DG has put together a fascinating compilation of Segovia's art that reminds us what a protean figure he was. Segovia single-handedly put the instrument on the map by making classical guitar concerts popular events, broadening the instrument's repertory through commissions and transcriptions, and convincing even doubters that it could be a vehicle for serious music. He's heard here in brief pieces recorded between 1952 and 1969. Even in those made when he was well into his 70s, his fingers remain nimble and interpretations lively. Listening straight through, one hears many all-time Segovia favorites as Turina's Sevillana and Albeniz's Asturias and Zambra Granadina and renews appreciation for path-breaking composers like Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote extensively for Segovia and his Capriccio diabolico and Tonadilla are pieces of real substance. Disc two is largely made up transcriptions and it's amazing how well so many of them work on the guitar, at least under Segovia's magic fingers. Thus the transformations of Bach's violin music and even a Chopin Prelude sound idiomatic, and the gorgeous melodies of the Canzonetta from Mendelssohn's Op. 12 String Quartet are irresistible here. An entrancing set. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars A Man and His Art - Magnificently Captured.......2007-04-06

This 2-CD set produced by Deutche Grammmophon and first released in 2002 is one set of the hundreds that could have been or the dozens that actually have been made and sold successfully all over the world. The exceptional feature of this particular collection is not, of course, the performer. Quite to the contrary, the miraculous consistency of stylings and performance are amongst the most remarkable aspects of the man who was, arguably, the 20th Centry's virtuoso supreme of the classical guitar, Andres Segovia (1893-1987.) Rather, it is the collection itself - the pieces chosen to be produced on this one set - this, to steal a German word, gestalt. While his style did not remain constant throughout his long life and career, by the time he had developed his most masterful skills that included doing his own arrangements - the era represented on this particular set (1951-1960) - his playing had become completely his own - unchallenged and unmatched by even other clearly great guitarists with whom he shared this era.

There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, John Dowland, Manuel de Falla, Cesar Franke, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Edvard Grieg, George Frederic Handel, Felix Mendelsohn, Frederico Moreno Torroba, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolo Paganini, Felipe Pedrell, Manuel Ponce, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Albert Roussel, Domenico Scarlatti, Alexander Scriabin, Segovia's own composition of Estudio sin luz, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Joaquin Turina and Heitor Villa-Lobos. A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.

Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.

EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT ANDRES SEGOVIA WAS/IS THE WORLD'S GREATEST CLASSICAL GUITAR PLAYER. THIS CD IS A COMPILATION OF HIS RECORDINGS FROM THE THE EARLY 50'S TO THE LATE 60'S. HIS GUITAR MASTERY IS UNQUESTIONED AND HE IS AN INSPIRATION. I WISH I COULD PLAY GUITAR LIKE ANDRES SEGOVIA (BUT I CAN'T AND I NEVER WILL!).

4 out of 5 stars X-cellent.......2003-04-20

I don't really think of this as an X-games sampler, as much as I do just a great early 90's alt/metal collection. It's pretty lengthy at 17 tracks, and includes alt/metal classics from Primus, Ministry, Pepper's, Beastie's, Korn, Kravitz, Faith no More, and a great House of Pain remix. The remaining stuff is all mostly good too. Volume 3 isn't bad either with Pantera, 311, and Crystal Method, but it's not as sweet as this is. So if your throwing a party with all your little X buddies, and they're at least over 19, this should be the only cd you need.

4 out of 5 stars Cool editing........2000-06-29

That's a weird title, you might think. But just listen to the end of "Are You Gonna Go My Way" by Lenny Kravitz. The original version ends with a drum and guitar hit. On this album, the hit is provided by Sepultura with their jungle-drumming and it sounds so cool! The album is full of fun little things like this that fans of the original -structure songs will appreciate (or despise, I guess). But hey, if you want the studio-recorded endings to the songs, you might want to buy the individual albums, because there are a lot of great bands on this album. For you people that like 80's pop, there is a VERY different version of Soft Cell's "Tainted Love." It doesn't have that electronic beeping in it though. Overall, this is a pretty heavy album and isn't for everyone. But for those who appreciate creative noise-making, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better compilation.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most quality compliations I have ever heard.......1998-12-16

This CD combines a great mixture of Hard Rock from older, established bands like Megadeth, and newer bands like KORN. A definite 5 Star.

