Laundry [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews
Bill Clifford, Southeast Performer
An electric mix of blues, funk, swing, and plain staight-ahead rock make this debut a keeper. Much like her sisters in soul,(Melissa Etheridge, Joan Osbourne, Jennifer Nettles). Sonia Leigh's "LAUNDRY" is probably better heard in a live setting. Try and catch her in an intimate Atlanta club while you have a chance.

About the Artist
This is Sonia's second CD under Zonolite Records. She has recieved a number of awards; finalist in 99 annual GMIA songwriter's contest, winner CJ's songwriter contest, finalist 98 metro Atlanta Lilith Fair Competition, ect.. She performs mainly on the Atlanta bar, coffee house, and festivals scene. Sonia's largest crowd was just over 7,000.

Album Description
Is a blend of folk and rock, with a female vocalist comparable to Cheryl crow or Melissa Etheridge.

Colombian superstar Shakira's first English-language disc, Laundry Service, carries the pointed credit "Entire Album Produced by Shakira." That might be a signal to U.S. fans who helped two of her previous discs go platinum under the media radar--a sign that this planned breakthrough has more to offer than the input of a score of image makers and outside writers. And it does; even the occasional clunky lyric comes directly from her overflowing heart. Laundry Service's meld of danceable pop and rockier ideas and textures follows the similar path of the singer-songwriter's previous work. Indeed, for all its high-end production values, the record is ultimately one of the least glossy crossover vehicles imaginable. Despite an occasional lean toward Celine Dion territory ("Underneath Your Clothes"), it has a freshness that's sure to win over new listeners even after the first single, the sly "Whenever, Wherever," has reached the saturation point. While still not fully formed as an artist, she's getting close to something of her own--something that may flower after she dumps the vocal Alanis-isms. For now, it's still a pleasure to watch her grow. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars May I present the birth of La Shaki Rubia! [translation: Blonde Shakira].......2007-07-18

When I first heard this album, it took me a while to adjust to Shakira's distinctive bent, edgy intonation and raw yowling, along with pure, unbridled passion. The year was 2001. Shakira Mebarek had already spent years as a well-known singer/songwriter in Mexico, Central and South America. It was time that the Yanquis get acquainted with her [i.e. music lovers in the United States]. So, Shakira penned her English-language debut, LAUNDRY SERVICE [later released as SERVICIO DE LAVANDERIA, to her Spanish-speaking audience]. Her combination of Latin, rock and Arabic rhythms proved just as infectious in English (one of the three languages she speaks fluently) as in Spanish.

Some of the best songs on this album include "Objection [Tango]," with a Spanish version "Te Aviso, Te Anuncio," and "Whenever, Wherever," with it's spanish counterpart, "Suerte." What's more, Shakira showed her range as a soulful pop singer in slower ballads like "Underneath Your Clothes," and "The One." What's more, who can forget her sultry, sexy "Que Me Quedes Tu"? This intelligent and accomplished singer [then twenty-four years old] showed us her singing chops and her true ability to connect audiences of all backgrounds and lanaguages together with her tunes. Though, I must say that, if pressed, her best album by far is DONDE ESTAN LOS LADRONES? [her 1998 release], LAUNDRY SERVICE is a very appealing CD to own. I definitely reccomend it, six years later.

5 out of 5 stars Great cross over!.......2007-05-11

i have been a shakira fan long before she decided to crossover to the american market and this is an excellent way to do so....i love hearing the english version of ojos asi and getting to know shakira in a different light and by knowing all the words she's singing and the meaning behind them.

