You Are the Quarry

Morrissey's first new album since the nineties is a triumph. Powered by a formidable quartet, the twin guitars spit fire that matches every wounded issue Morrissey tears into. Never one to mince words, he comes out swinging, taking America to task and then turning his attention on his homeland with the blistering "Irish Blood, English Heart." You Are the Quarry is so effective because it's less an overt rallying cry than a heartfelt plea for the world to make sense to him again. Elsewhere, relationships are given such a uniquely vibrant vantage point as to render any other angle blind. His wordplay mixes the coy invention of Cole Porter with a feisty contemporary showman's sense of stagecraft, wit, and drama. "Close your eyes, and think of someone you physically admire, and let me kiss you." It doesn't get much better to that. And wedded to charging hooks, these songs will move into your head and never leave. --David Greenberger --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars could it be i like you?.......2006-06-01

for some unspeakable reason, i didn't buy this album when it was released. actually i didn't buy it until after buying and devouring "the ringleader of the tormentors." i enjoyed that one so much that i backed up to this one. i played it until i thought i should give it a rest. the rest period lasted about two weeks. i had to get it back out. i'll just buy another one if it begins to wear out.
to be honest, i don't really understand my obsession with it. i utterly despise greatest hits collections...and, though this isn't one, it could be. there is not one weak song; not one weak moment. his voice is in excellent form. his wit is still peerless. the writing is flawless. i find myself dancing through the house when it's on; i find myself singing along in the car.
it's not the smiths, but it doesn't try to be. these are the insights of our morrissey with some years under his belt. those years haven't tarnished his ability to speak his truths, which apparently encompass some truths of my own.
thanks to this work, i have been driven to re-experience all of morrissey's work...from "viva hate" all the way to the present. he has created an awesome body of work.
anyone who enjoys this album should pick up "who put the m in manchester." having never had the privilege of seeing morrissey live, it's fun to watch him bring many of the songs on this album to life on the stage. our morrissey is a real character.

4 out of 5 stars Simply a very good album.......2006-04-16

I've never been a Smiths fan, or a Morrissey fan for what matters.
I knew who the Moz was, of course -it would have been hard not to, being a teenager in the 80's and all- but for decades I was only dimly aware of Bigmouth or Sunday playing on the radio, as sort of a household soundtrack for my teenage memories.

About a year ago, however, I heard "Let me kiss you" on the train and it brought back all those feelings of helpless childish infatuation, when you felt you were the ugliest duckling around and the object of your affection was oh so unreachable. It really moved me, and I thought maybe there's more to Morrissey than meets the eye. I mean the ear. Whatever.

And some weeks later, Hector came riding those guitars with a gun in his hand, stealing from the rich and the poor and the not very rich (me!) and the very poor, and the Moz stole my heart away.

What I'm saying is, this is a great album, period. I don't know about earlier or later works, nor do I care: taken as a unit, this album is highly enjoyable.

Yes he's whiny at times, no I couldn't care less if he's forgiven Jesus or not, but hey, we already know what the Moz is like sometimes. He's that slightly embarrasing uncle who brings those great presents and has those great stories to tell when he comes to visit.

Put the embarrasing aside, and there's a fistful of great stories/songs, to enjoy here.

3 out of 5 stars YOU ARE THE QUARRY : feels like a comeback.......2006-04-12

yes yes yes..it had been quite a long time since Morrissey had released a new album before Quarry...but he had never gone away. there were still numerous tours and plenty of new songs being aired in his live shows...but there simply was no record deal. so this album is a "comeback" of sorts if it's viewed in terms of popularity...seeeing as how this album ranked really high when it was first released and all of us Moz fans were dizzy with excitement for months and months. some were shouting "best Morrissey album ever!" and while that's a bit of a exageration; there is plenty to be excited about here. and there are a few surprises that left many fans cold. the production, for instance, is staunch and punchy and sounds polished to a glistening bright sound. it sounds good...but maybe not the best sound for Morrissey. there are some moments of brilliance on this album, as with the standout single "First Of The Gang To Die" and the beautiful "Come Back To Camden." those two tracks are my favorite songs on Quarry and (in my opinion) they best represent the Morrissey that most of his fans know and love. having said that, the remainder of the songs here are good...really good. a few painful lyrics pop up here and there (i cringe with uncomfort every time i hear that "hamburger" line in "America Is Not The World"). one more thing i do not appreciate about this album are the goofy electronic stuff that blips and bleeps in some of the songs. most notably in the song "All The Lazy Dykes." this song carries a wonderful melody and has a pleasant dreaminess to it (actually, i was surprised at how much that song was maligned by fans; considering how much of a Vauxhall And I feeling i associate with it...despite the interruptive synthesizer stuff). so...overall, i'd give You Are The Quarry a 3.5. it's a good album and was so overjoyed when it first came out...but now, looking back, it's not quite as good without the "comeback" hype surrounding it...but still a solid album.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-04-03

