How does one encapsulate the mischievous musical conceits of Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo, aka Gene and Dean Ween? Infinitely less self-conscious than the smirky They Might Be Giants, yet possessed of a downright Zappa-esque sense of the perverse, Ween returns here from the problematic, if illusory, mainstreaming that characterized 2000's White Pepper to embrace an artistic tack that seems as focused as an errant cluster bomb. While eclecticism for its own sake has often yielded painful self-indulgence, G&D's is sublime enough to seem virtually pre-conscious. The white-trash thrash of "It's Gonna Be a Long Night" dispenses with the expected parody quotient early on, shrewdly clearing the stage for moody doses of psychedelia that are variously driving ("Transdermal Celebration"), dirgy ("Among His Tribe"), and languorously eerie ("Captain"). But, perhaps conscious of reputations to be maintained, those dreamy, chem-friendly spells are variously broken by the perfect '70s country-pop of "Chocolate Town," the pocket epic "The Argus," and tracks that somehow recall both Captain Beefheart and their own haphazard side-career scoring cartoons and other TV fare. There's something here for everyone, to be sure--but closer to Ween's antic hearts, something to annoy everyone as well. --Jerry McCulley --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Admittedly biased.......2006-04-20

I am, I admit, utterly biased. I worked for the show several years ago, my husband is one of the musicians (when you hear the sax on this CD, that's him) and I have a deep and abiding love and respect for the show, the music and above and beyond all else, the artists who make the experience of show and music what it is: Magical.
One of the suggestions I would make for any Cirque show is don't expect to understand it, just enjoy the energy swirling around - enjoy the music (and don't expect to understand the language, real language is rarely used - call it langue du Cirque - language of the Cirque - if you will - please also understand that most CD's only have a certain amount of time/space available - everything just couldn't fit - you can imagine I'm sure how difficult it was to choose the music to put on - but knowing the work of Benoit Jutras and the caliber of the musicians on the show then and now, these are some of the most professional, beautiful people - I'm not speaking of physical beauty, I'm speaking of artistic beauty - there is soul in this music, there is a sense of what the show is when you listen. Above all, there is everything from longing to celebration in this music. Cirque du Soleil is about losing yourself in a world of magic and artistry - why overanalyze it? Just enjoy the magic, enjoy the ride, enjoy the Cirque...

5 out of 5 stars The music brought it all back.......2005-10-26

I've seen O twice. There's so much going on that you can't get it all the first time. The music brought each part back. If you've not seen one of these shows, DO IT. They're expensive, but when you get in, it makes sense. Can't wait to see Corteo when it comes this way!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-09-26

True, there were some good memories from the show, but overall this CD didn't stack up to other greats (like Quidam).

Since O is such a visually-based show, I needed to be there again. Plus, I think my favourite 30 minutes of music from the 90 minute show didn't make the 60 minute CD. There was one song from the barge sketch in particular that just knocked my socks off, and I was hoping to find it on the CD, but didn't. Hence my disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Soundtrack to a Sublime show........2004-09-06

If you have not seen a cirque du soleil show, treat yourself to one. The ticket price may be unreasonable, but when you see the production and feats of dexterity, strength and skill you'll understand where your money is going. The soundtrack to the show "O" (phonetic for "eau" or water, which is the main theme for this performance) is a diligent sampling of the music you will hear at Bellagio in Las Vegas. I warn the buyers of this CD that the show runs approximately 90 minutes, and the CD is only 60 or so. Therefore if you were expecting extended mixes to match your "O" experience 100%, you will be disappointed. The overall music selection is okay as a stand alone. I'd use it for background music while doing something else. If you've seen the show, this will definetely spark some vivid memories. My personal favorite is about 5 minutes into the 5th track, Remous. (the barge sketch)

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful piece of work by Cirque.....again!.......2004-01-09

What takes a Cirque show to another level is the meshing of amazing music into nearly every act. The music brings back the feeling of that night. If you saw the show, and loved it as I did, then the CD is a must have. I would recommend it even for people who have not seen the marvelous show known as "O". This very well be my second favorite Cirque soundtrack, behind Alegria(and Francesca Gagnon) of course;-)

After I saw the show at the Bellagio and left without this CD, I regretted it very much. These songs bring back the feeling of that magical night. The haunting and lamenting voice in Nostalgie brings back the show as if I were there again. Other favorites are Jeux d'Eau, Mer Noire, Tzelma......and of course "O".

