5 out of 5 stars This is a song for you.......2007-07-15

"Horn of Plenty" is an odd debut album for a band, since it was created before the band proper existed.

Instead, the first Grizzly Bear album is largely the efforts of Ed Droste, and he spreads himself over several genres -- freakfolk, pop, psychedelica and post-rock, layered together into gentle, hypnotic melodies. It's like sitting through a fuzzy, colourful dream and waking just in time for the remixes.

It opens with strange animal noises, and a reverberent hum... and a gentle guitar under a thin layer of murmuring keyboard. It sounds like someone doped Grandaddy. "I'm a deep sea diver with my fins/and underneath your current I do swim," Droste murmurs distantly. "I'm a deep sea diver losing air/and around here I'm sad swimming/you don't care..."

Things get slightly more upbeat in the gentle tripfolk of "Don't Ask" ("I fell into your arms that night/Don't ask"), before trickling into a series of fuzzy, gentle songs: exotic scratchy electropop, fluting indie-rock, ghostly ballads, lo-fi tunes that sound like they were recorded over a walkie-talkie, and shifting epics of shimmering freakfolk. It all finishes up with "This Song," a gentle guitar pop melody that may have a beat, but is as drowsy as a lullaby.

And this release has a second disc of remixed songs, which gives the mellow songs new twists -- jangling strings, a psychedelic reworking, funky dance beats, gentle electronic waves, maracas, grimy rock edges, carnival rock, hard techno, and what sounds like radio static. And these are all done by some brilliant artists -- Final Fantasy, Dntel, Ariel Pink, Efterklang, the Castanets, Alpha, Solex and Safety Scissors.

Grizzly Bear doesn't sound anything like its name would imply -- no rough edges, no rock, no wildness. Just very soothing, mellow fuzz-folk and gently lo-fi indie-postrock, which sounds like a worn-out, half-asleep freakfolker slowly drifting out to sea, in a mist of dreams. Yes, it's that endearing and pretty, but without an ounce of pretension.

Musically, it's layered like the Grand Canyon. At the core, it's made up of gentle guitar riffs and wandering acoustic melodies, but then Droste quietly weaves different sounds over it -- a haze of fuzz, ghostly synth, rattling drums, gentle keyboard melodies, some squiggling vinyl and crackling radio sounds, and a sprinkling of bells, tambourines, flutes, birdsong and other little sounds.

Droste does the same thing with his mellow, gentle, sad voice -- in "Showcase" he layers, echoes and harmonizes with himself, until it sounds like a chorus of Drostes are melting into the powerful melody. Lyrics are almost superfluous, but Droste spins a series of bittersweet songs about wishing that you hadn't lost someone ("My chest hurts a lot tonight/Maybe you can fix that... And when I walk on by, I see you waving...").

Grizzly Bear's debut album is a fuzzy, mournful little gem, and the bonus disc of remixes is pretty good too. Bittersweet, dreamlike and thoroughly enchanting.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet........2007-04-13

That first track Deep Sea Diver.
Oh man.
That is so sweet when that electric guitar comes in at the end there.
It's underwater space time...you know what I'm talking about. That sweet sweet spot.
And then the whole rest of the album.
Not a bad song on it.
I like their second album as well, but not as much...as this one.
Sounds like nothing else. Sounds like the inside of my brain.

I've had this album for a couple of years now, so I didn't get the remixes. I heard em. They're ok. A nice little treat, but the album its self...finds its way in to CD player...often.

4 out of 5 stars Yellow-House is better, but this is still good.......2007-04-07

Because this album tends to be a little more random and spacey than yellow house, I find it slightly anxiety producing, but overall I think it's a great album, but for me, only when I'm in the right mood...

5 out of 5 stars Space lines and walls.......2007-03-03

I listen to a lot of music and I listen to this album everyday...fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Who'd have known?.......2006-02-25

It is evident within three minutes of this album that this is something special. Unlike the usual self-recorded crowd, Grizzly Bear uses their constrained space and uses it to blanket their music with a layer of aural insulation. Through these crackles through time, prepare to feel like you are in the woods. This album is one of the most moving I have found in years.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect soundtrack to Summer 2007.......2007-07-18

Open Your Box is the second of two Yoko Ono remix CDs under the moniker of Ono. The first CD Yes, I'm A Witch gathered a broad range of musical talents to reinterpret her songs creating an eclectic mix of tracks from Peaches electroclash take on Kiss Kiss Kiss to Antony Hegarty's dreamy Toy Boat to Hank Shocklee's short but sweet Witch Shocktronica Intro. Most, but not all, of the remixes work pretty well (Cat Power and Porcupine Tree come to mind as the weaker tracks) with the dancier tracks being the standouts.