5 out of 5 stars PODEROSA EN AMBOS IDIOMAS!!!.......2007-05-06

4 out of 5 stars A guilty pleasure.......2007-05-02

I really don't care much for pop music, much less latin pop music when that crossover explosion happened (which I completely blame on Ricky Martin for creating) but I'll make an exception with Shakira's "Laundry Service". The first time I actually heard her music was when the music video for "Whatever, Whenever" came out six years ago. The song was pure ear candy with its infectious pop hooks. So I eventually bought Shakira's "Laundry Service". Much to my surprise I actually enjoyed the cd. The music is filled with catchy pop/rock hooks without being overly polished. I think the songwriting is kinda weak and at times silly. I thought Shakira sounds the best singing in her native tongue than in english but that's just me. Another flaw is Shakira's vocals which is somewhat shrill at times but otherwise this album is a fun, guilty pleasure of mine.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Sound, a Good First Crossover!.......2006-11-25

This is an excellent first English Language disc by an artist who was already well established in the Latin world. The rock sounds are here especially with Underneath Your Clothes, which sounds a lot like Aerosmith's Dream On. Those of you who enjoyed her superior prior works (Pies Descalzo and Donde Estan Los Ladrones) may be a little disappointed in the commerical direction that this one went (take the pop candy song Whenever). Also some of the English lyrics are really non-sensical and we are not sure what the title Laundry Service has to do with anything on the disc. This is what prevented me from giving the disc 5 stars. Shakira has a good sense for great sound and music is her strong point over lyrics. But her Lebonese roots engrained in many of her sounds gives her music a unique feel to it that will keep her as a megastar for many years to come!

I always lisend to play music or as my neighbor always said music without words which is classical music. I listend to Shakira and thought "What a terrible CD" because my sisters favorite was my least favorite but my mom also liked it so i listend to other songs and found one that sounded familiar "Whenever, Whearever" so i listend to the others and they grew on me so now i'm one of the biggest Shakira fans

5 out of 5 stars Good CD... Nothing extraordinary but still good..........2004-04-21

To all of you who just knew Shakira after this album, let me tell you something... you haven't heard nothing at all yet.

Go get a few lessons of spanish and listen her first album (Pies Descalzos)... THAT'S MUSICAL POETRY... Best latin songwriter so far and very good performer.

5 out of 5 stars And this isn't the best of her.......2004-03-13

Well... I know tha now, everybody loves Shakira... and yes, this is an amazing album...

I really love Underneath your clothes and Que me quedes tu. Didn't love english version of Ojos Asi.

If you like it, you SHOULD have Donde estan los ladrones, THAT IS HER BEST ALBUM... Inevitable is probably her best song... so, learn spanish and welcome to latin world.

Oh... also she is SO nice... i can wait for the Tour of the Moongose DVD... and includes MEXICO City!!!! yay (i went to that concert)

5 out of 5 stars One Killer Album!.......2004-01-26

This is by far my favorite Shaki CD that I own. And it comes with 3 new remixes and MTV's Making the Video of Objection Tango and a live performance. All of the songs are great English or Spanish. You'll love this album.

Also check out Shakira's "Pies Descalzos" "Donde Estan Los Ladrones" "The Remixes" "Grandes Exitos" "Coleccion de Oro" and "MTV Unplugged" These albums are awesome too.

5 out of 5 stars I need a Berlitz course.......2004-01-20

This is a great album. Big Fun, as they say. Interestingly, many of the best songs are sung in Spanish, which I do not know. Track 8 is infectious, and I don't understand a darn word of it. I agree with the reviewer from SF who comments that it is sort of a crime that they want Shakira to sing in English. She is an excellent songstress in Spanish. It certainly looks to me like the CD/DVD package is worth the extra dollar. Objection is a great tune, thoughtful and expressive.

2 out of 5 stars Like Mustard and Peanut Butter: Some Combos Just Don't Work.......2004-03-29

Everything about this album is better than the music itself. The layout sparkles with a quirky 60's feel; the production reflects another world-class feat by the Elefante brothers; the photography captures the band's spirit, even though it has a penchant for the admittedly cute lead singer. Even the arrangements are tasteful in the scope of what the band is doing; nothing's overdone or out-of-place. The musicians themselves obviously have talent, from the guitars to the horn section to the lead vocals. But it just doesn't ever gel, except in "Wonderful Wonder" and then, only barely, as if the band were locked in a small room and held at contract-point until they recorded a quality single.

