Within A Second
Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Phenotract was created by NJ native Eric Shans in 1999 and has not stopped evolving. Eric has also played live keys for Metropolis recording artist Cesium 137 for several years, which led to C137 mastermind Isaac Glendening helping Eric produce and shape "Within A Second."
Album Description
Exploring the Unknown with an adventurous technological sensibility, striking sparks and fanning flames, fusing cold hard tech and human warmth... "Within A Second." Phenotract uses a myriad of anthemic hooks, funky, oddly house-like beats, atmospheric moods, breathy, otherworldly vocals and imaginative electro sounds and structures to create a debut album remarkable for it's individuality without sacrificing accessibility. "Within A Second" is the debut album of Phenotract: a means of experimenting with electronic sounds, textures and rhythms geared for the progressive dancefloor and mind. Drawing inspiration from classic electro and ebm, house and hard trance, Phenotract strives quite successfully to meld these potentially disparate styles into a seamless whole.
Within A Second, Music, Phenotract, Uplifting, reflective, and moody electronic dance music infused with hook laden melodies, techno/trance/house and industrial elements, and dreamy atmsopheres.

Milkshake, the duo of Lisa Mathews and Mikel Gehl (alums of the pop/rock act Love Riot), pours heart and soul into Bottle of Sunshine, and kids ages one to six will slurp it up the same way they did Happy Songs, Milkshake's harmony-thick debut. Mathews's pleasant voice (reminiscent of Cowboy Junkies's Margo Timmons' in its sleepy, drifty, peacefulness), and a light acoustic touch earns this act a spot in the cool kids' musicians category. Parents will love Sunshine for its pared-down folk/rock sound, and kids will appreciate a lack of shyness when it comes to getting silly. For parents, some children's records make the drone of a blender seem a preferable listening experience. In the span of two super-smooth discs, Milkshake manages to reverse all that. --Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
Well, true to the phrase "Good things take time," two years after the release of our 2002 debut CD Happy Songs, we present Bottle Of Sunshine. The disc offers fifteen brand new Milkshake originals the whole family can groove to. You'll also find lots of variety here, although most of the songs still live in the rock genre. We recorded "ABC Of Me" live in the studio with a jazz combo. It's a new take on the Alphabet Song, and each letter stands for some quality or thing that reminds us of how great we are, and how wonderful childhood is. "Boom Boom" turned into a country rock song as we added fiddle and banjo and a "yee-haa". There's a doo-wop tinged song about having fun in the water called "Woo-Woo." There are some totally acoustic songs ("Bluebird" and "Milkshake!") and some very electrified, all-out rock songs ("School" and "Space Song"). But every song is memorable. And each one was great fun to record.
British children's author/illustrator Alexis Deacon created the cover art for Bottle of Sunshine, along with illustrations for the 16-page booklet accompanying the CD. Please look for his wonderful children's books "Slow Loris" and "Beegu," both published by Kane Publishers, NY.
Bottle of Sunshine also contains a bonus: three Milkshake music videos of songs from Happy Songs. Two of these, "Fingers & Toes" and "Tall", are fully animated. The third, "Happy Song", is a live action video with some animation sprinkled here and there.
Customer Reviews:
Love this cd!.......2007-07-18
I bought this cd after seeing a Milkshake video on PBS. We have had it over a year and still listen to it every week. It is so full of energy and fun. It makes you want to get up and dance. Adults can even tolerate listening to it in the car. I recently purchased Milkshake's cd "Play!" also, but it is not as enjoyable.
Great.......2007-01-10
I love this CD-my son can listen to it over and over and over again. One of their best!
Wonderfully entertaining .......2007-01-06
From preschoolers to first graders, "Bottle Of Sunshine" will prove a 'kid friendly' favorite with its toe-tapping tunes, hand-clapping rhythms, and sing-along lyrics flawlessly delivered by Milkshake (singer Lisa Mathews and guitarist Mikel Ghel) with their usual flair and easy expertise. The fifteen superbly presented and impressively recorded pieces comprising this outstanding and highly recommended CD album for children include: Bluebird; School; Woo-Woo; Milkshake!; Boom, Boom; ABC of Me; Space Song; Book of Dreams; Jump; Smile; Ms. R&R; Rainy Day; One Wish; Sleepytown; and the title piece, Bottle of Sunshine. This is a wonderfully entertaining and sure to be kid-pleasing addition to any family, preschool, daycare center, elementary school, or community library CD music collection for children. Also highly recommended is Milkshake's other kid's CD, "Play!" which features songs about kids having fun playing baseball, bowling, pretending, playing music, having parades, planting a garden, and more!
