With the encouragement of director Spike Lee, modern-jazz trumpeter-composer Terence Blanchard branched out into films, first as an actor and musician (including work in Do the Right Thing, School Daze, and Mo' Better Blues) then full-time scoring with Jungle Fever and Malcolm X. Lee's good judgment has paid off again with the score to this murder mystery revolving around a mentally ill classical musician (Samuel L. Jackson) and his efforts to unravel the crime. Blanchard's score is a true revelation, a sophisticated musical journey that seamlessly evokes classical flourishes, minimalism, jazz, and postmodernism, yet never succumbs to the mere mechanics of style or technique. From its clever opening (an orchestra tuning up, with the instruments playing snippets of the score's various themes), Blanchard evokes the film's musical foundations and background with largely piano-based compositions that essentially form two subtly distinct halves, taking the listener on a deeply satisfying musical journey from troubling madness to emotional triumph and hope. A gratifying argument that not only is the art of the film score still alive and well, it can often be some of the most rewarding and adventurous work to be found in contemporary music. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Shoddy.......2001-08-03
Really disappointing and shoddy, full of extremely simple soundtrack cliches and unusually disappointing work on the part of T. Blanchard. When the lead character of this movie was supposed to have been some "genius pianist", too, you'd think they might put in at least a decent effort to get someone who could do something above a professional C- level. If you absolutely *must* have this for some weird reason, I'm sure there will be used copies aplenty soon enough.
Good Movie Score.......2001-03-18
I must admit, I have not seen this movie yet, but the soundtrack is good. I saw the trailer for this movie and was caught by the music. I began to search the web and found out that the music used in the trailer is actually part of the soundtrack(something that is not very common, for example: the "Pearl Harbor" trailer uses music from "The Thin Red Line" and both the "Seven Years in Tibet" and "Patch Adams" trailers use music from "Dragonheart"). Overall, the score for "The Caveman's Valentine" is good. It's haunting at times but for the most part it has a "jazzy" feeling. I would recomend it for those who collect movie scores in general.

Customer Reviews:
DITTO!!!.......2002-09-05
... I too, saw alot of these bands back in the terrible 80's. New Wave was big and hair bands were on the rise. These Voxx artists were a very cool lternative to the junk we were being force fed from radio and popular culture. I also agree that The Things were by far one of the better bands on that label. They all knew how to play their instruments and their songs were just better than most. I recently heard 'Outside My Window' (The Things second record) again after 15 years and I am still blown away by it. Voxx, when are you going to release it on CD? I guess I'll have to settle for only one song here. Please, Please, Please release both Things records on CD. I also heard that there was a 3rd Things record on the now infamous Epitaph label. I am curious about it also. Anyhow, I give this 4 stars for The Things!!!!
I WAS THERE, I SAW MOST OF THESE BANDS!!.......2001-07-31
I was lucky enough to be wandering the streets of L.A. / Hollywood in the mid 1980's when New Wave and MTV were hitting it's peak. But back in the alleys in some of the dirtiest clubs around there was this great sound vibrating off the old brick walls. Grunge was happening long before Nirvana and Pearl Jam, however, most of these bands didn't have the big budgets or the luxury of state of the art recording studio's to get their live sound across on record. Most of these recordings were literally recorded in garages. I had to give this record 5 stars just for the fact that I can finally hear The Things on CD. Even if only for 1 song. Their records have been long out of print, but The Things were an amazing live band in the vien of the Buffalo Springfield. They were grunge/pop before grunge was cool. Thanks Voxx for this compilation.
DEFINITIVE COLLECTION.......2000-09-05
Leave it to Greg and Suzy Shaw at Voxx to compile the best Garage compilation ever! This collection is both a fabulous introduction to the genre and a must have for enthusiasts alike. As many of these tracks are heard for the first time on CD, this is a welcome addition to my collection! Cavestomp NOW, I say!!

Product Description
Next level raw hip hop that stands alone in today's music world.
Sometimes you have to take a step back to move forward. Sometimes you get so tired of searching for the right sound that you have to create it yourself. This is Caveman Theory: three emcees (Redd Simpkins, Godamus Rhyme, and Kap) and one DJ (Dolo) who aren't trying to break the mold so much as force evolution on a culture that has become focused on following formulae. With a combination of quick wit, imaginative concepts, and intelligent lyrics, Caveman Theory hopes to change the image of hip-hop just being rap music. Leading by example, these four are proof that great musical talent cannot be over looked when discovered through the right medium.
