5 out of 5 stars Down to earth Flamenco.......2007-05-12

The performers on this collection are the cream of the crop of grass roots Flamenco. El Loreno's voice is simply mystical. La Paquera holds in her feeling the power and pasion of Flamenco in one person. if you love Flamenco this is a must.

1 out of 5 stars This is not Gypsy Kings..........2007-05-07

This music was not at all what i expected. I was expecting a bit more fun guitar and such, but the singing is what blew it: it sounded like so much screeching to me. Played once. It hurt my ears. Now, its collecting dust.

5 out of 5 stars superb flamenco classics.......2007-03-12

If you want to hear flamenco at its very best you can't do better than to buy this CD. Manitas de Plata was the best of the flamenco guitarists of the 60's and La Paquera de Jerez was the signature female flamenco vocalist of her generation. The other artists on this CD are also the best of their times. Flamenco of our day still has technical virtuousity, but I can't help but think that something essential has been lost, something to do with the soul of this music form.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Songs.......2006-02-23

This CD is perfect CD for me. Traditional flamenco music.
I enjoy this CD a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2005-11-16

I always loved gipsy music and unfortunately it's not easy to come by a good recording with the 'real' gipsy music. Well this one is the real deal.
Good recording - good music.

4 out of 5 stars Impossible to Disappoint.......2007-01-24

Would like to confirm what all the other reviewers are saying. This is a brilliant album of breezy, extremely danceable afropop tunes. Great melodies, lovely singing, flowing guitarwork. For veterans and newbies of african music alike (although chances are you're a veteran to even come across Orchestra Makassy).

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite!.......2005-12-01

This definitely is one of the best CDs I have ever listened to (and now own - thanks to Amazon). This is the real deal, all songs are ORIGINAL Makassy recordings - no 'mordenized' renditions, and no filler material. Excellent artistic quality expected of Mzee Makassy when he teamed up with the likes of Fan Fan Mosese and Ongala Remmy. 100% pure, authentic enjoyment from the first to the last track...and I'm talking as an 'expert' on East, Central and Southern African music (I own at least 200 African CDs and grew up in the region).

5 out of 5 stars Legends of East Africa Orchestra Makassy.......2005-05-06

This is one of the finest records ever to come out of Africa, and is one of the planet's finest popular music recording. I have Agwaya (original LP) and have been searching for these guys on CD for years. An absolute must have.

5 out of 5 stars Best Highlife album EVER.......2005-04-04

I'm a long-time fan of African music. I've been searching for a CD version of my all-time favorite album "Agwaya" by Orchestra Makassy. (Virgin records) "Legends of East Africa: The Original Recordings by Orchestra Makassy" is it. If only we had more work from this amazing ensemble of musicians. I recommend it highly. 5 out of 5 stars finnaly released, what a great album.......2005-03-08

This cd is one of the best albums of all time.Unbelievable that it took 24 years to get this music on cd.The album came out as an LP close before the CD was introduced. The 8 first titles are from the original agwaya album and are of a level african music you probably never heard before. If you like african music, do yourself a big favor and buy this one.The only weak spot on this cd is the end, when I have to press on the play button of my cd player again.

It was the South African sounds on Paul Simon's Graceland that first brought world music into the spotlight, and from there it's continued to shine. This album doesn't try to be The Indestructible Beat of Soweto; instead, it covers a wider canvas of the country's musical range. Along with mbaqanga, the style that's become so recognizably South African, there's the reggae of Lucky Dube (who would love to be Bob Marley), township jazz from Miriam Makeba, straight jazz from Hugh Masekela, and the ineffable Zulu harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, whose a cappella singing has both richness and emotion. The late Mahlathini roars in his unique lion voice (and he really does sound like a lion), and his backing band, the Mahotella Queens, brings "Mbube" (known in the West as "Wimoweh") back home again, where it belongs. In truth, there's not a bad track here, from the superb Soul Brothers to Johnny Clegg. As much as any one record can act as an introduction to a country, this does an excellent job. --Chris Nickson

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Outstanding!.......2002-11-02

I am thrilled to have come across this album while in a Borders Bookstore one night. I had never really listened to African music before and this album just blew me away! I love it more than anything and can't play it enough! It's- fun, bouncy, happy, dance-able music that will make you smile and will wash your cares away. There are also a few somewhat melancholy, reflective songs on the album too but this does not in any way bring the album's theme of joviality down in the slightest. It is a very emotional and spirtual album that will make you feel good all over. Every song on this album is fantastic! I am now hooked on African music and (thanks to Putamayo), will be adding more and more of this wonderful continents' musical treasures to my collection. If you like- happy, upbeat, emotional African music that you can dance to, this is the album to have!

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but it isnt the best of putumayo........2002-09-23

This cd isnt bad at all, however it is not the best among Putumayo's recordings.

