Customer Reviews:
good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27
We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.
memories.......2007-02-22
This cd is excellent it has a lot of very good music and true to the original sound, Am getting a lot of enjoyment, highly recomended
TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13
This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.
TV themes.......2006-07-05
Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.
Deja Vu.......2006-02-17
Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

Album Description
We all seek a state of higher consciousness that awakens and enlivens our whole being. Masters of meditation and yoga, great artists, inventors, and highly accomplished people in many walks of life have learned to develop and live from such a state.
British researcher and Zen master C. Maxwell Cade spent decades analyzing the brainwave patterns of these extraordinary people. He discovered that they each shared a common pattern of brainwaves, which Cade called the Awakened Mind Pattern, and which he believed held the key to tapping into one's highest potential.
Created by Dr. Jeffrey Thompson, The Awakened Mind System 2.0 uses breakthrough audio recording processes to help you access this brainwave pattern so that you can directly experience the enormous benefits of this heightened state of consciousness.
Dr. Thompson embeds inaudible pulses of sound that mirror the Awakened Mind Pattern into an ambient musical soundtrack. As you listen, your own brainwaves begin to reflect the Awakened Mind pattern, drawing you easily into states of deep insight, clarity of mind, creative inspiration and peak performance.
Listen as soft background music while working, painting, writing, or enjoying other creative activities. Daily use trains your brain to draw on your deepest capacities and abilities wherever and whenever you need them.
- Based on over 15 years of pioneering clinical research - Use with headphones or ordinary speakers - Contains no spoken words or subliminal messages
Dr. Jeffrey Thompson's pioneering work with thousands of patients has led to groundbreaking discoveries in how sound frequency patterns built into musical soundtracks induce brainwave entrainment. Fortune 500 companies, healthcare professionals, clinics, hospitals, meditation groups, and individuals worldwide use Dr. Thompson's audio programs for deep relaxation, healing, inner exploration, and meditation.
Customer Reviews:
Better than Ritalin.......2007-01-26
Dr. Thompson helps again by giving us a gently energizing CD that helps us focus, think with clarity and get our creative juices flowing. I use this almost daily.
Takes me to another world.......2006-12-15
If you like the first cd then this one is just as good. The first track goes deep into relaxation making me feel like there is life beyond our every day experiences. This cd will make you think as you relax. listen and experience it for yourself.
Dr. of Drones.......2005-03-05
I'm a long time fan of Dr. Thompson and have alot of his material.
Without futher ado; the first track is a great piece of ambience, period. Track 2 is ruined (imo) by a grating hiss that's in your face - or ear.
Seeing that he's both veteran musician and doctor perhaps there's therapeutic value in this. If so, he should've included a brief note in the booklet. But track 1 is long enough...
At first I thought this cd was a sign of him washing out. I think I heard a few disharmonic moments - as in mistakes.
This, along with the unpalatable hissing on track 2 gave me the impression of a cheap commercial plug.
But the second and third time around I found track 1 to be very good indeed. It's certainly not like taking a valium tho as it's
got a balance of brainwaves...as compared to say, the Delta program (which has more than delta but i'm talking concentrations).
Others have said there are better cd's for therapeutic effectiveness. Probably. I have the Insight cd which uses a new layering technique and is supposedly top of the line (ie., as good as centerpoint and tmi's cd's - only cheaper and shorter). But this uses rain as a mask. Very boring but you can Really feel the change in states of consciousness. You can actually feel yourself go into - and out of - alpha/theta/delta. Tho with this, it Could be that with just rain you're more aware of the changes.
So I've a bunch of these types of cd's. Now it could be that I don't listen to them enough. But to me, they really don't do anything - besides the enjoyment of listening of course. To, we all go into these states naturally at night anyway.
I can't stop!.......2005-01-19
This cd makes me feel as though someone stuck their finger in my brain and stirred it around. I can't pinpoint what exactly feels different, but I find myself thinking about turning it on all the time. My boyfriend says it helps his ability to concentrate. We've both been sleeping tremendously better. I didn't understand all those other reviews saying it cures 'the blahs' til now. It really perks me up on a break at work. It's easier to stay grounded. I can't wait to try the others!
