Having sung before royalty and performed with the Irish super-group Celtic Woman, Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, and Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel, the very young and remarkably beautiful singer is back with a tribute to her Celtic ancestry. As with her previous Platinum-selling releases (she is already a huge star in her native New Zealand, Japan, Australia, and the UK), the orchestrations are lush, with sighing phalanxes of strings and woodwinds. But in keeping with the avowed theme, there are also soft touches of soulful, wavering tin whistles and vaguely fiddle-like violin vamps. The program is more varied than the album's title might lead one to expect, encompassing everything from "The Last Rose Of Summer" and "Danny Boy" to "Shenandoah," "Scarborough Fair," "Abide With Me," and even a couple of more pop-oriented songs penned by Westenra herself. However, brief sideways winks toward Nashville or the Great White Way do not adulterate the album's overall mood of ethereal, remote bliss. The one misstep is an English-language cover of "Un Bel Di" ("One Fine Day") from Puccini's Madama Butterfly: an aria unsuited to the artist's fragile, bell-like soprano and placid temperament. This aside, established classical crossover/theatrical divas like Sarah Brightman would be wise to begin looking to their laurels. --Christina Roden

Hayley's third solo album is a very personal collection of classical arias, Irish and Maori folk songs - representing treasured people and places on her remarkable musical journey. Recorded in Dublin, Ireland, Hayley's third solo album is a very personal collection of classical arias, Irish and Maori folk songs - representing treasured people and places in her remarkable musical journey. For the first time the album also includes several original tracks written by Hayley herself. Celtic Treasure is a celebration of Hayley's family roots, and her grandparent's journey across the World on the first boat that left Ireland for New Zealand in the 1880s - taking with them a rich musical heritage. Her grandmother - a singer, and her grandfather, who played the accordion, were to be important influences on Hayley's musical development. Hayley grew up hearing her grandmother singing Italian opera arias in English. Hayley has continued this tradition by recording the well-known aria One Fine Day... ('Un bel di) from Puccini's Madama Butterfly. Hayley's grandmother also sang Irish folk tunes, and Hayley includes one of them - Danny Boy on the album as a tribute to her. Another Irish folk tune Sonny, is the first recording in which Hayley accompanies herself on the piano. In the same vein as Hayley's signature song Pokarekare Ana from her debut album Pure, Hayley's deep sense of pride as a New Zealander, and the simple beauty of her voice come together in E Para Ra - a Maori lovesong reflecting her own love of her homeland. Hayley's first recordings of her own songs bring together all these musical influences. They include her compositions Let Me Lie and Summer Rain and her lyrics to a haunting lute song by the Elizabethan English composer John Dowland, called simply Melancholy Interlude.

Disappointing.......2007-07-13
We first encountered Westenra as a member of the Celtic Woman group. She was great -- as were all the girls. Based on that, I selected this CD after reading the reviews on Amazon. This one seemed to get the best overall reviews.
This CD is pretty uninspired and Westenra's voice sounds just average on several of the tracks. There are a few impressive spots but generally I thought the CD was less than expected.

Hayley does a great job with this cd. Its relaxing and interesting, instead of boring like some opera kind of vocalists can be. I recommend her cd, Pure, as well. She will definitely impress and soothe you!

If you could hear the angels singing this is exactly what they would sound like. Please do yourself a favor and get the dvd too. They are both beyond amazing.

This album of Celtic standards is truly one of the most beautiful I've heard in a long time. For a girl of 19 to have this kind of vocal maturity is amazing... she gets better with each new recording.
Hayley has a clear, and pure voice that makes these familiar songs sound brand new. Though the whole album is a treat, the two hymns are inspiring. Others have done this repitoire, and done it well; none has done it better.
Hayley has a new recording of "West Side Story" due out soon; I can't wait. In the meantime, do not fail to grab this one.

Love the beautiful voice that I have come to expect from the Celtic Women lasses and the eclectic choice of songs really accentuates her range and flexibility to sing classic and contemporary. She shines with every choice. I await her next CD.