Some of the songs in this cd, to my opinion, are pretty "pop" in nature. I was expecting some folk songs or alike from South Africa, but what i got was pretty modern. I have to admit, however, the selection of songs are not bad. It doesnt hurt to try this one out, but sure some other Putumayo labels are more appealing than this one.

        5 out of 5 stars A must-have for just about anyone.......2001-05-31

I have always loved African music, so of course when I saw this album, I just had to buy it. It covers a broad range of styles from soul, jazz, mbaqanga, reggae, jive and of course the wonderful a capella style of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. And like the other Putumayo releases, this one is also handsomely packaged with an informative booklet featuring photos and information about each performer. This is an album that everyone should hear, every song is a treat and leaves you wishing that there were more than 10 songs on it. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Journey Through Africa.......2000-09-30

If you listen to Miriam Makeba or Johnny Clegg, you might want to pay very special attention to < >. The music is not something you will encounter and tune into radio. In fact, you won't be able to appreciate the music until you change your attitude (about the music). One has to look for the underlying textures and levels of music. Pay attention to the beat underneath. The music will touch your soul. Imagine yourself wandering through the safari and conquering the nature in Africa. A brilliant recording!

5 out of 5 stars Good music for the soul.......2000-07-08

Here we have a good taste selection of the big offer of music from the African Continent... the music have textures, that can make us travel trough our minds to another places. Recomendable for those who want to open their ears to another experiences

        Album Description

The Lap Steel Guitar has been called ..."the most expressive and toneful instrument ever conceived". When you hear this album, you'll know why. Featuring a diverse range of musical styles such as Country, Hawaiian, Folk, Western Swing, Surf 'Noir'and New Age, performed by spectacular musicians from The United States, Canada, Hawaii and Australia. Some of the musicians are legendary, some have played with 'legends'. All are brilliant. Included are some 'classic' songs as well as some new compositions that are pure genius. There are two vocal tracks that show another dimension to the depth and versatility the instrument has to offer. This CD is guranteed to 'steel' your heart.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good but a bit misleading.......2004-01-07

First-I liked the album. The good things about it included the variety and breadth of musical styles - from Bob Brozman (poster child for all things National Guitar) to Kayton Roberts who does a nice version of Bells of St. Mary's. My only gripe is that much of the music deviates from what is known as the "lap steel guitar" (a relatively small electrified six to 10 string instrument), offering various slide guitar and resonator guitar songs as well. It would be as if they called a record "all about trombones" and only include one or two songs just with trombones and the rest with other instruments. I was not disappointed with the sound, but thought that they could have either called it something else or included more actual lap steel guitars on the record.

1 out of 5 stars Kui Lee never sounded like this in person.......2005-04-09

I was really disapponted with this CD. The description that comes with the CD indicates that a "jazzist" named Mike Berniker produced the album. Unfortunately, what resulted is a jazzy, and snappy series of songs that do not do justice to the Kui Lee who used to sing with a slower and deeply emotional delivery. During the time that Kui Lee was singing at Queens Surf I was living in the Waikiki Aquarium and I used to listen to his music almost every night. It was beautiful and haunting and this CD does not begin to do justice to the Kui Lee I remember.

5 out of 5 stars The extrodinary Kui Lee.......1999-11-28

I love that this legend is being kept alive, he was so gifted with his beautiful voice and I also appreciate that Don Ho has worked hard to see that we never forget him:-)

5 out of 5 stars Ah...the Days of my Youth!!.......1999-03-05

Hearing this album again brought back the happy and fun-filled memories of my childhood. Kui Lee takes your heart to much simplier and kinder days with his music. A must for any Hawaiian music collection!

Flutist James Galway and pianist Phil Coulter seek to present a handful of the most widely recognizable Celtic melodies in Legends. "Danny Boy" gets an intimate flute and piano treatment, while the famed "Riverdance" gets a full orchestral background and uillean pipes solo. There's the evocative, sweet expanse of "Harry's Game," and the classic "Mna na h-Eireann (Women of Ireland), with which Sean O'Rioda helped rekindle Irish interest in the country's musical history. Galway and Coulter go beyond the Celtic border to pay Henry Mancini tribute with the lush television miniseries theme, "The Thornbirds," thus crossing into easy listening and certain radio hit territory. This isn't the blazing traditional Celtic music of the post-1960s generation, nor is it the polyethnic mix of today's young Celtic artists. Instead, Legends is a listener-friendly mix of Celtic moods and lite classical, something for all ages to hum along with. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Recording By Two Great Artists.......2005-12-10

I first heard LEGENDS while touring Ireland in the summer of 1998. The bus we traveled on played a cassette tape of it over and over again, and I thought I'd never want to hear it again. As soon as I returned to my home outside of Boston, MA, I wanted to be back in Ireland, revisiting the places I grew to love in an all too short a visit. So as soon as I could, I purchased the CD and I listened to it over and over again just like on the bus in Ireland. As I traveled the roads of Boston, I was thinking of The Cliffs of Moher or the Ring of Kerry.

