About the Artist
Joel Stern
Joel is a sound artist exploring electroacoustic approaches to composed and freely improvised music. He performs using field recordings, contact microphones, found objects, digital processing techniques and simple feedback systems, producing works which move between richly textural surface noise, investigations of acoustic space, and minute gestural detail. Joel has performed and produced work for galleries, theatres, pubs, and squatted indian restaurants throughout Australia and Europe and has released music on labels including Impermanent, TwoThousandAnd, Touch, Groundfault and Paradisc. He has collaborated with many artists including Anthony Guerra, Matt Davis, Paul Hood, Oren Ambarchi, Phil Samartzis, Jim Denley, Rhodri Davies, Robbie Avanaim, Tony Buck and Mattin.

Michael Northam
A self proclaimed sound 'composter', Michael's works to redirecting the experience, observation, and discovery of unique organic and inorganically driven sound phenomena towards their open ended application in what he calls 'intuitive assemblage'. Recordings of forgotten places to the midst of massive demonstrations, the manipulation of discarded objects to the articulate drones of harmonic wires of traditional instruments, his sound work spans the chasms between tonal and atonal musics and acknowledges neither in order to create a suspended space of viewing our condition embedded in stochastic fields of constant change. He has presented sound works extensively throughout Europe and North America and has over the past 12 years scattered published works produced from four continents. He is currently helping to develop studio facilities and record label concerning new sound works, sound sculpture and the documentation of sound phenomena in western Switzerland.

Album Description
The five wormwood pieces are taken from a single recording session which happened late at night, in a loungeroom borrowed from friends, at petticoat lane, east london, on dec29th 2002. michael had only just arrived fresh/weary from his explorations in malta, joel was preparing to leave london after 3 years and return home to australia. the music, in all its abstraction, reflects this transitory moment of shared sensibility and open exchange between two people heading in opposite directions.

"Both Stern and Northam work with lo-tech phonics: field recordings, found objects, contact mics, tape loops, etc. As with much music in this area, it comes down to the creators' choices in what's included, what's not, how much stress is placed on this or that element and, perhaps crucially, how to balance an economy of means with an abundance of outcome. When successful, the individual elements become invisible and the listener is confronted with a soundscape that's immediately accepted as "real", as something that bubbles along with its own life and pace, revealing as much or as little as the listener chooses to hear. The five tracks of "wormwood" accomplish this with deceptive ease, each offering a slightly different angle, each transparent as to its means, each unforced in its direction. Sometimes, as on the third piece, the balance tilts toward more a "musical" concoction (in this case, high-pitched, organ-like drones over a rustling underbelly) but more often the sounds are entirely a-musical, deriving from manipulated found elements. Among other things, this introduces an impressive airy quality, even as that air is tinged with ozone and gasoline. Throughout, it's never less than absorbing, thoughtful and ear-tickling." 5 out of 5 stars MOE for the masses.......2006-09-12

I was turned on to this by a younger friend. My appreciation was swift, about half way through. As a slightly aging rocker that misses the days of killer albums coming out every several weeks instead of years this was very refreshing. This cd has given me some faith that real creative rock is still alive, thanks moe.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best jam-band studio albums ever.......2005-06-21

Wormwood deserves the recognition received for its excellence at the Jammys. This album is experimental in nature with influences ranging from the Dead to Steely Dan to the Allman Brothers to Jeff Beck. These elements have been drawn upon as inspiration, not used for replication.
As always the instrumental work is superb from Moe, but the album's ambiance is strengthened with innovative recording techniques. The drum tracks were recorded live and the rest of the tracks were recorded in a studio.
The guitar solos are what set Moe. apart from other jam bands. This album in particular contains amazing solos. These solos move beyond the Garcia recipe of jamming upon three simple chords moving in a predictable progression. Wormwood's solos are woven throughout complicated melodies with care. (Okay Alright is the one counter-example of my previous statement, but the song kicks ass anyway.) There are no awkward breaks for solos that are drawn out. I am a Moe.ron and love the pleasure of hearing a constant jam (Warts 1,2,3,4), but at times Moe. is guilty of sacrificing progression for a ripping solo, dragging songs on to 20 minutes. The solos on this album vary in length, but are perfect in length for achieving the effect that they were intended for.
Being a fan of jambands(GD, Allmans, Umphrey's Mcgee, SCI, Particle, Phish, Ratdog...), I admit I am partial to Moe. However, any fan of quality music will be able to appreciate the talent that was required to create this album even if they are not fans of jambands.
If you have purchased this album and love it, share it with a friend. The more people are exposed to good music, the more people will realize what they have been missing while listening to their radios.