Open Your Box, released a few months after Witch, takes its cue from Witch's dancier tracks by being a disc full of non stop incredibly cool dance remixes from more high profile artists like Pet Shop Boys, Basement Jaxx, Felix da Housecat and Danny Tenaglia.

The sound samples will not give you an idea of what to expect because these are multi layered tracks that build up over the duration of the track. The music in and of itself is pretty much your garden variety Euro house that you would hear at your local gay bar but what transcends it is the juxtaposition of Ono's unique voice and vocal stylings over a pulsating pounding beat. Yes, Yoko is not the world's best singer but I enjoy the sincerity in her voice which makes it work really, really well. And her voice will surprise you. It's really not as bad as so many people make it out to be.

The opener, You're the One is one of the highlights for me and is lovely and heartfelt especially when Yoko's voice cracks as she sings "How do I teeellllll you? You're the one."

Another highlight is Peter Rauhofer's Hell In Paradise remix. The start of my love affair with Yoko began with this song when I saw the video for it years ago in the early 80s. What makes this remix so wonderful is once Yoko's sings her vocals over a pulsating trance beat there's this added disco diva chorus that repeats the main chorus of the track. Hard to explain but it's exactly the kind of stuff you want to hear when you're all sweaty and half naked on the dance floor.

Give Me Something is yet another highlight. There's this break in the middle of the song and in a call and response style Yoko sings, "Give me something!" as a male vocal answers "Yoko wants!" It gets even better when Yoko's voice echoes, "Give me something . . . hard...hard...hard...cold...cold...cold. . ."

Possibly my favorite track of the entire disc is the Pet Shop Boy's Walking On Thin Ice remix. I am not a fan of PSB but they do wonders with this remix. I get goosebumpy and teary eyed when Yoko sings, "When our hearts return to ashes it will be just a stor-or-or-ory." Even her primal scream yelping is pitch perfect with this remix.

The only track that doesn't work for me is DJ Dan's Give Peace A Chance remix. I don't think it's possible to turn that song into a dance track without it coming off cheesy.

Open Your Box is the perfect summer CD and was the perfect soundtrack for me and my buds during gay pride as well. Everyone I have played this for either loved it right from the start or reluctantly succumbed to it charms. I used to love Yoko Ono but now I totally worship her. Yoko, you need to get into the studio ASAP and record a disc full of original house music. It will work. I would definitely buy it.

5 out of 5 stars If you like club music, get this NOW!.......2007-07-05

This is an incredible CD. The mixes are all great/good. Her vocals are unique to say the least, but that sets her apart from the generic dance diva.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing remixes for great classics.......2007-06-08

I love Yoko and I love electronic music, so I can only love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Ono - Open Your Box.......2007-05-20

Excellent remixes! Bimbo Jones' catchy 'You're The One" will get you moving as will the unexpected "I Don't Know Why" by Sapphirecut. DJ Dan's mix of "Give Peace a Chance" brings a smile as well. Peter Rauhofer also did an excellent job with "Hell In Paradise".
Although the shortened remixes of "Walking on Thin Ice" and "Everyman Everywoman" are appreciable, it would have been nice to hear some more 'new' remixes instead of what has already been released. Nonetheless, it is very listenable!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Remix/Dance album.......2007-05-09

Wow, this is great stuff. I can agree with critics who say Yoko is not a great singer, but she is a great artist, and these remixes produced by a wide variety of dance floor wizards really knock me out. If you like to dance, and the artists who created the remixes appeal, then get this album. Guaranteed to get you out on the floor! Open Your Box, indeed!

5 out of 5 stars Freakin amazing!.......2007-06-02

Shoooooooooot...Telefon Tel Aviv and their signature sound shining through all of these re-mixed songs! It's freakin amazing. Their beats are always exquisite, and the melodies always lush. Charles and Joshua have taken these songs and totally made them their own in that extra special TTA way. Nobody does music the way these guys do. Please, I implore you -- purchase this disc. And if you don't have'em yet, get their first three releases as well: Fahrenheit Fair Enough, Immediate Action CD single, and Map of What Is Effortless.