This CD was the first collaboration between Phil Coulter, a name better known in Ireland at the time, and internationally acclaimed flutist James Galway. As musicians, the two are more similar than different. Both are serious, skilled and versatile musicians who also know how to entertain without sacrificing musical quality. The CD contains a variety of music from Irish standards such as "Danny Boy" and "The Kerry Dances" to contemporary favorites such as the music from RIVERDANCE. There are some original works by Coulter as well as some Coulter arrangements. The one piece that is not Celtic per se, but the listener would never know it's not from the arrangement, is Aaron Copeland's "Hoedown" from RODEO. Each piece has a part for Coulter and Galway, who at times uses traditional Irish flutes to give the music a true Celtic flair.

While I enjoy this disc for the music, there is something else I appreciate about this set and it's follow up WINTER'S CROSSING. In both collaborations, there is a sense of collaboration where the talents of both artists shine. It's been a favorite of mine since 1998 an I'm sure it will be for years to some.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Celtic albums.......2001-02-18

I have to admit that when I first heard of this album, I pictured it as just haveing piano and flute. But when I got this album for Christmas I discovered it was more than music with pianist Coulter and flutist Galway. It is a collection of some of the best music of Ireland. It has traditional tunes like "Believe Me", "Danny Boy", and "Lagan Love". It also included modern contempory hits like the great dance "Riverdance", the classic "Hoedown", "Women of Ireland"(which makes one think of big stars like Sinead O' Conner, Mary Black, and Enya), and a remake of Clannad's hit "Harry's Game". It also includes compositions by Phil Coulter, such as "Battle at Kinsale", "Lament For Wild Geese", and "An Cailin Fionn". There are many excellent musicians accompanying Coulter and Galway, who include Frank Gallagher, David Downes(who has played and recorded with Clannad), and David Cooke on keyboards. The music often contains many traditional sounds with drums, guitar, fiddle, and uillean pipes. There also are many beautiful orchestrations, which brings so many wonderful exciting sounds! Sometimes the music had a male chorus chanting haunting vocals. All of these songs are really good and each one deserves its own praise. "Riverdance" has as much rythm and beauty as the original. "Harry's Game" sounds so enticing with uillean pipes and traditional sounds. "Believe Me/Gentle Maiden" sounds like a lullaby(if only it included the poetic lyrics!). "Women In Ireland" is very up beat with a mix of pop and traditional sounds. "The Valley of Tears" is very poignant with the piano and flute. The two tracks "Thornbirds" and "Lannigan's Ball/Kerry Dances", bring dancing rythm with sounds of traditional jigs. "Danny Boy", fits perfectly with piano and flute. "Music for a Found Harmonium" is one of my favorites, because it has a lot of energy on the piano, flute, and all of the other instruments. "Lament For Wild Geese" is very sad, beautiful, and touching. "Lagan Love" is the best version of this song I have every heard! I never would of thought I would hear that song with drums and chorus. "Ashkon Farewell" is a good reflection of how the American and Celtic cultures have come together. Many Irish and Scots fought in the Civil War. "An Cailin Fionn" is my favorite, for it is one of the most beautiful melodies Ireland has to offer. Phil Coulter composed the tune for Natasha Richardson, the wife of Liam Neeson who is a good friend of Coulter. "Hoedown" brings sounds of the past to the present with folk melodies and orchestrations.

So if you love Celtic music, you will really love this album. This is some of the best music Ireland has to offer.

        5 out of 5 stars LEGENDS.......1999-12-03

One of my favorite Celtic CD's..the haunting melodies of the flute..accompanied with the piano as it unravels Ireland's past and hope of a better future...My favorite is "Battle of Kinsale"(The Valley of Tears)it certainly does brings tears to me...The theme to "Thornbirds" is beautiful..as well as every song....a sheer join....a must for any collector of Irish music...

5 out of 5 stars Touching and very beautiful pieces!.......1999-11-04

I'm a big fan of Galway, but never had a chance to listen to Phil Coulter before. Their collaboration is just perfect. I enjoy it as much as Galway's solo effort. It just brings back memory of ancient time when things are less noisy. In fact, I'm thinking of buying another piece of their work.

5 out of 5 stars Super sounds, super tranquility, Great music.......1999-08-24

I was introduced to this duo while traveling in Ireland. I became thorougly enchanted with their sound. The haunting melodies and tranquility that these two men can produce are incredible. Keep including their CDs in your inventory.
