Slates/Part of America Therein [Import]

Editorial Reviews
New Musical Express
Slates, originally a six-track ten-inch mini-LP, is coupled here with a rare U.S. live album, A Part of America Therein, 1981 which is spasmodically vital but patchy. Slates, though, is fabulous, the Fall at their finest and most diligently tuneful, [Mark E.] Smith seeing ghosts in Leicester Square, sensing paranoid conspiracies in supermarkets and churches and getting all smoochy on "An Older Lover..."

If you have to own one Fall record, this is the record to have; *Hex Enduction Hour* has its moments, but that's the point, and "Brixish" has her moments, but that's another point. Do you have to own a Fall record? Well, do you have to own this for *Slates* alone? Are you under 40? Do you think you're both cool and kinda literary? Do you not have very much money? I'm not kidding; Mark E. Smith is good for you and not the other way around, and you can be lots and lots of people because he's really not paying attention; I suppose we are to work on our relation to self, which need not be very good but have its moments.

"Leave the Capitol" is one of its moments, the other "relations" are waystations of a none-too-unbearable suffering (the exertions and perplexions of real life), and the live set is a nice way to relax (Mark's kazoo sounds great). Has there ever been another record like *Slates*? There have been a lot of records like *Slates*, but if almost tens of thousands of people have been able to work up an enthusiasm for this maybe that's not such a big problem -- i.e., perhaps the palpably great literary conscience of Britain's last twenty years should be divested of ticks and "allowed" into the "passing shows" he in fact partially owns. A story about stories, specifically stories not told about English literature, from a don of the streetcorner and associates on "permanent holiday" -- and no, that one was not so shaggy.

Yes, it's tough to play favorites with the Fall catalogue, as each release has something spectacular and unique hidden within its grooves unlike any of their others. SLATES, though, probably has more jaw-dropping and gut-twisting blasts and cool-outs than some bands' whole careers, let alone other Fall records - all in 23 minutes plus change. The track "slates slags etc" on its own has enough momentum to propel an entire marathon; for 6 and a half minutes it just takes over the room, twisting about anarchically, the snare fills smacking you hard in the gums. "an older lover etc" is just this simmering low-key gloom device to make your skin itch on the inside - it hisses with these sinister, spiny guitars and vibrates with inertia from the roiling, gooey bass. top notch stuff, and defiantly catchy. Smith is just the icing on the cake, all art-school falsetto scat and divebombing snarls, with some truly warped imagery ("french fries spread on her face(?)") to boot. I don't know what this says about me but I'll NEVER tire of this track. In fact i doubt i'd tire of this disc at all, it's amazing, focused, and energetic - words descriptive of the fall but infrequently applicable to a full record of theirs. As a bonus you get A PART OF AMERICA THEREIN, 1981, a live document that isn't as grating as many say - you get used to the recording quality after three minutes, and sometimes the band really reaches the mandatory listening level i've accorded SLATES (this live version of "totally wired" beats the yolk outta the studio version hands down imho - though no other live track here can claim superiority over a studio version). Naturally, SLATES stands as a completely essential part of the UK post-punk experience - one of its crown jewels in fact.

    5 out of 5 stars A HOLY EXPERIENCE.......1999-10-31

If this album doesn't get your hairs to stand on end, you need your pulse checked. The songs on Slates are so creepy and organically dark, unlike contrived poser Marilyn Manson, that you will be taken to another time and place. The guitar work is horrifying (in a GOOD GOTHIC sense) and the vocals of Mark E. Smith are mesmerizing. A Part of America is live cuts that sound poorly recorded but are nevertheless OK. Buy it for Slates and you'll feel transported to a place where raw English angst and pain were what made early 80s British music supreme.
