The people who felt betrayed when Linda Eder covered several pop songs on 2002's Gold will be relieved that her follow-up, Broadway My Way, is a return to the Great White Way. As if to prove that she isn't limited to either the songs of Frank Wildhorn or ballads, Eder tackles some well-known show tunes. The ballads tend to be overwrought, so it's best to look for the uptempo numbers. The singer's take on "Some People" is technically fine but so va-va-voom showbiz that it lacks the deranged edge that makes the song so compellingly dramatic. Things work a lot better on "I Am What I Am": while Eder doesn't take it to the top (or rather over the top), this is as close as she gets to Mermanizing a number. Elsewhere, "Don't Rain on My Parade" (immortalized by Streisand) and "Man of La Mancha" are appropriately brassy and triumphant, with Eder roaring her way through both songs. Fans of both Eder and Wildhorn should note that the singer reprises her Svengali's "Gold," the title track from her previous album, and an excerpt from his long-in-the-works Camille Claudel. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Linda Eder - Great Voice.......2007-07-06

This lady has one great voice. She can certainly sell a song. My only reservation about her is that she's a bit cocky. I think she could use some humility.

5 out of 5 stars Not a voice.......an instrument.......2007-02-17

Unbelievable breath control, phrasing, and style. My 10 yr. old Granddaughter who heretofore has listened and loved the usual rap
and hip-hop, heard me playing this disc and begged me to buy her
one........and I did, and she plays it all the time, and to her
friends. Linda Eder exceeds the Streisand mystique by far.

5 out of 5 stars the best female singer of the great american standards........2006-07-24

i am turning 60 years old this year. i went to my 1st.broadway
musical in 1960. over the years i have had the honor to see
almost all of the giants of american song, garland, streisand,
patti lupone, lena horne, betty buckley, barbaracook etc. in
"broadway, my way" linda eder cements her place as the best of the best. from an anthem like "i am what i am" to the lovely
"on the street where you live" captures you body and soul.
i loved this album, and don't ever miss a chance to see her live. JOHN POWER

5 out of 5 stars The powerful and beautiful voice of Linda Elder.......2006-02-23

A great selection of songs. Tremendous amount of energy in Linda's voice. I just love it.

5 out of 5 stars Linda Eder shines with her Broadway album.......2006-02-18

Wow! Linda Eder has an outstanding voice. She sells Broadway in the styles of Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand. After hearing this you will want more.

4 out of 5 stars Music we all need to hear once in a while........2007-01-04

This album is well put together and I enjoy the old standards. Music is an integral part of our heritage. Often when I listen to this album, I think about what our country has been through and how very, very important it is to appreciate what we have. I spent 3 years living in France in the 60's and I cannot tell you how much all Americans looked forward to going "Home!"

Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars A very good CD.......2005-06-16

If you like a mix of songs and marches very well played, this CD is for you. The voices of the singers are good, the music support the lyrics and it is easy to listen or to sing along. Also, nearby half of the tunes are played by the Band of the Grenadier Guards and for me, this Band is the best band to play Sousa marches and military marches. The precision of the execution is perfect, the sound is lovely and the technical quality of the recording is perfect. When I listen Anchors Aweigh, I always hear the sound of the waves and it is one of the only bands that gives me this feeling. If you have just one CD of military music to buy, you may buy this one; it is a best buy.

3 out of 5 stars Revision of history.......2005-03-27

As usual, "Dixie," "The Bonnie Blue Flag," and other songs of a Southern genre are conspicuously absent. Why not throw in a couple of rap tunes to make this album truly "American?"

5 out of 5 stars Lovely CD--shameful misspelling on the song titles.......2002-11-22

I do not own this CD--though it appears it would be a wonderful album to listen to. I was compelled to write my review because of the misspelling of our national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner (as opposed to "The Star Bangled Banner" as it appears not once but twice on the song list). I do hope this error is corrected.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Patriotic Album.......2002-07-20

For all those patriots out there who want to listen to classical patriotic music, then get this album. This has a lot of tracks from yankee doodle march to the Washington post march. Even Amazing grace is here. The orchestras and the chorus here, gave there best performance ever.

Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Everybody should own this CD........2007-05-13

This show quickly became my second favorite musical of all time. (Phantom of the Opera is number one.) I listened to this CD three times and was then able to sing along with all of the songs. This show is all about dating and mating which makes it appropriate for all young and older adults. I highly recommend this CD to everybody!

5 out of 5 stars Great show & GREAT CD.......2007-03-27

I enjoyed the show so much I went to see it twice, I was delighted to find there was a CD. This is a great quakity item.

5 out of 5 stars I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change.......2007-03-23

My wife and I had just gotten back from New York and we had seen the off-broadway play "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" and thoroughly enjoyed it. This CD is great and whenever we hear it we think of that great night at the play and we laugh as if we were at the play itself.

4 out of 5 stars Change the disc please.......2007-01-04

ILYYPNC is neither a great musical revue nor a bad revue. It is simply a very good attempt at trying to make a bad situation look good (or a good situation look bad). It isn't a CD that I will listen too very often (such as PERSONALS - London Cast or RENT) but it also isn't one that will end up in a future yard sale of long forgotten CDs either. It is a bit above a mediocre musical, a bit contrived and somewhat predictable in its presentation, but you still should give it a shot to form your own opinion. As for me, perhaps I will attempt my own production with my theatre troupe in the future as it does have some good material along with some of its shortcomings. Purchasing this CD has at least cemented this on my list of "plays to look into further".

3 out of 5 stars Funny, but Forgettable........2006-11-20

I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERCECT, NOW CHANGE is a musical revue about love, dating, and marriage. The musical is composed of short scenes that begin with the creation of Adam & Eve, then fastforwards through history to the present day where a set of people are preparing to go on a date. The trials of dating and the single scene are explored, as well as what people loose when they get married. The second half of the show deals with married relationships as well as love among the elderly.

I know that there are many people who really like this show. It is a smaller show which is a nice switch from huge-casts and big production number musicals. There really isn't a storyline either, which makes for a different and somewhat interesting experience. However, I really don't like the show. There are some things I can relate to and there are some snippets that I find funny. Overall, though I found the show to basically be a bunch of stereotypical mishmashed scenes without any purpose. I like stories with a plot. I like stories with a purpose. If something has a plot and no purpose, I can deal with it. If it has a purpose, but little plot, I can deal with it. Take away the plot and the purpose and then I have trouble dealing with it.

There are some who would refer to the show as being wholesome. That's not true. The show is somewhat harmless, but it is not wholesome. It's not a show you can take a family to see. Much of the material is in the PG-13 range, though some definitely flies in R-rated territory. There's some minor foul language and lots and lots of sexual innuendo. The scenes are built upon a secular post-modern American worldview and if you don't share this worldview, some of the material is offensive.

The only song on the soundtrack that I thoroughly enjoyed is the song "Shouldn't I Be Less In Love With You?" The song is sung by a married man singing to his wife about his wonderment at how much he still loves her after all the years they've been married and all the things they've gone through. It's a wonderful, touching song. It's the only song that is memorable.

There are a few other tunes that are enjoyable, though not as memorable. These include:

"Why? `Cause I'm a Guy"

"On the Highway of Love"

I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE is an original musical revue. The lyrics are mostly funny and the cast members have great voices. However, the lack of plot and purpose make most of the material here forgettable.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

