The copy protection system used in Europe and other territories on select EMI/Capitol releases including To the 5 Boroughs is Macrovision's CDS-200, which sets up an audio player into the users RAM (not hard drive) to playback the Yellow book audio on the disk. None of the copy protection in CDS-200 requires software applications to be loaded onto a computer. Contrary to rumor, it does absolutely NOT install any kind of spyware onto the users system. I can't see how anyone can like this, unless flat and boring is your thing.

It's kinda funny: when Licensed To Ill was released it was the BBoys joking around and it turned into a gem. I assume they are taking themselves serious on this one, and it turned out a clunker.

How can a band have such a great string of awesome music and then release this piece of junk followed by their latest release: Mix-Up (more junk).

If the BBoys were playing baseball, they would've switched to DH long ago. Instead these guys are still starting, and at best hitting the Mendoza line.

Retire while you still have some pride, unless you think selling corny music for lots of money is cool. I don't. Some poor sap bought my trade in.

Excellent. The B-Boys are taking a different approach to the past. The B-Boys made this album hit harder and more aggressive than previous B-Boys work. The B-Boys usually stay on the clean side, but I'm not complaining! The bass hits hard on many tracks and the sound is clean. I like it better than Intergalactic myself. Not as much instrumental as previous albums.

I agree with a few earlier posts. I am a big Beastie Boy from way back and I was really excited when this album came out and this album definitely has a few great moments like "CH-Check It Out", "All Lifestyles", "Rhyme The Rhyme Well", "An Open Letter to NYC" but some of the other preachy departures and references to "Columbine bowling" quickly diminish and date this work. Throw in a few songs like "Crawlspace", "Hey F*** You", "Time to Build", and "Shazam!" that in the old days would have been to end up as b-sides and you end up with a diappointing addition to your B-boy catalog. Most songs on this album just seem to fall short of what the B-boys use to produce. Perhaps its their growing older or they are just too distracted nowadays with other endeavours. My advice to B-boys if they were to put out another album is to focus more on the music and lyrics and leave out the preachy politics.

I got into the beastie boys about a year before this album dropped and by the time it did, i was a huge fan with all their albums. i was extremely dissapointed with To The 5 Boroughs. don't get me wrong, there are some great tracks, like Ch-Check It Out, Triple Trouble, An Open Letter To NYC, Right Right Now Now.. the rest of the album sounds more like filler to me. the big difference between this album and their past albums is the lack of energy in the music itself. the lyrics are still your classic bboys, but the beats sound flat and lame compared to Hello Nasty. I could only imagine what this album would sound like if they had gone back to using their instruments. Rating all their albums, starting with the worst: TT5B, Liscened to Ill, Ill Communication, and a three-way tie between Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head and Hello Nasty.

To The Five Burroughs caught alot of heat when it first came out, but in time it'll get its proper due IMO. I was old enough to remember the negative reaction Paul's Boutique initially got, and I guess some of us had the last laugh on that one...soon enough people will say the same thing about TT5B. It just oozes a classic early 80's hip-hop vibe (both musically & lyrically), and like Paul's Boutique, it's an all-out rap album with enough smart-alecky rhymes about sucka MCs to keep you in stitches. I never understood the hatred, 'cuz to me it sounds like just another solid Beastie Boys record. If you're dismissing it entirely due to the anti-Dubya sentiments, sheesh....that's like, two out of fifteen tracks? Lighten up, Francis. Maybe in 2014 everyone else will come around....

Don't get me wrong - I'm a huge fan of the Beasties, and the Beasties bickering about politics doesn't bother me, what's wrong with this album comes in the form of too little, as opposed to too much.

The first Beastie Boys album in 6 years "To the 5 Boroughs", is a very plain Beastie experience compared to the likes of "Paul's Boutique", "Ill Communication", and even "Licensed to Ill". The production on here, all of it done by the Beasties themselves, is sorely lacking. Gone are the guitars, and in once again are tons, and tons of samples. The sampling thing was cool back in '89 with Paul's Boutique, but this is 2004, and I was expecting a new sound from the Beasties, instead of the stripped-down minimalistic beats on here. The only track on here with any sort of production quality at all is "An Open Letter to NYC".

