Editorial Reviews Michael Northam "Both Stern and Northam work with lo-tech phonics: field recordings, found objects, contact mics, tape loops, etc. As with much music in this area, it comes down to the creators' choices in what's included, what's not, how much stress is placed on this or that element and, perhaps crucially, how to balance an economy of means with an abundance of outcome. When successful, the individual elements become invisible and the listener is confronted with a soundscape that's immediately accepted as "real", as something that bubbles along with its own life and pace, revealing as much or as little as the listener chooses to hear. The five tracks of "wormwood" accomplish this with deceptive ease, each offering a slightly different angle, each transparent as to its means, each unforced in its direction. Sometimes, as on the third piece, the balance tilts toward more a "musical" concoction (in this case, high-pitched, organ-like drones over a rustling underbelly) but more often the sounds are entirely a-musical, deriving from manipulated found elements. Among other things, this introduces an impressive airy quality, even as that air is tinged with ozone and gasoline. Throughout, it's never less than absorbing, thoughtful and ear-tickling." Wormwood, Music, Michael Northam & Joel Stern
About the Artist
Joel Stern
Joel is a sound artist exploring electroacoustic approaches to composed and freely improvised music. He performs using field recordings, contact microphones, found objects, digital processing techniques and simple feedback systems, producing works which move between richly textural surface noise, investigations of acoustic space, and minute gestural detail. Joel has performed and produced work for galleries, theatres, pubs, and squatted indian restaurants throughout Australia and Europe and has released music on labels including Impermanent, TwoThousandAnd, Touch, Groundfault and Paradisc. He has collaborated with many artists including Anthony Guerra, Matt Davis, Paul Hood, Oren Ambarchi, Phil Samartzis, Jim Denley, Rhodri Davies, Robbie Avanaim, Tony Buck and Mattin.
A self proclaimed sound 'composter', Michael's works to redirecting the experience, observation, and discovery of unique organic and inorganically driven sound phenomena towards their open ended application in what he calls 'intuitive assemblage'. Recordings of forgotten places to the midst of massive demonstrations, the manipulation of discarded objects to the articulate drones of harmonic wires of traditional instruments, his sound work spans the chasms between tonal and atonal musics and acknowledges neither in order to create a suspended space of viewing our condition embedded in stochastic fields of constant change. He has presented sound works extensively throughout Europe and North America and has over the past 12 years scattered published works produced from four continents. He is currently helping to develop studio facilities and record label concerning new sound works, sound sculpture and the documentation of sound phenomena in western Switzerland.
Album Description
The five wormwood pieces are taken from a single recording session which happened late at night, in a loungeroom borrowed from friends, at petticoat lane, east london, on dec29th 2002. michael had only just arrived fresh/weary from his explorations in malta, joel was preparing to leave london after 3 years and return home to australia. the music, in all its abstraction, reflects this transitory moment of shared sensibility and open exchange between two people heading in opposite directions.

Arguably the most disturbing of the Residents' numerous darkly amusing albums, Wormwood consists of 18 songs (bookended by the instrumentals "In the Beginning" and "Revelation") sung by the protagonists of Old Testament tales, featuring the Israelite god Yahweh in a capricious and vengeful mood. "Bleeding is better than breathing to God," complains the daughter of Jephthah in "Burn Baby Burn," a sentiment echoed by Abraham (whom God commands to sacrifice his son to prove his faith) in "Kill Him!" Lot sleeps with his daughters, Salome gets a head, Onan spills his seed, and a mysterious disconnected finger appears in increasingly outlandish tales conveyed by means of theatrical vocals and melodramatically overwrought keyboards. Don't believe their veracity? "Look it up!" suggest the Residents, who conveniently provide chapter and verse for each and every story. --Richard GehrCustomer Reviews:
The Residents Return With a Vengence.......2001-08-03
Unlike the less polished "Roadworms" that followed this recording, this CD is packed with pop songs, experimental music, and the weird stuff we all want the residents to make noise about.
There's no doubt that the lyrics, and especially the liner notes of this recording will offend a number of people (like it did me a few times), and if you have extremely strong beliefs that are aligned with the Bible, this album is not for you. However, the music is the stongest the Residents have performed in years, and is not to be ignored by us hardened veterans of the One Eyed Whozits.
From the amazing (but too short) instrumental that opens the album, to the equally amazing, but more disturbing instrumental that ends this CD, this album is packed with pop songs such as "Burn Baby Burn" to the strong pathos of "Firefall".
The Residents have returned from the hades of soundtracks, and are in front of us with all their glory.

Compares to Superstar? Give me a break........2001-05-22
Honestly, I didn't agree when certain people thought Jesus Christ Superstar was a mocking of the Holy Bible, but I can certaintly understand the arguement that this album isis. "Judas saves"????? I could hardly write that.
Stick with Superstar.

Album Description
Like the Resident's 1988 CD 'God in Three Persons', which is formally an opera of the new narrative type with lots of rhythmic speaking and chorus responses somewhat in the style of the classic Southern talking blues, this wonderful new piece in 20 parts is also a commentary on the more bizarre imagery and smarmy, truly uneasy emotions from the Bible. While being full of irony and postmodernism, it also reaches for that deep kind of soul-shaking experience that is the true wellspring of religious awe before the lawgivers arrive in town. Originally released in 1998. Euroralph/Germany. 2005.

Wormwood is amazing........2002-01-12
Something is different about the guys in this band from the average Christian metalcore band though. It becomes apparent when you read their lyrics that they are growing tired of the complacency amongst Christians and Christian bands these day. 'The Latest Fad' lays it on the line for other bands, challenging them with;
Christ becomes a trend rather than a thirst
talk the talk but can't walk the walk
it's all a spit and polish veneer
The song 'No Apology' is lyrically a song I personally have been waiting for a band to write for a long time now. Simply put it states I'll respect you freedom of speech but you have to respect mine as well. I could go on dissecting their lyrics but I don't think I need to. Each song on this disc is unashamedly Christian, well thought out and very poignant.
In addition to the instrumental on other song stands out musically and that's the closing/title track 'Wormwood.' Bottom line here is it's an emo song. Immensely passionate lyrics are sung, in a not quite so nasally approach with extremely melodic music. It's a good song and a great CD closer as it brings you back down after the frenzy of the other 12 tracks. It's kind of like the band is offering you a band-aid for the wound they gave your neck after ripping your head off.
Lister's bottom line here is this is a superb album that picked up where 'Regeneration of Self' left off. It shows a great deal of growth for the band and if you liked their previous album you are not a complete human without owning a copy of 'Wormwood.'