I Love You Because is sort of a Company for the 21st century, a romantic comedy examining the dating scene in New York City. Opening off-Broadway at the Village Theater in February 2006, I Love You Because originated as Ryan Cunningham and Joshua Salzman's thesis project at NYU's graduate musical theatre writing program. It's obvious their talent bears watching. Salzman's pop-jazz score is melodic, bright, and fresh sounding, and Cunningham's lyrics (he also wrote the book) are witty and natural. Colin Hanlon and David A. Austin play brothers Austin and Jeff who fall into relationships with best friends Marcy (Farah Alvin) and Diana (Stephanie D'Abruzzo), navigating through tricky issues such as their exes, rebound time, and being "just friends with benefits." I Love You Because is more than a coming-out party for a promising new musical-theater team; it's simply a lot of fun to listen to. --David Horiuchi

A modern-day musical love story, I LOVE YOU BECAUSE is a sweet and funny romantic comedy about contemporary dating in New York City. The Wall Street Journal called it "everything an off-Broadway musical should be ... a charming piece of work that will send you home smiling," and The New York Times concurred, praising it as "terrific, refreshing fun - filled with wit and zest." And the acclaimed score by the new writing team of Ryan Cunningham & Joshua Salzman was hailed as "impressive, distinctive, tuneful and smart."

5 out of 5 stars Amazing little musical.......2007-03-13

What a surprise! This cast album is fresh, exciting, and simply wonderful. Every song is fun and touching in its own way, though the authors tend to end a lot of their songs in the same style. But that's being picky. Most of the time I don't even notice. Very cute!

4 out of 5 stars I love this because:.......2007-03-09

A fresh new musical with an original score, now on my playlist for good. This 2006 off-broadway show incorporates humour with some strong messages about love, you get the humourous songs (We're just friends) and you get the love ballads (maybe we just made love) really a show id recommend to anyone. Favourite tracks include:
*Maybe we just made love
*Marcy's yours
*I love you because
*Because of You
*Just Not Now
*But I do
*Even though
Beautiful score, singers, lyrics and storyline, a must have of 2006 shows

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music- Not so hot performances!.......2007-03-09

I bought this recently and have fallen in love (no pun intended) with this score. Some songs like "maybe we just made love" and "Alone" are stunners. The only complaint is the performances- they aren't that great. Sometimes the tone is constant (and not in a good way) and the ends of phrases aren't completely developed. But the Musical is great- well worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Show- wonderful music.......2007-01-08

I saw this show last year and instantly fell in love with it. Its initmate setting, its loveable characters and hummable music really resonated with me. I was surprised that more of a buzz wasn't generated around this musical. When I saw the soundtrack was available, I immediately got it! What a wonderful show!

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack!.......2006-11-08

I saw this show in April and feel instantly in love with the music. It's a great score and the music is catchy and heartfelt. It's been a while since a really good (off)broadway sountrack has come out.

This was fast and easy, and made my brother's surprise 50th party a hit! Thanks!

2 out of 5 stars I can see why they did it again........2007-03-01

I love this musical, but after hearing the revival version I lost all interest in this one. I think the revival captures the essence of more of the characters with more songs, and its faster pace keeps everything moving along better than this album. I'd stick with the revival.

5 out of 5 stars Innocent Charm.......2006-03-30

This is a musical that couldn't have been created today. Featuring little-known and very young performers (except perhaps for Gary Burghoff, who would go on to play Radar O'Reilly in M.A.S.H. on TV) the show was literally workshopped into existence by the actors from a bunch of songs written by Clark Gesner and endorsed by Charles M. Schulz, the creator of the comic strip. In fact, the credit given for "the book" (script) is a fictitious charcter whose name is made up of the cast members initials!

This recording captures the charm and innocence of 1967 and is a testament to just how much one can achieve with a very small band and high-energy performances. Sure, the quality of the recoding ain't that great, but this was done nearly 40 years ago, so give it a break!

The actors lovingly (and laughingly, in Lucy's case) bring the PEANUTS characters to life and the experience is quite magical. I actually saw this show in New York in 1967 (I was 6) and hearing the music again brings back a flood of memories from that time.