The attempts to break out of traditional structures by inserting chords that don't work or by not completing a phrase and letting it fall off into outer space simply do not work. They sabotage the songs and prevent them from building up any emotional momentum. When the songs ends, you feel like nothing has happened -- you haven't journeyed into other atmospheric worlds; you don't feel any particular emotion; you're not effervescing with adrenaline. You won't cry. You won't think much. You won't be driven to your knees, but you might tap your foot for a few bars or giggle here and there.

"Scrub" just isn't meant to be taken seriously. It's probably best enjoyed while you're studying, working, cleaning house or doing anything but actively listening. That way you probably won't notice the structural problems or attempts at innovation. It honestly seems like it was intended as background music, and as that, it does the job.

5 out of 5 stars Music fan from So. California.......2000-07-21

This is a very cool CD. High energy with creative lyrics. It's a lot of fun. Their new CD, New & Improved is even better. New lead singer and a little bit different style. The first single, New & Improved, really pumps! I just saw them live last night and they really know how to put on a show! If you get a chance to see them live, do it!

4 out of 5 stars Don't Listen to the Kansas guy/girl.......2000-05-03

I really liked this cd, and I don't normally like this kind of music! But Wavy Gravy was probably the best song on here! I love music, and I'd say I'm fairly good at picking music out! I'd defenetly recommend this cd!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good........1999-09-13

The cd is pretty good. Lovely Feet is really awesome, but some of the other songs are slightly boring- such as Wavy Gravy. If you're into Christian music and want to listen to something a little bit different, you should try this cd.

4 out of 5 stars It's OK.......1999-08-07

I think a lot more people would like it if you could listen to wavy gravy.I bought a CD called organic culture. It had wavy gravy on it and it was the best song on there!!!

5 out of 5 stars Tales Of Elegant and Beautiful Music.......2002-01-13

After watching the ballet of 'Tales of Beatrix Potter', not only was I intrique by the beautiful choreography and stunning sets but also by the superb music composed especially by John Lanchberry. This soundtrack from the film demonstrates the many elements, moods and style of music that compliments the visual dancing of the ballet. John Lanchberry utilises Victorian themes as the basis for the ballet and comes up with a completely new score. There are 8 tracks in this CD and each track is devoted to individual characters and stories that make up the ballet score (though it is not the complete score) nevertheless, it is still enchanting. Waltzes dominate the score and it is plain to see why as the melodies transports us to a realm of flight and fantasy and you get lost in the strains of the violins. The finale cleverly combines the strains of the waltz to culminate to a frenzied polka. Simple but most effective. Clearly, John Lanchbery score conjures the dance movements in the mind and by doing that he has succeded in making us believe we are in a world of Beatrix Potter. The quality of sound is commendable considering it was recorded before the digital age. Music is performed by the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House,Covent Garden and it has never sounded so brilliant before. My wish is that sometime in the future, a complete score would be available as this is the prime example of a modern classic, therefore a score in it's entire form would be hail as a masterpiece.

    2 out of 5 stars Where's Ian?.......2004-06-06

I'm giving this one star because Ian Hunter is on it, and one star for The Other Man.I think it's a great song. I find the rest of the cd pretty ordinary. I think it's really kind of false advertising too. I don't want to hear some other guy singing when Ian Hunter's name on the cd. Maybe Ian just didn't have the songs. Anyway,it's just kind of a disappointing cd all around.I think it's the weakest I've heard from Ian.

    5 out of 5 stars Mott's Dirty Laundry.......2003-12-06

This album started out as a fun venture in Abbey Road Studios when Norwegian Keyboard player and long time friend of Ian Hunter's (Ex Mott the Hoople) Casino Steel was going in to record a few numbers with some of his friends going under the name of Gringo Starr's All Stars (cheeky little name if ever I have heard one), knowing that Ian Hunter was at a loose end after just tragically losing his off sider, main collaborator, and all round good guy Mick Ronson to the dreaded cancer the previous year (1993), after completing the Mick Ronson memorial Concerts at London's Hammersmith Odeon. (The building that used to be the Hammersmith Odeon may be called many different things due to commercial reasons over the last few years, but it will always be the Hammersmith Odeon to me, and one of the finest venues ever to go and see your favorite band.) All the artists on this album in some way or another took part in this concert.