5 out of 5 stars The best soundtrack ever written.......1998-10-15

This is a must buy for all of the music fans out there this cd is a combination of one hit wonders to yet to be famous artists such as the beastie boys and the goo goo dolls. Most of the songs on this cd were big hits or should've been big hits one of the best cds that i own(and I own a lot of good cds). If you are going to buy one of the x-games soundtracks this is the one to buy

as a drummer myself I think Scott Travis is as solid a rock drummer as there is but I gotta tell you that the guitar playing on this CD absolutely smokes! These guys tear it up at every turn and don't miss a trick. You guitarists out there, get his CD, fasten your seat belts and crank this sucker up!

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking Guitar Playing!!!.......2006-07-14

Simply put this is the greatest "live" shred guitar album ever!!Everytime I get a friend who wants to show off on guitar I whip out with this album, usually nips it in the bud.Anyways this album showcases the fastest, most precise playing you will ever hear on a live album,or just about any studio album for that matter.Paul and Bruce are simply incredible musicians.Even after almost 20 years this album still floors me everytime I listen to it.I cant recomend it enough.!!!!Long Live Shred

5 out of 5 stars A Shred Sensation.......2005-04-05

Perfect, i have never heard anything as beautiful as this. When I found this at a neighborhood yardsale i almost defecated my pants. Jeff Martin sings like an angel. 30 seconds into Paul Gilberts electric guitar solo and i was speechless. So Racers, if you're feeling dangerous, pop this cd in and let good times roll!

5 out of 5 stars Would get 5 stars but..........2003-06-22

I've loved this band since I first discovered them back in the mid 80's. While "Extreme Volume I Live" shows the band in top form, the transfer to cd is not the best... good enough though. The playing is imaculate and all of the band's members went on to other things... Paul Gilbert of course went on to form Mr. Big and also have a successful solo career, Scott Travis went on the become Judas Priest's drummer, Jeff Martin became the drummer for Badlands, (Voodoo Highway and Dusk), and more recently the drummer w/ The Plot, (feat. Micheal Schenker-gtrs. and Pete Way- bass), John Alderete and Bruce Bouillet formed The Scream w/ John Corabi, (one time Motley Crue singer), and remain active in the music biz. Of course, all but Bruce continue to write, record, and perform as Racer X to this day. I recomend this to anyone who loves the over the top speed of light virtuosity of the late 80's and (very) early 90's when people really bothered to learn to play their instuments intstead of just using them as props. Vol. I features individual solos from each band member. This should really get 5 stars but the transfer cuts one star off... and it really isn't that bad... buy it and play it often... loud!!!

5 out of 5 stars Trazan's Day Off..........2003-05-10

I spent a good portion of my time in High School in the early 90s just trying to figure out the solo to Gone Too Far. So much I destroyed my CD player going back and forth. If you havent heard a perfectly exectuted twin lead harmony, this is the one you MUST hear. Paul and Bruce pull the most amazing LIVE guitar work I have ever heard. This along with Live Extreme Volume II are truly works of art. Its better than WRONGWAY Malmsteen's live in Leningrad.

5 out of 5 stars another 4.5 but bring up that average.......2004-09-29

Possibly the most sadly overlooked "pop" or dance album ever. If this album would have received the proper attention in the states it would have been spectacular unfortunately not. Oh well to future generations that realize the brilliance here buy this now.

    5 out of 5 stars 4.5, but it doesn't hurt to round.......2004-01-31

...and what an x-factor it is! This cd first caught my ears with "Finest Dream", featuring the ever-popular Kelis who seems to be lending her vocals to so many albums as of late, and the ever funky, always thump "You (better let me love you)" (which is my hands down favorite).

When you first put the cd in, you'll almost immediately notice that 80's flair that really makes this album the special album it is. Music should be fun, but also refreshing. This cd does both of those. Here's a selected breakdown:

"Being Nobody" - who can really hate this track? it has some great vocals from the across-the-pond group Liberty X and really sets the tone for the rest of the album. (4.5/5)

"You Used to Hold Me" - mellow, funky, winner (4.5/5)

"Walk on By" - okay here's where it gets kind of shady, song with a great beat but really REALLY lousy vocals (1/5)

"Lemon/Lime" - same vocalist from "walk on by" but the funky breakbeat groove of this track really makes the vocals tolerable (3.5/5)

"Finest Dream" - Definite party starter!! (5/5)