Peace

I like Regeneration of Self better but this is still a solid release. They are now a hardcore band, but before they were metalcore. This is definately a must for hardcore kids. I mean this is REAL hardcore. Bands like Minor Threat and Black Flag are NOT hardcore, they're straitedge!!! Few Left Standing is probably the BEST hardcore band on the planet! No joke, so you better get this CD if you know what's good for you. These guys would make Hatebreed hide under there beds.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good Christiancore.......2007-07-10

I found this CD used. It cost a dollar. I had no idea what it was, but the packaging seemed to indicate that it was my type of music so at that price I gave it a try. It only took a few seconds into the recording to realize I'd been lucky enough to stumble onto a hardcore album with a solid vocalist. The longer I listened, the clearer it became what a bargain I'd found. It took me much, much longer -- more than half way through the CD, in fact -- before an odd vocal line caught my attention and it started to dawn on me that these folks might be some variant of Christian rock. Granted, I tend to ignore lyrics and listen to the sounds, but I still think I would have caught on a lot faster if the music hadn't been so serious that I wasn't asking questions. The CD isn't dull Christian propaganda sweetened with weak popular music so the kids will swallow it; it's powerful music that happens to have an "uplifting" message. The band is no Vision of Disorder or Living Sacrifice, but they are significantly better than typical hardcore.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME CD!.......2006-07-13

If anyone out there REALLY likes HEAVY HEAVY metal then get this CD. In fact get all of these guys Cd's. Its just awesome. The guitars lay down such a heavy rift its almost hard to believe, the drums are just crazy and the singing (or should i say Screaming) is just great, and to all the parents out there if your kids like this kind of music and your looking for something with a good message.......buy this CD. It has a very powerful and uplifting message that anyone can enjoy.

This cd is an excellent buy.Fewleftstanding is by far one of the best hardcore Christian bands out there. They are great even for non-Christians.They are a good band for anyone who likes extreme music, hard and heavy guitars, awesome drums, and a singer that has an absolutely crazy scream.GO OUT AND BUY IT!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars FLS!!!.......2003-02-13

AAaahhh, what? why is this CD so low in rating? This cd rocks plain and simple if u dont like hardcore i mean really really hardcore DONT LOOK AT THIS... if u do THEN LOOK HERE THIS BAND ROCKS! I just bought this cd for 7 bucks on a sale rack and it rocks. It would be worth full price to pay it. They have sweet vocals, hard, loud music, and a positive message. If you are a hardcore fan, this CD is a must. Wormwood is a great c.d. I wouldn't recommend getting it if you are not completely into exremly hard core music cause thats what fewleftstanding is all about. It does have a great message and the vocals arent bad either. So if you're really into the hardcore stuff, I recommend picking up a copy. The message is totally uplifting to God. There's nothing else to it. Buy this CD it rocks!

Arguably the most disturbing of the Residents' numerous darkly amusing albums, Wormwood consists of 18 songs (bookended by the instrumentals "In the Beginning" and "Revelation") sung by the protagonists of Old Testament tales, featuring the Israelite god Yahweh in a capricious and vengeful mood. "Bleeding is better than breathing to God," complains the daughter of Jephthah in "Burn Baby Burn," a sentiment echoed by Abraham (whom God commands to sacrifice his son to prove his faith) in "Kill Him!" Lot sleeps with his daughters, Salome gets a head, Onan spills his seed, and a mysterious disconnected finger appears in increasingly outlandish tales conveyed by means of theatrical vocals and melodramatically overwrought keyboards. Don't believe their veracity? "Look it up!" suggest the Residents, who conveniently provide chapter and verse for each and every story. --Richard Gehr

5 out of 5 stars The Residents Return With a Vengence.......2001-08-03

After a few years of writing CD-ROM, and educational television soundtracks the Residents returned to songwriting and being a stage act with this CD, and the tour that followed it.

Unlike the less polished "Roadworms" that followed this recording, this CD is packed with pop songs, experimental music, and the weird stuff we all want the residents to make noise about.

There's no doubt that the lyrics, and especially the liner notes of this recording will offend a number of people (like it did me a few times), and if you have extremely strong beliefs that are aligned with the Bible, this album is not for you. However, the music is the stongest the Residents have performed in years, and is not to be ignored by us hardened veterans of the One Eyed Whozits.

From the amazing (but too short) instrumental that opens the album, to the equally amazing, but more disturbing instrumental that ends this CD, this album is packed with pop songs such as "Burn Baby Burn" to the strong pathos of "Firefall".

The Residents have returned from the hades of soundtracks, and are in front of us with all their glory.