The band in the studio was Casino Steel, well respected Solo artist from his Norwegian Homeland; Ian Hunter (ex Mott the Hoople); Honest Plain John of the Boys and the Crybabies; Darrell Bath of U.K Subs; Dog's D'Amour, and The Godfathers; Vom of Doctor and The Medics, surely one of the most underrated drummers of his era. The infamous Blue Weaver took turns on Keyboards with Casino Steel, and holding down the Bass guitar responsibilities was a certain Glen Matlock of Sex Pistols and Rich Kids fame.

In fourteen days eighteen songs were completed, twelve of which appeared on this fine collection, three of which are Hunter songs, four of which are Hunter collaborations, and the other five are shared by the rest of the Band. Subsequently the record company asked for a name change and Gringo Starr's All-Star's was dropped for the more original and more amusing "Ian Hunter's Dirty Laundry".

First song is 'Dancing on the Moon' and its title's reflecting how the Band felt being in this position, total freedom. So let's just go out and enjoy ourselves, written in the studio (which is often the best way to keeping it spontaneous), done in the studio in one take and the band didn't know what they were doing at all.

After this we get another rocker in the amusing 'Another Fine Mess', with lyrics from Hunter about the old touring days of the Hunter/Ronson band.

Then showing that life is not all laughs and frivolity we get the somber 'Scars', showing that in all personnel relationships we have to get through the troughs as well as the peaks. Hunters singing of his own lyrics have never been more poignant.

Of course as soon as this little ode finishes, boys will always immediately revert to being boys and we get the first non-Hunter song in the fabulous romp through Darrell Bath's 'Never Trust a Blonde' with delightful sexy lyrics (not sexist, could be a bloke dying his barnet). a booming drum beat, raucous backing vocals, tinkling piano, screaming guitar solos, and a knowing wink to life on the wild side.

To show this really was meant as a band effort, we then get a jaunt through Honest Plain John's 'Psycho Girl' with it's jangly guitar refrain and hypnotic chorus.

The centre piece of the album is a rolling take on what could be the follow up to Mott the Hoople's final single 'Saturday Gigs', which was a look back at the six years of the life of a band, their achievements and failures. 'My Revolution' looks back at the proceeding twenty years, how things have not really changed that much apart from the slow aging process we all go through, and how we all think we have become smarter. But that I leave for you to decide. 'My Revolution' does have the knowing lyrics "No one told our wrinkles what to wear". The song is brought to a rousing conclusion very much in "All you need is Love" Beatles style with Ian Hunter adlibbing lyrics over the top of the fading chorus. 'Good Girls', another Honest Plain John song, could be "The Kinks" from their sixties heyday. 'Red Letter Day' is a great Hunter song that he had held onto for years without ever getting a decent occasion to get it down on tape. Well, this seemed the perfect time and was a beautiful ballad about returning home to your loved ones after time spent apart whilst going through rough times, and the determination to try and make up for lost time. It also includes a stunning emotional guitar solo from Darrell Bath.

The Band then romp through three road songs that most people would die for to have in their repertoire, each single one would get people leaping about on the dance floor at a college hop.

Hidden away as last song on this collection is one of Ian Hunter's most honest soul bearing laments, 'The Other Man', a song about taking your partner back after an affair with your best friend and how someone may take the partner back and never forget, but possibly forgive. But not the Other Man, who should of known better than to mess with your lady. 'The Other Man' has to be one of the best songs that Ian Hunter ever recorded. It is a shame that it did not get much exposure on its release, as it sure would of tugged on a few hearts strings and perhaps twanged a few guilt strings in other directions.
    Mott the Dog.

