Young, aggro, and from Los Angeles--it's tempting to put Incubus in the already crowded category populated by Korn, System of a Down, and their other loud and heavy brethren. But that would sell Incubus short, because Make Yourself, the quintet's sophomore album, is a strong progression beyond their 1997 debut, S.C.I.E.N.C.E.. More like Faith No More than Limp Bizkit, Incubus still have that teen-mosh appeal, though the songwriting and instrumentation on Make Yourself is diverse and thoughtful, both lyrically and musically. "Drive" is an easygoing, slightly trippy acoustic-based outing, while oddball scratching (courtesy of DJ Chris Kilmore) and trip-hop funkiness make "Battlestar Scralatchtica" aptly titled. "Nowhere Fast" is vaguely 311-ish with a reggae tinge and lovely melodic interludes, in contrast to the furious intensity of "Out from Under," which gives Make Yourself a surprisingly cohesive diversity that's hard to categorize. Ultimately, singer Brandon Boyd is not a vocal genius, but lyrically and in performance, he's sensitive, charismatic, and unique. Ditto for the 13 cuts that make up Make Yourself. --Katherine Turman
Customer Reviews:
My favorite Incubus cd........2007-07-17
This is the ultimate Incubus album because it has the best mix of all the different elements that make this band. It has some aggressive rockers, some trippier, softer songs, and scratching is prevalent too.
Check out the hit songs: "Privilege", "Drive", "Stellar", and "Pardon Me", but really, this is the best of their albums from start to finish. I think there are only two songs I don't care for.
"Pardon Me" is one of my favorite songs of the late 90s. To me, that song is the best that Incubus has written.
Make Yourself.......2007-05-03
This album is great. Awesome music...cool to hear Incubus still scratching on their albums...they kind of lost that in the newest albums,

An Incubus lovers dream come true.......2007-02-12
Of all the Incubus albums released, "Make Yourself" is pure genius. It is wll written and the music is what we all have come to expect from them. All in all, this is one album I would recomend any music lover have in their collection.
Thilthy and Awesome.......2007-01-18
This album is far dirtier, but not to be confused with darker, than I imagined it would be. For that I am very greatful and this album rules! However, there are other reasons this is great. Sure, I love the song Make Yourself, but there are other sides of this, too. There is no song quite as thrashing as Megalomaniac here but there is also no song as lame as Circles here. What it does have is thooughtful hits like Drive. It also has weird techno-style artwork, sweet turntable action (especially in it's own scratch track Battle...), an infectious voice, some dirty lyrics, and singable lyrics like "you better not blink or breathe cuz you never know what's commin' around the bend". Most of all, more lively than the follow-up to this (Morning View).
Catchy CD, but it has its downsides.......2006-11-06
Im more of the person who reviews it based on letter grades, so....
Privilege - A
Great way to open a CD. More of a SCIENCE song than the steriotypical new Incubus.
Nowhere Fast - A-
One of the first Incubus songs I'd ever heard. Always caught onto me. Great Bridge and Drums
Consequence - B-
Maybe my least favorite song on the CD. Guitar part bugs the crap outa me.
The Warmth - B+
Sick song. Adds a sort of dark side to the CD.
When it Comes - B
A pretty cool song, but it isnt the kind of song that i choose to listen to. I let it slide in with the CD
Stellar - A
I hated this song at first, but I have really changed my mine since. Guitar part is impossible as heck to play, and it just has a cool rhythm to it.
Make Yourself - A-
This was the song that got me to like this CD. It was the first one I listened to, and its just a cool song.
Drive - B
Overplayed. It's a good song and all, but it just gets boring.
Clean - B
Another one of those songs that just never caught onto me. Its ok though.
Battlestar Scralatchtica - B+
A Great jam song. Amazing scratching by Kilmore.
I Miss You - B
Blah. Soft side of Incubus that bores me.
Pardon Me - B
One of my least favorites for some reason. This song is so much better played live and acoustic, but it just isnt that good on the CD.
When it Comes - A+
Favorite song on the CD. Hard rock song with great lyrics.