Worth the wait...........2007-07-20
"All Things End" was the first song I had heard from David's works. That song has been like a mental refuge for me. It just totally relaxes and calms me. I was excited to find out that he finally had a new album out.
I think it is very good. The first 2 tracks are just plain good. Next, I like tracks 8, 9, and 10. I like how track 10 starts out very dark and mysterious. The rest are good, but nothing really ground breaking.
My only beefs about the album is that track 1 ends too abruptly. It starts taking off after the "bridge?" then just stops. Is track 2 a continuation? Also, some of it sounds a little too much like Patrick O'Hearn with the familiar keyboard patch that he uses alot. I would liked to have heard something more innovative for the lead instrument. I think they should have had David Darling with his haunting cello join them too.
I fully recommend this album. This has been in my changer since I bought it on 6/13. I listen to it at some point every day.
Worthy of the title.......2007-06-22
Two stellar talents come together to build off and enhance one another's strengths resulting in an album worthy of the title. From the bold and powerful to the serene and ethereal, I've been listening to this daily for weeks.
Bike-Ride-Soundtrack!.......2007-06-13
Treasure has come along at just the right time to start my summer off right! When I ride my recumbent bike on the rural forested rail trails of central Ohio, I like to have peaceful relaxing music emanating from my cargo trailer. This is made possible and skip free by the use of my iPod boom box style player. (I never wear headphones while riding the bike. Not only is it unsafe, it covers up the lovely sounds of the birds, waterfalls and rustling leaves.) When quietly pedaling along side the streams snaking through the beautiful hills and valleys filled with lush tall trees, hearing this music is a perfect compliment to the visual experience of my isolated bicycle touring. It makes me feel as if I'm in my own movie with my own personal soundtrack accompanying my journey.
It's impossible to say what track is my favorite as they ALL are so good. If you like Helpling's "Sleeping on the Edge of the World," and Jenkins's "Beyond City Light" (another favorite bike-ride-soundtrack for me), then it's a no brainer that you'll absolutely LOVE "Treasure." You can't go wrong with this one. Even listeners new to this kind of genre should be able to appreciate this wonderful CD.
Nice album from the new age masters!.......2007-06-13
David Helpling and Jon Jenkins' new album 'Treasure' is just that... a new age treasure! Unlike many new age albums that tend to drone on and on for 60-70 minutes, David and Jon really develop some great musical styles throughout some of the individual tracks. There is certainly a lot of energy in these tracks, which should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with their work. David has been involved with film scoring for quite a few years and both David and Jon have written some fantastic new age albums. Anyone who enjoys instrumental music with a lot of rhythm and percussion will enjoy 'Treasure'. Definitely recommend !!
Meeting Expectations.......2007-06-13
I recently received my copy of Treasure and have been listening to it ever since. My favorite track at the moment is: Not a Soul, Not a Sound. The seemless and sweeping pads are absolutely mind blowing! If you know anything at all about creating this kind of music, you know how much talent and work is involved in creating such luscious ambience. I didn't honestly believe that they could beat "Flow", or "Sleeping on the Edge of the World", but they managed to do it. This cd has gone way beyond and above my expectations.
My thoughts are constantly lost in the spacious depth that Treasure paints in the minds eye. My hat is off to you gentlemen. This cd is as of now one of my all time favorite pieces of music. Congratualtions on a job very well done!

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Not exactly the most seamless adaptation ever attempted, this animated version of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic swashbuckler (now set in outer space, even if the "ships" appear inexplicably unchanged since the 18th century) at least benefited from Disney's always high production standards. Those factors also insure that James Newton Howard's orchestral score is serviceably effervescent and retro enough for the film's storytelling gambit--if still a long way from the heights of Korngold's triumphant, genre-defining music for The Sea Hawk and other Errol Flynn swashbucklers; call it Captain Blood-lite. The studio's marketing-driven desire to have it both ways has also awkwardly sandwiched in a couple otherwise pleasant John Rzeznik-penned modern rock tracks, "I'm Still Here," performed by the Goo Goo Dolls singer himself, and BBMak's slightly funkier take of "Always Know Where You Are." --Jerry McCulley

A Fantastic Score For A Great Movie.......2007-06-16
Definitely one of the--if not the--most underrated Disney movies ever. Of course, such an original concept got swept up in the intent to maximize the market-ability of the movie. Admittedly though, "Treasure Island" in space is hard to pull off, but this movie does, in part to the great score behind it. To balance a traditional 'swashbuckling' genre score with sci-fi twists can be no easy task, but its managed greatly in this soundtrack. A definite must for anyone who liked the movie and a great suggestion for anyone else.