I can see why this album got good reviews, because it has a sort of modern sheen and renewed swagger to it, and branches out somewhat from obvious Morrissey work, but unfortunately I don't think it has the songs to match. Lyrically, it's pretty dire - 'America Is Not The World' is an utterly tired anti-US rant, 'The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores' the same against manufactured pop stars, and the withering wit of old has become predictable and not at all edgy. On other tracks, he's wallowing in self-pity, with 'I Have Forgiven Jesus' and 'How Could Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel' particularly unbearable, in both cases letting down some decent music, and the latter sounding like self-parody, culminating in Morrissey melodramatically caterwauling 'JESUS! YOU HATE ME! DO YOU HATE ME, DO YOU HATE ME?'.

Elsewhere ,it's a little better. 'Irish Blood, English Heart' is a blistering, dramatic firework show powered along by urgent, frenetic guitars, and 'First Of The Gang To Die' is easily the closest thing here to the Smiths of old, a classic tune with some witty lines. Nothing comes close to those two tracks, but the aforementioned 'This World Is Fully Of Crashing Bores' is musically, at least, pleasantly expansive and sweeping, and 'Let Me Kiss You' is a witty take on lovelorn balladry ('close your eyes/and think of someone you physically admire/and let me kiss you'). Not all the music is as successful: the bubbling, skipping 'I Like You' just sounds quite silly, especially in the chorus, and 'Come Back To Camden' and 'I'm Not Sorry' are meandering ballads with MOR production that never really go anywhere. When Morrissey sounds silly, it's sad, because The Smiths could be utterly absurd without ever sounding silly.

1 out of 5 stars This album is terrible........2006-03-21

"You Are the Quarry is so effective because it's less an overt rallying cry than a heartfelt plea for the world to make sense to him again." (from the Amazon.com review above)

Sure. As soon as young people start to respect this aging has-been the world will start to make more sense to him. Any day now...

This album is terrible. Morrissey is terrible, too. I loved everything between Bona Drag and Southpaw Grammar, and I've seen the guy many times, but this album sucks. Maladjusted sucked. Morrissey has lost his touch. ONLY high-schoolers trying to fake some kind of cachet and PAID REVEIWER STOOGES will find anything of merit on this album. "English Heart..." sounds like some old, drunk Irishman wandered into the world's most expensive studio while a bunch of fifteen-year-olds from Orange County, CA were trying to start a mall-emo band. Thumbs down!

5 out of 5 stars I will die with both of my hands , untied........2007-07-06

there has been quite a bit written and even more said about Morrissey. This record puts to rest any bed wetting that his fans were going through after the surprisingly great " Malajusted" The best songs certainly stand out (Irish Blood, English Heart being one of the best songs since the "your Arsenal" period) amongst the weaker ones. All in all though this record was and is a complete return to form for the Pope of Mope.

4 out of 5 stars "But my heart...is open...my heart...is open to you".......2006-05-13

Despite a perplexing, perhaps insincere need to continually put his sweet self down--and indeed anyone else who should happen to admire him!--Morrissey's successful comeback CD "You Are The Quarry" is filled with quirky pop hooks, haunting balladry, wickedly quotable lyrics and lush orchestration. "Let Me Kiss You" is a great example of Morrissey's melding of lovely romantic music with cutting words that nearly dispels the romance (and intentionally so). Morrissey isn't ambivalent or indifferent, but he's helplessly suspicious and mired in doubt. He wants us to examine our feelings of need (via his) but warns us of the treachery of desire. I'm not sure how much of this music is truly autobiographical, but it makes for a compelling listen. Best cuts: "Let Me Kiss You", the eerily beautiful "I'm Not Sorry", and the rocking "First of the Gang To Die"; weakest is the opener, "America Is Not The World", for whenever Morrissey gets his political ire up, the leaden sarcasm weighs down the music like a wet pound cake.

