Album Description
28 Track Cd Anthology of his original 1960's recordings for the Monument Label! Apocalyptic apes, black magic, inbred families, wiccanism, libertarianism and heartfelt pleas for tolerance and compassion. These are the wonderful tunes of renowned folklorist Jimmy Driftwood. Lovingly remastered and presented here for the first time on CD. Hear the "Hillbilly Alan Lomax" chronicle ritual dismemberment, limbs that communicate from beyond the grave and other charming facets of Arkansas mountain life. You have been warned. First time on CD! Deluxe collectors 16 page full colour package featuring original LP artwork and exclusive liner notes. All tracks are remastered 2006 from the original master tapes! Compiled and curated by noted musician (Snog, Soma, Black Lung) and film composer David Thrussell.

If you are feeling blue than this is for you.......2006-04-02
I listened to all 82 of these songs(about three and a half hours worth) over and over again for about six months grinning the whole time. I don't think I had a bad day the whole time. This comprehensive box set is a culmination of all of Jimmie Driftwoods RCA/Victor recordings. These recordings were done between 1958-1962 which before this box set was released could only found on the seven following record albums: EARLY AMERICA FOLK SONGS 1958, WILDERNESS ROAD 1959, HOW THE WEST WAS WON 1959, WESTWARD MOVEMENT 1960, TALL TALES IN SONG 1960, SONGS OF BILLY YANK AND JOHNNY REB 1961, DRIFTWOOD AT SEA - SEA SHANTIES 1962, and a couple of singles --- These albums are still sought after and are hard to find. They can sell for anywhere from $20.00 to $120.00 each. For the price of this box set it is a steal plus they are all remastered on CD for the best sound quality. It comes with a 23 page booklet with some old pictures, bio and commentary by Jimmie Driftwood. If you want material from his several other albums from other than RCA, then all I can say is happy hunting. I've spent about two years and $300.00 buying the records and converting them to CD's.
Driftwood lives.......2006-02-20
How wonderful to see this collection; though I haven't heard it yet (great first line for a review? Dohh!!) About 15 years ago I got 5 or 6 cassette tapes of Jimmy Driftwood, I think from the Folk Center there in Mountain View, AR; can't remember. I played the [whatever] out of several of them, so inspired by the character of his voice and the quality of the story-telling through song. I hadn't even known there were words for Soldier's Joy! And I really loved the Civil War album he did, so I'm glad to see my two favorites on this collection, Billy Yank and Johnny Reb and Won't You Come Along and Go.
What a truly wonderful, enlightened, intriguing man he was. Imagine having a teacher like him in school! I wish we could see ALL his music (he did at least one great one for children) on CD. For that matter, I'd like to find out if there's any video footage of him singing; there must be.
If you haven't heard Driftwood, do so!! You'll be moved to imagine, to reminisce, to foot-tap and smile. The selections here are a great comprehensive start.
Great Collection.......2003-09-01
I grew up with the album from which the cover comes and never forgot it. As an adult I still sang Tennessee Stud, Razorback Steak, and Maid of Argenta. Ever get a strange song in your head? The only way to get it out is to hear it. Honestly, I would have been happier with smaller installments ... but this set is simply fantastic. Often, I only really like a few songs from a given artist so I would never have made this kind of expenditure, not knowing more than I did of his music. This set though is great because I like all of the songs. Tennessee Stud, Razorback Steak and Maid of Argenta are indicative of all of the rest of the songs. If you like them, you will like all of the set.
Btw, the packaging is great. The three CD's come in a very durable box that looks like a really thick LP. Inside, they are nestled in three cut outs that hold the individual CDs. :) It makes a WONDERFUL gift!
True gems from an underappreciated American talent.......2001-04-11
These three CDs are a treasure chest of American folk songs from singer/songwriter Jimmie Driftwood. Although "Battle of New Orleans" is his most widely-known song, there are dozens of other great tunes that really deserved airplay, too. Driftwood could mix humor, emotion, and history like no other. Tunes from six of his albums are faithfully reproduced here. This is sing-along, feel-good music from one of America's little-known troubadors. Highly recommended.
An American Origional.......2000-01-28
This will be short and sweet---Jimmy Driftwood is a unique performer and writer. He has no equal. His songs are served up like a feast hot off the bar-b-que grill of Ozark Arkansas/Missouri. The unique sound of his home-made guitar and his picking bow are a delight for any folk music fan. The three CDs in this set capture a large chunk of his even larger song list. Jimmy was the driving force that ignited the folk movement in not only Mountain View, Arkansas, but helped influence the start and spread of other places, including Branson, Missouri and Dollywood. What a loss folk music has suffered at his passing!