2. Always Know Where You Are (BBMak): Um, ok, why did they put this song on the soundtrack again? 2 stars.
3. 12 Years Later: Kind of a quiet song, one I would listen to while writing. 4 stars.
4. To the Spaceport: Awesome! Kind of sounds like one of the songs from the movie "Dinosaur". (No surprise there, because James Newton Howard did the scores for both movies.) 4 stars
5. Rooftop: Wow. This song is beautiful, and it is most definately a song that I would listen to at night to lull me to sleep. 5 stars.
6. Billy Bones: Way to switch me from "lull me to sleep." to "creeping out!" 4 stars.
7. The Map: Yay for the Chronicles of Narnia people who put the first part of this song on their movie trailer! This song is DA BOMB! 5 stars.
8. Silver: Rock on all you Newfies out there! (A Newfie being slang for a Newfoundlander, or somebody that was born on Newfoundland.) This song goes out to you and smacks of the seas and the east coast. It totally fits Silver who must be either Newfie or part Newfie. (I'm sure he is, but don't bet on it.) 5 stars.
9. The Launch: Hmm. I'm not so keen on this song, but it's probably just me. 3 stars.
10.James Newton Howard really shines in one of his best musical pieces. Wow, I think this song sums up Silver and Jim's father/son pretty well. 5 stars.
11. Jim chases Morph: Meh on this song too. I love Morph though. He practically steals the movie. 3 stars.
12. Ben: Um, yeah. I don't really like this song too much. 2 stars.

15. The Portal: This song reminds me of in the movies when the main character tampers with something too deadly for them (like magic), and it ends up morphing them or attacking them. Sort of a "I messed up with something beyond my control, and now I'm paying for it." kind of tune. 4 stars.
16. Jim Saves the Crew: W00t! Mega freaky action music! And more of the same "Playing with fire" feelings that we got from The Portal. 5 stars.
17. Silver Leaves: Nice, soft, heart-touching music to finish up an excellent CD and movie. 4 stars.

I love this movie, first of all. some of my friends didn't like it, but oh well they have their opinions. this movie rocks!!!! i love the soundtrack. Especially "I'm still here." Now my little brother loves this movie, that makes 2. :-) i want this cd!!!

(ok a little more then a few) I broke down and tryed to find the cd to one of my favorite movies. And now its on its was here and im very happy. For the reviews I read that have not seen the movie I highly recomend seeing it. I think having a none love story film was a good idea. This deals more with becoming an adult and taking resposibility then getting the girl. I like this film and I like the music. Buy it you wont regrat it!
Always Know Where You Are.......2006-07-11
All right, I'm not really under 13 (I'm 18), but it's so much easier doing this than signing up and yada yada. Anyway, I loved this movie so much. I was hooked on "I'm Still Here" for like a year. But, now I love "Always Know Where You Are". But, what irritated me so much was that I wanted to version that is on at the end of the movie that's sung by John Rzeznik, not BBMak. I just think they make the song way too pop-ish, where are John Rzeznik has the grunge sound of the Goo Goo Dolls. So, I looked around LimeWire for what felt like forever trying to find the right version. But, I finally did find it. So, my only disappointment was that it's the BBMak version and not John Rzeznik. I think his voice is simply beautiful and there's no reason why they couldn't put that version AND BBMak's on the soundtrack.
But, oh well. I guess that's what happens when this movie is considered Disney's worst movie ever. But I think they're wrong! This movie was wonderful for children, teens, and adults like. Sure, it didn't have the traditional love story like most other Disney movies, but I like how it veered away from that. Anyway, I'm getting off topic. I love the music to this movie and I was suprised to find it was James Horner that composed it. I just thought, "Isn't that the guy who did Titanic?" So, I was glad that he made his music sound different and not as intense as Titanic's was. In my opinion, Titanic's music was a bit violent, but hey. It wasn't a kid movie like Treasure Planet it. But, there you have it. A great movie and a great soundtrack!