Brainwave Maestro Composes A Classic.......2004-10-28
I've been following the works of Dr. Jeffrey S. Thompson since 1989, when an acquaintance gave me a cassette recording of one of his earlier primitive works. "The Doctor" has had, since that time, several phases of innovation which have mainly been a progression from the use of multitudinous sculpted sounds and even "noise" to a much more accessible sound with classical aesthetics of beauty, primarily synthesizer based. He recently has developed a technique of, in his words, "creat[ing] pulses directly within the sounds themselves instead of pasting the music on top of sound pulses" (as is quite common with brainwave composers.) This means the pulse is somewhat "hidden" and one is not distracted from the music. Cool. This disc is completely ambient and therefore a superb meditation tool. I must also mention that this is one of The Doctor's BEST productions since he began using the "wall of synthesis." Sometimes he has had what i thought were glitches of noise perhaps from a dirty potentiometer. But, with Thompson, one never knows if that noise is actually there intentionally. This disc, however, is very clean so headphone use is care-free. Finally, his focus on the "Awakened Mind State" makes this a valuable learning tool for serious consciousness explorers. If I was going to recommend one Thompson disc that is on Amazon to someone who knows nothing about his work, this would be the one.

It's not that Garbage is doing anything particularly new. At times, singer Shirley Manson borrows Chrissie Hynde's phrasing, Patti Smith's rock beat poetry, and Brian Wilson's chorus from "Don't Worry Baby." But producer Butch Vig provides a modern sheen to Version 2.0 that makes it sound fresh and distinctly modern. Purists may blanch--the album is a hybrid of rock guitars, dance rhythms, and pop choruses--but songs such as "I Think I'm Paranoid" (a rip of Elastica) and "The Trick Is to Keep Breathing" (Depeche Mode, without the chill) sound great no matter what they're called. --Keith Moerer
Customer Reviews:
Thundering and sultry.......2007-06-12
Version 2.0 is a very dynamic CD... yes, there are lots of other influences on it, but nothing very original has come out in the electronica genre in many years... everything out there builds on something else. We all have our own tastes and faves, and mine are "Hammering in my Head", "Push It", "The Trick is to Keep Breathing" and "You Look So Fine". "Hammering" and "Push It" have to be listened to very LOUD, preferably on a serious system. The bass on those tracks is seriously fat... and it sounds great. Shirley Manson makes this CD though - in every way.
Rip it all to shreds and let it go.......2007-05-08
If there were a such thing as 90s new wave, this would be it. Here's some awesome techno-influenced rock...this came out almost ten years ago but the songs still sound pretty cool. I don't care if this was directed towards the 14-year-old girl demographic or whatever...I've always really dug this CD, and the one before it. I wish more pop music sounded like this album! It's been said by some that this is Garbage's best, but for me it's a toss up between this one and the debut (I personally think the debut had better lyrics)... in any case the band's music definately went downhill after this point. Not the most original thing in the universe I guess, but for sure still a good listen.
The Pretenders + Romeo Void + Beach Boys + Salt'n'Pepa = Garbage V2.0.......2007-04-13
Naming their sophomore album like it was the latest product from Microsoft made me initially distrust Garbage's second album, but time has really given this a fair shake. More guitar heavy than the debut "Garbage" but cut from a lot of the same cloth, Shirley Manson pouts, preens, breathes heavily and makes like a world class rock lady on the whole album.
My initial frustrations with the album are still there, however. "Version 2.0" There is way too much here that is outright swiped from other artists, and with nary a wink to hide it. Romeo Void pops up in "Sleep Together," The Pretenders are quoted in "Special" (down to Manson singing "Talk of the Town" during the song's fade and Chrissie Hynde getting a thank you in the liner notes), while "Push It" at least gives Brian Wilson and Herbie Azor (the writer behind Salt'n'Pepa) songwriter credits.
That shouldn't stop you from enjoying "Version 2.0." Garbage takes the 'influences' -- and I use that term broadly -- to make memorable music. Butch Vig played some great guitar on this cd, like on "Hammering in My Head." Veering from the giddy new-wave of "Special" to the emotionally delivered ballad "The Trick is to Keep Breathing," this was a band that was in their moment. Nine years later, "Version 2.0" remains a listenable artifact from 1998.
This is a awesome Garbage cd.......2007-03-15
I would definitely buy again from this place
A Sonic Masterpiece.......2007-03-12
This is one record I don't know if I'll ever forget. I've loved it ever since the first time I listened to it. While some jealous Curve fans may dismiss the album (hey, listen to THEIR 2001 album "Gift" back-to-back with this and tell me who's ripping off who), this album is a bit less in use of the backwards guitar effects and wall-of-sound distortion of the debut. It is an electronic rock album, and one of the absolute finest that I've ever heard.