5 out of 5 stars the redemption of Saint Morrissey.......2004-11-29

It might just be that the patron saint of adolescent sexual frustration and malaise got tired of the shtick that made him so popular. From his pompadoured, "asexual" persona at the head of the Smiths to a decade of self-indulgent solo albums, Morrissey became very predictable: his album covers would feature a near-exact design, his song titles would be ridiculously wordy and the actual music would be relatively unremarkable.

That's changed. Morrissey hasn't sound this inspired since Viva Hate. In fact, songs like "Irish Heart, English Blood" actually rock - I would venture to say that Alain Whyte has finally proven to be a better co-writer than Stephen Street ever was (despite his helping to write "Suedehead"), and Morrissey finally manages to come across as being more honest than coy. "How Can Anyone Possibly Know How I Feel?" is indicative of this album as a whole: it retains Morrissey's biting, verbose lyrics (and title) and manages to be catchy at the same time. In fact, its guitar work sounds very similar to that of a brand-new band from Morrissey's dear Britain: Franz Ferdinand. The ability to confuse Morrissey's music with that of a band bursting with youthful vitality is a very, very pleasing thing.

This is the best work Morrissey has done in years, and it is most likely his best solo work yet. It's nice to see him finally step outside of his tired old formula; if this is his swan song, he's going out on a really high note.

5 out of 5 stars Morrissey's Best Work in Years.......2004-09-14

oh boy. this one's the best thing morrissey has done in, i dunno, *ages*.

i don't normally collect morrissey. but this new album has a real backbone to it: he's pissed, he's motivated, he's got talent and finally is using it to potential.

rah rah! there are actual power riffs on "you know i couldn't last". in the addictively riffy "irish blood, english heart", he sings pissed betrayal: "I've been dreaming of a time when / the English are sick to death of Labour / & Tories, & spit upon the name of Oliver Cromwell & denounce this royal line that still salute him & will salute him forever." a gentle, sweet spray of acid is the best description of "i have forgiven jesus" i can think of: it's got a romantic sound and a knife-blade undertone. and i'm particularly fond of "all the lazy dykes".

check it out yerself. it's one of the finest albums on the market right now and a fantastic change from the insipid "boy/girl meets girl/boy and they hump/argue/pine". and the music! orgasmic.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy it. It will only encourage him........2004-06-08

I have been buying and enjoying Morrissey/Smiths albums since the mid-eighties. However, I'm afraid I will have to stop, and not just because, as this lackluster CD indicates, he seems to have lost his talent for songwriting. At a recent concert in Ireland, Morrissey said, "Bush should have died, not Reagan." I will not be sending any more greenbacks to a psychopath who longs for the death of our president.

3 out of 5 stars A starter for the new Morrissey fan.......2006-11-10

Yes, I have heard of Morrissey's both famous and infamous self-loathing lycrical expression in the past many years through various medias covering today's Alternative era. When this original "pink" version of YOU ARE THE QUARRY made its first appearance in the local record stores, the carrier instantly edited it as a private release under its own distribution - as if Morrissey is not infamous enough to make his way through the local music business.

In spite of the much appraised reviews and a few moderately publicised critics, I was determined to grab this Special Enhanced Quarry online. And I am happy I did it. The Quarry is not just as adaptable for a new Morrissey experience but is as sentimental to be empathised with one's own life and facts (any Morrissey record could be). Try AMERICA IS NOT THE WORLD, I HAVE FORGIVEN JESUS (no wonder Craig Kilborn requested it for his The Late Late Show), I LIKE YOU, and MY LIFE IS A SUCCESSION OF PEOPLE SAYING GOODBYE (possibly B-side's most outstanding track, both lyrically and musically).

What else is good if not worth two cents for a new fan, catch a few glimpses of Morrissey agonising and kicking through the video of IRISH BLOOD ENGLISH HEART in a lovely, orche tinted wallpapered living hall.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Second Impression.......2006-08-05