The perfect rainy day album.......2007-06-03
I am a relatively new fan of Cocteau Twins. It wasn't until a few years ago when the band started to remaster and re-release its albums did I get around to checking out their music. "Treasure" was the first Cocteau Twins album I bought. I was immediately hooked on the album's intoxicating ethereal melodies and fragile female vocals of Elizabeth Fraser. There definitely is a post punk edge through out the album that is reminiscent of Siouxsie & The Banshees like on "Persephone". The jagged guitar riffs and Elizabeth's wailing sounded an awfully a lot like Siouxsie & The Banshees and I mean that as a compliment. One of my personal favorite songs is the wistful sounds of "Pandora for Cindy". The song is so light and airy. If clouds could emit a sound or make music, I think this is how they would sound like. My very favorite track on the album has to be "Donimo" based on the gorgeous melodies. Elizbeth Fraser has one of the most original vocals I have ever heard. I like that she uses her vocals as an actual instrument. It really shows through on this album especially on the tracks that are more about vocalizations than lyrics. There is not one single track on "Treasure" I did not like. Every song is great. I feel like I am being transported to another dimension when I listen to this gem of an album. "Treasure" is truly a treasure worth owning.
Mysterious Skin soundtrack.......2006-12-14
For those of you who don't know this, the guitarist for Cocteau Twins collaborated with Harold Budd on the soundtrack to Mysterious Skin, which you can preview on Amazon. You might like it, I'm getting it, I think.
Not as good as their early work.......2006-10-31
I got into the Cocteaus through 'Garlands' and 'Lullabies', which are truly great albums reminiscent of early post-punk bands, but having so much more haunting power. I picked up their later work, and god! It's awful. It's like New Age music in New Wave packaging. It loses so much of the raw, jittery beauty that 'Garlands' had. It's a completely different band, and not one I want anything to do with. If you're into calm armchair music, I guess you'll like this, but for people looking for something exciting, skip this.

This is the first Cocteau Twins CD I bought.It started my journey into the sublime,and into true music enlightenment..What can I say but....experience it yourself!!!!

Don't believe anybody who think Cocteau Twins is Enya-wannabe or something. This is 1984 and the band is true originals. There is very small Siouxie & The Banshees flavour in some of their songs, but meanwhile this is post-punk era and music is very hypnotic. Somtimes this style called dream-pop. The sound cool and icy and absolute amazing. When I hear Liz F. I feel like snowflake in the center of snow-blast. When I hear song called Lorelei tears goes down from my eyes I just don't know why. Listening to this album is good for you karma!

Great for yoga and/or meditation. The only thing I'd change is the talking on the last track--I find it's distracting. Otherwise, I'd rate it five stars. My classes love it.

There's too much caterwauling in this one. Not for meditation, maybe as a quiet background for ambience, I dunno. It didn't quite inspire any transcendental experiences for me.
Inaccurate, but a good listen.......2005-11-08
I like this album, it is soothing and meditative. The music is compelling and the vocals are pleasant. Unfortunately, I can't give it a higher rating, because some of the Sanskrit words are incorrectly pronounced. I'm not trying to be picky, but you'd think that Deborah who's written a book on healing music would know how to pronounce the lyrics of her songs. With that in mind, the album is quite good.

The album is very enjoyable to listen to. If you like a meditative type of music. Several songs are chants (or mantras) that have been put to music. I liked this one very much.

I learned to pronounce Divine names I read in spiritual books,
but never heard chanted before, from this CD.
As a woman, following the voice of a women guide
was easier for me to echo, then male chants.
It is the perfect CD to play and chant along while ringing
my own crystal bowls and sets a relaxing, prayerful mood
before going to sleep, for me.

Breathtaking.......2006-12-17
I bought this CD before it was even well-known, though I wonder how many people even know about it right now. This is truly a gem of a find. The fusion of electronica and opera is amazing and the vocals are haunting and beautiful. I have had several friends listen to this CD and all of them fall in love with it, just like I did when I first heard it. I have since bought Operatica: Shine and the more recent Operatica: Christmas Classics and I can truly say I am just as pleased with both follow-up albums. I listen to a variety of music and have a large collection, and this is one of my favourite CDs! Bravo to the creators, composers, vocalist(s) and artists that brought this compilation together.