Truly the most unique sounds, drum cutting-bleeping-snipping-stuttering-glitching-tweaking, guitar sliding, string orchestrating, swooshing and swooping this way and that. GET IT! ALL OF IT.

5 out of 5 stars Biggest surprise of the year (at least so far...).......2007-05-25

Having seen these guys live, I really wasn't expecting too much from this album, though I know their studio work is far more polished and coherent than their shows might lead you to believe. They seem to have been permanently tagged by one track that's now five years old, Fahrenheit Fair Enough. Which was what caught my ear the first time I heard them. Just a one-track pony?

Nope.

Remixes Compiled is a streamlined sonic surprise. Many of the tracks are vocal, the musical styles of the tracks are wide-ranging, yet the whole album feels totally cohesive, glued together with clicks, blips, and glitches. There's such immense detail in every track-- layers of sounds, sweeping and fading in and out, beautifully timed, always fascinating. It's like listening to imagination.

I'm sold.

Album Description

Kieran Hebden is one of those artists whose receptive audience is without classification. And that extends into the world of musical colleagues. Four Tet has commandeered fans and collaborators as wide reaching as experimental rock bands (Radiohead), massive pop acts (Coldplay), underground hip-hop producers (the late J Dilla), post-punk influenced upstarts (Bloc Party), electronic mavericks (Aphex Twin), folk chanteuses (Beth Orton and Juana Molina), and jazz legends (with Kieran's ongoing collaboration with drummer Steve Reid).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars best remixes ever compiled by an artist.......2007-01-10

Upon first listen I was really impressed by the musical textures alone. Hebdan finds stunningly creative ways to genuinely rework these songs. This compilation tends to sound like an unadulterated, original four tet album and that's a damn good thing. I couldn't get enough of the Lars Horntveth remix which sounds like what avant jazz music might when electronic music producers take over the world. Past that brilliant track, the aphex twin remix comes off almost like an updated Weather Report piece with its fast funk drum-break and its kalimba motif. The Sia remix that it follows has become better than the original in my mind. The Rothko remix alone influenced the way I make music with its interplay of dance rhythms and half-timed, mellow rock jamming. The album concludes with an almost percussionless bloc party remix that ups the emotion just before letting the listener fall gently back down with an intimate Pole remix. The depth of emotion of the final track is amazing considering its minimalist qualities: just a filtered piano melody with intermittent 808-ish drums. The second disk which consists of remixes OF four tet is not so much disappointing as it is novelty, but the "As serious as your life" jay dee remix is hip-hop brilliance. The packaging of this compilation is amusing on its own with its various aesthetic photographs of little crystal animal figures on various mod-looking black and white backdrops. Looks way cooler than it sounds, not to mention sets a great tone for the album. So of course I recommend this album and insist that any Four Tet fan own it.

5 out of 5 stars i wrote this in cold blood with a tooth pick .......2006-11-16

wierd blends that work. known for his variety in styles of music these remixes prove to work in his favor

my opinion better than dj kicks album not to say it didnt have its moments too but there where some weird tracks on there.
lars hontveth remix feels a lot like amon tobin

bonobo remix was previously released but awesome . the only parts that is the same is the hook

the aphex remix is tight if its aphex then it needs crazy drums so kieren chooses funk something i wouldnt think he would use.

mf doom or madvillian remix is great another wierd blend on :great day: its a old western rock like the ventures or good bad ugly soundtrack then the beat drops and it fits like a puzzle.

great album

5 out of 5 stars First partial listen.......2006-11-16

Holy cow this album is shockingly good. If you like Four Tet in general, just buy this.

This has the signature mix of broken up beats and live instrument sounds.

I've only listened to pieces of this. Radiohead Sttrbrain is beautiful because of the contrast of the smooth plaintive singing over the 8x as fast slippery drum mix, stereo phasing and sampling. It's beautiful.

Madvillain, a genius in his own right, is remixed in a way that enhances his style. You end up with a sonic texture where each level is interesting, and somehow each level is harmonious with the other levels, and taken together they are overwhelmingly beautiful.

I'll keep listening, and hopefully it's all this good. But the Madvillain and Radiohead tracks are so awesome I had to post something.