Overall, good CD

an oldy but a goody.......2006-10-07
I have had this album for a good while now and it never bores me, its chirpy, well written, and extremely catchy, not being a particular fan of pop this certainly proves to me that when mixed with a little post hardcore definitely worth a earwig. Although the album sounds bouncy and punky the lyrics are pretty dark and brutal at times and well sang with an occasional scream to back them up. The guitaring is fast and technical, and full of unusual timing. There is a great variety of tracks from hardcore to acoustic to plain old punk but all made very experimentally great use of synth, and keyboards. The great thing about this album is I find myself singing the words to myself randomly even after not listening to it for several months. This album is power pop at its best, if you are thinking of exploring this band I recommend this album rather than the highly disappointing "train wreck". Check these guys out but be warned these songs are real, real catchy.
mind blowing album..........2006-06-21
This is one of the best albums of all time.
If you don't agree you need to listen to it again.
Buy this album immediately.
Just another in this dime-a-dozen genre.......2006-01-29
First off, I would like to state that Boys Night Out is not emo, screamo or whatever play off of emo you can think of. They are simply alternative rock, pop-punk at best. Thanks to MTV, everyone and their brother now think that any band that sings soft lyrics with punk-influenced guitar riffs is emo, and anyone that screams is screamo. This is 2006 emo/screamo died 10 years ago! If you want real emo, check out Rites of Spring or Moss Icon. Both of those bands have the title of the first emo band, depending on who you talk to. Also visit www.fourfa.com for an explanation of what emo really is.
Now about Boys Night Out. Their first album featured lots of screaming, and not much singing. This album is a total reverse of it with more singing and alot less screaming. To me they are exactly the same as Fall Out Boy, except with lyrics that you can understand. Same pop influeced punkish guitar riffs and same song structure except with a better singer and better lyrics.
Do yourself a favor and stop listening to most of the music thats on MTV. If you just have to buy this album because your best friend says to, or all the cool kids have it, buy it used.
Boys Night Out Debuts at High Performance.......2005-07-10
First of all "A torrid Love Affair" is one of the best written emo/screamo songs of all time. This cd is a great follow up to BB&BK. "I GOt Punched in the Nose" is a great opener with catchy lyrics and guitar. "Hold on Tightly" is another great lyrical song with a electrical sound. "The subleties that make..." is prob one of the most catchy songs on the cd."Anatomy of the Journey" is an amazing song that starts off with dark screaming and goes into detail to explain following the sounds of a bullet to a murder scene. Boys Night Out combines screaming and singing better than any other band Ive heard. Go Pick UP MYS now.
New Emo.......2005-06-28
Emo has a certain number of allstars. Ya know the ones that make the genre. Well Boys Night Out is the next one. Its an amazing CD that features the edge that not many others provide, with drawn out yells an actually meaningful lyrics. This is for the fans that want something to move to not cry to.

then i just cant go wrong..........2005-10-10
its very hard to come across a CD these days that you like EVERY song on the CD, well...this is one of those little gems
1. Make Yourself At Home 5/5: Opens beautifuly and the lyrics and vocals and guitar and music just blow me away! one of my favorite songs of ALL time!
2. Selective 4.5/5: The lyrics are great! the guitar is amazing and the message that gets across with this is just incredible! "sharpen your over acting skills/to cut thru the tension/mark our words with confidence/selective attention"
3. Playing Favorites 5/5: i ADORE this song! i cannot get the chorus out of my head! "im sure u always feel my eyes on u/but i hope that u will never feel unwanted/wait for me to move out west/its ok if u dont/i hope u know ur my favorite thing/about the west coast" LOVE IT! the guitar and vocals are gorgeous!
