Customer Reviews:
One of the best compilation albums ever.......2005-10-11
Compilation CDs are always such an iffy prospect. Bad ones aren't worth it all. Ones with only a good song or two are annoying to have to skip through. But good ones, ones in which every track is solid--well, compilations like that are as good as it gets: a good, varied listen, and a good introduction to a host of great bands you've never heard before, and a reason for living.
"These are Centre St. Tracks" is just such a compilation. Buy it for one band, keep it for thirteen. This CD includes a great range of mostly Boston-area bands, and fuels my suspicion that Boston has one of the best and least recognized music scenes in all of America.
"Transistor" by Torrez is a gorgeous alt.country/indie song that uses beautiful lyrics, haunting female vocals, and steel guitar to create a song that will seep in through your every pore and drift around in your mind for weeks: "You took the radio back home. There's nothing but a song, where you were."
"Wedding Day" by Soltero also appears on Soltero's outstanding "Hell Train" album under the title "Michael," and is addressed to a guy about to get married and pulled back into the church he grew up in--a guy who finds solace driving dirt roads and clambering around adobe ruins. It's haunting, a little creepy, stark (but catchy), and very fitting for late night drives. Soltero is the greatest.
"If I Was to Write a Love Song" by Whistle Jacket will soon be one of your favorite songs. It's incredibly happy and uses triangles for extra chirp and sparkle. I love it, and I keep meaning to get their whole album.
"Stupid Way Home" by So & So is another good one, another song with a female vocalist. I'm not usually crazy about female vocalists, but all the songs on this CD are great.
"City vs Country" by The Mobius Band is a must-hear. This is band that often used to back up Soltero, but their stuff on their own is amazing as well. This song in particular is great. I don't even know who to compare them to--good Sordid Humor, maybe--but their music is driving, gritty, and feels right on. "It seems like it was enough, but it's not ever enough, no...."
And "Eyes Like Knives" by Waylo gives me chills when the crunch of guitar chugs through the songs wispy vocals and defeated drums. It's sad and lovely.
All the other bands are good as well, though some more than others. There are certain Boston bands I would have liked to see here, such as Mr. Airplane Man (who rock way more than The White Stripes with their similar instrumentation), but overall this a great mix of great artists from a great scene. No matter where you live, this is a CD you can take home to meet your family, a CD you can love. A CD you should love.
Some good, low key tunes.......2003-12-24
I was one of the first to pick up a copy of Centre St. Tracks' excellent debut compilation CD, "These are Centre St. Tracks". Born on the mean streets of JP as the brainchild of music industry entrepreneur Ms. Nora Murphy, this CD showcases the sometimes formidable talent of a few of the Boston area's still under cover rock bands. Highlights include the Neil Young/Weezer fusion piece "If I Was to Write a Love Song" (Whistle Jacket), the little bit Radioheady "City vs. Country" (The Mobius Band), and the Pixies inspired "Wishing I Was John" (Prime Rib). "Sinkhole" (Choo Choo La Rouge) and "Coffee Shop Girl" (The Cautions) are also a lot of fun, if not symphonic masterpieces.
This is a mostly mellow disc which only occasionally lets it rip, but at less than $9.00, it's a steal. This is especially true if you live in the Boston area or have an interest in the local music scene.
