WOW.......2006-02-28

From the first time that I heard Bjork's lyrical vocal passages to the first time that I layed ears on her crazy outbursts, I knew she was insane. Bjork has to be one of the most incredibly talented and creative musicians of our time.
This disc can in no way do justice to what Bjork is capable of, but it is a marvelous interpretation of what she has done. The disc features the cello on quite a number of tracks and also employs pizzicato and portimento techniques to capture some of the eerie sounds that Bjork uses on her albums.
This is a remarkable album as a stand alone - and considering how lowsy many of the tribute albums have been lately, it is quite an accomplishment.
I would recommend that everyone - from Bjork fans to John Cage fans alike - invest in this disc. You won't regret it!

This price, both used and new, is absurd........2006-03-31

This two disc compilation is beautiful and moving just like the art of capoeira. I would certainly purchase this, but not at the expense of reason. It is a shame that price mongers take advantage of enthusiasts, who wish nothing more than to partake in the cultural experiences of Brazil from the convenience of their homes. Often, people who can't afford to make the trip personally or have local access to music or artifacts within a reasonable distance go through platforms like Amazon to buy things at "fair" market prices advertised through the net and television. Do not be a victim of the hype because there are other vendors out there who will not price gauge!Go to capoeiraarts page and search this same artist to receive this same cd, brand new for a fraction of the price.

BEAUTIFUL!!!.......2005-05-10

I don't have this CD set, yet, but I heard some demos of some of the songs on it playing in the background of the www.capoeiraarts.com website. And the moment I heard them... especially "Pedir O Axé"... the music blew my mind away, and I said to myself "I MUST HAVE THIS SET!!!". I plan on buying it very soon! (PS: I am also a Capoeirista of about 5 1/2 years, so this music is very special to me).

This is a fabulous CD set. Mestre Acordeon is thought to be one of the best musicians in capoeira to date. This is a must-have for any collection.

This compilation is a great way to get introduced to the music of capoeira. This compilation spans several decades and shows the way the music of Capoeira is growing and evolving. The CD's are set up so that one CD is more of a training style of CD. The arrangements and instrumentation are kept very simple and enerjetic. The other, although still very much Capoeira music, has more arranging and added instrumentation not normally found in Capoeira music to give a more artistic interpretation of the music of Capoeira. Very pleasant to either listen to or train to. Either way, you have two beautiful CD's packaged together that showcase many years of dedication to the art of Capoeira that shows in the quality of the the music.

Bjork "Joga" U.K. 11-Track Maxi-Single.......2003-04-02

1. Joga(Howie B. Main Mix)-This track is a variation on the album version with very few minor differences (namely extra beats and a few new noises at the end). The beats are more "thumping" than on the album version, but the strings are retained so it sounds just as beautiful.
2. Joga(String & Vocal Mix)-This is basically an orchestral version of the album track. very nice.
3. Joga(Buzz Water Mix)-a toned down mix. Mostly vocals and some soothing keyboard and distant beats (which you can barely hear, sounds like when someone is wearing headphones and you can barely hear the beat of the song they're listening to). Further into the song, they put in a kind of annoying noise.
4. All Is Full Of Love(Choice Mix)-This is the album version without the harpsichord. I bet the majority of people couldn't tell the difference though.
5. Joga(Album Version)
6. Sod Off-WONDERFUL non-album track with very powerful strings. This is Bjork putting her foot down.
7. Immature (Bjork's Version)-a very stripped down version of the album track except with newly recorded vocals. Think acapella with piano. I actually like this version a lot.
8. So Broken-another fantastic b-side. this one features acoustic guitars. nice.
9. Joga(Alec Empire Mix)/10. Joga(Alec Empire Hardcore Mix/11. Joga(Alec Empire Hardcore Mix-all 3 of these sounded the same to me. It's basically just NOISE with scattered vocals. Ruines the song, totally useless.
So aside from the last 3 tracks and the unecessary "all is full of love" version, this CD is worth getting, mostly for the B-sides

More calmingly effective than "yoga":>.......2003-02-23

This contains ALL the remixes of jóga, and all the other songs from the three-part jóga single.
The howie b. remixes are great, the buzzwater remix is beauteous, the string and vocal mix is gloriously stripped down to its orchestral roots...and the original is the strikingly beautiful song we know and love...and the Alec Empire remixes are...Noisily energetic and gorgeous:>
The Choice mix of all is full of love, however, is unnecessary and without much discernable difference from the orignal at all. But besides all that, the extra songs, such as Björk's groovy, semi a-capella version of immature, the dramatic Sod Off, and the heartwrenching and beautiful So Broken, really aid in taking one on a glorious musical journey.
This is a great release no Björk fan should be without.