The rhymes however, are on point, as usual. Adrock, Mike D and MCA deliver some great lines and verses, though most of the songs on here follow the exact same rhyme structure. The lead single, "Ch-Check it Out" is probably the best track on here, but that's probably because it doesn't sound much different than the others. "Crawlspace" has some nice funk-elements in it, "Oh Word?" and "Hey F*** You" show the Beasties can still tear it up when they're pushing 40. A few of the tracks on here are really weak though, such as "We Got The" and "Time To Build", I don't think it has anything to do with those two being two of the most political tracks, they just don't cut it for me.

Die-hard Beastie fans might be a little disappointed, and probably will be left waiting until the Beasties pick up their guitars again. This is a decent album, but it's not one that will maintain heavy rotation in your CD player.

I love this album. Yeah is a bit edgy and its not a hip-pop laced album, if you want to listen to that type of music listen to P Diddy. You need to respect the Beasties for progressing their sound, and whoever said the rhymes aren't tight needs their ears Ch-checked Out. If you listen to the album several times the tracks slowly build on ya until you can't live without them and aren't they the type of tracks you keep listening to for years?

Sure, I didn't end up loving every track but you definitely get your money's worth with this album. My favourites include:

Ch-Check It Out, Right Right Now Now, Triple Trouble, That's It That's All, All Lifestyles, Shazam! and The Brouhaha.

My final point is to drive home that you should give this album a couple of plays to let the genius sink in.

This isnt a bad cd it just isnt too great either. If you like rap in general you may enjoy it, but im afraid im not in that category and preferred the mixing on hello nasty. There are a spattering of good songs here. Ch ch check it out is great as are tracks 5,6,7 and maybe some of the later ones. In all honesty none of the later songs are memorable enough to recall. It seems like theyve lost their effortless flow which is represented on songs like finger lickin, body movin, and super disco breakin.

"To the 5 Boroughs" is a great CD, don't get me wrong, but there's nothing new or freshly impressing. The whole time, the Beastie Boys' perfect rhymes flow over MixMaster Mike's skilled turntable old skool beats. "Check it Out" stands out on the album, so does "An Open Letter to NYC," but the rest seems to blend together. That's not a bad thing, though. The Beastie Boys have a way of pulling off stuff like that smoothly. Secondly, the album seems more like teh soundtrack to that new movie "Farenheit 9/11" at times. The boys bash George W. Bush and his decisions in probably 3-5 songs, slurring out that it's time for a re-election. I bought the clean version of this CD and after a few listens... there basically was no serious foul language. They say "F**K" like 3 times, they say "ass" once, "S**T" only pops up twice and there's a couple of "damn"s and "Hell"s. Otherwise, this CD isn't very "explicitive."

Listening to "Ch-Check it Out" all over MTV2 and college radio, you can't help but rock the hell out, but after the first track, you'll quickly learn it isn't the party "Ch-Check it Out" seemingly promised. With much more subversive beats than the single, "To The 5 Boroughs" is definitely more lyrically driven. After a couple of listens though, you'll start to glean your favorite tracks and enjoy the hell out of them, and (assuming you're a liberal) will appreciate the entire album's lyrics as relevent political gospel, one that succeeds without naming too many names or getting down on itself.

            5 out of 5 stars Pauls Boutique, 15 years later.......2007-01-19

            As anyone knows, the Beastie Boys made their greatest album in 1989, Pauls Boutique, as funky party album filled with nonstop samples and no filler. Well New York State of Mind is like Paul's Botique 15 years later. DJ Green Lantern is an exxcelent DJ, and he makes all the tracks feel as fresh and catchy, if not catchier, as when they were first released. Some moments on this album are absolute, indescribable strokes of genius, such as putting Biggie Smalls on the hook for "Hey Ladies," Ludacris rapping "When I move you move" during the chorus of "Body Movin'." But the true highlight of the album is "Looking Down The Barrell of a Gun," which uses the instrumental from Jay-Z's "U Dont Know," and a Biggie Smalls rap to create one of the most indescribable jolts of pure adrenaline in recent years. There are also some new tracks loosely based on some of the Beasties' older songs, such as Busta Rhymes doing an excellent modern version of "Paul Revere," and better yet, MOP doing a updated "No Sleep Till Brooklyn." The only track that doesn't quite seem to fit is a Clipse freestlye over the instrumental for "Pass the Mic." However, that track is also excellent and from the beggining to end, New York State of Mind is undeniably an absolute hip-hop masterpeice, perhaps even matching Pauls Botique.
