Borderline Deformity
Borderline Deformity, Music, Robbie D.
E. David = Nepenthacea = www.angelfire.com
Robbie in fine form, his voice as flawless and distinct as ever. One of the most unique individuals out there.
DARCY DROLLINGER 2000
Borderline Deformity has a lush, haunting style combining dark smoldering passion with an offbeat and always original, self-assured charm.
Album Description
The CD concentrates on Robbie's unique, increidible vocal ability's, he often sings in a made up language (ala = Cocteau Twins/Sigur Ros). The music runs from trip hop, to alternative pop to haunting country and slow slow blues. The influences of Robbie D.'s music are quite obvious, Portishead, David Lynch, Nina Hagen, Radiohead, Goldfrapp, Talk Talk, Bowie, Peter Murphy, and Marianne Faithfull (when I play the cd, people always think it is a "boy Marianne Faithfull" or a quirky David Bowie"...) Hard to find item. Collaborations with Matmos (who are Bjorks producers and backing band) and Larry Mullins (Iggy Pop's drummer of 9 years, TOBY DAMMIT and drummer with The Swans) Robbie's voice is amazing and eclectic, sometimes sounding like a gorgeous scratchy blues voice and sometimes sounding like a beautiful bird, his range is incredible. Music styles from slow, down tempo, trip hop, to drum and bass. incredible post trip hop number, haunting tribal sounding, kinda Tricky meets Sister Sledge on qualudes. Sparkle is very Mark Hollis, Talk Talk influenced. Keasy is very Bjork meets Dead Can Dance meets Sheila Chandara. Robbie shares his Mormon upbringing with us on "I am a Child of God" (from hell?). Prison Blues (Dear John Deere) is a 100% old skool country tune, modelled in the fashion of Patsy Cline or old Roy Oribison, doused with reverb and slide guitar. Shady lady is straight from the David Lynch/ Angelo Badalamenti school of haunt and blues. I like ICE CREAM is twisted Serio Mendez / Brazil 66 era meets Spacemen 3 or Spritualized. Yum Yum if you ask me.
