About the Artist
APELL is a Anthony Pell a solo artist who has recorded an album which varies in style from ambient electronic grooves to heavy rock with funk and jazz thrown in.

Album Description
Beaver Street & Beyond is the new album released by the downtempo electronic musician Apell in April 2004. Apell has previously been described as "a tour de force with a creative mind who lives in a world of his own" - Marty Peters RECORDING (Magazine US) Apell is Anthony Pell an Australian, Melbourne based multi instrumentalist who records this innovative music in his own studio.

Beaver Street & Beyond is a musical progression from Apell’s 1st self titled 2000 album utilizing his multi instrumental talents to create music from downtempo grooves to industrial tinged breaks. The album ranges from the frenetic electronic jazz of Entertainment Complex to the heavy dub of Wrinkle, to the upbeat funk of Suit Up & more. Like the debut album, Beaver Street & Beyond features guest performers, such as John Dickens playing guitar on the flamenco bagpipe groove of Exciting Soul Cock of the Stirring North and the sublime vocals of Rachael Hawkins on the smoldering Tomorrow.

Apell’s innovative production techniques are inspired by a diverse range of musical influences from rock (U2, Radiohead, King Crimson, Zappa & Hendrix.), to jazz (John Coltrane, Miles Davis & John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra) to electronic (Massive Attack, Squarepusher, Unkle & Groove Armada). Apell’s musical objective is to create innovative & entertaining music that is not just a carbon copy of other electronic music.

Beaver Street & Beyond’s title was inspired by the album being recorded at three addresses. This theme is reflected in the cover artwork with images of where the music was recorded around Melbourne. Despite the studio relocations the album has a cohesive sound and feel.

Beaver Street & Beyond is an album of innovative electronic music from downtempo grooves to industrial tinged breaks & more from an artist who "isn't afraid to try & do things a little differently." Computer Music (UK).

Album Description

This is dark instrumental surf music. Reminiscent of classic surf artists, Dick Dale & the Del-Tones and The Ventures but with a darker modern twist. Murder On Beaver Street shifts between different styles within the surf genre. For example, the fast picking style of Dick Dale, the spaghetti western feel of Ennio Morricone, and the primitive rock and roll style of Link Wray.

4 out of 5 stars Pay No Attention To The Song Titles!.......2005-09-03

Overall this is well-played instrumental surf music of a gentle nature. I have no idea where the group came up with song titles like "The Mummy's Curse," "Shallow Grave," or "Death, Death, Death." There is nothing eerie or ominous about any of it. In fact this CD could be played in the background of a quiet get-together with friends and set a very nice ambience. It is worth owning but don't buy it expecting music in the "horror surf" genre.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!.......2004-06-08

This CD is great. If you are looking for a different type of music other than the same old pop music out these days, pick up this CD!!! You can feel the soul in the instruments these guys play and you WILL be caught dancing or jumping around!!! This is the best surf I have heard!!!

4 out of 5 stars Original, Groovy & Seductive Electronic Music.......2004-06-09

"Beaver Street & Beyond" represents an original and groovy album of seducvtive electronic music, convincingly flirting with jazzy flavors, rock approaches, 70es glamour, disco-funk fun, dub effects, industrial attitude, drum'n'bass aesthetics, retro samples and more. Mostly downtempo electronica, the tunes are easily captured by the free flying spirit of uptempo break beats that make it even more exciting. The everyday sounds (samples and location recordings from Australia) definitely offer a lot in terms of personal touch and originality, but also a heavy use of guitars (even classical ones) help better define its character. The key of interpretation lays in the eclectic and brilliant mind of this dynamic and pro-active fellow who came up with this music. This album is so diverse and multifaceted in style that it could appe(a)l to a number of different music fans, including those who like Massive Attack, Unkle, Groove Armada, Zappa, Radiohead, John Zorn and many others. The only negative thing I would mention, if I had to, is that even though the album goes by without getting boring and maintaining a certain frenzy excitment, it also lacks in outstanding episodes, or potential hit-singles, if you will. Everything is interesting and cool, but nothing is mind-shattering phenomenal, altough I can see Mr. Pell might be on the right track.
There's quite a buzz around Apell's music, at least in Australia, so I suggest you make some time to figure out if it is worth your time, because it was worth mine.