Album Description

Ike Quebec's 1961-1962 comeback albums for Blue Note were all pretty rewarding, but Blue and Sentimental is his signature statement of the bunch, a superbly sensuous blend of lusty blues swagger and achingly romantic ballads. True, there's no shortage of that on Quebec's other Blue Note albums, but Blue and Sentimental is the best one by far. Quebec was a master of mood and atmosphere, and the well-paced program here sustains his smoky, late-night magic with the greatest consistency of tone. Part of the reason is that Quebec's caressing tenor sound is given a sparer backing than usual, with no pianist among the quartet of guitarist Grant Green, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. It's no surprise that Green solos with tremendous taste and elegance (the two also teamed up on Green's similarly excellent Born to Be Blue), and there are plenty of open spaces in the ensemble for Quebec to shine through. His rendition of the Count Basie-associated title cut is a classic, and the other standard on the original LP, "Don't Take Your Love From Me," is in a similarly melancholy vein. Through it all, Quebec remains the quintessential seducer, striking just the right balance between sophistication and earthiness, confidence and vulnerability, joy and longing. It's enough to make Blue and Sentimental a quiet, sorely underrated masterpiece.

Personnel includes:
Ike Quebec - Piano, Sax (Tenor)
Grant Green - Guitar
Paul Chambers - Bass
"Philly" Joe Jones - Drums

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking album.......2006-05-11

This album is simply beatifull. Iqe Quebec's (tenor) tone is irremarkable. Iqe and Grant Green (guitar) colaborate so smoothly on this album, and the rytham section of Philly Joe Jones (drums) and Paul Chambers (bass) is just right for this session. The album's title does kind of say it all and I must warn you fast paced music lovers, this album is slow, blue, and sentimental. So if speed is what you need you ain't gonna get it here. The first three tracks are simply the law, they make this album what it is. Don't get me wrong the whole album is terrific, but the first three tracks set the pace for the rest of the album. Track 8 was recorded a week after the rest of the album and there are different musicians present. Quebec and Green are the same, but Sonny Clark plays piano, Sam Jones plays bass, and Louis Hayes plays drums. A great album to listen to first thing in the morning, or last thing after a good night of roaming the streets. Play it loud!!!

5 out of 5 stars blue and sentimental.......2004-10-09

the title song says it all. this CD is great jazz and anyone can enjoy it from the conneseour to the casual jazz fan. ike quebec never got his due, but he knows how to blow.

4 out of 5 stars Tremendous music, but..........2001-04-22

The music here is as affecting as suggested by the other reviewers, but the sound quality, specifically the digital transfer, is poor, in my opinion to the point of being unlistenable. The highs are very harsh and metallic, and Ike Quebec's mellifluous tone is not done justice. There were a number of blue note transfers in the mid eighties that suffered in this regard: many of these are thankfully available remastered in the RVG edition, as is this, albeit as a Japanese import.

5 out of 5 stars A Handfull of Heartbreak.......2001-01-27

As sweet and lovely a balladeer as Willis Jackson, Ben Webster, or Coleman Hawkins, among others, Ike Quebec is not well known and that is a grave injustice to his memory. But to hear Ike Quebec play a ballad is to experience something almost beyond description. If you could hear honey running down a hot ceramic plate in July, that would be the sound of Ike Quebec. For years I searched for more albums by Quebec only to learn that his meager output was due to the fact that he died in 1963. Any of Quebec's ballad-play will break your heart or, if you are one of the hardhearted, at least bring tears to your eyes. Buy this album and his "It Might As Well Be Spring" for starters and then experience the frustration of finding that he made only a handfull of albums as a lead artist before he died. If the music doesn't break your heart, the knowledge that there was so little of it will. Just turn down the lights, close your eyes, and listen.