Without a doubt, Can were the best thing to come out of Germany (with the possible exception of Borussia Dortmund). Lodged somewhere outside the sacred and profane, their music was never less than challenging, quite often confounding and an influence on a generation of musicians who listened with its brains. Can, of course, are in the can now, but the malady lingers on, and in these 16 tracks it's exhumed, restructured and generally treated to all sorts of amazing necrophilia, to the point where you could call this something new. But better to call it brilliant. Even Sonic Yoof, not known for their taste, turn "Spoon" into something that's dripping with menace. The Orb perform the usual magic on "Halleluwah," while Pete Shelley's tinkering with "Father Cannot Yell" manages the odd feat of turning it into an '80s extended disco mix. And not one bit of it is bad. If getting in a bunch of grand remixers (add System 7, Kris Needs, Bruce Gilbert, and others to the list above) to perform surgery is the tribute album of the future, then I'm all in favor. --Chris Nickson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars of course this isn't CAN . . ........2002-11-21

. . . this is merely an extention of Can. If you take this album in the spirit of exploration that the band embodied so well, you will reap wonderful rewards. Most of this album is techno-oriented. Sometimes they use their own beats then inject samples from Can songs and manipulate them, other times they use the Can beats as the foundation, or use both. Some songs are pulled off better than others, but all are intrigueing. If you're a techno wiz, you might not consider this music cutting edge, but it's definatly deeper than your average deep house. The raw material itself greatly elevates this album. Much of it is pretty transcendental, especially if you're familiar with the original Can songs because your mind bends as they get manipulated. Particularly in the shroomed-out slow down of "Spoon" mixed by Sonic Youth and the Gareth Jones/Daniel Miller mix of "Oh Yeah" is pretty trippy too. The Bruce Gilbert mix of "TV Spot" isn't techno at all, but what sounds like a really bizarre call of the wild - you have to hear it to know what I mean.

As a bonus, the liner notes with quotes from the remixers every member of Can are pretty cool. And Can themselves like this album (except for Damo Suzuki - not his "tea") so that should certainly tell you something.

4 out of 5 stars So what if the "traditional rock lovers" felt insulted............2002-11-14

I have to say that most of the efforts on this project actually work, and can be very enjoying if listened to with an open mind.
Can was all about exploration and the fact that they have a re-mix comp. will never take away from their original work but rather a interesting homage to a great band by focusing in on the ideas that Can express (now Faust has a re-mix that just came out). One shouldn't compair and constrast the songs and their new alterations. Many of the producers of the redone tracks are from groundbreaking groups (not some lame techno or downtempo hacks)like B.C. Gilbert (Wire) Sonic Youth, Daniel Miller (Mute Rec. founder), Pete Shelly (Buzzcocks) Brian Eno, etc.

If you can afford to try something new then check it out. If it will kill you to hear the tracks "destoryed" then stay away.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but could've been a lot better.......2002-02-24

There seems to be two different opinons on this CD:

The prog rock fans say that the music is too much like "boring modern electronic dance music", and the people into modern electronic music find the remixes "dated" and I admit that most of the remixes aren't exactly cutting edge.

Personally I find some of the remixes interesting, but a lot of it is rather boring and nothing on this double CD can be called essential. My favourites are "Yoo doo right" (because it must be one of the hardest tracks in the Can discography to remix, but they really succeed and do a version that is as far away from the original that's possible), "Oh yeah (the Sunroof mix) and "Tango Whiskeyman". The last track mentioned has absolutely nothing to do with the Can song, by the way, although it has some bits and pieces from the track "Gomorrha" (found on "Unlimited Edition") in it.

The fact that a lot of reviewers claim the Brian Eno remix of "Pnoom" as one of their favourites says quite a lot of the contents of this album. Actually, it's not a remix at all but just pieces of the track cut up and re-assembled in a different order. But I could listen to those funky drums in "Pnoom" all day long so I don't really mind...

I enjoy hearing the classic basslines of Holger Czukay and the metronomic drums of Jaki Leibezeit in any context, so this album provides quite a lot of pleasant listening although it never reaches the heights of the original albums, such as "Tago Mago" or "Future Days".

2 out of 5 stars not worth its weight in salt, and it aint heavy.......2001-02-28

This is NOT an interesting project. Fans of Can, particularly people who really like their more daring/obscure stuff, are not going to be pleased by this turgid 2-slab waste. There are a few good moments -- yeah, Eno's take on "Pnoom" is cute, and sooo much longer than the original (heh) -- but in general this is one to pass on. Coulda been great -- I think they were hoping to market Can to people who actually, like, go dancing. Unbelievable what some people will do for money.

