Customer Reviews:
Start here.......2007-05-09
This is the album that I use to introduce the band to friends. Inventive guitars. Lots of hooks. Exquisite drumming. A thoroughly enjoyable listen.
My favorite Sea and Cake album.......2007-03-10
The first three tracks are the best run of songs in the entire Sea and Cake discography. Each one of them is absolutely incredible. 'The Fawn' may very well be the most indescribably beautiful song that they have ever written, although 'Parasol' off the second album comes close. If you haven't guessed already, I'm crazy about this album and advise that any S&C fan or anyone thinking about being one should pick this album up. I wouldn't recommend it as their first album to get, that title goes to either the debut or Oui, but this album is indispensable. It's a shame that it's relatively underrated among their other work, because it is absolutely beautiful. Before anyone tosses off this band, they should definitely hear this record first.
The turning point.......2006-08-05
This is the major turning point in The Sea and Cake's career. I prefer the earlier, more varied work, but if you can make peace with Prekop's new "crooning" style of singing, the sleek, sophisticated pop of The Fawn (and later albums) is rewarding listening.
Now, see, there I go: "sophisticated pop". "Sleek". Or "smooth", another common adjective used for The Sea and Cake.
You see, I hate "sleeksmoothsophisticatedpop"...usually. But this is intelligent, finely crafted music that I'll listen to again and again. I haven't yet been able to resolve this particular conflict, but if I could I think I'd finally be able explain the appeal of The Sea and Cake.
All in all, I rate The Fawn just a little below Oui and One Bedroom, but it's probably the place to start to get into the second part of the Sea and Cake's career.
Notes from Heaven. .......2005-05-15
There is a splendor in the music of The Sea and Cake the likes of which I have rarely heard. For me, they are, without question, one of the most underrated bands in history. I regret to also mention that I have lived in Chicago since 1998 and unfortunately have not had the pleasure of ever seeing them live. Prekop himself appeared on St. Patrick's Day but I was not able to attend the concert. Regardless of any personal connections, however, The Sea and Cake will remain in my top five list of bands forever.
This CD is as solid as it could be. Tracks 1-10 go by with great agility and intensity. As I've always said, you need four or five focused listens to even get a feel for their music due to it's complexity. In my opinion, "Ravine" and "There You Are" are the strongest songs and belong in their final compilation. However, there is not a bad offering to be found in these tracks. I bought The Fawn in 2000 and still listen to it today (in fact, right now, this very minute).
stellar.......2002-10-30
How to put into words the beauty this C.d. evokes. I was given a bootleg copy on tape and it was my first introduction to the Sea and Cake. Since then I have bought every recording they have made and apon reflection this is by far their best. I am not going over-board by saying it is truly sublime. The word "infectious"- although cliche is perfect in describing how the music on this album is unlike any you have ever heard and it WILL infiltrate your soul. I have not stopped listening to it since I obtained it three years ago. If you love any of the following; Coltrane, Miles, Tortoise, Modest Mouse, Stevie Wonder, Bach, Beethoven, Mingus, Bob Marley, Curtis Mayfield, Yo la tengo, Radiohead etc.....buy it, buy it, buy it.

Album Description
From "Orlando" to "The Tango Lesson" and onward, director Sally Potter has always been closely involved with the soundtracks to her films--with outstanding results. This score for "Yes" is no different, as it weaves diverse music--including Philip Glass, Gustavo Santaolalla, Kronos Quartet, "Fawn" (by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan), and Eric Clapton with BB King--into both a superb tapestry for this motion picture and as a compelling listening experience on its own.
Further original music by Sally Potter was made with the participation of long-term collaborator, the celebrated guitarist, composer and improviser Fred Frith, who has played on Sally's last four films. Frith has composed for Ensemble Modern and Asko Ensemble amongst others. Best known world-wide as an improvising guitarist, he played on albums ranging from The Residents and Reni Lussier to Brian Eno and Amy Denio.

An aural journey through diverse cultures.......2005-06-28
Quite an eclectic mix of artists and music. I am not sure this CD is for everyone...
From hypnotic instrumentals to howling blues to middle eastern influenced dances to chill dance grooves to classical piano to latin salsa, the soundtrack takes you on an aural journey through diverse cultures. I'm sure it reflects the culture clash depicted in the movie's storyline.
Listening to the sample tracks (at Barnes & Noble.com) makes me wish that I lived in a more culturally diverse area... This is the type of movie I have to watch on DVD because theaters won't risk showing independent films here.
To find the sample tracks at B&N search for "Yes" as the title, then sort the results by "date released". Since it just came out, it should be near the top of the list. Enjoy.
BTW, my 4-star rating is based only on the sample tracks I was able to hear.

just buy it.......2006-03-13
I always find it difficult to attempt to describe the music of Raising the Fawn to people who have never heard of them before. The closest I can usually get is a grittier, sparser Broken Social Scene, mixed with a bit of Explosions in the Sky because of their tendencies for long dramatic buildups and astonishing climaxes to songs. If you own RTF's last album, The North Sea, this new cd is similar, but there have been changes. Whereas John Crossingham, the lead singer and guitarist of the band, handled all the songwriting on previous albums, this time around each member of the band had a hand in the composition of the songs. Nothing against Crossingham (I consider The North Sea one of the top three albums I own) but the music on The Maginot Line has much more variation than the North Sea. If you had heard RTF's previous songs, you might not be able to imagine some of the sounds they create on this album. Take the title track, for instance: it starts off as an almost-sinister sounding ballad before a militaristic drum pounding and fuzzed out bass and guitar start in. This then evolves into a ragged blues riff approaching the end of the song. The first time I listened, this kinda blew my mind. This review has run on too long as it is, so I'm just going to say this: whether or no you've heard Raising the Fawn, if you enjoy good/great/amazing music, with songs that evolve, varied-as-hell sounds, and lyrics that actually matter, you will like this cd.