I have this album and think it is unusually beautiful, innovative, a woman with a lovely voice.
Why is she not mentioned or given the credit she deserves, it would appear she is some kind of a secret!
Maureen O'Flynn is only mentioned in the booklet of credits in the jewel case itself, why?
Enter her name in the search in CDNOW and it comes up blank! Why?

Maureen O'Flynn is a perfectly good singer, but whoever thought this "marriage" of opera and pop was a good idea is the same guy that thinks John Tesh is a great composer. People have simply stopped listening seriously to music, and it is a real shame. This recording is for the scrap heap. The accompaniment is cheesier than a big wedge of provolone. There isn't a single live musician in the studio with this young lady. The people who think this is good music are the same ones that aren't bothered by the prospect of a canned sound track in a Broadway show or the "pop stylings" of Charlotte Church. Go out and find some REAL MUSIC, people! It's there if you look. As the great American composer Charles Ives wrote: "Open your ears!"
Adding To My List Of Vices: A Continuation.......2003-05-05
When coupling sounds from two opposing polarities into one another and blending them into the perfect texturization of harmonics, one has to have a few things that fit nicely together in order to succeed. One has to first have a musical stylization that works when placed into an arena that isn't normally associated with its feel, making sure that the seams that could be ripe for the picking aren't taken advantage of. Next, one has to make sure that the voice behind the work, if there is a vocal combination in the work at all, is something that will work smoothly and will not let the vehicle of sense assailment down. Otherwise, the end result is painful and the art, it is merely noise. This is especially true when one is trying to fit a glove on the hand that isn't accustomed to wearing it, making certain that the fit is right and that the end result isn't too rudimentary because something was overlooked.
With Operatica: "O" Volume 1, the components come together fabulously and the seams don't really show at all except on the rarest of occasions (two songs out of eleven by my count, and perhaps that's more beat than anything), throwing a mixture of motions into a vocally moving ocean that would, on many occasions, be seen as items that wouldn't fit together. Here, the beautiful voice of Maureen O'Flynn mixes the operatic sounds I had never truly experienced into a sea of electronic beats, ambient rhythms, speaking pianos, and other vessels to compose the perfect structure. This takes a classical form and introduces it to a world that paints new scenes that couldn't have been painted otherwise, letting its audience ingest a spectrum of thoughts that they wouldn't intake normally. I, myself, was stunned to find that I was instantly addicted to the release, listening to it over and over again and wondering where Opera had been all of my life. Honestly, being a child of electronic music that drifts into heavier organisms of feeling, I never thought I would ever think such thoughts.
For people that can't bridge the span of biases and enjoy items that span gaps in tastes and in sensations, then this wouldn't be something that you would enjoy. There are many things within it, like the work itself, that aren't traditional and that a person looking for the flairless would find flavorless, from the sound clips used as accents to the beats that infest the sounds and make them dance through the mind with zeal. For someone that is looking for something that breaks outside the mundane drum and bass notions of music and that wants to hear an angelic voice pouring through synthetically fashioned skylines, then this might be something you'd look into tasting. Me, I never thought that something like this would find its way into my home, but it did more than that. It actually made me listen to things I hadn't really listened to, liking them for what might amount to a first time.

This remarkable CD was first released on LP in 1953 and re-released in stereo sound in 1958. It was one of Maestro Mantovani's classic gold records, an enormous favorite then and now. These are the original London/Decca recordings so you will hear the brilliance of the authentic Mantovani sound. Beautiful Strings Everywhere!!.......2000-12-12
This CD has strings galore. You'll never hear strings sound so beautiful as on this particular recording of Strauss waltzes. Mantovani and his orchestra have achieved something quite special and lovely. The waltzes have an added lightness to them. Instead of heavy sluggish playing by the strings, you hear a bouncy sheer beauty in the string section---truly the gem of this CD. These pieces were recorded in the late 50's but sound magnificent. The sound that London/Decca was able to create back then was astounding. Highlights (personal favorites) on this disc are of course the Blue Danube, Emporer Waltz, and Du und Du. On top of the great sound, playing, and conducting, you'll get this CD at a bargain basement price.