2 out of 5 stars Out of sight and snowblind.......2000-02-28

This album is a good example for boring pseudo-avantgarde music. In the '70s, Can were a highly experimental band and always two steps ahead of contemporary rock music. This remix collection, unfortunately, is three steps behind the work of contemporary techno artists like Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Photek. Despite of the participation of well-known techno-heads like The Orb, System 7, and Westbam, it's unbelievable how formulaic and uninspired the release mostly is. Best efforts here are Brian Eno's funny version of "Pnoom", "Oh yeah" with its uptempo acid house rhythm, Carl Craig's atmospheric mix of "Future days", and 3P's more pop-oriented "Yoo doo right" with some soulful vocals. You can forget the rest, which is made of standardized techno beats, lame ambient soundscapes, and lots of senseless noise loops. Absolutely dull electronic music, masquerading as something important and futuristic. If you're looking for a compilation featuring the original versions, check out "Anthology" and "Cannibalism I-III".

    Album Description

Parent-label Elektrolux has already given pop music both modern and sensually-melancholic influences through artists such as Aural Float and Fous De La Mar. Now via their imprint Mikrolux, an Icelandic band of five called Worm Is Green, continues this aesthetic brilliance.

Worm Is Green was originally founded as bedroom elektronica project by Arni Teitur Asgeirsson. Meanwhile, it has become a band of five, also featuring Bjarni Thor Hannesson (sampler and synthesizer), Thorsteinn Hannesson (drums), Vilberg Hafsteinn Jonsson (bass) and Gudridur Ringsted (vocals). Their debut album Automagic was released on Thule in 2003 and published once again on the US label Arena Rock in 2004.

Push Play is a perfect blend of British New Wave, the 4AD-sound of the Cocteau Twins and essential Portishead-like Trip-Hop. The result: dazzling and elegant pop jewels which, however, do not deny their intense contemporary ambient influences. Like icing on a cake, the second disc in this set is a Worm is Green comprehensive remix anthology. All remixes (except one by the Estonian producer Kaido Kirikmae) have been made by Icelandic musicians. "We have asked all our favorite producers for remixes, and most of them agreed right away. This was just great and a considerable honor since we have not worked together with the entire elite of the Icelandic electronic music scene", says Arni.

Offbeat breaks, cool electro beats, and minimal house all build up to an exciting finish to another epic Mikrolux masterpiece!

    4 out of 5 stars Fascinatingly Inaccessible.......2006-09-07

Isis has gotten better and better and better with each release since the Red Sea. But as their work has become more polished, it has also become less challenging. I like a challenge, and I like this album precisely BECAUSE it took me 20 listens to see anything in it but static and feedback and screaming. It IS alienating and I appreciate that - it keeps out the riff-raff. The difficulty of this material makes its ultimate enjoyment all the sweeter.

And like it or not, this sort of experimentation is what Isis has always been about. As catchy as Oceanic may seem, it was pretty damn risky to crossbreed Tangerine Dream and Napalm Death. This compilation takes similarly huge risks, and they don't all pay off, but its a worthwhile journey and a great introduction to a bunch of acts I would otherwise never have heard of. The Tim Hecker and Venetian Snares tracks stand out, and I replay the Speedranch remix compulsively.

Admittedly, this is not very much like Isis. The raw material is mostly (like 66%) taken from (the raw session recordings of) Oceanic, but the end product bears as much resemblance to it as...say...the Charleton Heston version of Planet of the Apes does to the Tim Burton's remake.

For those looking for more "Isis," I would recommend checking Ebay for their 4 live releases. Isis songs have a habit of mutating in performance, and it makes the live records interesting.

1 out of 5 stars How to Wreck a Great Album, in a Few Simple Steps.......2006-08-30

First off, I would would say that the previous review is about right.

Now, onto these, glorious, wonderful remixes (not)! I think what this really is, is an experiment to see how bad it is possible to make an Isis album sound. They have succeeded fabulously. Whereas Oceanic is a beatiful, flowing, truly fantastic piece of music, the remixes are basically all ambient noise. They really do just about nothing, and its two discs of it to boot. Maybe 10 minutes of pulsing here, with a few vocals thrown in to change it up a bit. Honestly, there is no skill required here, and it basically does nothing musically, either.

