THIS IS A TRUE ROCK N' ROLL! .......2006-02-23
"The Sky Is Falling" by Sinners & Saints is among the most stellar works by those who play a true rock n' roll to a full degree. Some people might try out this CD because of an familiarity to the members' main bands, but this band certainly does not need such names to go around because their music speaks louder for itself. Surprisingly, listening this CD over years has not yet reached myself to the point where I get tired listening it, given the fact that I bought it a few days after it came out in 2001. Only CD I can compare it to other music that provides me such a special feeling is "Appetite for Destruction" by Guns N' Roses, which I hope new album would soon be out. The comparison of this CD to Guns' Appetite is highly understandble in that both have identical guitar works and the vocal tone. Honestly, every track in this album is an excellent representation of what Rock N' Roll should be. I like the "da da da" part at the end of "Dead So Soon", highly reminiscent of good old days when Rock N' Roll was people's top notch. I also like a guitar solo and following breakdown in the song "the Sky Is Falling." Furthermore, "Never Too Young To Die" and "Marquee Lights" demonstrates a higher layer of guitar works that keeps me love these songs forever. The lyrics throughout the album are very real. Not to mention that dual vocals contributes a lot to the fruitfulness of their music. Also, I just found that the CD comes with a little quicktime movie that shows an interesting interview (it took me 5 years to figure this out!). Lastly, the reunion of Sinners & Saints and recording a new album would be strongly appreciated (please!) as much as I anticipate the return of the original lineup of Guns N' Roses! If you love early Guns N' Roses (which I assume a majority of people do), I highly recommend to possess this CD by Sinners & Saints.
Real Rock N' Roll is still alive.......2002-09-11
Sinners & Saints are composed of core members White Trash Rob Lind (of Blood For Blood fame) and his brother Mark (of Ducky Boys fame). Rob and Mark, both very influenced by pure rock n' roll decided to team up, write some songs and make a record that sounds like a cross-breed of Social Distortion, Guns N' Roses, and even a little Bruce Springsteen sprinkled in for good measure. The end result happens to be my third favorite record of 2002 (trailing behind Frank Black's 2 amazing new releases).
Being a Blood For Blood fan for several years, I knew that Rob would not disappoint me. Recent B4B releases have strayed a bit from their pure hardcore roots, combining elements of rock n' roll and tons of catchy melody along with the ever-present anger, and, IMO, each record is better than the one before it.
So that brings us to Sinners & Saints. According to Rob and Mark, some of the material on "The Sky Is Falling" was actually written for B4B and the Ducky Boys. Of course, by listening to the record you would never know it. There's not a single trace of hardcore to be found here. Just sugar sweet melodies, ultra catchy yet simple riffs and Rob and Mark pulling off some fantastic vocals. Rob is really impressive, his voice has never sounded better. In fact, upon first listen I actually had to question if this was really Rob singing. Unlike his vocal performances in B4B, there's really not a lot of anger here. Just A LOT of heart. Mark's voice has improved from his Ducky Boys performances as well.
Lyrically, this is one hell of a heartfelt record. If you can't find something to relate to here, you must not be human. "The Times We Had" is brilliant. The lyrics never really clarify whether or not the narrator is reminiscing of lost love or merely lost friendship, but I can relate to it on both levels.
"Nothing At All" finds Mark doing the lead vocals, singing about crossing paths with an ex-lover. Very heartfelt. Once again, I totally relate.
"The Sky Is Falling" finds Rob doing an amazing job on lead vocals. This song is just so brilliant. When you hear it you will be asking yourself "why the hell isn't this band HUGE?" This song alone destroys any of the rock singles that have received any degree of airplay in the past couple of years.
"Never Too Young To Die", another favorite (hell, the whole damn record is incredible), starts out very reminiscent of the song "Glitter" by Motley Crue (from the Generation Swine record). Of course once the song kicks in, it's pure Sinners & Saints, ultra-catchy melodies and, once again, very well written lyrics. This song is a song of hope narrated by someone who feels hopeless and tired of trying. Buy this and listen, you'll totally understand exactly what I mean.
"The Sky Is Falling" ends with "It's All Coming Down"...another Mark-sang song. Really catchy chorus that reminds me, for some reason, of Rick Springfields "Jessies Girl". I know both Rob and Mark are really into 80's pop, so it would only be natural that a little bit of that influence would seep into their music.
If you're a rock n' roll fan BUY THIS IMMEDIATELY!!! I can't stress enough just how strong a record this is. In a world with true justice, these guys would be mega-stars, touring stadiums filled with sold-out crowds. The amazing thing about "The Sky Is Falling" is the fact that it can (and will) appeal to so many different crowds (the Weezer/Foo Fighters crowd, The GNR crowd, the Social Distortion crowd)...and I dare say, with the exception of maybe GNR, S&S are better than any of the above. Trust me on this one folks. This is a truly amazing record in an era in which placing the word "amazing" in front of the word "record" is becoming an ever increasingly difficult task.

