George Orwell's classic tale of totalitarianism, 1984, was the inspiration for a project that David Bowie hoped would further solidify his standing as a rock visionary. Bowie was a natural artist to helm a musical companion to Orwell's allegory, since his own music exhibits an innate alienation. The concept ultimately broke down, but the music didn't. "Rebel Rebel" has become a rock staple, while "Sweet Thing," "Candidate," and the forthright yet experimental title track (Bowie as puppet master) offer additional highlights. Still, despite such benchmarks and its conceptual flaws, Diamond Dogs is best listened to as a thematic collection. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Who is this Guy?.......2007-07-23

This was a replacement cd for my wife. It was one of a very few she brought into our marriage. I've never regretted hearing it. I just have one question...Will the real David Bowie please stand up!!

5 out of 5 stars Bowie's Most Hated?.......2007-05-31

Misrepresented and misunderstood for too long, Bowie outdid himself on this one. Don't pay mind to the detractors, this is right up at the top of the Thin White Duke's oeuvre.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-05-24

This and Aladdin Sane are my 2 favorite Bowie albums, although he has made many good albums. We saw him play in Boston in 1976, and in my opinion he was his best then.

In my opinion he certainly made his mark in music and this album helped him do it. He still is and always will be very good, but back then we thought he was the best in the world.

Especially on this album I love "Big Brother" and "Sweet Thing / Candidate".

4 out of 5 stars A Blast.......2007-02-23

This brings me right back...I loved this in high school. Still do on re-listen. If you like this album, get the 30th anniversary edition (5 stars) ...the second disc is full of fun goodies. Some of my favorite Bowie.

5 out of 5 stars Listened To This In The 70's , It May Explain Things............2006-08-31

I listened to this album (my older brothers) during the 70's, ad nausea. For me it is must own Bowie. I like this album so much that I'm even into Chant of the ever circling skeletal family! I actually think that song's very cool but I may be alone on that one. For me this is Bowie's best. I followed him through the 70's (I remember seeing him on Soul Train doing Golden Years), the pop 80's from Ashes to Ashes to China Girl, even followed him a bit in Tin Machine and later hating Americans or something, lol. This is my all time favorite Bowie, I'm ordering it today so we can get reacquainted. Highly recommended, definitely a top 100 rock album of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Diamond Dogs LP.......2007-07-03

Still have this on album.
My sister won this for me in Seaside Heights NJ on the boardwalk.
David Bowie is simply FAB!!!

3 out of 5 stars Brave New World for Bowie.......2007-06-17

Bowie had waved goodbye to Ziggy Stardust - almost, but on the cover of Diamond Dogs, he still looked like the spiky red haired Bowie that everyone knew but morphing into something else. Diamond Dogs remains Bowie's art album of the period - an ambitious work, and yet somehow it doesn't quite gel or grab you. I wanted it to be grander, but it's more like a dark incomplete chapter into a longer novel, something that David would revisit in the 90s with concept albums like Outside.

Diamond Dogs suffers from being a conceptual piece that can't live up to Ziggy musically but still shows David moving forward musically. To his credit, David stakes out a harder rock turf with the title track. And varies the pace in this musical opera with Sweet Thing and 1984. Rebel Rebel is the standout track here, but it's tacked on like an afterthought - made more remarkable by the fact if I recall - that David played all the instruments himself.

Although somewhat of a failed musical, Diamond Dogs is still a crucial part of Bowie history - literally marking the end of Bowie's early 70s guitar rock sound before he embarked on Young Americans. It doesn't get much play on my Bowie setlist though, along with Lodger - but then again, they don't make artists like David Bowie anymore. So those fascinated with the legend should definitely explore. 3.5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars It's Eternal!.......2007-03-29

I have been listening to David Bowie since 1975 and this stuff never gets old-- especially Diamond Dogs-- very glad to see it gets it's due with a 30th anniversary release. A must for all Bowie fans!

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars-- Bowie at his most theatrical........2006-03-10

After the excesses of his glam era, David Bowie turned his attention to creating a musical based on George Orwell's "1984", but unable to secure the rights to the work, he decided to restructure the material into what ended up being "Diamond Dogs". Still, the pedigree of the material brings it to a significantly different sound then any of Bowie's previous work-- a very much theatrical sound is present throughout the music, and it ends up coaxing some fine performances out of Bowie.

The medley of "Sweet Thing" and "Candidate" is probably the best example of this-- "Sweet Thing" features a romantic piano line that would not be out of place in a stage production and an absolutely stunning lead vocal from Bowie who takes full advantage of his range. His performance is just absolutely staggering, but it has a very theatrical, almost over the top sound to it that reminds you of Freddie Mercury. Likewise, the sing-speak vocal of "We Are the Dead" has the sound of something right out of a stage piece. Mixed in with all this is just some great rock songs-- "Diamond Dogs", "Rebel Rebel" and "Rock & Roll With Me"-- and one piece that traipses at dance music ("1984") to make a pretty well balanced collection.

This edition includes a bonus disc of alternate mixes, unreleased recordings of tracks leftover from the musical, and the superb '03 remake of "Rebel Rebel" as well as a detailed booklet with an extended essay about the recording sessions. It's a worthwhile investment for fans.

I've gone back and forth on how I should rate this one-- it's not quite as powerful as some of his other work, but it has a unique and powerful identity. Call it 4 1/2 stars, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars dark and sweet.......2006-02-28

What a great artist David Bowie was in the 70's he took so many chances - that would seem almost like rock and roll suicide - but somehow he always was on top of the game and way ahead of his contemporaries. 'Diamond dogs' would be his strangest and darkest albums looking to the future like Ziggy but in a way that does not glorify it like the starman did - this is not a pretty future.. There are many great moments on this album - but it is more of a whole than it is pieces - it all fits together. This is one of my new favorites.