5 out of 5 stars Not fun at first..........2001-07-04

This album, most likely, will disappoint you. The music doesn't strike me as weird by The Residents' standards. It's almost kind of lame. It's a concept album with probably the most clear concept but the purpose is unclear. Does this album stink? NO WAY! It's a triumph! With developed songs, a great insert, and 61 minutes of music, this might be the best Residents album out there. I know it doesn't compare to older Residents albums but definately deserves as much credit as Freak Show - which is one of Their finest. VERY ESSENTIAL!

3 out of 5 stars The Residents Needed More.......2001-07-02

This album provides you with an all Residential view of the bible, some of the story are twisted to their point-of-view, but others do totally follow logic, like "Judas Saves." The music is techno-era, and other than the voice of Lot and a couple of others, the vocals are good too, but this in noway compares to older, better Rez albums.

2 out of 5 stars Compares to Superstar? Give me a break........2001-05-22

Uh, no. I've heard that comparison a few times, and every time I do, it sounds crazier and crazier. This...unusual album, which, I'll admit, has decent rock and roll music and some clever refrences (the reason for my two star gift) does not even fall into the same category as the masterpiece: Andrew Lloyd Webber's/Tim Rice's JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. The music is better in JCS, the religious messages are more accurate (the lyrics are much better), and the performance is a heck of a lot more wonderful. So for everyone who says that this album is "everything Superstar wanted to be", I gotta say, that isn't right. It really doesn't compare.

Honestly, I didn't agree when certain people thought Jesus Christ Superstar was a mocking of the Holy Bible, but I can certaintly understand the arguement that this album isis. "Judas saves"????? I could hardly write that.

Stick with Superstar.

2 out of 5 stars lacks the vitality of their early work.......2001-03-31

Interesting idea for an album, i.e to show that the Bible isn't all love and sweetness, but that there is a huge amount of cruelty and evil and darkness in it too. The songs aren't particularly memorable though, and the silly voice thing doesn't really work with such 'serious' subject matter. The music sounds like it was written for a computer game. There are some nice instrumental tunes but they don't redeem the album. Check out their early stuff for some real wacky music, especially commercial album. Thank you

            Album Description

Like the Resident's 1988 CD 'God in Three Persons', which is formally an opera of the new narrative type with lots of rhythmic speaking and chorus responses somewhat in the style of the classic Southern talking blues, this wonderful new piece in 20 parts is also a commentary on the more bizarre imagery and smarmy, truly uneasy emotions from the Bible. While being full of irony and postmodernism, it also reaches for that deep kind of soul-shaking experience that is the true wellspring of religious awe before the lawgivers arrive in town. 5 out of 5 stars Wormwood is amazing........2002-01-12

Looking for more a more melodic and more metal FewLeftStanding than what you got on their debut album 'Regeneration of Self?' Well if you are look no further than their new release on Takehold Records entitled 'Wormwood' and you will find exactly what you need.
The new album is, as mentioned filled with melody and metal blended with superb attention to detail. These guys have seriously matured both musically and lyrically in the year and a half or so since their first album came out. The 50 minutes of mayhem are encompassed in 13 tracks with one being a short instrumental song called '10,000 Angry Hardcore Kids.' Filled with interesting metalcore styled leads, and Chris' polished vocal style as the main vocals from the first album this disc gets better with each listen. In addition we are treated to a few gang vocals, 'Give Credit Where Credit Is Due' is half spoken not even sung, singing style lyrics all keep you deep into the music presented here.

            Something is different about the guys in this band from the average Christian metalcore band though. It becomes apparent when you read their lyrics that they are growing tired of the complacency amongst Christians and Christian bands these day. 'The Latest Fad' lays it on the line for other bands, challenging them with;

Christ becomes a trend rather than a thirst
talk the talk but can't walk the walk
it's all a spit and polish veneer

The song 'No Apology' is lyrically a song I personally have been waiting for a band to write for a long time now. Simply put it states I'll respect you freedom of speech but you have to respect mine as well. I could go on dissecting their lyrics but I don't think I need to. Each song on this disc is unashamedly Christian, well thought out and very poignant.

In addition to the instrumental on other song stands out musically and that's the closing/title track 'Wormwood.' Bottom line here is it's an emo song. Immensely passionate lyrics are sung, in a not quite so nasally approach with extremely melodic music. It's a good song and a great CD closer as it brings you back down after the frenzy of the other 12 tracks. It's kind of like the band is offering you a band-aid for the wound they gave your neck after ripping your head off.

Lister's bottom line here is this is a superb album that picked up where 'Regeneration of Self' left off. It shows a great deal of growth for the band and if you liked their previous album you are not a complete human without owning a copy of 'Wormwood.'