Eddi Soars.......2002-07-12
This is really two CDs in one. The first ten tracks are mellow and soothing and should be listened to at about 1 am in the morning.
The (bonus) five live tracks make me wish I was at the Quattro Club in Tokyo for the recording; but since I wasn't this is the next best thing. These tracks fully exploit the tremendous range of Eddi's fabulous voice. They leave the listener believing that Eddi's voice, very much like a loaded 747 on climb-out, has much more power available in reserve for emergencies.
I hadn't heard "Kiteflyers Hill" before (shame on me) but have already added it to my top ten all time best songs.
The disk ends with Eddi asking "What does it take to make you happy?" In my case the answer is, a new disk from Eddi Reader - and this is certainly it!
Tonight I'll again pop it in the CD player, sit back and let Eddi's rich tones wash over me. For the 68 minutes it will take to listen to this CD I'll reflect on the fact that, life, at least, just got a little bit better.

Sibelius wrote a large number of songs, but they are not terribly well known, nor are there very many great ones. Like his piano music, he wrote them primarily for the money. Nevertheless, there are some masterpieces, particularly the lengthy orchestral ballad, "The Rapids- Rider's Brides," which has its own opus number (33), and which directly foreshadows the music of the evocative tone poem Luonnotar. Sibelius and several other composers orchestrated a fair number of his songs, which is a good thing because his piano writing was seldom very effective, his musical ideas being naturally orchestral in nature. This award-winning collection offers 18 orchestral arrangements of Sibelius's finest efforts in the genre, excellently sung by Jorma Hynninen, the great Finnish baritone of his generation. The music is well worth knowing. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Sibelius.......2000-11-17
Many of these songs were not originally written with an orchestral accompaniment in mind. But orchestra brings out new colors in these works, that I hadn't realized before when listening to them with piano accompaniment.
Hynninen sings beautifully throughout, and is in my opinion at his best in these songs. He has a special kind of light high baritone voice, that doesn't always work well in opera, but in Sibelius it works fantastically. Understanding the language and the cultural background of these songs helps as well.

For some reason, cellists--more than any other classical instrumentalists--seem drawn to electronica. Recent CDs by Zoe Keating, Jami Sieber, Hans Christian (Rasa), and Gretchen Yanover find cellists riding electronica atmospheres. Rena Jones is a bit different from most of them. They use electronics to extend their cellos' range and sound. Jones plants her cello next to her laptop in fractalized grooves. Driftwood is an entrancing album that's as much about Jones's translucent laptop compositions as her gifts on cello, guitar, violin, and clarinet. But all those instruments give her music a different feel from many laptop jockeys. Compositions like "Photosynthesis" and "Driftwood" have an almost classical flow, as her strings and clarinet articulate Arvo Pärt-like lines of liquid inevitability while rhythms pulse, shudder, and ping through the melodies. But it's not all airy on Driftwood. "Open Me Slowly" finds her plucking a cello bass line with a funky grit you can't get with a computer sample. Rena Jones's soulful cello lines lend her music a somber tone and soulful beauty, which is all the more striking when cast against her chromium-plated arrangements. The combination makes Driftwood intoxicating. --John Diliberto
Album Description
Driftwood weaves together tuneful electroinca with violin and cello music to a haunting, memorable and beautiful effect. Making enchanted and edgy beat-works to disappear off into. It never tries to be musically difficult, it just slides along smooth as silk, making wonderful chill out music, that will sooth away the days stressers and strains.
Customer Reviews:
Tantalizing Textures, Dreamy Flow, and Chewy Deep Grooves!.......2006-09-13
This journey is one to chew on for sure. Just when I think I have the Rena Jones style pegged, she goes and changes shape again! To be sure, her soaring heart-string melodies can be found here like the previous albums. In Driftwood the strings melt and meld with wind instruments, other-worldly mysterious and emotional electronics soundscapes, and textured crunky intelligent psy-juicy beats. The key word that sets apart Driftwood is refinement. What a clean, beautiful sound! One song transitions into the other to provide a true musical "story."
I am lost and engrossed at the same time while listening. You can put it on, turn the lights down low, meditate, and take off with the tonal swirls floating by. (the sound is like the cd artwork, fractal journeys of drifting earth tones) You can also take a long road trip and let it play over and over. You can dance all night, then bring in the ecstatic new day to these tunes. You can make love to this yummy music!
Thanks Rena for working so hard for this third album, your dedication is obvious and deserves standing ovations and higest accolades!

Customer Reviews:
I discovered Sibelius with this CD.......2001-03-18
I'm a big fan of Mattila and of art song. But Sibelius was mostly unfamiliar to me (except for some of his symphonies) until this disc. I especially liked the final cut, Jubal. The accompaniment here is minimalist with Mahlerian touches. Mattila sings exquisitely throughout. If you like songs by Brahms, Mahler, or Strauss, expand your knowledge horizon with this CD.
Beautiful Voice - Beautiful Music.......2000-11-17
I especially liked the songs "Var det en dröm?" and "Norden", but all of these songs are beautifully sung throughout. Karita Mattila has the perfect voice for these songs. Her voice is soft, yet strong, and the cool color is used well especially in "Norden". It is also clear that she understands every word she is singing.
This record is also a great introduction to Sibelius songs, for those who are not already familiar with them. There are also wonderful recordings of Sibelius songs by Jorma Hynninen, Tom Krause and Anne-Sofie von Otter, that I highly recommend.
