Laced with nostalgia of the 1980s, the motion picture The Wood hit theaters a decade later touted as a feel-good, then-and-now movie. The accompanying soundtrack, however, relies heavily on late-1990s talent and makes only three short trips back to the '80s. Classic tracks such as Whodini's "Freaks Come Out at Night" and 1987's beatbox-heavy "Make the Music with Your Mouth Biz" leaves listeners yearning for additional musical flashbacks. The Wood's more up-to-date sound is handled by DMX, R. Kelly, the Roots, Outkast, and Mystikal. Balanced with both hip-hop and R&B, the soundtrack is best summed up by Ahmad's smooth "Back in the Day (Remix)," which reveals: "Some days I sit and wish I was a kid again." --Celine Wong

4 out of 5 stars dont knock the cd because of one song.......2007-01-19

yes, i love the Teddy P. song as well, and no its not on there. do some research before buying a cd people. lots of songs are not on this cd. i think most people are part of an older generation that appreciate real love songs, im...coughs.. 29 and teddy pendergrass, lenny williams etc can sing what true love songs should sound like. all im saying is dont down this cd because one song isnt on there. i wanted this song as well and just downloaded it on I-tunes for 99 cents instead of buying this whole cd. took me 2 seconds to google this cd and check for teddy p.

1 out of 5 stars Shortchanged.......2007-01-13

The one song I wanted to hear was in the movie. It was a song by Teddy Pendergrass and it was cut out for some reason. The rest of the music was somehow connected to a rap group who did not perform many songs in the movie. It was a waste of cash.

1 out of 5 stars don't waste your money .......2005-08-06

The only good songs are the ones by the late grat Luther Vandross( if this world were mine), back in the day, and i wannna know. the teddy pendergrass song( you're my latest greatest inspiration)-you know the one played when taye diggs and lisaraye were married or something-wasn't even included in the soundtrack. BOO!!

2 out of 5 stars it was just Aight.......2004-02-09

this Soundtrack had cuts from R.kelly,The Roots,Outkast,&other folks along with Classics from back in the day but overall Ahmad stole the soundtrack.other than that not much to really speak on.it was just aight to me.still dig the film though.

3 out of 5 stars Name that tune..........2003-10-25

...and the artist who recorded it. I'm talking about the tune that plays (I think) when the couple are getting toasted, or when they are exchanging vows. Always liked that song. I think the chorus keeps saying "Higher and higher..." or something like that. Don't think I heard it on this collection.

This is a good CD to play at dance parties in spiral mode with other CDs. Adds some techno-funk to the atmosphere creating periodic waves of energy in the guests.

4 out of 5 stars The One Great song Makes the difference.......2006-10-05

The First song in the CD makes a great difference
without it the CD would not be a 4 star.
The other songs are good just not as original.
Tip check out the video of this first song "Satisfaction"
Its going to be worth your time dowloading it and watching it.

If the 66 tracks served up on the four-disc Citizen Steely Dan are more Fagen/Becker than you're in the market for, but the 14 on A Decade of Steely Dan feel skimpy, Showbiz Kids should suffice. Presenting 33 hits of both the AM and FM varieties from 1972 through 1980, the two-disc retrospective provides a reasonably thorough overview for the discerning (if not obsessive) Dan fan. However, given that the deadpan duo sweated the details when assembling their intricate LPs, a fair case can be made that, if the likes of "Dirty Work" or "Don't Take Me Alive" or "Deacon Blues" (to select but three delightfully representative tracks found here) capture one's fancy, the entire remastered, annotated collection beckons one title at a time. For a solid sampling of these Babylon brothers, however, Showbiz Kids delivers the goods. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Steely Dan Showbiz Kids.......2007-06-27

Steely Dan classics from 1972-1980. A must have for those who appreciate Steely Dan.

5 out of 5 stars The Best 2-Disc Compilation of the Dan That is Out There! Good Sound Quality Too!.......2006-12-10

This is by far the best 2-disc retrospective of the brilliant Dan, a band frequently underrated and overlooked but finally achieving long overdue recognition with the Grammy for Album of the Year for "Two Against Nature." Although none of the tracks from that album is on this album, for those who only just became fans because of that album and now want to go back and find out more, this is the right place to come to as all the great tracks from all the previous albums are here on these 2-discs. Where "Gold" was the best single disc retrospective of the band, "Showbiz Kids" gives a more complete picture and is really all you need to give you an accurate indication of how great this band is. The remastering is good but not great and yet the sound quality is still a lot better than other allegedly remastered discs that I've heard out there. There is not a single weak track on these two discs. The only down side for me is that the brilliant "Green Earings" isn't included and the version of "Bodhisattva" is the studio version and not the excellent live version that's on "Gold". For fans of intelligent, near perfect pop and jazz/rock, you've come to the right place. Deserved members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and this album shows you why. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Discover the magic that is..STEELY DAN!.......2006-11-02