Honestly, I don't see why anyone would like this. I guess if you already know you like pulsing ambient noise, pick this up. But if you like Isis but don't know about ambient noise, I would stay away. There is very little Isis here, mostly on the booklet, actually. The two discs bear almost no resemblance to Isis music whatsoever. (Maybe Aaron Turner music, but not Isis. I don't understand what Aaron has for Ambience.)

In short, how would I define these discs? An attempt to make Oceanic as directionless, simple, and boring (really, as non-existent) as possible. Thinking on it further, these aren't really "remixes", so much as taking one note from one Isis song and playing it over for 7 minutes and calling it a remix of the song. That is certainly a simplistic summary, but closer to the truth than anything else.

Caution: You'll probably be bored to tears by this. And you should be.

3 out of 5 stars Listen with an open mind..........2006-05-13

After solely listening to Oceanic and Panopticon for 3-4 weeks, I could clearly say I was addicted to Isis. Everything from the vocals to the guitar work really just clicked with me, as just about everything from Tool and Meshuggah does. Isis is truly a quality band that consistently puts out quality material.

After hearing all of the aweseome remixes to the terrible ones from the worlds of Nine Inch Nails and Skinny Puppy, I came in expecting nothing. I wasn't sure whether these Isis remixes would be interesting, if they would ruin the songs, or if they would give me a truly different take on the song.

I can still say after 5-6 listens of each CD, these are going back on the shelf and staying out of my CD booklet. These mixes are just too weird for me. The vocals on the albums blend extremely well with the guitars, but on their own with little to no background noise, the shout/growl vocals sound extremely bad. It almost seems like some of these mixers went in trying to make the weirdest, most incohesive song possible. I really came in with an open mind, though. Stay away from this CD if you're not a fan of weird, electronic remixes.

5 out of 5 stars Usually remixes suck..........2005-04-24

But this is Isis we're talking about. Enlisting the help of musicians from all over the musical spectrum, this album is a winner. My personal favorite is the Mike Patton version of "Maritime", and that's not because I'm a Patton-Junkie. The tracks range from droning and spacy, to strange, quirky, and electronic.

A must for all Isis fans, die-hard or not. Now you don't have to buy the rip-off Japanese import either!

    4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2005-04-13

This collection of remixes is the best thing to happen to music since "Love and Hate In Dub" by Godflesh. Just when remixes in stoner metal were becoming a thing of the past, Isis took a bold leap and revived the concept. The only downside is that some of the mixes are just ambient tracks with very little relation to the originals. All in all it's an excellent buy and I hope to see more of this sort of thing in the band's future.

4 out of 5 stars worst album of the best artist.......2005-01-21

I have heared negative reviews of the Ventolin EPs but, being an Aphex phreak, decided to purchase them anyway. And I am disappointed! It appears that Richard was running low on money and needed to make some quickly. The quality and diversity of the songs is significantly lower then his other works; the backside of the cover has a straightforward Aphex merchandise; for some reason Richard split the remixes in 2 CDs, even though they would easily fit on one; etc.

The remixes (WARP60CDR) are overall a bit better then the first CD. I'll review it by track:
    -

    1. VENTOLIN (wheeze mix) - even more harsh on the unprepared ears then the original, 'Caustic Window' style techno track. Smooth multi-layered melody flows over the squeaky chaos of breaking beats.

    2. ventolin CARHARRAK mix - repetitive lo-fi sounding techno. Well, at least it's short. My least favourite on the EP.

    3. ventolin PROBUS mix - calm, melodic track, somehow reminds me of medieval music. Music in the shades of tan.

    4. ventolin (CYLOB mix) - starts up as fractured, relatively harsh techno, but it soon develops into a pretty good synth tune.

    5. VENTOLIN (deep gong mix) - slow melody filled with low frequencies is enjoyable, until you hear those annoying clipping twitches here and there, like someone forgot to blend the samples smoothly or remove DC offset...

    6. VENTOLIN (asthma beats mix) - an interesting trippy track, with a bit of 'Drukqs' style. I wish this one was a bit longer, it had plenty of potential to create a full-length track.

    -
Overall, I would not recommend getting WARP60 (original ventolin) to anyone, and this second one (WARP60R) to anyone but hardcore Aphex fans. This is probably the worst album Richard has done so far. Though it has some good tracks too...