"You (better let me love you)" - Party continues with a guest spot from Tiga (this track is much better than tiga's much overated 'hot in herre') (5/5)

"Freak Like Me" - taking it back to the older school with a nice rework with the Sugababes (5/5)

4 out of 5 stars MASH-UP, BOOTLEG, WHATEVER YOU CALL IT - GENIUS!.......2003-09-10

I didn't want to like this CD, cause it's been so hyped by all the UK dance mags over the past few months, but now that it's finally out domestic on Astralwerks, I gotta admit, Richard X really outdid himself this time - his main technique is deceptively simple, yet complex: take a U.S. soul classic and place an 80s retro/electro-synth pop groove underneath - so we get Chaka Khan's "Ain't Nobody" set over Human League's "Being Boiled" or Thelma Houston's lost classic "You Used to Hold Me So Tight" laid over Human League's "DARE"-era "Dreams Are Made Of" etc - it shouldn't work, but it does, and like gangbusters, as most all the tracks here literally LEAP out of the speakers to make you MOVE! While not brain surgery, this works on the dancefloor AND at home, which can't be said for lots of dance music - it may be branded dance/house, but it's really imbued with a more punk-rock/electro D.I.Y. attitude fitting of the UK scene - but it's quite clear Mr. X has been listening very, very closely to his old 80's JAM&LEWIS 12"s - NOW, I hope the success of this CD might make MCA (now Universal) reconsider finally re-issuing THELMA HOUSTON's long-lost "QUALIFYNG HEAT" LP on CD - listen to the source, learn it, and learn it well!! -

3 out of 5 stars This could have been a classic.......2003-09-05

Richard X has stomped onto the music scene with some fabulous songs, taking artist of today and mixing new records with 80s tracks which really does work. Liberty X are featured with Being Nobody and The Sugarbabes with Freak Like Me. These are excellent dance songs and have done really well in the UK charts. The track You Used to ft Javine sounds like Janet Jackson when she first emerged and Finest Dreams ft Kelis is also another fab record. The only really standout song is You better let me Love you ft Tiga, this is like an old Human League track, Richard X is definatley a fan of the League and this track is a great tribute to them. The only let down tracks are Walk On By, Lemon/Lime and Just Friends. These compared to the rest of the album are quite dull. I was abit disappointed with the album as the songs released so far of of a high standard not leaving many to make the album seem new and refreshing. Its worth a listen though as you will either love it be bored with it.

Gary mays & Nu Era... God Bless You!! I have your first project and the CD is Great. I saw you peform in Houston for the NABJ regional conference and to all who read this review, when I tell you God came and took a seat...the anointing was heavy. What made me come to amazon.com is because a while back I lost the cd's jewel case and I decided to play #8-Nu Creature on the air.(I am also a jock for Praise 94.9 Fm, in New Orleans, LA)Least to say I got a lost of good responses. But I personally would like to say thank you because I have been blessed by your cd and am still being blessed. I am trying to figure out why you are not out and on the scenes..what do I mean? I mean like being nominated for a stellar???? I just encourage you to keep up the GOOD WORK! God is elevating you and the group. I would like to get you down to New Orleans for a concert or something..give me a holla -----cleveland@hotmail.com(make sure I can tell the message is from you)
God Bless you and Nu Era..From Brad Bradford and the Praise 94.9 Fm family.

Hey Gary, I too have had this cd for quite some time so I guess my review is a little late. While I didn't find the Kirk Franklin-esque narrations "annoying", I did feel like they were often unnecessary. The songwriting was well above average as was the music. I was so impressed by the clips on cdbaby, that I bought both Vol 1 & 2. Of course having Kim Burrell on 2 and your incredible drumming didn't hurt. I'll leave the Vol. 2 review under Vol. 2, I just wanted to encourage you as an aspiring artist myself. I read your response to the criticism you received and I felt like you were VERY gracious and you handled it in a way that gained even more of my respect. I respect people's opinions, but occasionally, we have a tendency to speak "our truth" but not in love. I actually was a little offended by the tone of some of the statements made, but I truly respect how you handled that. Keep recording man, you have a lot to offer "gospel" music. Just keep it up. If you're ever anywhere NEAR Philly, please let me know. You can email me at worthamt25@yahoo.com.