Highly recommended for fans of PEANUTS, musicals, workshopped theatre and sentimentalists everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2006-03-11

I'm an accompianist and am working with a HighSchool Drama Department and their production of "You're a Good man Charlie Brown" This recording is excellent- and I would recommend it without any reservation because it closely follows the original script/orchestration. I do not recommend the 1999 CD version of the same play that was brought back to broadway. Too many "artistic liberties" were taken in it's recording, thus it is not even close to the original production. The simple feeling of the play is lost in the newer recording.

1 out of 5 stars Good songs.....but not the greatest recording.......2005-10-15

I was in this show and it was so much fun! The music is awesome! So after the show closed I went out and bought the soundtrack and I was not impressed at all. I realize that all of these adults are acting as kids, but I dont think that they even tried to make it sound good. And just like it says in the CD cover, Lucy's voice sounds like fingernails against a chalk-board: she fits right in. Overall I give this one star because the writing itself is good...but I would be downright embarassed if I was a part of this particular cast! I have never heard the original broadway cast recording, but just by listening to this, I can tell you one thing: buy the other recording!! Anything is better than this!!

This Ron Howard film parlays the troubled story of Nobel laureate John Forbes Nash Jr., a gifted Princeton mathematics professor tormented for decades by paranoid schizophrenia, into something considerably richer than typical Hollywood triumph-against-all-odds fare. Howard has teamed here again with frequent collaborator James Horner, and it's the composer who deftly shades the film's difficult emotional landscape and helps impart a compelling humanity. Horner's first task is not inconsiderable: musically portraying the arcane realm of mathematical theorems that are the story's backdrop. In doing so, the composer leans heavily on modern minimalist technique, bright flourishes that recur briefly throughout an orchestral score that increasingly reflects Nash's bleak inner landscape in its quietly somber and brooding tones. And while Horner has frequently been accused of excessively repeating himself in his scores, the neo-minimalist gambit employed on this reflectively pastoral, postmodernist soundscape neatly nips such criticism in the bud. Nash's triumph is ultimately an intensely personal one, well reflected in Welsh soprano Charlotte Church's lilting performance of the Horner/Will Jennings ballad "All Love Can Be." This enhanced CD also features notes by the director and composer, as well as exclusive photos and the film's trailer. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Haven't I heard this before?.......2007-06-20

As other reviewers will tell you yes this is another Horner machine made soundtrack. But it still sounds good! If you are a Horner fan by all means buy it otherwise "at your own risk"!

And another thing that gets me is no one even bothered to mention "Alicia Discovers Nash's Dark World" I happened to like this one this is the song that plays when he is in the hospital.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful score.......2007-02-09

James Horner's soundtrack for A BEAUTIFUL MIND is as psychologically intense as the film it so effectively embellishes.

Charlotte Church provides an appropriately eerie and largely non-verbal soprano to this remarkable motion picture score, yet one that would seem only quirky were it not so beautifully embedded in a musical stream that draws one inexorably and almost vicariously into the emotional turbulence of the Princeton mathematician John Nash.

There is an angelic nature to the shape and texture of this music, one that is able to turn demonic as the story line requires. Both by brilliance and by dementia, Nash seems the object of external forces, rising with supreme heroism (at least in the film's version of events) to conquer. The music is there at each score, coaxing the viewer into empathic solidarity with this deeply troubled man and his long-suffering and preternaturally beautiful wife.

This is mood music of the deeply engaging variety. Its lush tonal landscape is achieved under the baton of the composer himself. The score's vast range of volume and expression would certainly have made it a joy to watch in performance.

Alas, we don't have that.

But we have this.

An ethereal, compelling, even gripping tone poem. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Mind.......2006-08-09

Absolutely gorgeous - my husband keeps it in his car and listens to it whenever he's driving.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting, lovely, majestic.......2006-04-04

The sound track for "A Beautiful Mind" stayed with me long after the movie. The CD has all the themes that made the movie so emotionally powerfull. James Horner, composer and conductor, perfectly matches the excitement of genius and the terror of mental disability. Charlotte Church's clear and gentle voice compliments the music and used instrumentally creates a haunting refrain. I loved the movie and this music is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Dark.......2006-02-20

This is one of the darkest and most emotional soundtrack, and yet it is filled with more inspiring songs.