2 out of 5 stars Listen to "Young Team" instead.......2006-11-21

A bit of a letdown. Let me explain. The standout closing song from their full-length debut CD, "Young Team," was "Fear Satan." Yet the five remixes (Mogwai re-mixes it too at the end of the first Pig disc) do not capture the soaring majesty of the original. It rose and fell, crested and ebbed in ways that reminded me of classical crescendos. The remakes here, by comparison, all burble about, but are but faint echoes of their source. The other songs, mainly from YT, that are re-mixed on the first disc fail to grab me; they are all electronic rather than guitar, drums, bass & electronics, so that difference, that subtraction in instrumentation, accounts for the minimal approaches favored by the mixers.

As a long-time My Bloody Valentine fan, the MBV mix, at 16 minutes by far the lengthiest selection on either disc, does remind me of that band's glory days in its hints of tuneful distortion trickled through massive barriers of nearly monolithic sound. It is not bad, but this and the Mogwai mix on disc one being the two passable songs out of thirteen contenders, the ratio's too low to count for much.

When this came out in 1998, I recall liking it more than I do now. Perhaps other groups and other producers have gone beyond what eight years ago sounded fresher than it does today. Mogwai, furthermore, seems to have fallen in most of the 00's into a holding pattern themselves, as their recent "Mr. Beast" rests on past triumphs more than daring adventures.

    2 out of 5 stars Kicking mogwai.......2006-03-14

Well this is not a complete disaster, but taking any amazing bands material and playing with them will rarely even do justice to the originals, let alone emulate them..It is nice to see some of their older lo-fi material get a nice cover of sparkling sheen on top with the reinturpeted tracks..Unfortunately it is always the original brilliance of the writing, not the re-worked beat placements, that fans will appreciate..

    4 out of 5 stars burning like a log.......2005-03-13

This review is for the second disc only, the Fear Satan remixes. Given that Mogwai bears no trace of humor in any of their original music, it is not surprising that this an extremely artsy bunch of remixes. All the tracks could be described as experimental. I don't know if I'd call any of this "groundbreaking!" or "highly conceptual!" but it's got some pretty interesting music. Most of these aren't really songs at all; they are more accurately described as "sound sculptures", little journeys through texture and mood. It's very rewarding for lovers of ambient music, calling to mind songs by Fripp & Eno and Seefeel. However, in spite of all pretension, there's enough rocking on here to keep it from being awful.

    Mogwai remix:
The most striking thing about this remix is its reductiveness. It relies heavily on long sustains of notes and chords and looping samples from the original material. It is slower than the original, with lots of space between notes. The result is extremely ambient. Even when distorted guitar appears at the end of the song, it seems mellow within the context of the remix.

    u-ziq remix:
This is the most aggresssive of the remixes. Like many other u-ziq tracks, it has jarring changes in tempo that keep it from being danceable. That's okay though, I only dance to Mogwai when I'm at a Mogwai show and am not afraid to look stupid. The really hyper tempo of the songs main section contrasts well with the two mixes that surround it, but overall it is my least favorite.

    Surgeon remix:
Did I say the Mogwai remix used a lot of sustain? Um, the ENTIRE surgeon remix is pretty much just sustaining notes fading in and out, with very subtle effects gradually appearing and disappearing. It is very reminescent of an Autechre track named "Vietrmx21", which is almost entirely made up of just one chord progression repeating infinitely up and down a scale with a lot of reverb and sustain fading in and out. However, this is even simpler than that. A fun track for electronic fans, with a systematic approach to deconstructing a song using effects only.

    Kevin Shields remix:
My Bloody Valentine fans, be warned: this does not sound like My Bloody Valentine. This one is the most epic of the remixes, spanning 16 minutes, almost twice as long as the original. I used to hate this remix because I thought there were so many cool parts at the beginning and end, but the middle had an almost unlistenable amount distortion on it; so much distortion that you can hardly hear any of the notes that are being played, it's all just the sound of speaker pop in and out. I can listen to it now, but the distortion still bothers me. However, one highlight is that Kevin Shields is really good at making throbbing percussion and bass lines by looping rock n roll breakbeats. Even though the loop of the percussion repeats ad nauseum without really changing at all, the break that Kevin picked is so good that it doesn't get boring. His remix for Yo La Tengo's "Autumn Sweater" shared the same quality. Also, this remix has a bunch of worthy atmospheric moments and sound textures. Overall, definitely worth listening to.