4. The Nightlife 4/5: Good song, I like the lyrics a lot and the guitar is very nice
5. The Best Of Me 5/5: The lyrics are astonishing! the flow and rythme are amazing and the guitar is beautiful! "here we lay again/on 2 serarate beds/riding phone lines/to meet familiar voices/or pictures drawn from memories/we refelct on miscommunications/and missunderstandings and missing eachother/too much to have had let go"
6. Lasting Impressions 6/5: Pretty much the reason i bought this CD. The lyrics are AMAZING and i have such a history with this song and what was going on in my life at the time when i 1st heard it, so that could be why im so in love it, but its a favorite! "lets show em what we're made of/we'll show up in our outfits we planned ahead/to meet the qualifications for a special occassion/today is our day" and "youve made a lasting impression/and if it doesnt feel right/then i just cant go wrong/ive been sleeping with the lights on/so if i wake in the night/ur picture is clearly in sight" beautiful!
this CD, altho short, is undeiably gorgeous! in every aspect from the lyrics to the vocals to the guitar to the other music! everything out this CD and band is just mind blowing! one of the best CDs i own!
Great Cd.......2004-10-17
This is a really sweet cd, and i would really encourage you to buy it. It features the all popular "Best of Me", along with 5 other never before released songs all of which are aucoustic. They are absolutly amazing songs, especially "Night Life" and "Lasting impressions". I have listened to this cd more times than I can count, and i still love it. It also comes with 2 videos of previously unreleased songs. If you like this band I would suggest that you also check out Oasis, another very good band.
a good album for fans.......2004-06-24
The Starting Line is one of my favorite groups, and this cd was something that i think was deffinately worth getting. In the inside of the cd, lead singer Kenny explains how he made the cd to keep in touch with the fans while they were working on a new cd, and i think that this cd was a perfect way of doing that. They give you songs about touring, an old song from their last cd,and a new song thats going to be on the new cd, which sounds awesome. The only problem with the cd is that the videos have bad audio, so you cant hear anything, but its fun to watch them perform.
After the amazing Say It Like You Mean It, TSL does it again.......2004-04-05
Today, saying you like emo is almost as embarrassing as saying you like pop-punk which is almost as embarrassing as saying you like pop. Although, The Starting Line's Make Yourself At Home [EP] is truly something special. If you have never heard of The Starting Line you may want to know what other bands they sound like. Well, I could list a few bands, but that wouldn't do them justice because I think they sound more mature and write better lyrics than most of the bands they are categorized with. The EP starts off with the title track Make Yourself At Home 7.5/10. It is a good song and encompasses so much emotion that is unifying of all TSL (The Starting Line) songs. Selective 8.0/10 is a bit more fun-loving with a slightly faster tempo, a nice change from a opening song that isn't much better than par. Playing Favorites 8.0/10. This was the first song I heard, before buying the album. It reminds any TSL fan of the album Say It Like You Mean It but with some hidden sense of growth. The Night Life 8.5/10 is one of the best songs on this EP, flows so nicely, any TSL fan won't be able to help but like this song! The Best of Me 9.5/10 you may recognize from the Say It Like You Mean It album, but the difference is this is acoustic (not truly acoustic, but more acoustic than the other version). What can I say? This song is extremely good in the way that there is so much urgency of hoping for good things in Ken Vasoli's voice, it's so strong you won't be able but to get sucked in and allow your past experiences to burst through and connect to the lyrics and harmonies of this song. Finally the EP ends with Lasting Impressions 9.5/10, now I admit I wouldn't normally rate this song as high as 9.5, but the song is brilliantly placed and has some mysterious way of encapsulating the whole EP, it makes you want to say, "No! Don't leave me, I'm not done with you TSL" and by the end of the song the urge to press "play" again is strong!
If you like this EP don't forget to check out Say It Like You Mean It.
Best E.P Album EVER!.......2004-03-06
I am a Big Yellowcard/The Starting Line Fan and really The Starting line took me in when they were called "Sunday Drive" but ever since then their songs just takes my emontions out of me and just cry and really I so recomand you to buy this album but What i am surprized about that the Song "Piano" Isnt on here cause I bought their Euro Album and it's good and have the same songs on here except for "Piano" but they should closed it off with that.
TSL Forever!