The record can be sexy at times, and it can also be heartbreaking and such at the same time. All 12 songs are amazing. The record begins with the new-wave inspired "Temptation Waits," a Blondie-esque track with lots of hooks and dancier than anything on the debut. "Hammering in My Head" and "Push It" are still as breathtaking as the first time I heard them. "Hammering" shows their artistic experimentalism at its best, and I hear something new in it each time. "Push It" is the main single from the album and quite possibly the greatest. They cleverly borrow from the Beach Boys for a hook and then have a hard-hitting chorus. I hear the album was made with about 120 tracks, and these two tracks certainly make it seem that way. For me, this album is a musical dream. "The Trick Is to Keep Breathing" and "You Look So Fine" show a more tender side of Garbage and are true gems. The former is a bit darker of the two, with the bass lines standing out and then the other one is a well-orchestrated track with some awesome Shirley Manson melodies. There's some quirkier tunes in "Wicked Ways" and "Sleep Together," and then the more straightforward tracks like "Dumb," which wouldn't sound too out of place on the first record.
Experimentation with great songwriting and hooks all over, it's just hard to ignore this record. The debut is good too, but I felt this album was even better, a progression from that one. I never get tired of listening to any of these songs. One of my top five albums of all-time.

Album Description
There are several stages of sleep which people pass through in the course of a good restful night. In each stage our sleep gets deeper, our bodies gets more relaxed and our brainwave patterns slow down. The deepest and most rejuvenating levels of sleep are associated with Delta brainwave patterns.
Delta sleep is the most physically relaxed stage of sleep and is the time when the body recuperates and rebalances itself for the new day. Getting enough sleep, but more specifically enough Delta Sleep, is essential for healthy, productive living.
Dr. Jeffrey Thompson's breakthrough audio techniques, developed over 20 years of clinical research, are proven to increase levels of Delta brainwave activity. He has helped thousands of people to achieve regular, restful, revitalizing sleep.

Sleep and Peace.......2007-06-12
If you have trouble unwinding or falling to sleep, this is a must. I have worked alternating graveyard and daytime shifts for years. This helps calm the mind.
Works great, just wish it wasn't creepy!.......2007-05-15
I would give this 5 stars because it puts me to sleep within 10 minutes...but it's a little creepy sounding and if I do wake up for some reason (cat scratching on the door or something) it always scares me for a minute to wake up to it. It does make me sleep though, so I guess it does it's job.
Delta sleep system 2.0.......2007-04-04
It's not nearly as good as I thought it would be. I got a demo cd from centerpointe about holosync, and just the demo was mind-altering and relaxing. I should have spent my money with them instead. Sorry for the bad review, but I was really disappointed, especially from all the hype about this product.

I wasn't satisfied with this CD. It was nice, but didn't get me to sleep any better.

Lauryn Hill has loudly (and justifiably) been declared a brilliant artist already in her young career, and MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 will do nothing to dissuade anyone. This double-CD acoustic set contains snippets from her debut album, but most of it is new material that Hill performs with raw, shockingly honest intensity. Coming on the heels of a well-publicized period of depression and unhappiness for the ex-Fugees singer, Hill's reenergized outlook is plainly evident in this stripped-down performance--it's basically just Hill and her unplugged guitar--as well as the highly spiritual nature of the material. Cutting across musical styles from bossa nova ("Just Like Water") to Marley-esque rebel songs ("Oh Jerusalem," "The Conquering Lion," "Freedom Time"), the singer's voice is throaty and rough throughout, giving the performance an earthy, heartfelt pull. It's a deeply personal performance, filled with blistering social commentary and the evils of self-delusion while detailing her ongoing attempt to escape from the public persona her fame has created. In destroying her old artistry, she discovers a new creative force, yielding a mesmerizing and enchanting classic. --Jake Barnes
Customer Reviews:
A Voice.......2007-06-30
This CD is a pure step out. A step out in a world where the media is filtering down all expressions. The CD will open your eyes heart and mind if only you let it. Some people Might not Initially get it (Understand) because of where they are in the mind, body and spirit. But like Most revolutionary Art it will be more understood in the future. To think that A diamond multi award winning artist will flop or lose her talents is laughable. She's creating Love, Communicating to people in need,While Bearing herself to create a sense of unity amongst her and her fans. Many artist today create such a image in today's media, that it's hard to relate to their Expression. The album is truth, reality, and a awakening. It's Something Deeper than the usual. There's A voice there that will speak, Uplift, and Touch you. The Chords are Repetitive and simple. The Lyrics are the centerpiece and foreground. If anyone is Debating a purchase or don't get it. READ the lyrics from her site and Youtube search Lauryn Hill. God Bless

excellent.......2007-03-30
...this album was great! I loved this album, it was so honest true. Its an album that is sit back and chill. Its deep/sad... its a lot of things.