The best band you've never heard of..........2007-01-19
Saw them open for Broken Social Scene a few years ago and was mezmerized. This is a tough album to describe; I tell my friends that it is both the mellowest and heavyist album I own... crank it up with some quality hifi gear, enjoy a few favorite beverages and you'll see what I mean. I have to give these guys full marks for creativity, musicianship, production and even the album art is wicked! The best compliment I can give this album is that I own several hundred CD's (of all genres) and this remains amongst my top 10 of ALL TIME. If you can find it, buy it.
It gets better each time...........2006-05-29
I bought this album a week ago and I have been playing it nonstop ever since. It is not only awesome, but it is really interesting, too. Each time I listen, I hear different, beautiful nuances. If you like cool guitar work, then this album is definitely for you. The best track, in my opinion, is "The North Sea" - it is darkly beautiful and just blows my mind every time I hear it. "Eta" is also awesome, and a great way to end the album. Buy a copy and listen to it in a dark room with the volume way up on kick ass speakers.
a perfectly constructed masterpiece.......2004-06-19
Due to my love for last years Broken Social Scene record, I decided to check out Raising the Fawn, the main project of John Crossingham who also happens to be one of the members of BSS. This is a very special recording. Crossingham's band manages to keep things varied throughout the record with fantastic results. The obvious standout to me is the single Gwendolyn, but really all the tracks here are excellent. Definitely a must buy for all indie guitar rock fans.

Cool Christian message as well.......2004-09-05
Did any one ever hear this as a cool Christian Cd as well? I know she's said that it was inspired by God, so I was just wandering if any one has used it for kids in church? It's a great message and reminder of how we need to "keep the faith alive"
Mattyd
Fun song.......2004-09-05
This Cd is just plain fun. fun to listen to, fun to dance to, it's just a 'feel good' type of CD. What a sweet, soothing, clear voice she has. I'm ordering her other album "Body, Soul and Mind" as soon as it's available. I've heard nothing but rave reviews about it as well. Please keep making beautiful music!
Mike Dav.
Songs with heart and soul.......2002-07-23
It's evident Fawn puts her heart and soul into her songs. After reading the reviews on Amazon I knew her songs were special and wanted to experience them first hand. I had no idea just how special they were and would be to me. "Oneday" touched me in a profound way. The encouraging words provide needed comfort and courage especially in these days of uncertainty. Music to me shoud have am inspirational (positive) message, words that keep playing in your mind after the music stops (hooks) and on a good beat. I can still hear "Call On Me" and the same applies to the incredible "Fallin' In Love!" I recommend all of Fawn's CD's if you want to be moved and motivated.
A+ Gorgeous!.......2002-07-10
Fawn is extremely talented and A+ Gorgeous! Only a handful of women can pull their hair back, do a wet-back or a braid-back and look good. She is one of those few. She has beautiful skin as well. I love this CD!

Looks like an angel, sings like an angel.......2002-07-23
I got Fawn's cd's today and all I can say is WOW! What a beautiful voice! "The voice of an angel" as it has been said before. Now I can hear why! She not only sings like an angel, she looks like an angel as well! The mixes make me wanna dance and shake my booty!! Oneday is haunting, positive, beautiful and inspirational. Call On Me is simply beautiful lyrically, has a positive message and is a great friendship tribute! Fallin' In Love is romantic, sexy and breath taking adorable! I want to say thank you to Fawn for creating positive, inspirational and heartfelt songs and music! I love this stuff!
Really like this CD.......2002-07-10
I really like Fallin' In Love. I must admit it is a really good recording. I Can't believe she produced it as well. You go girl!
Lucky Star.......2002-07-10
I love Fawn's CD's! She has a beautiful voice-like an angel. The songs she wrote are beautiful. She is my lucky star. She is very talented and obviouly a loving and kind person.
Nice........2002-03-15
This CD is nice to listen to, dance to....and, well, nice.
Sweet Sound.......2002-03-15
Fallin' In Love has such a sweet sound to it. Fawn's voice is beautiful and her tone is very pretty. I am impressed with the production and sound of the whole CD. I like the fact that she not only writes her own material (both words and music) but also produces this as well. She is pretty enough to put some one like Brittany Spears to shame! But the truth is, Fawn is far more talented. This girl seems to do it all. She is not just another pretty face. I am glad I discovered her and I hope she goes "mainstream" soon. I highly recommend this CD to any one who appreciates great songwriting, talent and excellent music.

"Emotional Dance"....dance/pop cross over, with trance European feel, strong vocals and songwriting...
"Our music is about life and the human condition. It touches on different aspects of life, like the horror of racism, the fragility of life, the effects of the heart in personal relationships and conflict. It evokes the joy of love and rhythm in an passionate way. We want people to walk away feeling a sense of excitement, motivation and deep feelings from the melodic and lyrical messages."

Profound for dance music.......2005-10-27
This album is kickin. I dig the songs and the vocals are smooth. The production is tight and the songs have meaning. Rare for dance music to actually say something profound. I recommend this to all ages.
Moving and Grooving!.......2005-06-03
Love this CD! It's moving AND grooving! It has depth to it which most dance music doesn't. I've ordered a couple more for my friends. If you love trance and dance, get it! It has elements of BT in the production and the vocals are rich.