Just Listen to It!.......2004-03-11
As a longtime fan of Incubus and also a classical music wonk, I had to buy this CD. I read the reviews of this album after I listened to it all the way through about twice and fell in love, but the reviews disappointed me. Obviously, people have a problem with changing what are already good songs. Also, it seems like most of the reviewers aren't listening hard enough, as all of the best songs are very easily recognizable. The only misses on this CD, the Morning View songs, frankly weren't that great to begin with. The Warmth is the best track here, becuase the slightly ominous tune was captured perfectly by strings. Make Yourself and Drive are also very good. With the exception of the Morning View songs, the composer chose the songs to reproduce with a great amount of consideration, because only the melodic Make Yourself tunes translate into classical. No one would have enjoyed a string version of Certain Shade of Green or Hilikus. All in all, a great buy, but if you don't like classical or if you only began listening to Incubus with the Morning View Sessions, then don't bother, because you just won't appreciate it.
Expected more!.......2004-01-04
As a big Incubus fan and a violinist, I thought this CD had the potential to be fabulous. I will say that you can recognize most of the songs, and it is a peaceful, tranquil way to listen to Incubus. However, often the strings sound similar to tuning instruments in an Elementary School orchestra (boy does that take me back!). Perhaps they could have selected more experienced artists, because the Incubus songs are so beautiful.
soo bad.......2003-11-25
this is the worst version of any incubus song, even my cat could wail an incubus song better than this. even if i ever did recognize any not of this as being an incubus song, its still crap. Most of this CD is an unrecognizable slice of junk. Buy a proper INCUBUS cd!
HOLY ka-NOLY! hot DANCER SPA-coal-EE!!!.......2003-09-27
very well done. musically creative. if you truely apriciate incubus, and you also appriciate the classical music. this album was put together very well. its a good album to relax to while driving and you just want to be calm.or sleeping to or whatever.
you can TOTALLY tell what songs are what. and after listening to this album, you will have a new look on incubus and there creativity. but seriously...i know music. and this is good and well thought out music. ---chuck says "enjoy incubus!"
absolutely beautiful.........2003-08-12
I just got this cd today. I've already listened to it 3 times. All I can say is it's amazing.. I'm a huge fan of Incubus and when I first heard this I was in shock on how amazing this quartet could play.Just get it.. you won't be let down

Album Description
Plasticland, once hailed as the true future of psychedelic music, released several great albums of acid-drenched, neo psychedelic, mod rock. Formed in 1980 and based in Milwaukee, Plasticland were armed with a Mellotron, fuzzboxes and a mission, delivering the U.S. `80s underground a much-needed shot of Small Faces, Who, Pretty Things and Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, all topped off with pop smarts and delivered with style. Not just another retro outfit, when the definitive history of psychedelic music is written, you can bet Plasticland will be up there alongside the pioneers of the genre because they had the vision, daring, humor and imagination to take their music forward.
Customer Reviews:
Too good for words!.......2006-05-16
I'll try to convey in words just how good this is...If you like any of the more cerebral and/or danceable stuff from the Nuggets compilations (of which Plasticland makes an appearance on Children of Nuggets) or just want to have the perfect soundtrack for your all night psych/rock/garage extravaganza...don't you dare hesitate to purchase this disc. How this is not rocketing up the charts is beyond explanation. Sure not every great song of their's is on this, but that would requirre a box set. Here's hoping a deluxe edition of this will come out with a full color booklet showing these gents in all of their sartorial splendor.
At Last.......2006-05-03
Plasticland were one of the most amazing psychedelic pop bands of any era. While they were often compared to 60's pioneers like Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd and the Pretty Things, Plasticland took that trip further than anyone could have imagined. Though rooted in the 60's, Plasticland was a band of the 1980's and never succumbed to the excesses of prog rock and endless meandering jam sessions. Every song is a tightly constucted gem fiercely executed in a style as sharp as any punk rock band. It's great to see them finally get their due with this well selected compilation of their best tracks. The sound quality far exceeds that of the 80's era CD releases. The liner notes by Nigel Cross are informative and entertaining. The packaging is first rate. Get this CD.

Brilliant down-home bluegrass.......2005-05-16
Comprising David Harvey (mandolin and guitar), his wife Jill (rhythm guitar) and her sister Jill Snider (bass), Wild and blue made just two albums and some Christmas songs before returning to the obscurity from which they never really emerged. On this album, the guest musicians are Jim Britton (banjo), Bobby Hicks (fiddle) and Gene Wootton (dobro). Kenny Malone plays drums on two tracks (River of tears, You were only fooling). Mark Howard plays guitar on two tracks (Mountain memories, You must come in at the door).