Unplugged.......2007-03-29
If your ears are plugged up with music from mains stream media you will be deeply disappointed. With this album she was going through a transformation that only spiritual people (Not religious) are able to relate to. She was singing about life, struggles and the world that we live in.
I am proud of her and respect her a lot because she had the guts to do what many people don't even dream about.
PROLIFIC AND POWERFUL-TRUTH.......2007-03-13
Truth is prolific. Instead of singing about love lost and found. Lauryn talks about solutions to life's problems. She talks about religion as repenting and letting go of all of the things in life that are killing you. This is prolific and ultimately delivered in a way that is both personal and raw. Anyone who doesn't feel this album is unwilling to deal with the truth that Lauryn shares (i.e. "WE ARE ALL A MESS"). There are very few artist that leave you speachless and engrossed in the power of their words and voice. They include Meshelle Ndegeocello, Tracy Chapman, Lauryn Hill, Bob Marley and others. Those are just my favorites. These artist share the truths about life. We all hurt. We all lie. We all cheat ourselves and others. WOW. If you are looking for music that will inspire, motivate and leave you feeling as if you have gone on a journey and come home a better person then you need to listen to this album.

The band whose alumni went on to both the Beautiful South and (improbably) Fatboy Slim was a lot more like the former. Paul Heaton's laconic songs are nicely groomed and innocuous-sounding, with a happy jangle and rich harmonies (the group's interest in gospel extends to technique as well as sentiment), but there is a dryly vicious sense of humor lurking inside them--"Sheep" flips a familiar religious image on its back and leaves its legs waving in the air. London 0 Hull 4, the band's first album, is full of cheerful, taut little tunes about failures of the spirit, barstool sexism, and thermonuclear Armageddon--not to mention love of humanity, which underscored the fact that they weren't just nihilists, they actually cared. --Douglas Wolk
Customer Reviews:
Astounding work of staggering genius :).......2007-06-23
]Okay, so maybe the Housemartins didn't set the world on fire with their first two albums. They disbanded around 1990 and went on to form other groups. But if you were around in the late 80s and listened to PD (Paul) Heaton's amazing vocals and the beautiful songs on this masterpiece, you most likely never forgot it. It's a shame that "Caravan of Love" their a capella stunner isn't on this album and is only available on "best of" compilations. Also, check out the Limited "Best of" Edition [[ASIN:B0001Z48MA The Best of the Housemartins], which includes a DVD of eight of their videos. The Martins are still funny, amazingly talented and socially relevant. They are the greatest band of the 80s that never became famous. Even The Smith's Morrissey is a fan of Paul Heaton.
House Martins..what have you done for me latley?.......2006-11-10
A great band, if you love that 80's sound (I do), too bad there not still turning out the hits, great perspective on life!
Loved this one - but was disappointed with later releases.......2006-09-07
I absolutely love this album. There are only a couple of songs on here that I will skip over, and usually just to get to one of the others a bit sooner! Sarcastic, political commentary wrapped up in wonderful pop tunes. I was surprised that they didn't become any bigger than they did. But I am happy that they got together to produce London 0 Hull 4. I eagerly nabbed their second release, and was thouroughly disappointed with it. Maybe that explains part of why they didn't manage to stick together, though with a live BBC appearance in 2006 it looks like they might have gotten back together again!
Don't let their cuddly exterior fool you........2003-06-06
The Housemartins have a message and they're not afraid to put it plainly. Coming from the 1980s British society that fumbled its way through massive political shifts, they house vitriol in lyricism, like the chorus of "Flag Day" - "It's a waste of time, if you know what I mean / Try shaking your box in front of the Queen / 'Cause her purse is fat and bursting at the seams / It's a waste of time if you know what I mean." But they're equally willing to poke fun at themselves, as with the frenetic and thoroughly uplifting "We're Not Deep" - even though you know they took a page from Twain's warning against symbolism in "Huck Finn".
