Hard Music Indie Comp '96

Editorial Reviews
Art Thomas, This is Owen & Friends, #3, Sept 1996
The "Hard Rock Indie Comp '96" features eight of the best orginal bands that Woodstock and area has to offer. All sixteen of the tracks have been recorded very well, and showcase each band at thier best. Angerkain are loud and energetic. Storm Without Cease are Tillsonburg's answer to Rage Against The Machine. Spitfunnel, Brownwater, Relik, and Mr. Machete churn out thier different and interesting styles of alternative rock. Acid Mud Flower from London, grace us with thier brand of orginal Black Sabbath inspired rock. And Owen, probably the best known band on this compilation, offer two brand new tracks that are as different from each other as night and day. Their first tune, "Surreal" is a soft rocker that gets real hard in the chorus, and shows that Owen has a great range of sounds. The next tune of thiers, "Smalltown", has been a live staple for a year now, and this rocker always gets the mosh pits going. These were the only two songs that Owen ever commited to CD. Shame.

Album Description
The "Hard Rock Indie Comp '96" is comprised of eight Woodstock (Ontario, Canada) and area bands each performing two original songs. The CD was originally released in Woodstock in 1996, but because of popular demand is being reissued in the year 2000. The CD release party was held on August 24th 1996 in Port Burwell, ON, with all eight bands playing live. Most of the bands that appeared on this CD are still performing in the Woodstock area today. However, this CD is the only place they have recorded material, the reason why the disk is still popular after over three years.

Southwestern Ontario is a hotbed of great local talent, and this CD proves why. The CD, "Hard Music Indie Comp '96" was put together by Tillsonburg Ontario's "Angerkain", who invited seven of thier peers and friends to participate in the project. The music is interesting and varied, going from a Rage Against The Machine style band, "Storm Without Cease" to the softer pop rocks sounds of Woodstock's Owen, led by Thomas Ryerson. Even Owen's two contributions, "Surreal" and "Smalltown" are different in thier sounds. Surreal has a dreamy pop-rock feel, while Smalltown is a straight in your face FM rocker. Angerkain's 2 tracks are excellent, as are Mr. Machete's. One famous name on this disc is Acid Mud Flower, another Woodstock band now based in London. Thier 2 songs are hopefully going to end up on thier new CD, "Rock Dinosaur". I'm a great fan of all 8 of the bands on this disc, tho' I'm very partial to the several I mentioned. The disc is a very good investment to anyone who wants to open thier musical mind! Welcome to Ontario, Canada, we know how to rock with the best!