I have been into BritPop for over a decade and am a fanatic for Oasis and Pulp (and, once in a great while, Blur). After watching the movie "Live Forever" and reading some reviews, I heard many clamor that Morrissey should have been added to the DVD. While I can see while he was not, since his heyday with the Smiths and his early solo career was just before the height of the second British Invasion, I was still interested.
After a while, I picked up the "Best of Morrissey" (I know there are about three dozen, but you get the idea) and was pleasantly surprised. At first, the songs seemed a little to quirky. The titles were extremely long and some of the tracks, like "Hairdresser on Fire" and "Sing Your Live" made me wonder (no offense) if this guy was being serious or not.
However, after a few listens I fell in love with "...International Playboys", "Now My Heart Is Full" and "Hold On to Your Friends." They were moving and clearly deep, meaningful outlets for Morrissey. Wanting to branch out, I grabbed "Quarry" as everyone was talking about it so much in the press.
At first, again, didn't really like it. Some of the songs were grating and seemed to lack the lyrical wit I heard on the "Best of..." So, I shelved it for a week or so.
However, I forced myself back to it, and while I still couldn't stand some tracks, i.e. "...Crashing Bores" and "...How I Feel" (which seem a bit childish and whiney, respectively) I found some moments of brilliance. "Come Back to Camden" is sweeping and gorgeously layered, "Let Me Kiss You" has a wicked guitar riff around the choruses and "You Know..." ends the album in a wonderful hook-filled style.
...Or it would have had I not bought the deluxe version. Thank goodness, since I find the B-sides (much like with Oasis and, in some cases, Pulp), to hold the true brilliance of the album. "Teenage Dad..." is a great song, with wonderfully honest lyrics. "I Am Two People" has a very genuinely sweet sound to it; I always end my listenings on this track. However, in my opinion, the gem of the entire album is "Friday Mourning." One of the most moving and powerful songs I have heard in a long time, it booms with passion, lyrics of struggle and a magnificent use of echo to give the track an even greater intensity.
While at first I wondered whether Morrissey was the guy I thought I knew off the "Best of..." CD, I have come to find he isn't; rather, he is so much more. I plan to buy "V&I" soon. Hopefully, the journey through that CD will be as rewarding as this one.

4 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR YOUR COLLECTION.......2006-06-08

Morrisey has done it-- made a come back after all these years. This album is simply stated , beautiful , and reflects a more mature side of Morrisey while allowing him to hold on to his past as well.

Truly a masterpeice.

5 out of 5 stars Same Ol' Morrissey!.......2005-11-20

From a long-time Morrissey/Smiths fan, here's the deal: If you were into his stuff back in the day, then I think you'll be fully pleased and satisfied by this new offering. Some have complained that he's gotten political (the first song trashes America, and the second one trashes his native Britain, both deservedly so, in my humble opinion), but how can one NOT be political in these crazy times? Humorous self-loathing is one thing, but apathy is surely quite another, and the two should never be confused! However, for all you old-schoolers out there, fear not, there's plenty of the self-flagellation and grand, sweeping, pop melodies that we all expect and crave. For those of you unfamiliar with this guy and his contributions to the field, then, boy, have you missed out on a big part of your modern music education! I advise you to check this out and discover one of the great, meloncholy, pop crooners of all time. Also, be warned that there are at least 3 (that I know of) versions of this album floating around, but this is definitely the one to get. It has 9 (!) additional tracks beyond the original release, most of which are up to the level of the original tracks, as well as 5 videos (3 of which are from the old Craig Kilborn Late Late Show). I originally bought another "deluxe" version, but it didn't have the bonus tracks and only came with the "Irish Blood, English Heart" video. This version is definitely worth the extra money! Hooray for Morrissey's misery - long may it last!

For a while back there, it seemed like Morrissey had nothing left to say. With the Smiths he marvelously guided all the messed up youth of the world through the everyday savages of adolescence, seemingly turning out classics like "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side" and "How Soon Is Now?" between sips of tea. By the time the '90s arrived, Morrissey seemed stuck in an unbearably boring rockabilly rut, turning out records like Southpaw Grammar and Maladjusted. The light had gone out. Seven years in the making, however, his seventh solo album, You Are the Quarry, feels like a rush of blood to the head. It's not a full-blown return to form but it sure feels right. Fired up politically and socially, Morrissey is no longer taking on the problems in the bedroom but the world at large, lashing out gracefully with standout tracks like "Irish Blood, English Heart" and "America Is Not the World." The sound is big, brash, and faintly familiar. Most importantly, the charm is back, even when he sings something as ludicrous and stupid as "All the Lazy Dykes." At least we know his heart's still beating. --Aidin Vaziri

Having been truant - despite the Herculean efforts of my best friend - from the Smiths fan club until about three years ago (2003), I was not personally affected by Morrissey's 7-year extended hiatus following the somewhat lackluster Maladjusted. This effort (if it may be called that) and its predecessor, Southpaw Grammar, left many longtime followers believing that the Mozzer's career had ended with a whimper. Granted, droves of fans would still fill venues when he would do the occasional tour or one-off show, but the chances of him returning to his former glory seemed as slim as a reunion of his former band.

