5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2004-05-14

I am only writing this review because some of the other reviews of this work are so off the mark. After I discovered Shannon Worrell's music, I managed to get my hands on her entire discography (including the Lilith Fair song and her September 67 work). And while all of her CDs are wonderful, The Moviegoer is clearly her best realized work. The poignancy of Movie Star Mom Reprise, the jazzy orchestration of The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, her upbeat vocals on Your Own Wilderness, these are what make this one of the best CDs of the new millennium. Your Own Wilderness is one of the best songs I've ever heard. I don't really understand how this record could be out of print. It is fantastic. Anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Like Reading A Book.......2001-11-30

This CD is so amazing; it's like reading a book. The story unfolds itself from chapter to chapter, song to song. The tunes are very catchy with the horns and wurlitzer in the background, but Shannon shines with her strong guitar style and heartfelt voice. Her lyrics make you think and are not just handouts like most of today's pop. They are sung with utter feeling, as well. Different from the first album, but still worth checking out. You won't regret it; it's one of my top 5 CDs.

3 out of 5 stars Too mature.......2001-02-22

Shannon's original album was introduced to me six years ago by my son who went to UVA and was/is really into DMB and along with them Shannon. I am really into female singer/songwriters and Three Wishes quickly became one of my all time favorites. Here we have the same voice, but diminished and mature, and much of the soul is lost in the sound. In the original album, Shannon changed pitch, tempo and emotion in unique ways which are seldom heard at all in this album. I looked for severaly years for another album, as the inbetweenyears are hard to find even in Charlottesville, and now have found that Shannon is another that has a depth and angst in early work that disappears with age.

2 out of 5 stars She's done MUCH better.......2001-01-23

Shannon has an amazing voice, but this album absolutely pales in comparison to her first (and much harder to find) album "Three Wishes." Now "Three Wishes" is an album that I would give 5 stars. It's fairly mellow, but has much, much more substance to it than Moviegoer. If you're new to Shannon, definitely check out "Three Wishes" before even touching this one. Also checkout her effort with longtime friend Kristin Asbury under the band name September 67 (the only made one album before they disbanded). That is another 5 star album and much more upbeat and electric than "Three Wishes."

4 out of 5 stars Mood Setting.......2000-11-27

This album sets a mood for the listener. It is suttle and beautiful. If you are a fan of Shawn Colvin then there is no reason not to pick up a copy of Ms. Worrell's album because she hauntingly sounds like a carbon copy of Shawn Colvin. If you are in the mood for a easy listening sound then this is the album to pick up and settle down with.