5 out of 5 stars An All Star Rock n Roll Circus!.......2002-05-13

Nice to see such praise for this rock n roll masterpiece! I'm a bit perplexed by the negative reviews here, though. I don't think a band composed of "obscure European" musicians immediately equates to substandard music. Such an indictment notwithstanding, the music-smiths contributing to this album are far from obscure. On the contrary, on guitar and vocals we have both Honest John Plain and Darrell Bath, the duo that formed the brilliant good-time rock n roll band, The Crybabys in 1990. Plain is a founding member of the seminal punk rock band, The Boys, and Bath's exhaustive resume includes work with the UK Subs, The Vibrators, and Tempole Tudor, as well as such jewels in the crown of rock n roll as The Dogs D'Amour and The Quireboys. Darrell has since found success both as a solo artist and with his own band, Sabre Jet, has most recently performed with Dan Baird (ex-Georgia Satellites) and is also the newest member of The Chasers with Danny McCormack of the Wildhearts (Whew! Now that's what I call an impressive career!). Completing the band on Dirty Laundry are Casino Steel, also from The Boys, Glen Matlock, bassist for the Sex Pistols, and Vom, drummer from the quintessential German punk band Die Toten Hosen. So much for "obscure."
Regardless of the ensemble band, it is still a formidable task to find even a single fault with an absolute gem of an album like Dirty Laundry! I suppose if one is a Mott the Hoople/Ian Hunter traditionalist, perhaps this piece is too much of a departure from Hunter's previous work. Remember, though, that this only became an Ian Hunter album after his contribution to the project gradually increased to the point where it simply made the most sense to release it under Hunter's name. The project actually began life as Casino Steel's Gringo Starrs, and if one approaches this album out of appreciation for the work of the all star musicians showcased here, it's absolutely irresistible! I for one, arrived at Dirty Laundry following years as a die-hard fan of The Dogs D'Amour and Quireboys and Darrell Bath's work with both of those bands. Delving further resulted in the discovery of Darrell's earlier band, The Crybabys, and subsequently Dirty Laundry. And with both Bath and Plain back together again on this album, as well as Steel performing and Matt Dangerfield, yet another member of The Boys contributing to the song-writing (as does Andrew Matheson of the Hollywood Brats by the way!), Dirty Laundry rightly should be considered a The Boys/Crybabys collaboration, with Hunter the ring leader of this rock n roll circus!
As for the songs, first of all I must admit to a bias toward the ones that Darrell Bath had a hand in writing (as he holds the illustrious title of My Favorite Guitarist on the Planet Earth!), but in my opinion, the songs that truly steal the spotlight are the opening track "Dancing On The Moon," "Never Trust a Blonde" (also featured on the Sabre Jet album, but done miles better on Dirty Laundry), "Everyone's a Fool," and "Scars." The first three are straight up good time rock n roll that positively ooze swagger and groove, complete with sassy guitars and honky tonk pianos. "Scars" is superbly atmospheric, slowing the pace down to conjure up vivid images of late-night, post-party solitude, when you're struck-out and drifting slowly back to sobriety. "Invisible strings," written solo by Hunter, bears an uncanny resemblance to Rod Stewart's earliest solo work. If you didn't know better you'd swear it was a "lost " track from "Every Picture Tells a Story," or "Never A Dull Moment." Of the comparatively less satisfying tracks, I find "Another Fine Mess" A bit too pedestrian for my tastes, and the remake of "Good Girls" from the Crybabys debut album, while more up tempo and polished here, pales in comparison to the original. Still, two mediocre tracks out of 12 isn't bad at all! Hunter and friends sound like they're having a blast (which apparently actually was the case in the studio, by most reports) and the album is non-stop fun straight through. And just like the reluctant acceptance that even the greatest of parties has to end sometime, the only real somber piece is the closing track, "The Other Man," though it still manages to serve as an appropriate coda to this cornucopia of gritty, honest to goodness rock n roll.
That this record was produced and actually released in a decade that shunned true rock like an embarrassment is further testament to Hunter, Plain, Bath, and their comrades' dedication to real rock n roll, the way it was meant to be played and heard!
Incidentally, Bath and Plain also contributed songs to Hunter's follow up offering "Artful Dodger," which is, alas, harder to find than the proverbial needle in the haystack.
To anyone who enjoyed Dirty Laundry, I would highly recommend giving a listen to Plain and Bath's Crybabys (the sophomore album of which is currently only available through small independent French label, Action Records, but well worth the hassle to one's hands on!), plus Bath's work with The Dogs D'Amour on the "All Or Nothing" EP and the "More Uncharted Heights of Disgrace" CD, as well as his solo work.