Customer Reviews:
The one and only Fred Neil.......2005-07-06
The late Fred Neil wasn't exactly well known outside Greenwich Village. The closest he came to stardom (if any) was the Nilsson interpretation of Everybody's talking on the soundtrack of Midnight Cowboy. A subtle yet significant influence on other singer-songwriters such as Bob Dylan and Tim Buckley, Neil was a reclusive person, eschewing publicity. Neil passed away in 2001, leaving a legacy that surpasses his songs.
This album is comprised of earlier released live tracks available on Other side of this life and The many side of Fred Neil. But it also includes four tracks only available on folk compilations including one, The sky is falling, wich has never been available anywhere else (unless the Raven release of August has some surprises). This makes the album a must for anybody who takes folkmusic and singer-songwriters to heart.

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.
Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

Moved to tears.......2004-03-18
Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.
Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27
John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended
harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12
I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.
Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22
As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.
That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.
I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.
I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.
Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02
This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

Joyful Album!!!!!!.......2004-01-11
I am so thrilled that Thomas Otten made Portraits as I find his voice mesmerizing. After reading some negative reviews I had my doubts about his new release and was unsure after sampling some of the songs on Amazon. Later I visited Thomas Otten's web site (The English site is still under development but the French site is ready and you don't have to speak French to download.) where I was able to download 80 sec clips of ALL of the songs on his new album. From that point on I was hooked and returned to Amazon to place my order. About "Portraits", no, it doesn't sound like "Close to Silence" and thank goodness. If it did he could have just made the previous album a 2 cd set and been done with it. I love the new feelings that this album evokes in me. I feel transported to some open fields perhaps in Spain on a warm sunny day. There were a couple of songs that did not strike a chord with me right away as they were unexpected styles, but just like new foods one has to sample them 3 times to either develop a taste for it or truly learn that you don't like it. After several plays I was able to appreciate these new forays and applaud Thomas for taking chances. Had I not taken a chance I would never have been able to grow musically. On top of this are some beautiful songs ("Voices", "Feel Low") that just send me straight to Heaven. There are NO guarantees in life, take a chance!!!
I don't rate this cd because it doesn't deserve a rate.......2003-10-01
I awaited a long time for the release of the Thomas Otten second cd. The first cd is a wonderfull cd, it is a work like no one I have ever heard before.
This second work is a totally mess, a waist of time.
I wonder if it was written, composed and sung by the same people of the first one.
Don't buy it if you liked Close To Silence.
Don't buy it at all!
So-o-o-o-o Disappointed.......2003-08-14
After being brought to my knees,(literally) by Thomas Otten's first album, Close to Silence, I could barely wait until his next release. I found Portraits to be extremely disappointing. I felt much of his vocals on this release were forced and I kept getting the feeling throughout the CD that this was rushed to press. I don't feel this CD came from the same place/space as his first. Hopefully his future endeavors will be able to "capture" the message I clearly heard/felt in his first.
"Otten's vocal style is mesmerizing, overwhelming & amazing".......2003-05-27
Higher Octave takes the reins as we journey through the catacombs of Opera, High/Mass Chants and blends of New Age thus we have "Portraits", featuring Thomas Otten who is so overwhelming that the hair on the back of your neck will stand on end. I'm a purist when it comes to some music and this certainly fits the bill ~ his amazing voice takes on another realm of music categories, that even the most educated individual in this field would be stymied.
The entire album is priceless (all eleven tracks), his delivery is impeccable and right on the money. Looking forward to future projects from this one-of-kind artists ~ he hits every note without looking back ~ that is the sign of a well-trained singer/performer. Hats off to Higher Octave for releasing this album and to our favorite vocalist ~ THOMAS OTTEN!