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

If you are a fan of Anthony Newley you will find this superb C.D. a welcome addition to your collection. It is easy to understand why this musical is considered Newley's finest. In addition to playing the lead role, he wrote, directed and composed many memorable pieces of music including "What Kind of Fool Am I", "Once I In a Lifetime", "Gonna Build a Mountain", and many, many more. His genious is well defined in this piece, it's a joy.

4 out of 5 stars a classic score of the 60's.......2005-04-27

STOP THE WORLD - I WANT TO GET OFF is one of the most fascinating musical theatre scores of the 1960s, the `new-style musical' was written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley and was largely tailored to Newley's vocal style.

Rarely has the score been bettered than on the original Broadway cast album, crisply reissued here on the Decca Broadway label. Anthony Newley and his pert leading lady, underrated British performer Anna Quayle, perform the score with flash and verve. The entire score is fantastic though the penultimate number "Someone Nice Like You" must count as one of the most beautiful love songs ever written for the musical stage.

Anna Quayle is a marvellous performer, sadly only really remembered for her role as the Baroness in the movie of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (a role that is great but does not represent all she was capable of), and Anthony Newley, who also headed the London company to perhaps ever greater acclaim, is in his element.

A top cast album.

5 out of 5 stars Great musical with great classic songs.......2003-07-13

This Bricusse-Newley musical is still fresh today. Some of the songs are classic. They include "What Kind of Fool am I" and "Once in a Lifetime". Newley's voice and vocal range was at its height when this album was recorded. If you like the music in this show then you will also like the music from "Roar of the Greasepaint, Smell of the Crowd".

5 out of 5 stars NOT ALONE ANYMORE.......2002-10-03

I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO LIKE HIM, SILLY ME . THIS WAS MY SECOND ALBUM I BOUGHT OF HIS ,IN A LONG LIST . NEWLEY'S STRONG VOICE AND PERSONALITY ARE THE VERY BEST.

YOU CAN ALMOST SEE THAT VERY EXPESSIVE FACE OF HIS, IT WA SA SHAME HIS PERFORMANCE WAS NOT CAPTURED ON FILM, STILL EVEN WITH OUT SEEING HIM. THE BLENDING OF SONG AND STORY ARE TIME LESS, THAT IT COULD BE ON BROADWAY TODAY WITHOUT BEING DATED.

THE STORY OF LITTLE CHAP AND EVIE , COULD BE ANY ONE OF US GOING THROUGH LIFE'S UP AND DOWNS.

5 out of 5 stars Anthony Newley's Finest Hours!.......2002-09-25

To say that 'Stop the World' was a revolutionary musical in the days of sugar and spice, nicey-nicey musicals would be an understatement. To suggest that Anthony Newley was one of the finest singer-songwriter-performers of our time would be like saying the Pope is Catholic. To say that Decca has done us all a favour by finally reissuing this tuneful cast recording on CD would however be ACCURATE!
Anthony Newley died in April 1999 after losing his battle with cancer. The battle of fame he never lost and left behind a wonderful collection of musicals, songs, tv and cabaret performances that we can love again and again. But the finest of all of Newley's output was this musical. Co-wrote with Leslie Bricusse, Anthony Newley made the role of Littlechap totally his own. Not even Sammy Davis Jnr, Joel Gray or Tony Tanner in the film version could match that unique quality of style and originality that Newley exudes in this fantastic tour de force role.
For fans of musicals unfamiliar with Newley's work, you will not be sorry when you buy this CD. For Newley fans - why haven't you already bought your copy!!
Enjoy, one and all, Anthony Newley at his very best.