The Housemartins remain my favorite "80s Nerd Alternative" band and will never go out of style in my house. I was reading Ayn Rand and Nietzsche while I was listening to "Get Up Off Our Knees", and the combined effect has lasted well into my adulthood.
I originally owned this on cassette, and the CD includes several bonus tracks that make it worth every penny paid - most notably, the gospel/a capella rendition of "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" that never fails to bring a tear to my eye while I'm belting along with it in the car. It's on tracks like "Heavy" that P.D. Heaton and his bandmates redeem themselves for the conniving way they've driving socialism deep into your brain with their pop hooks. At their core, the Housemartins are not about politics, they're about people, and their affection for humanity must be the root of the beautiful harmonies and charming pop melodies that put this album in my top 5 of all time.
Pure Pop.......2001-11-21
This is pop. 3 minute songs. Catchy melodies and memorable refrains. BUT it is not shallow. Good pop-songs take great skill to write. The Housemartins just said more so succinctly. Their music stands in stark contrast to so much other self-absorbed music with a message. And you can party to this music. When they were a pub band in the early eighties then they had no peers. It is one of life's great regrets that I never saw them in a smoky bar in Bristol (or Hull, or London) before Happy Hour made them nationally famous. Cheerful music that makes me think and makes me smile.

Steve Pushes Forward.......2007-01-03
In a determined move to take control of the character of his sound, Steve Earle rides the faders into the red zone, mixing brittle country steel with a revved up guitar licks and forces his way past corporate country experts to begin the definition of a genre. Subtley blending his vocal twang and storytime lyrics with hot guitars and RnR attitude, he opens the bar room door and sucks you in. Just about the time you think that Music Row has a place for him, he sneaks in a harmonica ala Dylan and introduces you to an Angry Young Man, a TexMex San Antonio harlot complete with cheezy Sam the Sham Farfisa Organ, and the declaration of his intention to take life on his OWN terms.. I Aint Ever Satisfied. It proved to be quite prophetic. A clinic in writing and recording for the sake of the song. Townes would be proud.
must buy.......2004-11-24
Growing up listening to this album, and knowing every word on it, despite my lack of understanding, I, like my father, were heartbroken when we wore out this tape. Unable to find a copy in any music store, I thought it was lost forever. Listening to these songs again brings back nostalgia of when the music of steve earle was actually good.
classic Steve.......2002-12-05
I bought this tape at a flea market in Arizona the next day on the way to California I opened the tape and the soundtrack to Labamba was inside imagine the anger.I did get the tape and wore it out No.29 is haunting ,a man reflecting on what once was in his past talking about the pain of an old football injury but it reminds him when is was No.29.The song angry young man is a great is another great piece.Thank God Steve did not die young like Hank or Gram.Get this cd if you can
Great 1987 Follow-Up to Guitar Town.......2002-03-15
During a 1986 tour stop in New York City, Earle sat for an interview with Rolling Stone and promised his next album was "already 3/4 written" and would be "more political." Released in early 1987 with virtually no label support due to his increasing dependence on addictive drugs, Earle pushed "Exit 0" sales into the six-figure realm through relentless touring and word of mouth. Earle had been performing some of the escapist-themed tunes here - "The Week of Living Dangerously," "Sweet Little 66," and the haunting "Number 29" for more than a year, and the masterful farm anthem "The Rain Came Down" was added "strictly out of guilt 'cause no one at Farm Aid knew who I was." There is heightened restlessness ("I Ain't Ever Satisfied") alongside youthful exhuberance ("San Antonio Girl") sometimes placing the listener in a quandry, but only because Earle's tautly-drawn characters are so believable. Producer Richard Bennett's trademark 6-string bass is not as prominent, which was probably a signpost of Earle's desire to venture into rock territory on future projects. Regardless of which camp he intended to visit, Exit 0 makes for a most interesting stop.