Fun... and won't dull your brain........2006-11-05
I purchased this CD for my 18 month old daughter after hearing the ABC song at library storytime. She has some definite favorites and asks for them as soon as we get in the car. The songs are cheerful, clever and fun to dance/sing along with. We recently ordered another copy as a gift for a 5 year old. She LOVES it too!
Highly recommend!
Fun Music Grownups can enjoy with their kids!.......2005-11-16
Not only do my kids love the music, but I do too!! We've seen them live and they're awesome. Lisa has so much energy and dances around in her "tutu" and those "crazy tights" and Mikel is so awesome with the kids. They are talented musicians who make kids music fun for everyone. Watch them on Noggin - Jack's Music Show. The videos are lively and fun! I hope they'll make a DVD of the videos, including the one's on their web site.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2005-12-21
Throughout history the lute has been used to accompany the human voice. The art of the lute ayre, like so many English cultural activities,is an eclectic one, for there are many iinfluences in its evolution. These elements basically are: Classical and Bardic recitation, Italian improvisation, and French declamatory metrical forms. The many and varied type selections on this recording testify to all of these characteristics. Some of the composers included are: Campion,Ford,Holborne,Danyel and of course, John Dowland. This disc showcases 2 great musicians who become one in performance. It is as if they could read each others' minds. The perfectly beautiful voice of Chance, who is in his element when he performs songs from this era, complements the technique and sensitivity of Wilson's lute playing. The songs themselves are very entertaining and run the gamut of human emotions. The title song: Sypres Curtain of the Night has to be one of Campion's best! Buy it if you want to sit back and experience an hour of pure pleasure!

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful music and lyrics.......2004-08-17
I love this CD. When I first got it, I listened to it over and over ... especially the second half. Fine musicianship from the musicians and the singer, I think. I passed it to other baroque aficionados who were similarly delighted. Those not used to baroque instrumentation may think the songs all sound alike. I felt, however, that there was great emotional variety in these many lute songs. Beautiful.
Dissapointing.......2004-01-25
I recently purchased this cd and had high hopes for it, being a fan of such music. When I actually got to listen to it, I was quite dissapointed. All of the songs sound identical, the same voice, and the same tunes. The woman's voice on this CD got a bit annoying since it sounds as if she's singing with her gag reflex. All in all, I'm not very thrilled with this cd.

Atmospheric, moving, groove laden and catchy..........2004-08-02
I'll start my review by the artwork and then the music itself.
Cover art/liner notes: very cool...i like the zoom-in
effect when you go from cover to the inside pages, as
though we're looking from up above and are able to see
the small details of the world below (even the glowing
jellyfish, which is my favorite pic)
1. prisms i: somewhat churchlike feeling...mix of
light and dark sounds...perfect, seamless transition
into the next track.
2. twilight haze: love this one...very well
mixed/produced (though that can be said for the whole
cd)...has a very new order feel to it, which is always
a good thing!...still one of my faves (i heard this
one in demo before the cd release)
3. freezetime: nice transitions between different
soundscapes (i.e., more digitized/rhythmic in the
beginning, slower tempo midway)...song ends as a
moment ends (probably the point of the song!)...like
watching a short film, it has a beginning, climax,
denouement.
4. skydomes: another of my favorites...quite
haunting, melodically...there are a couple parts that
remind me of depeche mode's "behind the wheel"
remixed...as you can tell, i tend to like the darker
stuff.
5. motionstate: danceable, rhythm-driven,
synthy...i don't connect as much with this one, but
it's still very good, and it transitions into the next
track very well.
6. waves: very, very good...plot-driven (this is
another track with a movie-like feel)...very dramatic
shifts in sound, which i like tons..."will we see each
other again" is such a desolate line, so of course i
love it.
7. prisms ii: feels like the "dark night of the
soul"...a period of transformation, where pain is
inherent to the experience of changing.
8. drifts: feels like the morning after the "dark
night of the soul"...moody, thoughtful,
desolate...great shift at around the 3:00 mark,
feeling of unsure hope--hopeful that she will come
with you, unsure that she will...another favorite.
9. red glow: very digital world feel, a la "the
matrix"...dark, confused...i love the line, "wasteland
of diluted/deluded secrets"--i'm not sure if it's
diluted or deluded, but both words work splendidly and
give a compelling spin on the meaning.
10. lunatrip: also has a very movie-like
feel...echo/synth effects are very space-like, which
was probably the intent given the title.
11. distant voices: nice mix...vocals around 2:40
mark have underwater/echo sound to them, haunting
feel...nice blend of vocals/synth...very retro-80's
underground-y new wave.
12. neosymmetry: personal
transition/revelation...beginning reminds me of an
awakening, a rebirth, maybe molting of an exoskeleton
or emerging from a cocoon...body of song is energetic
and young.