What a top-notch collection from a truly original band. If you at least have a mild appreciation for Steely Dan, pick up this double cd set, and you just might become a Dan-Fan for life.
You might even say to yourself...I didn't KNOW they did THAT song!.
All are gems.
A great representation of this band's amazing career(before Two Against nature)
A must have. Seriously.

1 out of 5 stars NOT HAPPY WITH AMAZON REGARDING THIS ALBUM.......2006-10-12

When I saw that this item was for sale on Amazon, I instantly put it in my shopping cart....that was in August. After several emails indicating a delay, I finally cancelled my order today (10/11/06). It should not take two months to get a cd.

5 out of 5 stars The absolute best Steely Dan compilation.......2006-06-30

Prior to purchasing this CD I had never owned any of their CDs. Their music was part of the soundtrack of my teenage years, but I now have a better appreciation of their musical creativity and pure song-writing talent. This is the perfect 2-CD set for really getting to know what Steely Dan is about. I can't think of anything they left out of this set. The name speaks for itself.

    5 out of 5 stars The Sea and Cake's best. A Post-Rock masterpiece........2003-05-16

Many TSAC listeners seperate the band's career into two segments: pre and post-Fawn. And I would definitely agree. While their work on The Fawn and later albums is undeniably TSAC in its sound, it is remarkably different than their first three albums. For my money, The Biz is the best of the pre-Fawn era.

Here they are still the guitar driven, slightly edgy band they were on their first release. The album flows well and has a cohesive "sound", just like most of TSAC's albums. But the tunes on this album seem to stick in your mind, demanding to be listened to again and again. The guitar work on this album is superb as are the bass and drum work. All very solid. Prekops vocals also reach a high point here, before he moved totally into the breathy vocals of their later albums.

For the uninitiated, this is probably the best way to get into TSAC. Put yourself in a "I'll try anything" mood and pop this album in. You won't be disappointed.

Highlights here include the title track, The Kiss (with the beautiful and trippy fade out finishing the song), Escort and The Transaction.

5 out of 5 stars sea and cake- the biz.......2003-02-28

there aren't too many records that sweep you off your feet like this, make you smile when you put them on for the very first time...just a handful. you get that "ahh" feeling and lean back, and you breathe in the oxygen around you and things are perfect. it's just a very rare thing, a phenomenon...records just don't do that too much. this record can be anything and everything, it's so versatile and well-put together. it's new everytime you hear it, clean and fresh, never fails to keep you happy. it's a perfect marketing scam, because once you finish listening, you wish you had more sea and cake records...but you don't. still, in the middle of "darkest night", there's no need for worry, as everything in the world finally sounds and feels completely in tune.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2002-07-31

This is the most fully realized album The Sea and Cake ever released, and captures them at a time when the jazz & prog-rock inspired Chicago scene had just reached a high & mighty plateau. The intense rhythmic complexity of John McEntire's percussion, alongside the relaxed vocal tones of Sam Prekop, go down as smooth as ice cream on a hot summer's night. Yet The Biz defies easy listening. This album will engulf and activate you, as it plays out tensions as fundamental as your own struggle to survive. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars Easy, fun, and catchy. For a change!.......2001-08-27

Top jazzy-indie with a modern rock edge - believe me this is fun stuff. Every track is VERY memorable, and the four minute instrumental The Escort is an enjoyable romp with some nifty riffs. Sam Prekop's relaxed vocals - more understandable here than on newer Sea and Cake efforts - compliment the tracks nicely, as do the occasional usage of wibbly electronics (only occasional mind, which is why latter releases have gone downhill - to much arsing about with style and effects!). One negative point is For Minor Sky - far too heavy by comparison (to the rest) and IMHO hasn't stood up to such repeated listening. A shame since I find going through the rest of The Biz to be So Darned Enjoyable. :) Make sure this is the album you start with if you haven't heard these guys yet!