4 out of 5 stars Ballad of a Great Album.......2001-06-22

Ian Hunter is the secret weapon for all aspiring songwriters, and vocalist. He may not be the best singer, but he gets his point across. These songs are pure magic. "Psycho Girl," has a cool Buddy Holly meets punk vibe going on, and Invisable Strings is a song that Rod Stewart wishes he could still write. "Red Letter Day," is another stand out. Nice and raw, and fun.

1 out of 5 stars Bloody hell, Morse!.......2000-07-21

An insult to Ian Hunter fans everywhere. "Invisible Strings" is the only song here which bears repeated listening. And Ian's version of "Red Letter Day" is vastly inferior to Scott Folsom's. The non-Hunter songs are a joke. Shame on you Ian! Mott the Cat.

This CD is the shiznit!! Anyone got any recommendations on similar bands or can anyone tell me what bands these guys are playing with now?

5 out of 5 stars Tizzzzight! Hasn't left my CD player yet!.......2004-03-16

I first saw Porterhouse at the Aladdin Theater in Portland, Oregon, where they were opening for Maceo Parker; I ended up liking them more than Maceo! These guys had me from the first few notes of "Thumbs Up", which they opened with. Now, see, I'm a drummer, and I have a hard time dancing because I am usually too busy analyzing hemeolas and grooves and whatnot, but I couldn't help but dance myself silly. As others have said, it is obvious that they have serious jazz training and chops (just like yours truly - we know our kind when we see/hear them!), but they don't let that work against the fatness of the groovesmanship. The intricacy is still there, and that's what keeps them from being a 'jamband' - they have tight transitions and unison figures that hook you...HARD.

I can't recommend this album enough, along with another release of theirs, "Prime Cuts". I bought both, and neither can seem to find their way out of my CD player now. Yup - it's THAT good. Hope to see them playing together again real soon. (You hear me, Joey and Josh? DO IT. And drop me a line if Brian's not up for it another round - I'd gladly come play with you at the drop of a hat!)

5 out of 5 stars Hippies love the Funk.......2001-06-16

I recently went to an all day funk fest in Long Beach. Porterhouse started the day out with an impressive bang. It was the first time I saw the band live, and I was surprised to see how much the hippies love the funk. They just cant stop dancing. I thought I was at a Fish or GD show. I am a pretty much just an enthusiast of great musicians, especially in classical jazz. These kids kick, spin, and bounce through an obvious jazz education, and suit the tastes of any lover of music. Whether you love music for the talent, the mental escape(trip), making your car shake, or just for dancing, you will dig Thumbs Up.

The band is AWESOME! If you haven't listened you're really missing out! Their destined for the top ten. Keep up the great back beat Micah. Can't say enough.

All I can say is I Love THE PORTERHOuse QUINTET! These guys jam with blazin' keyboards and those REAL FUNKY SOUNDS, it definitely makes me feel the GROOVE! GO PORTERHOUSE! Thanks for sharing your talents, i like you better than Karl Densin or the GREY-BOY ALL-STARS. Thanks Again, the c.d.'s a bargain!

      Album Description

2007 reissue of this album, which has been out of print for nearly a decade. This project was initiated in the summer of 1994 by keyboardist Casino Steel, formerly of the Punk band The Boys, who was planning to record an album with some friends and invited Ian Hunter to join them in the studio. What emerged was a hard rocking affair that saw Hunter return closer to his Mott-ley musical roots than he had in recent years. The roll call of musicians involves reads like a British Punk/New Wave who's who! Specifically guitarist's Honest John Plain and Darrell Bath. Bath could list the UK Subs, Dogs D¹Amour and the Godfathers on his CV while Plain had been a Lurker and, with Steel, one of The Boys. A link with the frontman's Mott The Hoople past showed up in the shape of Blue Weaver, who took turns on keyboards with Casino Steel. Sex Pistols bass player Glen Matlock completed the cast list. This release consists of twelve songs; three are Hunter songs, four Hunter collaborations and the other five originate from the rest of the band. Cherry Red.