Ladies and gentlemen, the astonishing Steve Earle.......2002-03-05
Not only the album title, "Exit 0" but also the opening cut, "Nowhere Road," testify to what many assumed to be Steve Earle's ultimate destination for so long. Now cleaned up and apparently doing well--both creatively and personally--Earle fought so many demons for so long that most folks assumed this prodigiously talented musician and composer would end up dead in a ditch by the side of the road. Perhaps mindful of this possibility, Earle works the road metaphor here and mines continual and astonishing riches out of it. "Nowhere Road" admits, "I push that road from here to someday/I'll push as long as I'm alive, but I don't know how long I'll last . . . I know I'm going way too fast." "Sweet Little '66" is Buddy Holly-inspired ode to a favorite Chevy and the rest of the songs mostly have to do with roads, traveling, hotels--anything to get away from the here and now. The rest of the songs are just as good. Earle shows flashes of sly humor here, too--it's not all serious "poor me, I have to get away" stuff. On "The Week of Living Dangerously," he talks about taking off from his wife and kids--eventually even throwing the baby's car seat in a Dumpster so he can go off and have an unimpeded, uninterrupted good time!

Album Description
EXPERIENCE DEEP MEDITATION
Clinical studies conducted in cooperation with the Dalai Lama at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's W.M. Keck Laboratory recently found that Buddhist monks in states of deep meditation attain a particularly high state of consciousness with a unique high frequency brainwave pattern. This research supported the clinical findings of sound healing pioneer Dr. Jeffrey Thompson, who had measured these states more than 10 years earlier and named them HYPERGAMMA.
The Gamma Meditation System 2.0 uses cutting-edge audio technology to help you access the same extraordinary brainwave state. Subtle pulses of HyperGamma brainwave frequencies woven into a multi-layered musical soundtrack engage your own brainwaves to "lock on" to these HyperGamma waves and move you easily into a state of deep meditation, enhanced focus, awakened insight and inspiration.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent meditation music.......2007-05-24
I'd recommend this to those experieced in meditation who are seeking a greater clairity in focus. Having listened to several of Dr. Jeffrey Thompson's cd's, the '2.0' versions are more effective than those under the original titles. One thing I really enjoy about this music is the ease in which one may attain a meditative state. This music may he helpful to beginners as well as those more experienced in their practice.
Dr. Thompson's music provides a powerful structure incorporating various sound wave patterns derivative of electromagnetic fields. These have an extremely powerful and beneficial effect on certain brainwave patterns. These sounds shift ones awareness toward a more grounded and deeper spiritual state. I'd recommend The Awakened Mind System 2.0 as well.
inspiring, music to open your mind.......2007-02-01
This technology incoporates and uses waves that already exsists in your mind and enhances your ability to get to this state throught music and incorporating this wave into the music. It essentially trains your brain and you to be able to go to this state whenever you would like. Gamma waves are known from the monks and are known with higher thinking, open mindness and more connection to emotion and nature as well as DEEP relaxation. I use this cd on a daily basis and when i use it i feel more relaxed and intune to the world.
I am not a very spiritual person and my take on trying these albums was on the scientific view and fascination with brainwaves and if it would work and boy does it. I use some of Jeffrey Thompsons other cd's in my preschool classroom and i notice a relaxing affect or that the students sleep longer. You will not regret buying this cd or any other by DR. thompson.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
A massive set--67 string quartets on 21 discs in a budget-priced, shelf-friendly, compact box. So the obvious question is: do you need it? The equally obvious answer is a resounding "yes" if you love these endlessly inventive quartets and if you appreciate superbly played performances that capture both the letter and the spirit of Haydn's genius. The Angeles String Quartet isn't as well known as some ensembles that have recorded complete Haydn sets, but they are superior to all, with the arguable exception of the Tatrai Quartet. They demonstrate technical polish and rich, warm sound that's never cloying. And they give these works the forward-moving impetus they need within a classical framework, eschewing both anachronistic Romanticism and the mechanical astringency of period specialists.
The Angeles Quartet is unique in its mastery of early as well as late works, in tune with Haydn's stylistic development and sensitive to the attractions of each of these remarkable pieces. So they infuse the visionary slow movements of the late quartets with the appropriate depth and at the same time revel in the muscularity of the Opus 76 No.2's catchy Menuetto, the humor of the "Joke" Quartet, Opus 33 No.2, and the power of the Allegro con spirito of Opus 76 No.1. Most impressive is their way with the early quartets--no small matter when you consider that the contents of the first six discs precede the Opus 20 set generally considered as signaling the maturity of the form. The Angeles make even the earliest quartets, five-movement divertimentos for four strings, a habit-forming delight. Their playing here is full of exuberance, wittily playful and rough, peasantlike by turns. The sonics are outstanding, too, well-balanced, warm, and lifelike. An indispensable recording. --Dan Davis

A superb Haydn benchmark.......2007-06-28
It takes a lot of time to grasp Haydn's music, because there's much of everything: symphonies, piano sonatas, operas, piano trios, string quartets, choral works, songs, etc. - in sum, more than one thousand individual works. It will probably take more than a year listening to it all, and comprehend it as well (i.e., not as "background music"). Few, if any person, can have a complete grasp of everything he wrote.