Then came May 2004, and Morrissey was back, sounding typically glorious. The warmth of his voice still filled a room as fully and evenly as it ever did. You Are the Quarry was not just his only album in seven years, but his best one in a decade. Although it may not overtake the standard set by Viva Hate, Your Arsenal or Vauxhall and I, it certainly not too far behind them. Several of the songs are first-rate, such as "Come Back To Camden", "I'm Not Sorry", "Let Me Kiss You", and "I Like You", and almost all of the others are at least pretty good, including the hard-rocking "Irish Blood, English Heart". But it is "First of the Gang to Die" that instantly ranks right up with "Everyday is Like Sunday" among certified Morrissey classics. While some of the tracks may pass by a bit quietly on the first few listens, this one will have you reaching for the repeat button years after you have first heard it, and maybe even digging the CD out again to begin with. This was one of the best songs of 2004.

Granted, a character like Morrissey will always teeter on the brink of self-parody, and "How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel?" brings him dangerously close to the precipice. But Moz fans young and new will forgive him for this, and chalk it up to the fact that this just isn't one of the disc's better songs. Other tracks find him in a not too atypical mode of hyperbole and megalomania. On "I Have Forgiven Jesus", Morrissey switches places with the son of the Christian God, acting as both His accuser and absolver. On "The World is Full of Crashing Bores", Morrissey finds solace in the fact that he is one of them himself only by the standards of the hordes of crashing bores who deem him to be such. Finally, "You Know I Couldn't Last" provides an ironic but poignant bit of closure.

You Are the Quarry is not a breakthrough for Morrissey, but it doesn't need to be. A very good Morrissey album specifically is a very good album generally. He has nothing to prove, and has long since staked out the musical territory that he has decided to mine. He doesn't need to break any new ground, any more that Bob Dylan needs to record a hip-hop record. Whatever debate there may be over whether You Are the Quarry is a comeback or merely a return is a futile one. Of course it is a comeback. What else do you call one of an artist's best CDs being released after a decade of creative fallowness? The follow-up to YATQ, 2006's Ringleader of the Tormentors, shows that this was no fluke, and that he still has momentum to spare.

So now we know that Morrissey was capable of restoring his former glory. Now what about the reunion of that former band of his? Well, to quote the Mozzer himself, "The Smiths will end in murder".

5 out of 5 stars IT'S HARD TO BE GOOD.......2005-03-09

I'm a Smiths fan since my teen years (now I'm 37)and after they split-up I continued to follow Morrissey's work with interest. I still listen to The Smiths music: although I'm not a rabid fan, I simply didn't "grow out of it" as some might expect because it was relevant for my formative years and STILL IS, and I think Morrissey is still holding the torch, and always fought bravely not to let it die away. I simply marvel at the harshness of some critics in denouncing the "sillyness" of some songs here, or the fact that his new record isn't "ground breaking" there. Please, understand my point: I'm not saying that Morrissey is beyond critics (in fact, I believe an important part of his personal history was marked by failure, misunderstanding and criticism), but, in a time when we see the complete mediocrity of what's in the music charts... give me a break!! The more I see these nobodies hailed as relevant, ground-breaking, revelation, etc. I can only look back to groups like the Smiths and thank God for Morrissey being still active and creative. He makes mistakes? Surely yes, who doesn't? But then again, how many is faring really better? Being REALLY relevant to anyone? Britney Spears? Eminen? Snoopy whatsoever? one of those stupid boys bands? Think about it!

2 out of 5 stars A Step Down.......2005-02-19

Bottom line: love the Smiths, love Morrissey, but this one is a bit of a stinker. Very boring and I actually had to turn it off because it was getting on my nerves. Mozzer, you can do better.

5 out of 5 stars Great things come to those who wait..........2005-02-10

Ok, I am a Morrissey fan but this album makes me forget the seven years I spent desperately salivating at the mouth for new Moz. Morrissey uses the first three tracks to just get his gripes out about America, the UK, and Christianity. Despite the potential for some to find the lyrics offensive in "America Is Not the World" or "I have Forgiven Jesus" there still is a lot of good in such songs. Morrissey's voice is as good as ever and it radiates truth and emotion that sometimes has me concurrently nodding my head... or perhaps provoke a tear. There isn't a single dissapointing song on this album with the exception, if any, of "All the Lazy Dykes" which could have been replaced by a number of fabulous b-sides found on the album's singles. This album is so good that I am tempted to stab my ears out with a screwdriver after I listen to it so that I never hear anything else... ever. Strongly recommend!!!