Gwai on, Wayne. Gwai on, Garth.

5 out of 5 stars So we're flogging a dead horse are we? Oh right, pig sorry!.......2005-01-28

These remixes do a damn good job of the material there is given. From noise workouts ( a la Kevin Shields and My Bloody Valentine ) to funky workouts ( DJ Q's remix of R U Still Into It ). This remix album has something for everybody. Although depending on how you view remix albums, you'll still be missing out on one of the most addictive albums there are - remix album or not!

    4 out of 5 stars Spinning a Dead Pig.......2003-07-02

There is quite a bit of dead weight on the first cd, but the high points are very good. Klute's version of Summer is basically a breakbeat track, but one that is a credit to the genre. Kid Loco's remix of Tracy rocks like a live hiphop instrumental, but it's basically the orignal looped without words and with a pretty funky drum track laid over it. Max Tundra's take on Helicon 2 is worlds apart from the mellowed out original, starting off kind of a little too loud and scary before it goes sailing off into dreamland. The Hood remix of Like Herod is also damn cool. Most other mixes here are pretty good, but at least two get on my nerves so much that I've probably listened to them all the way through only twice since i bought this (about 1 and a half years ago). One thing missing here are vocals, which are already so rare in Mogwai's oeuvre. (I think we to hear the word "change" a few times, but that's it.) The second disc is so slow and pretty that I feel like a zombie in paradise, as if I were suspended in a numbed awe for the 60-or-so minutes of Mogwai Fears Satan, which means that I don't really like it that much, though i definitely "appreciate" it. All the mixes here are very ambitious, but none veer away from the slow-and-subtle structure of the original. It makes for good background music while stoned and watching silent movies (other movies work too) on mute.

And the pedigree of the musicians who sought mixes by Mat is not to be sniffed at. Serge Gainsbourg, Moloko, Blaze, Recloose, Louie Austin are just a few of the names here. With a total of 21 mixes across a double CD gatefold digipac this is the most extensive, comprehensive catalog of Mats undeniable remixing talents. Due to the diversity of his work Matthew's music has an already strong fan base in both the house and electronica scenes, therefore the demand for this release, much of which has never been on CD before should be high. Highlights include, Serge Gainsbourg 'Bonnie & Clyde (Herbert's Fred & Ginger Mix)', Moloko 'Sing It Back (Herbert's Tasteful Dub)', Mono 'Highlife (Remember Herbert's Mix)', Dzihan & Kamien 'Before (Herbert's After Dub Remix)' and many more. The last two attempts at trying to tell you guys how awesome "Secondhands Sounds" is failed to get posted...so I will try again hoping this will be the charm. Herbert, this Phenom Phenomenon, has done yet another amazing job of mixing and producing or in this case remixing, making songs from the likes of Nils Petter Molvaer, Motorbass, Two Banks of Four, Presence, Terra Deva, Moloko, Louie Austen and Dzihan & Kamien his own with his signature style of taking everyday sounds and manipulating them into wonderful pieces. "Secondhands Sounds" won't appeal to all, but if you like mix CDs, it's worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Ever so scrumptious! (Vinyl snobs beware...).......2002-06-21

Matthew Herbert collects some of his best remixes into an excellent set of songs. Most of the tunes on this set are 4/4 time and range from 110-125 bpm and would fit nicely into the faster tempo portion of a chillout set or a quiter portion of a house set.

Herbert's genius has always been giving every remix a distinctive flavor and this set represents that very nicely. I can't quite describe it, though... it's smooth, but still interesting. You could read with this as background or it could play very nicely loud in a club setting.

I had some difficulty giving this record five stars because we vinyl snobs have to pick it up in two halves at...a pop. On the other hand, you get six pieces of quality vinyl out of the deal and a few extra songs, all on the second half:
1.) Mr Oizo - Last Night Herbert Murdered My Poodle
2.) Ferenc - Brown Beat [Feed Me Herbert Mix]
3.) Bjork - Pagan Poetry [Matthew Herbert Handshake Mix]
4.) Agent Blue - Opera [Herbert's Late Night London]

5 out of 5 stars a new language in music.......2002-05-28

You have to buy this album now. Not later, not tommorow, right now. It is the future of music. It will amaze you. The mixes are indescribable. just listen closely.

5 out of 5 stars go and get it.......2002-03-18
