoing orchestral procession. The disc, however, begins with Blur, fantastic orchestral set with the most daring (and harmonious) brass exchange you'll ever hear. I mean ever. Everyday then takes off, and I mean takes off. Levin appears with his hilarious narration (about composing) with Mary Nessinger singing her refrains in the background. This is a fantastic disc. Highly recommended. --Paul Cook

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT!.......2003-04-12

Recently went to hear an orchestral concert which had a work by Todd Levin on the program. Couldn't believe how terrific the piece was, so I bought this disc. The disc is even better. I totally agree with the amazon.com editorial review - this is highly recommended. It's completely unlike anything I've ever heard before in classical music.... more to the point, it smashes through whatever preconceived notions or boundaries I thought were construed to be "classical." It's the first truly contemporary classical music I've ever heard in my lifetime, and by this I don't mean contemporary in its actual sound, but rather in its conceptual stance. The third piece on the disc, titled "Todd Levin," is the real centerpiece, a self portrait of the composer as a young man. Everybody should listen to this piece once - it'll be sure to polarize and exhaust people, but you'll definitely never forget it. Powerful, powerful stuff...

5 out of 5 stars Original work that deserves more exposure........2002-07-28

I purchased "DeLuxe" about five years ago and never tire of its clever juxposition of biting wit with "easy listening" music that really is anything but. I hope Todd Levin produces more works of this caliber. The London Symphony (well known for its ability to meld pop with classical) was superb on this recording. I highly recommend this highly original work.

    3 out of 5 stars Blur.......2000-06-06

I attended a concert by the Minnesota Orchestra featuring works by modern composers, and Levin's work Blur was among those presented. I found in the piece a certain resonance with my own lifestyle: frenetic, occasionally discordant, but never dull. I purchased the recording for that reason and continue to enjoy that particular work. By the others, I find myself variously affected. It's definately not the average composition and probably won't appeal to those who look for relaxation in their musical choices.

It's hard to argue with super-stylin' French DJ Dimitri from Paris. Between selling a couple hundred thousand of his debut, Sacrebleu, and then scoring hot and heavy with 2000's A Night at the Playboy Mansion and the three-disc workout Disco Forever, Turkish-born Dimitri seems to only spin gold, and House of Funk is no exception. Recorded originally in 1997 as a compilation for Mixmag magazine, the CD does have its rough spots, but even as a colorless house beat pile-drives the party right up to Mondo Grosso's "Vibe PM," Dimitri's skill in weaving disco strings and horny vocals together with unique tracks makes it all work like a charm. Per usual for him, Dimitri goes further than the average ignorant and insular DJ in finding his mix material. Forget spinning another house track from another unknown "producer," Dimitri blends '80s funk, Latin rhythms, Algerian Rai, new disco, and electro-pop under his beat-heavy banner. Bob Sinclar, Björk, Brand New Heavies, and Cheb Khaled (as well as unknowns Teddy G and Switchblade Sisters) all receive the Dimitri treatment, losing their identity to his in the process. Equal parts sentimental disco cheesemeister and crafty beat-matching style explorer, Dimitri from Paris invites you to shake it under his world-class mirror ball. --Ken Micallef

Anyone in the market for music to make people get up and dance, needs to purchase this. Undoubtedly a leading source of influence in the ever evolving developments of house music, DJ Dimitris album is a necessity for anyone who is a fan of house music or those who just love to boogie!

3 out of 5 stars Not very impressed.......2002-01-23

I own most of Dim's stuff, this is definately "NOT" one of his artistic highpoints. Don't get me wrong, it's entertaining if you want to hear some middle of the road house music but it's not a must have. In case you are looking to purchase some dimitiri, try the playboy mansion, disco forever or his more loungy album sacre(sorry for the messed up spelling)bluuuuuu

    5 out of 5 stars Stoked.......2001-12-28

Okay, shoot me, I didnt buy this CD from Amazon.com, but hey, I still own the CD...

Although Dimitri keeps a somewhat low profile, he mixes some awesome music! Im still very happy that I bought this.

It doesn't matter what type of music you like, Dimitri will put a smile on your face! Every song has a catchy beat and easy rhythm. Another unique thing, unlike most music CD's this one does not use track gaps meaning there are no song conclusions/intros... each song rolls smoothly to the next one without the annoying silence in between your music.

All in all, this album fits in the "New age/Funk/Electronica/Trip hop/Dance house" genre. It would be difficult to classify this CD as one particular type of music as each song is slightly different.

Its almost a sure bet you will enjoy Dimitri, so I recommend it strongly.

    4 out of 5 stars I would give it 4.5 actually.........2001-10-20

its pretty good. Better than most of the cds i have. I especially like that the tracks are pretty varied.. The best track is the last one because its a bjork remix.. and bjork is magical.

The mixing is tight and most of the tracks keep a feel of rolling deep. This is a late night groove that kicks off house touched with jazz. Eventually the groove turns to those housey breaks under jazz for a track or so. My only problems were that no matter how I tried, I couldn't kick enough bass under the tracks. Also I question a few of the track selections. I realize the 'Sometimes' track is his mix, but better mixes are out. The Bjork rant boarders on annoying at certian hours and mindframes. In American terms, this tape could be mistaken for San Fransico house. However, I suspect Monsieur Dimitri hasn't really spent quality time in Chicago. That said, this is the best house mix by a non-American I've heard in 7 years of house devotion.

Ultra-funky beats and basslines compiled with enriching, melodious samples make this CD above all others. The transitions are perfectly timed, leaving a style long enough to completely enjoy but without getting repetitive. It's electronic, but not enough to turn people off. 4 out of 5 stars Not quite deluxe but still entertaining.......2006-10-11

Every lounge compilation has its weaknesses and this one is no exception. Maybe a third of the material might have seemed hip and stylish at the time but now seems a little too commonplace. Another version of "Guantanamera", another version of "Mas Que Nada", orchestral covers of the occasional Beatles or Rolling Stones tunes, done in arrangements which aren't that different from the originals and therefore not that creative, can give a slight "been there, done that" feeling to parts of the set.

Other parts of it are filled with, for lack of a better term, what I call Carnaby Street busyness. Tambourines wildly shaking in the background, notes racing up and down scales, brass blaring loudly, all adding up to nothing much more than music from a cartoon chase scene. Then, just as your attention is wandering to something completely unrelated, such as What is that new spot on the wall or Is that houseplant looking a little shabby, along comes an undiscovered gem, such as Cyril Stapleton's "Love Today, Cry Tomorrow" or "Staccato" by the Eliminators" and your attention is riveted back onto the music, at least for a few cuts, in a way that makes the whole set at least partly worthwhile. Definitely a mixed bag and an up and down ride.

So ultimately the question is this: is this set worth the money? And the answer is certainly yes, as long as your expectations aren't too high. Consider that for a very low price you get three well filled discs, twenty songs apiece, sixty in total, reproduced in clean vivid sixties era stereo. It all comes in a box (with unfortunately absolutely no program notes of any kind.) It's not Capital's universally excellent UltraLounge series (nothing else is) but if you buy it, you won't feel cheated and should actually be quite thrilled to encounter some of the best tracks on it.
