The Sounds of Science [Box set]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Between 1986's Licensed to Ill and 1999's hits package, The Sounds of Science, the Beastie Boys matured from attention-starved brats to insightful, funky, trendsetting brats with an ace record collection and top choice in collaborators. And by staying in tune with their inner children, the Beasties have also managed not to drop off in fervor as they've continued to push their boundaries. How many other hip-hop/rock groups would be able to put songs as different as the hard-core "Egg Raid on Mojo" and the jazzed-out instrumental "Sabrosa" on the same collection? As well as a slightly deranged take on Elton John's "Benny and the Jets"? At a hefty 42 tracks, this collection has something for everyone--and manages not to skimp on the hits or pad itself with filler. Though it would serve well as an introduction, The Sound of Science is even better as a companion. --Randy Silver --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

The Beastie Boys Great Anthology.......2007-03-16
I don't really have any other Beastie Boys but this is a great anthology. The songs are wonderful and have a great beat. I love this compilation
It is the Sounds of Science.......2006-04-05
This IS the most incredible album ever. How many artists can boast that they're punk, hip hop, funk, soul, and about 3 others??? (Did I forget country?) The thing I like about the beasties is that everything they do always sounds new and fresh. Let me put it this way, it's not like a good charlotte album.
I am so close to owning all their albums, I can taste it! This album is an awesome addition to my collection. I love almost all the songs on both CDs, and hardly any are throw-aways.
The only songs I don't like are Song for the Man and Railroad blues. Which is one of Country Mike's songs...
Anyways, definately pick this up..you're bound to like something on this album.
The Sounds of Science.......2006-03-31
The Sounds of Science is an impressive catalog of one of the most interesting bands of the MTV generation. Anyone who listens to the Beasties should pick this up and if you don't listen to them, get it anyway. You'll start.
The best thing about this set is that it showcases the Beasties versatility, from funked out instrumentals with screaming wah wah, like "Sabrosa" and "Son of Neckbone" to straight up hip hop numbers like "Sure Shot," "Jimmy James" and the Q-Tip collabo "Get It Together." They're harder stuff ("Egg Raid on Mojo," "Gratitude") is right there with the fun old school tunes that made the B-Boys what they are ("Slow & Low," "Brass Monkey") Then of course, come the hits, from "Sabotage" to "Intergalactic" to "So What'cha Want" to "Fight For You Right." Needless to say, the song selection is great.
If you've never dug deep into the Beastie Boys, you will think nothing more of them than some snotty annoying ass guys who rap about partying. Upon actually listening to this album, you'll find intelligent subject matter and insightful lyricism in many of the songs. "Bodhisattva Vow" is a homage to Buddhism, while "Song for the Man" is a commentary on chauvinistic mating calls. "The Negotiation Limerick File" is a call of tolerance done in limerick poetry.
In between all the hits and annoying rap songs are the wonderful oddities that make this album what it is. Two obscure country tunes "Railroad Blues" and "Country Mike's Theme" provide for funny interludes. "Twenty Questions" is has cool lyrics set to a bossanova groove and there are two interesting covers, Sly Stone's "Time for Livin" and Elton John's "Benny & the Jets" (sung by Biz Markie of course). Then there is posibbly my favorite Beastie Boys song, "Something's Got to Give." I don't even know what to call it. It is just incredible.
Overall, this is a comprehensive look at a great band. Anyone who is even the least bit skeptical of their virtuosity as musicians should listen to the two instrumentals and buy The In Sound From the Way Out. One problem, the Antology omits a few of their early staples. "No Sleep Til Brooklyn," "Paul Revere" and "Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun" are missing as well as their first hit, "Cooky Puss." I don't neccesarily like those tracks, but they should be on the anthology. Anyways, stop listnein to me babble and go buy this. You will not be dissapointed.

First things first, I hate rap. Especially people like 50 cent, and a whole bunch of other rappers that I don't even bother to remember their names. (I also really dispise how most rappers have about a million almost naked women in their videos. And you can't even understand what the hell they're saying!) But I don't know what it is about the Beastie Boys...Almost all their songs are catchy as hell, and hilarious at times. I like how these guys can make songs that are all totally different, and always sounding new and fresh. That's what I like about the Beastie Boys. Such as "Twenty Questions" which is bossanova. 60's bossanova? That's not Beastie Boys! But I love that song! And "Something's Got to Give" which is a cool song, with the weird bass, and the funky high pitched noises. yea, that may sound just a bit odd, but it's another great song. And "Time for Livin'" Which is just some hardcore rock. Also, "Root Down" which is extrememly catchy. My point is, that all these songs are great, and they're all unique, and all really different! Great album!

If there were only a "zero stars" option.......2006-10-22
I must agree with the other reviewer. I purchased this before amazon offered the option to listen to tracks before purchase. Had I listened to any of them, I would have not purchased this product.
I really wonder why lucasfilm hasn't gone after these guys with a legal team.
Science Fiction Sounds.......2006-01-31
This "Sound Effects" CD is the worst Sound Effects CD I have ever heard! 3/4 of the sounds on this cd are from movies like Star Wars and Star Trek. The sounds are muffled and you can even hear the music from the movie(s). If you are going to take sounds from a movie at least do it where there is not any music! What sound there are that might be original, sounds like they came from a cheap synthesizer! If you want "Science Fiction" sound effects don't purchase this cd. It is a waste of your hard earned money. I am very disappointed. I guess you do get(or don't get) what you pay for.

Definately Worth A Look.......2000-06-30
This is an excellent album! It is almost the same as the Beastie Boys' Anthology so I can only recommend it to huge fans. It is a great C.D. but not worth the money for only one extra song if you are a new fan. For new Beastie Boys fans I would recommend Hello Nasty, Ill Communication or Paul's Boutique. The Beastie Boys are great and it is worth checking out any of their C.D.'s. Get the Anthology first.