It's time to play ball.......2001-10-09

This little CD is a mini gem that comprises all of the Joga singles into one EP, if you will. There are 2 great mixes of Joga one is done by Howie B., the other is the Buzz Water mix. They are minimalistic mixes and are a nice counterpoint to the menace at the end of the album. The B-sides are of mixed quality. Sod Off is excellent in parts, but is incredibly grating in others, the song is a puzzler. So Broken is a guitar driven song that has Bjork go way off the handle with the vocals, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Lastly, here comes Alec Empire. The hardcore master comes and offers his services; basically the songs are Alec going into a self-indulgent rage of hardcore beauty. If you started the song a minute in, there is no way you'd know it was a remix, but it doesn't matter. They're still pretty damn solid, and I like the way the vocals are worked into the remix. Overall, if you're willing to pay an admittedly steep price, you should get your money's worth.

Alec Empire=My savior.......2001-08-27

This CD is a must for two reasons: 1) So Broken: One of Bjork's all-time greatest B-sides (and true fans will know what an honor that title is), with beautiful, soaring flamenco guitar in place of the usual sonic oddities under Bjork's always beautiful lyrics and vocals. 2) The Alec Empire Joga, the scariest, most engrossing, most unbelievably different Bjork reconstruction ever. Don't be thrown off by it, it's a dificult piece, but I promise you it's all there, just keep listening. To be perfectly honest, I've had this disc for some time, and couldn't even begin to tell you about many of the other tracks. Those tracks are so standout they eclipse everything else. Buy it buy it buy it.

Best Song Off Homogenic.......2001-05-13

This song is pure poetry-evocative of so many emotions. Highly recommend you see the video representation of this song as well. My favorite mix is the Buzz Water mix.

2 of the 5 Best Bjork B Sides!.......2000-10-25

This album has two of the best Bjork Bsides, Sod Off (amazing and empowered) and So Broken (tragic fighting against inevitable heartbreak). The others are Play Dead, Sweet Intuition (It's Oh So Quiet Single 2) and Charlene (Isobel single). So go buy! Find!

Well... Joga is a great song. It has all the Bjorkean elements that we like so much. But among all the four tracks presented on this single, one simply stands as, perhaps, one of the saddest songs ever sung. The lyrics are beautiful and the music is well written. But it is its simplicity and Bjork's performance that makes it shine. Simplicity because it uses only two spanish guitars (wisely separated for two channels) and Bjork's crushed, heartbroken, crying voice. This track is almost six minutes long and the singer carefully constructs a crescendo of heartbroken feelings that literally end up in a desperate cry of pain. This one song is a showcase for Bjork: it takes us back to those milestone songs (and singers) who made history with their powerhouse performances (like Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas"). It's simply one of those songs/performances who are able to transmit a state of feeling that leaves no one indifferent. A triumph of performance! A triumph of production! A must buy!

So Broken is so good.............2000-09-18

This album alone should be purchased for the last track So Broken. I first heard this song at a friends party and ever since then i tried desperatly to find it........then i did and i now listen to this song on repeat constantly. The other songs on this single are great also but So Broken takes the cake.

This song shows how versitile Bjork is. There is no other instrument except Bjorks voice and a spanish guitar. This song will leave you breathless and wanting more. It's a very sad song yet i can't get enough of it. It makes me want to Flemenco dance.

Every hardcore Bjork fan should here this song.

joga is possibly the greatest bjork song created,but the b sides on this single are well worth a spin, "so broken "with a bit of a flamenco , spanish sound and "sod off "which i like lyrically are lovely.

I love this single! The b-sides alone make it worth getting. My heart just breaks when I hear her on "Sod Off". She has such power in her music. A must have!
