Frigid Forms Sell [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews
Buddyhead
This cd blew me away. 12 tracks of innovative and brilliant progressive rock. this being Milemarker's third full-length release along with a slew of singles, I know you are wondering why they aren't in the limelight of the indie rock community(er whatever), and your guess is as good as mine. The songs change parts quickly and un- announced making sure you are always on your toes while listening to them. so now you want to hear comparisons... Milemarker is part Jawbox, part vss, part Sleepytime trio all neatly crafted together with their own unique sound. Milemarker is drawing a chalk line in front of cheap and cliche-ridden labels saying "just try it bitch". This is the band you need to back. for your own good.

About the Artist
The Milemarker performing and recording collective was originally conceived in late 1997 by Ben Davis, Al Burian, and Dave Laney. It currently consists of the aforementioned three, Roby Newton, Sean Husick, and Quadra 880 A/V. Past members: Andria Lessler, Seth Freedman, Matt Hall, Joe Devough-Geiss. Members can be identified by small identicaltattoos depicting the mythical many-headed hydra, and the inscription -cut off one head and another three shall grow in its place.

Album Description
For the uninitiated, Milemarker consists of members of Sleepytime Trio, Hellbender, and Griver. While all these bands were seminal bands in their own right, Milemarker departs from the aforementioned bands in form, style, and content. Coming off two well-received and critically acclaimed albums as well as a slew of singles and split releases, Milemarker has established itself as a true innovative force.

Simply put, Milemarker's "Frigid Forms Sell" is an album that realizes the bands potential. This album features catchier hooks, improved vocals, and more crystallized song structures than past efforts. Milemarker manipulates and distillsseemingly disparate musical genres into a work of coherence and ingenuity. Proving that a band can indeed meld polished style and keen critical substance, Milemarker cleverly avoids the common pitfalls of their musical contemporaries by combining poignant lyrics and a refined technique featuring not only the expected guitar/bass/drumkit but also carefully crafted keyboard and electronic sections. Haunting yet lilting male and female vocals are evenly distributed throughout the album, ensuring that listeners interests will always be piqued.

Milemarker can only continue to impress new listeners with their cogent originality.

5 out of 5 stars nothing.......2002-11-30

You really just have to appreciate the passion with which people hate this band. You tend to see that, I guess, whenever some modicum of conviction is being displayed, on any front, and I guess that is to say you just don't see enough people freaking out about the state of the music being made today. Because if you did see actual content in songs, maybe a whole lot more people would be upset. But who could say, really?
This record is pretty rad, on any front, whether it's the cover art, displaying the band in mock-portraits of a Gap ad (which people will no doubt marvel at and wonder, isn't that dude on that gap commercial) or songs about bugs and sex. But it's worth checking out, even if you're only going to get mad and write a negative review about.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy review of Frigid Forms Sell.......2002-07-29

Milemarker have created and successfully produced a sound that is both unique and talent driven with Frigid Forms Sell. The lyrics, contrary to the other reviewer are in fact amazing in their own right. Theres a interesting combination of both emotion, and surprisingly, humor. Since when are all lyrics intended to be believable? Its obsurd to even think about relating that to this album. To say that this band is "new to the music biz" says nothing. One: They are not. The fact that they have two previous full length releases, which are accomplishments in themselves, plus a plethora of 7" and splits proves this comment bunk. Two: Since when did being established in the "music biz" make for good music. Just listen to most "punk music" released by many veteran artists. Most, if not all of it, is horribly written and shows no talent whatsoever. As far as Milemarker is concerned, i was very concerned about the future releases for the band. That was incredibly stupid of me. Every release is worthy not only of purchase, but of the several hours you SHOULD be spending listening to it.

1 out of 5 stars Bad for grooving, good for target-practice.......2002-03-23

There isn't much to say about this CD, except that I think Milemarker is fairly new to the music biz so they might still get it together someday. But for the record, I may consider using their disc as a beer coaster.
Although there are a couple songs which start out strongly, they all inevitabley miss their mark; the lyrics are haphazardly thrown together and seemingly lack the genuine thought or emotion required to make them believable. Synth-lines and beats flow through the recording like oatmeal. It's apparent that this band is torn between hardcore rock, emo, and techno but are unable to unify their sound to include elements of each. Basicly I think they're trying to perfect something they aren't even GOOD at...and although there's nothing wrong with lofty aspirations, Milemarker needs to keep it real and ground themselves somewhere. At least then they might avoid cutting albums that sound like someone turned loose a bunch of toddlers in the studio. Bottom line...until these dudes are veterans to the scene, I wouldn't spend the bread on Frigid Forms.

5 out of 5 stars misrepped.......2001-07-02

Milemarker's been pretty well covered in the following reviews, all I would add is that this album is much more polished than their previous two, which isn't necessarily good or bad, just different. But the first two are definitely rawer, which I thinks suits Milemarker's sound better. Oh, and the guy who said he could tell that they are from the DC area was wrong. I can definitely see how one would think so, with all that jagged dissonance floating about, but they're actually from right here in NC, in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area. They formed from the ashes of Hellbender and Sleepytime Trio, two other bands you should certainly not miss.

4 out of 5 stars good album/ great artwork.......2001-04-11

Somehow, a few seconds into this LP, I could tell they were from the D.C. area. Not an altogether bad thing. They bring to mind bands like Jawbox and The Most Secret Method. Pulling them apart from their townmates is the addition of synthesizer. The electronic feel doesn't overpower the overall sound, though the electronic intro had me a little tense. I really appreciate the group participation with the vocals. It's not something I listen to often, though I sense they could be a great live act to catch. If for nothing else, buy it for the artwork.

4 out of 5 stars A great album, but not their best........2000-09-21

This album sounds like it was record by alien robots, not humans, but that is a good thing. It is probably the most experimental Milemarker album so far and also the logical final product of the "Milemarker Sound". I did not like it the first time I heard it. After a few listens, though, I came to appreciate what I had missed the first few times. It is well concieved and at once hard to listen to and very "catchy". Personally I like their second LP "Futurisms" better, but this is definitely feels more like a album, not just a bunch of songs.

Be warned... this sounds nothing like they do live. If you want a capsule of the Milemarker live sound, check out "Changing Caring Humans", their singles compilation cd. That's my favorite release by them and incidentally it is the least electronic. If you are into the electronic sound, you might want to skip that and just pick up Frigid Forms Sell.

3 out of 5 stars Uneven.......2000-03-06

This album had the potential to be amazing. Several songs are indeed great, particularly Insect Incest amd the more straight forward rock tracks. Others attempt to be too "weird" and fall flat, in particular the borderline-black metal assault of screams and keyboards which close side one (of the LP). The cover of the album is particularly scary. It's hard to believe that Al from Hellbender is in this band; they sound nothing like them at all.

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic mix of influences makes this album a must-have!.......2000-02-23

Once the first track comes on, you're like "this is what this is?" But it is merely an amusing introduction to a fantastic album. This album is very different from their previous recordings. It is fantastic that female vocals are used so splendidly. Don't miss "Signal Froze," "Tundra," or "Platinum."