Needs An Orchestra.......2005-03-02
The songs chosen here are fine but Mario sings with only a piano to back him up and this is the downfall of this CD.
If there was at least a small combo backing him up then this CD would be worth the money.
Instead it is too musically lacking and Mario's voice can't save it!
The performance of a lifetime.......2002-12-18
This was the golden age of music with the voice of the century in the performance of a lifetime. This disc will forever change your appreciation of the human voice. This is the singer who made opera lovers out of the bobby-soxers and movie goers out of the operaphiles. There never was an artist with such a combination of gifts in the history of recorded music-and it all came together that special night. There are operatic arias, Broadway show tunes, and even a piece that brings the audience to laughter. Mario's introductions display his warmth and humor. The piano accompanist and the hall's accoustics are excellent and the recording quality is as good as any from this era. I believe that live recordings can bring out the best in a singer and this disc proves me correct. Oh, to have been a member of that audience! While we may speculate on what would have been, let us be thankful for what we have. Number one on that list is this disc.
An Unforgettable Voice.......2002-04-11
I saw opera for the first time through Lanza's movie The Great Caruso. Since then I became a Lanza fan. As I myself a "dilettante" tenor when taking solfeo lessons in my youth I was told never to try singing like Mario Lanza because it would hurt my voice. The reason given was that Lanza voice was specially engineered in the recording studio. This record shows what I always believe. Lanza voice was not only exceptional but that recorded live does not allow for "special" effects. His voice and his films are unforgettable. Pity he died too young when he was getting ready to move into performing opera in the great theaters of the world. I advise the new generation to listen to this record and enjoy one of the most beautiful voices of the 20th Century.
Brilliant but erratic.......2000-10-14
From the opening bars of the beautiful Lamento di Federico, it's immediately apparent that Lanza was in great voice in this 1958 concert. True, Lanza's voice at this stage was too dark for the delicate lyricism of the Lamento, but it's a thrilling rendition nonetheless, complete with Lanza's interpolated high B.
This is the later Lanza voice, a much more baritonal sound than the Mario of the MGM period, but with that effortless top still firmly in place. The encore Because You're Mine displays a breathtaking B-flat finish that sends his audience into a frenzy. Other highlights include a poignant Tell Me, Oh Blue, Blue Sky and a surprisingly nimble Gia, il sole del gange, in which he lightens his tone effectively. The concert is a must-have, if only because it demonstrates Lanza's extraordinary versatility and his unique manner of "working" an audience.
Be warned, however, that this is not Lanza at his most subtle. If you're looking for the best of the later Mario, check out his masterful Mario! Lanza At His Best CD. Lanza did not want this concert released on disc, and from all accounts he gave far better performances at other concerts in this period in both Britain and Germany. Unfortunately, this is the only record we have of his final concert tour.
Having said that, the CD is still essential listening for anyone interested in a unique vocal talent. Even at his roughest, this is compelling singing of the highest order, and allowance should be made for the fact that it is a live performance. The sound quality is excellent. Warn your neighbours before putting this on - this is singing to rattle the teacups!
Clear and powerful! Mario sings with great reverance!.......1998-11-09
Maestro Lanza sang beautifully in this recital! Must have it in your Lanza disc collecton. He was still in top form even though the end was drawing to a close! Superb!