But there are nonetheless good reasons trying to grasp Haydn's music, at least partly. This bargain set - 68 string quartets on 21 CDs - is a perfectly good reason. Haydn's string quartets contain some of his finest music. And the present recordings with Angeles Quartet are simply superb. Unlike many period instrument performers, Angeles Quartet avoids meticulous mannerism and plays this music with energy and passion, without loosing structural control. Furthermore, the recordings are excellent, with a rich, creamy and spacious sound. In short, great performances and excellent engineering. A benchmark recording, no less.
There are some rival complete sets: Aeolian Quartet (Decca), Festetics Quartet (period instrument performances, Arcana), Tátrai (Hungaroton), and Kodaly Quartet (Naxos). In terms of sound, the present set is clearly preferable. In terms of performances, the only serious rival is Tátrai Quartet's classic collection from the sixties. But Angeles Quartet is not a second choice. If you hesitate, you need both. Budget and shelf space minded collectors need not hesitate.
Perfect Dinner Music.......2007-05-14
Some might be offended at the idea that music be played in the background to accompany a fine meal, but in fact most of us listen to music in the background. This entire set of 15-CDs is (to my ears) the perfect music to accompany a delicious meal with someone you love. I have owned this CD set for years and never tire of it.
I have found that after listening to it hundreds of times that using iTunes in shuffle mode keeps it fresh.
Delightful Background Music.......2006-03-04
This music is a great buy, and wonderful to listen to while doing desk work or reading.
The Angeles String Quartet does an excellent job, and all of the works are so tuneful that I frequently found myself walking around the house humming the tunes after hearing a quartet for the first time.
He truly is the father of string quartets!.......2005-09-27
This may not be true as far as the instrumentation is concerned, but Haydn is one of the first to explore them as more than a solo violin with a trio accompaniment (second violin, viola and cello), thus giving the chamber music a new dimension.
If you've already explored Haydn's universe through some of his glorious symphonies, these string quartets are an excellent way of further expanding your appreciation of Haydn's music. There are very few dull moments in this lot (and almost all of them are to be found in his early quartets, while there are a few in his very latest works, where he seems to have lost the energy and brio that had established him as one of the best composers of his time). His first works have five movements and ressemble the divertimenti or serenatas. Later on, his quartets took a form which was to become standard, both for Haydn and other composers: four movements - a fast one, a slow one, a minuet and trio and a fast finale.
If one listens to Haydn's string quartes in chronological order, one can feel and appreciate his growth and maturity as a composer. The motives introduced during the first movement are developed over the entire work entity, the increasing use of first movements that are monothematic, the expansion of harmonic usage, the combination of serious with funny, intellectual with ridicule, etc.
Both Mozart and Beethoven wrote famous series of string quartets, but I've always liked Haydn's quartets the most. My personal favorites are op. 76 (especially no 3, which later on became the German National Anthem), op. 64 (especially no 5 called "The lark") and op. 33 (where Haydn introduced special effects, like a birdcall, which gave the third quartet its name).
A matter of taste?.......2005-05-31
It is something unpleasant about the sound here; it is resonant, yes, but not like the Takacs quartet. Comparing to the Takacs' take on op.76/1, 2 & 3, which I love, the Angeles' makes me think of a grey substance, sterile, antiseptic, of no life. Is it the sound quality? Or is it the way the quartet is playing? I think the latter, but it is difficult to figure out what is wrong; in fact I don't find any serious miscalculations. The problem is that the playing feels calculated; it is some kind of contrived perfection, it all feels too concious; I feel something wrong about the accent, the stress of the phrasings... but I give up: Suffice it to say that I regret I bought this collection of boring performances. Three stars for professional playing. If you like some human touch, go for the Aeolian quartet, less perfection, more life.