The album contains two instrumentals (Leaving Gatesville, High country breakdown) , two tracks featuring David as lead singer (Sooner or later, Will you travel down this road with me) and two featuring Jill as lead singer (Sundown and sorrow, Mountain memories). The remaining six tracks feature Jan as lead singer. On the vocal tracks, the two who aren't lead singer normally provide harmony backup to the lead singer.
The songs include several covers but they are all fairly obscure - however, they are all wonderful. Perhaps the least obscure song is When someone wants to leave, a song from Dolly Parton's original Jolene album. That album featured two country number one hits (Jolene, I will always love you) and has been re-issued on CD several times, so plenty of people will know the song.
This is bluegrass as it should be - bright and upbeat. If you enjoy bluegrass music, don't ignore Wild and Blue.
Hard driving bluegrass.......1999-07-23
This CD warms you with the wonderful title cut, and brings you on a great bluegrass jouney. I didnt care much for River of Tears and Quit While I'm behind, but Leaving Gatesville, Sooner or Later, and the bluesy finale of You must Come in at the Door, are all wonderful songs. I give it a definite rerecommendation.

The one CD I wore the back off of.......2006-09-10
If you were to ask me, "What CD has left the biggest impression on you over the years?" I would say quite simply, Incubus' Make Yourself. Make Yourself is one of the most diverse pieces of mainstream rock music I've ever heard. Songs such as Make Yourself and Out From Under brings all the intensity you could imagine this band has to the table. Songs such as Privilege and Pardon Me are hard driving rock songs that are completely memorable. Then there's songs such as The Warmth and I Miss You that are just so emotional and carry such a strong message that it's hard not to be a little bit touched. That's why Incubus has remained at the front of my favorites list.
Much has been said about Brand Boyd. Far and away he's my personal favorite vocalist. His vocals are so diverse and he doesn't shy away from experimenting. His lyrics are excellent. Sometimes inspirational, sometimes spiteful, and other times just weird, but you cannot deny he has talent. This band doesn't end at Brandon though. Mike Einzinger definitely knows his way around a guitar. He's also gotten progressively better with each further release. Dirk Lance (now departed) was at his peak on previous releases because he was more upfront but he's still there on Make Yourself and he still plays great. Jose Pasillas II is a great drummer. While not the best you'll ever hear he can hold his own. And then there's Chris Kilmore. He's been less and less a big part of the band since this CD but on here he really does his thing and does it well. Where turntables could overcrowd a song and become bland, Kilmore keeps them tasteful.
In my eyes this is the perfect example of a balanced CD. You have your heavy stuff, you've got the hard/melodic, and then you've got a few ballad-esque songs sprinkled in for good measures. Seeing as how I love all aspects of this band I can't single one type of song out that they play and say that's their best. I like the hard/melodic songs the best but to see them drop all the other types would be a bad decision on their part. Sure the slow sing-along Drive got them popular in the mainstream but songs like Pardon Me and more recently Megalomaniac have kept them relevent. You can't pin Incubus to one type of song, and one listen to Make Yourself is sure to prove that.
Seeing as how this is the Tour Edition, there is a tremendous extra for fans. That being a bonus acoustic CD. Granted it's only four songs and any fan has surely heard at least once. The first three tracks, Pardon Me, Stellar, and Make Yourself actually showed up on When Incubus Attacks Vol. I. And the orchestral live version of Drive is a solid track, much like the original.
My favorite songs are Privilege, The Warmth, Clean, I Miss You, and Pardon Me. Collectors are sure to find more value in this than the casual fan, but that's not to say a casual fan should look this over. If you've yet to buy Make Yourself than making an effort to find this would be a good decision. You get to see that Incubus is good whether they're playing heavy or acoustic. Other than the bonus disc though, nothing is changed. The booklet is the same, the back is the same (aside from the bonus disc part), nothing different. Definitely worth it though.