      Thanx

I have owned this cd for a little over a year now, so this review is probably overdue. Anybody that knows me, knows how much I love this group. I mean I'm a die hard fan! I'm trying to not let some of the other reviews below effect what I'm going to say. I really do love this album though. It has a lot of songs that minister to me personally as well as my friends and fellow choir members. "WE MADE IT" That is the cut, all the way. Vocals get a A+. Houston is a NEW BREED (Not just Israel....ha ha) "No Weapon" is must to listen to. Might as well just put the whole cd on repeat! "Holla Holla" Ok I had to get use to that one, a little different, but it don't even matter. Gary, you already know how much I enjoy your music and producing. I plan on taking a much anticipated roadtrip to Houston at the end of May/eary June to see and hear their 3rd recording!!! I'm so excited, I told everyone and everyone should try to come and support him. As far as the other reviews, Gary I'm just glad you prove me right when I compliment you, by understanding constructive critism from the others and being so HUMBLE about it. That's why you stand OUT from others and you are No Doubt "Set Aside!" See you soon and Blessing to all!!!

5 out of 5 stars thnx for the constuctive criticism.......2004-10-21

hello gods people, im gary mayes of gary mayes & nu era, to andrae, d hardy & c-nice, i would like to personally thnk u guys for ur honesty. the fact that u even bought the record means alot to me & my ministry. i promise to take everything that u guys said into consideration, as we prepare to record our new record . but i will say this, if my narrating caused u to miss the anointed that was/is all over this record, i really feel sorry for u. there was sumthin so strong tht n.e., myself and all of the people that participated felt during the process of this recording. if u could have been in some of the sessions, u couldnt help but feel the presence of god jehovah in the room, we actually turn a studio into a worship x-perience. but let me promise u, everything that u brought to my attention, i promise to take that and amplify it. the next record will b much better. i believe that if people can take out the time to buy & listen to the muzick that god has given u, the least u can do is listen to the things that makes them happy as well as wht made them sad. once again fellas thnx alot and i/we promise to do better. p.s. dont 4get to cop vol 2 (go tell it) i think u guys will trully enjoy it. there's a gr8 anointin' on this record as well. by the way, c-nice i would love to invite u to a concert or a rehearsal on me, i really feel bad that u missed the anointing that was and still is on the vol 1 record, so i would like to make u my special guess for our next concert & our next session. how bout it? give me a call at the office on next week (monday after 12 i'll b in the office by then) and let's talk 281 565 5442 (NuWorldMuzick Inc.). god bless u guys real good.

4 out of 5 stars Grossly underrated album.....one problem though....................2004-10-13

Gary Mayes needs to stop with the Kirk Franklin impersonation. I agree with C-Nice in the fact that Gary does talk over the singers in some of the songs and it takes away from the experience, which is sad because there are some nice tracks on here. I hate Puffy for starting that stupid trend of producers yelling and talking over the music they have produced. If you're a producer who's produced a bangin' album, great! But we don't need to hear you on HALF the album. It's really getting annoying.

Apart from that sad fact, Gary Mayes is a talented producer. From start to finish this album is a very enjoyable/anointed listen, that's if you can get past Gary's constant yappin'. I was impressed with his versatile production skills in that he covers different musical genres i.e. traditional ("Nu Creature"), R'B ("My Love For U", "Where Would I Be"), Hip-Hop ("When I Think"), even a little on the Techno/Dance music side ("I'll Serve Him).

I believe Gary Mayes has potential, and the sky is the limit for him. He's no Tonex, but if he puts his mind to it I'm sure he could probably produce music that could rival T.Bizzy himself. I just hope he finds his own identity and stop trying to mimic someone else's.

"When hanging a portrait, it is very important what frame you choose. World Domination invites us to consider melody 'portraits' from the Middle East, Azerbaijan, Africa, South America, etc. in contemporary western 'frames.' The lyric and background meld together succinctly thanks to the fact that these talented and developed artists are based in San Francisco, Vancouver, Seattle, Los Angeles and so on. They are knowledgeable both in the ethnic sounds they are bringing out and the culture they are bringing it into. This collection also works as a label sampler to the World Domination progressive world music label. Each track is off of a full-length X Dot 25/ World Domination release. Full information on the artists and source albums is provided in the full-color booklet. Among the salient cuts here are the amazing gypsy/flamenco guitar duets of Yussi & Django, masterful tabla percussion from Emma & Friends and the operatic tenor of Yaqub Zoroofchi. ~ Thomas Schulte, All Music Guide"