5 out of 5 stars some obnoxously chill music..........2001-01-27

These guys just put you in a good mood. And The Biz is definatly one of their best albums. This record is probablly their best stuff from when they were mainly just guitar/bass/drums/and singing. The songs are all superbly written, and John McEntire provides some of the best beats of any drummer I've ever heard, just listen to the drumming on track #7, "An Assasin", and tell me that's not one of the tighest beats you've ever heard on a drumset...

5 out of 5 stars Give It Up For The Diabolical MC: Biz Markie!.......2007-01-14

All self-respecting MC's should own a copy of these 2 east coast hip hop staples. Take listen to any notable hip hop or r & b release in the 90's and you'll hear snippets of this classic, specifically Mary J. Blige, A Tribe Called Quest and Bad Boy releases. Vapors is the first lesson I ever learned about haters and when you make the come up. Like 2pac said: " A lot of us fatherless boys listened to the rappers of our day as father figures." Pac named LL, Kane, and Cube as his father figures. Biz Markie certainly goes on that list as well.

5 out of 5 stars Biz in Harmony.......2002-05-03

These two cds were Biz at his best. Goin' Off featuring the vastly underrated TJ Swan and Biz Never Sleeps perfectly captures the Emmazaa-A-R-KIE reaching his zenith. My Man Rich, Biz in Harmony, Things Get Easier, Make the Music, Albee Square Mall, etc. There's probably only two songs maximum that didn't age well between the two LPs. I love all of the monikers that he calls himself on Never Sleeps. To this day I haven't been able to decipher them all. I'd remembered Goin' Off as a classic but for some reason had forgotten about the hidden treasure that was Never Sleeps. It somehow got overlooked during the all Gangsta or all Daisy age of hip-hop. I had to cop this one as soon as I spotted it. A hall of fame cd for a hall of fame artist.

5 out of 5 stars Biz has the masta plan.......2002-04-22

Who else can rhyme about takin' a dump? Who else can say "On a crack mission, no type of ambition, make blunts disappear betta than a magician?"

Biz is hands-down the best rapper to ever live. "up ya nose wit a rubba hose and everybody knows that ya style is olda than my gramma's clothes."

      Unbe-freakin-lievable.

5 out of 5 stars man, if u ain't up on biz yet, you betta cop this cd!.......2002-02-28

this is a phat collection to get, its 2 of biz's classic albums for the price of one! biz is dope! listen to biz markie if u like tight rymes, good beats.... get the other 2 albums "i neef a haircut" and "all samples cleared" after you get this 2 album comp. then get some slick rick cd's, then we can talk

5 out of 5 stars Nobody Beats The Biz.......2001-09-29

This is a great find! Biz Markie is the best Old-School rapper who obviously influenced Biggie Smalls, the best rapper since The Biz. If you are a lyricist looking for inspiration, look no further. Biz rymes vague words to express himself, not worring about everything ryming perfectly and focusing on the flow of things. This is a breath of fresh air in today's rap world of Cash Money, DMX, "P Diddy", and others. Biz sings about simpler things and has fun with it. The best CD next to The Roots' "Do You Want More?"

      3 out of 5 stars A thumb down.......2001-02-14

Yes,musicians are great, repertoire is great BUT I just can't warm up to Helen Humes voice. She reminds me too much of the young,Chick Webb - era Ella Fitzgerald, all girly, squeeky clean and "lovable".That particular type of voice, with its "freshness and cleanniness" is simply unlistenable to me,it says volumes about possesor of the voice AND always frozen smile on the face.Listening good reviews I bought not one but two Helen humes albums and still after several months I cannot find any special magic about her, except the fact that I find her "cuteness" very annoying. Some people find her good, but I need a character behind the voice and this woman sounds too much like young Ella (whom I never liked in the first place, lack of personality being the reason).Perhaps this similarity was the reason why Humes never broke really big and never had status of other great jazz legends. The only exception on the album would be "Bill" from "Showboat" which unexpectedly,Humes sing with some emotions, everything else sound forced to me.

      5 out of 5 stars Damn, that's good!.......2000-04-06

If you want music that you can't help but move to, this is it. I thought Dinah Washington was the Top Bannana, with Billie Holiday right beside her, but I have now added Helen Humes to the list. They just don't make em like this any more! True quality...true feel good music! Heaven has got to be a rockin' place.

5 out of 5 stars Every LP Miss Humes ever recorded is worth listening to........1999-11-10

Her 1st LP for OJC(her best was Songs I Like To Sing) out of three, is a great jazz session well worth picking up. She is one of the few artists like Anita O'Day(on Verve), you know if her name is on the cover it's worth buying. Highlights include "Amung My Suvineers" and "Bill Bailey."