Not bad.......2007-05-04
Not bad but not great. No Means No are one of my favorite bands, so underrated the wrong album is a classic. Here they are again showing off their musical talents with that great stop start almsot jazz flow to their music backed up with a great bass. Jello on the other hand.......
Well with the Dead Kennedys he wrote some of the most politicaly inspiring songs you are ever likely to hear. Much different from say Crass who more went on a rant only Subhumans came close with their political humour. Jello hear sounds like he has run out of ideas (pity realy as I first heard this many moons ago on the John Peel show (gives you some idea how long ago he has since passed away!)) Sadly Jello here seems to have gone down the road of political rants rather than insight which was the landmark of the Dead Kennedys. Take the track 'The myth is real' Just a bunch of quotes and sound bytes but little meaning behind them.
Good music (it is No Means No after all) but lyrics, Check out a Dead Kennedys album. This is just Jello on a political rant for the kids.
Awesome, Ugly Math-Rock-Politico-baby-thing.......2005-03-16
(4.5 stars) Steaming along at a touch over half an hour, this record feels more epic than it is - probably due to the sequencing of the three longest tracks towards the end. As far as backing musicians, what NoMeansNo may lack in sheer power over previous collaborators D.O.A. they make up in spades with quirky energy and airtight musicianship. Even considering the (relatively speaking) complex epics of _Frankenchrist_ this is the best and tightest group of musicians Mr. Biafra has ever had at his command. And while Jello really isn't stretching himself too much here, spouting off the same paranoid absurdist dystopian scenarios and sociopolitical critiques from the far, far, left, he's adapted his manic vocal delivery enough to match the herky-jerky frantic noodling of NMN. Other than the appropriately-titled "Bad" (credited to the Ramones-worshipping alter-egos of NMN "The Hanson Brothers") all of the tracks are pretty much outstanding. "Bruce's Diary", with its faux Average White Band keyboard horn section and a driving, funky loping beat, is my favorite track, with the slashing, almost King Crimson-esque attack of "Sharks In The Gene Pool" taking a close second. But most of the record is good clean fun, whether its the spare, eerie tale of sewer rat vs. human "Chew" (great chorus, Jello) or the silly but raging log flume tribute "Ride The Flume." The flat raspy production, combined with NMN's ultra-treble aggro guitar tones, adds a perhaps unnecessary harhnesss to some of the record - but you can only contain this energy so much. Highly recommended.
an easy listening classic.......2004-12-11
Jello Biafra has not put out that much in the way of dud material, and this cd is definitely one of his better releases. For some reason, people are harsher about this than his overrated 'Prairie Home Invasion'. (Sorry, I'm a big fan of Jello, as much as Mojo Nixon, but that was not such a great album).
This is much as you would expect of a Jello Biafra album - fruit-loop vocals, heavy pile-driver punk riffs and more parandoid rants than your average David Hasselhoff compilation.
Standout tracks are; 'the Flume', 'the Myth is real, let's Eat' and 'Chew'. The latter being a heartwarming account of mutant super-rats taking over the city subway and feasting on hapless commuters.
To think poor old Jello got beaten up in Frisco for being a 'punk sellout' - who says Americans don't understand the concept of irony . . .
Dead Kennedy's revived.......2003-05-04
I can't say much about No Means No on their own terms, but based on this record, it sounds like they came up as a Dead Kennedy's cover band. I mean, they have that DK sound wired!
Speaking only for myself, I found most of DK's stuff after Fresh Fruit to be a little annoying. I respect 'em greatly, but there wasn't a whole lot of levity in their later recordings. This is the best thing, IMHO, that Jello has done since Fresh Fruit. His maturity, topics, and *unique style* fit perfectly here, and this is a great, overlooked punk record...
This is a good Dks substitute until the reunion!!!!!!!lol.......2002-04-28
well seeing how there never will be a reunion .this is about as close you well get it to it.bringing the most talented punk band nomeansno(a band that is a mix of raw punk with musicmanship)songs that go on more than 2 minutes.with the most outspoken punk activeist front man jello biafra. this is as good as it get since the dks did Frankenchrist.that no lie!!! i could explain the album in complete detail but my other frinds here at amazom have done a nice job doing so.so i will just say if you want some punk for your collection that will make it seem worthwhile this is not an album to miss out on!!!...

Album Description
"Birds Falling from the Sky" is an 18 track album by Seattle performance and recording project The Harmonica Pocket. Released in August 2005, the record is an eclectic, unpredicable tally of genre-crossing tunes.
From the experimental opening soundscape "last night i saw" into "earth over air" a folk-reggae track spliced with voicemail excerpts; OR from the lo-fi record player blues on "bag of never" to the beatlesque epic pop song "the stars are all out," song after song the Harmonica Pocket consistently takes musical risks and effortlessly colors outside the lines of commerical music.
Check out the Harmonica Pocket website for *many* more unreleased, full length, high quality mp3s.
Customer Reviews:
Fun Fun Fun.......2007-03-30
Unlike hundreds of todays upcoming artisits, Harmonica Pocket goes off the typical boring path of making each song on an album sound like the one before and after it. The fun combination of sounds, instruments and lyrics makes each song on the album totally different from another. Imagine that! It is so refreshing to hear truly NEW music. Lemonbomb might just be the best song ever for driving to work in the morning, cooking dinner or even waking up to! Pocketful... AAHHHH great song.
KUDOS!
Unique and Creative.......2006-10-15
With some independently released albums including a very charming one for children, The Harmonica Pocket brings a lot of heart to their music; which in my dumb opinion more than few major label artists seem to lack. I can't help but feel a little happier while I'm listening to this cd.
The songs, lyrics, vocals are all very original and creative. I'd be hard pressed to pick the best but my personal favorites are Earth Over Air, Drive, Float/Fall, and See Ya Maria. [...]
Anyway, I honestly can't think of anything I'd fault or criticise this album on. There's two cds worth of songs here and nearly all of them are good so give them a chance.

Product Description
The Sky Is Falling has been out of print for years. This is a re-issue with a new booklet, new photos, brand new e.q. and new mastering done with new technology. This sounds great and these thirteen songs are among some of Randy's most significant compositions. "Postcards From The Heart" was recorded during The Sky Is Falling Sessions. It is about Randy's parents. "King of Hearts" is the full orchestra version which Randy wanted to make. The rock version was released instead. This is that orchestral version. "Good News" is from the audio-synch version of the movie BBC released. Larry produced the session and organized the booking and has the 24 track 2" tapes of it. He hopes to release the entire Stonehill and Band concert by next year. 1. One True Love 2. Through The Glass Darkly 3. Teen King (Alternate Mix) 4. The Great American Cure 5. Venezuela 6.