13. outside static: busy, scattered, distracted,
preoccupied, impatient...love the space/air at around
the 4:00 mark and the music that follows...
14. prisms iii: melodic, thoughful, lovely, and then
the moment is gone like a switch was flipped...the
credits roll...musically, this was a nice way to bring
the work full circle, right back to the beginning...as
though despite all the shifts and changes we've gone
through, we're still who we were; part of us does not
change...
in conclusion: the album is at times apocalyptic,
sometimes dream-like, sometimes hopeful, sometimes
intimate...an intense, digital catalogue of the human
condition....
Recommended highly
Don't dismiss this.......2004-03-26
I have to admit I've never been a fan of techno music, and without formal musical training, there's not much I can comment on regarding tones, beats, and hooks. But I can speak as an average, music-loving consumer to mention that I was so pleasantly surprised by this CD that I played it for every roommate, friend, or relative I could find, and haven't stopped listening to it since I got it several months ago.
A very noteworthy fact to mention is that this album is basically a one-man show. Eric Shans, the sole member of Phenotract, manages to combine beats, sound effects, breathy vocals, and his own written lyrics to create a variety of moods that flow flawlessly into one whole album.
As I said before, I don't particularly like techno, and I don't like to go to clubs to dance, but this album is so much more than the lyrically challenged, thumping, bass-heavy noise that I hear kids dance to at clubs these days. "Within a Second" is excellent to drive to, good to space out in front of the TV to, probably insanely inspiring to dance to, and pretty wonderful "mood" music as well.
A problem with categorizing music into genres is that you may love something you never would have thought you could love.
New stuff - fresh sound.......2004-02-25
I bought this cd directly from Eric Shans, the mastermind behind PHENOTRACT and was incredibly surprised.
Why? Because this is a one man band. Mr. Shans does it all!
But the interesting part is that every song has a hook, something different that keeps you interested from track 1 to track 14. This cd will be played on dance floors everywhere....and after so many spins....will still sound as exciting as it's first play.
Tinman Records is know for signing fresh, innovative performers...and with Phenotract...they've hit the nail on the head and kept the music alive!

Passionate Bohemian Accordian Instrumental with Strings!.......2005-09-26
Very hard to describe but unforgetable in passion and life. I saw these guys play live, to a packed theatre. We were transfixed by the beauty and depth of this Gypsy/Ethnic explosion of sound. As I recall several audience members ran up to the front of the theatre, stripped off their clothes completely and danced with wild abandon. Being as it was Portland (little Beruit) Oregon, no one objected. Highly recommended addition to anyone's electic collection!
Amazing, fascinating, unique, and sophisticated.......2005-07-04
I've become a big fan of 3 Leg Torso since they played at the Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle in 2004. Mesmerized by the beautiful music, especially the violin, I bought both of their CDs, which I have listened to for numerous times. I was lucky to see them play live three times in Seattle. Hope they release more CDs and come here more often.
A Brilliant, Inventive, and Engaging Work of Musical Art.......2004-01-06
This is one incredible CD, a collection of witty and engaging tunes, like nothing I've ever really heard before. It could be the soundtrack of a fabulous, as-yet-unmade film, perhaps a cross between a Hitchcock thriller, a French farce, and an unexpectedly tender love story. One song sounds like a chase through the Casbah, and the next a semi-cynical confession of indiscretion, told over drinks in a little cafe on the Left Bank. Throw in a bluesy number for an aging chanteuse, then perhaps a little bluegrass, and then maybe something a nostalgic Russian might dance to, after a round of chilled vodka and caviar. For all its world-wide, cosmopolitan flavor, the CD is focused, fun, and brilliantly performed. It's wonderful. I can't wait to see the movie!
Witty, comical, bright, and startlingly engaging........2003-12-17
Flattering adjectives stack easily on this energetic troupe of gifted musicians. Astor in Paris is a joyous sonic tapestry. That's because 3 Leg Torso pulls off the rare trick of creating a surprising melodic language that's instantly familiar and foreign - like hearing your cat speak to you - by mixing styles from Eastern Europe, modern classical, jazz, and music well beyond my ken. The brainy depth of compositions by principals Courtney Von Drehle (accordion) and Bela Balogh (violin) stages an ample forum to showcase the feline grace, humor, and boundless vigor of all the performers. After reading on the web about their live performances in the Northwest , I only hope these (shamefully provincial!) Oregonians can soon bring their spirited musical adventure to the East Coast!
Just the right sounds.......2003-12-07
This new combination of uniquely wonderful and wonderfully unique tracks is a must have from 3leg torso. I love this music. If you get a chance make sure you catch one of their live shows too.