5 out of 5 stars Brings back memories.......2006-08-14

Each time I listen to 'O' it brings back a wonderful sense of nostalgia. When the gorgeous, sorrowful longing of "Jeux D'Eau" starts playing I get tingles all over my body, just as I did when I first saw the show at the Bellagio in Las Vegas and the red velvet curtains dropped to reveal the most mesmerizing show I have ever seen on stage - or, in this case, in water.

The story itself is complex yet breathtaking (you can interpret its meaning whichever way you'd like), and the wide range of emotions the music emits only further enhances the sweeping away part.

The melodies are mournful, jubilant, and, as ever, magical...

In short, these beautiful compositions will make you FEEL. So buy this soundtrack, and go see the show if you haven't already!

5 out of 5 stars 'Tis my favorite!.......2006-04-08

Funny thing is, I haven't even seen the show for "O," but I have had this album for 5 years now and it has quickly grown to become among my favorite albums of all time. This is probably my favorite cirque du soleil album. While it is versatile in different styles with a clash influence of popular and classical music, such sweet harmonious sounds and a tasteful blend of timbres create a colorful soundtrack to what I could picture to be an incredible show. If they will ever do the show "O" again I'm gonna see it. "Africa" and "Remous" are especially good, as they show much contrast in dynamics, texture, style, and timbre, as well as interpolating background effects to create a vision that one is in Africa during the night. "Gamelan," "Ephra," and "desert" are very well written songs, as well as the title track itself. If you love their music, this is definitely the cream of the crop.

5 out of 5 stars Sexy, Scintillating, Provocative, Nubile & Brilliant.......2006-03-21

As with all the works of Cirque Du Soliel, the music is a vital contributor to the magic.
The "O" Soundtrack is no exception.
Having seen many Cirque Du Soliel performances I find myself
remembering the music more than the amazing acrobatics.
Since I have not had the pleasure of seeing "O" in Las
Vegas, the music has given me an amazing sexy score of
beautifully arranged & elegant sounding symphonies, that matched with amazing aquatic performances, would simply blow me away.
If you are a fan of Cirque, you will love this soundtrack.
5 Stars. Excellent. Nouveau

5 out of 5 stars Benoit Jutras outdid himself on this one. .......2005-12-04

It's a great CD, buy it. Although some songs are a bit mediocre, like "Africa" and "Terre Aride" the CD is still worth listening to.

1. Jeux d'Eau: Wow, this song brings back memories. Sounds like the name of the song: "Dancing Waters!" Very peaceful, with the bells in the background. Kind of Christmas..ish.

2. Mer Noire: Kind of reminds of me of Spanish people.

3. Tzelma: The title reminds me of Aztec people, yet the music reminds me of the Chiquita lady with the fruit in her hat. 0_o.

4. Africa: Kind of boring.

5. Remous: VERY weird, but great. Reminds me of Scottish bagpipes and rainforests at the same time. Benoit Jutras outdid himself with this one.

6. Svecounia: The beginning sounds like fat ladies bouncing up and down in a sleazy setting, but the rest sounds really nice.

7. Nostalgie: Exactly what it sounds like. I love the erhu in the background.

8. Simcha: Great party song. (Let's par-TAY!)

9. Gamelan: Best song on CD. Period.

10. Ephra: Beginning sounds kind of bouncy, middle, sounds rock-ish. When I brought it to class, someone mistook it for a Yu-Gi-Oh! soundtrack. Kinda weird. Nevertheless, a great song.

11. Desert: Mediocre.

12. Terre Aride: Kind of long, and boring.

13. O: Short and sweet, great way to end a CD. Reminds of that theme from "Cats."

Well, enjoy the CD!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful =).......2005-03-04

A long time ago I was visiting a very nice art website and they had "Atmadja" playing in the background. I was in love with the song, it was beautiful but creepy. I don't know how, but I happened to remember the name of the song. Soon it was taken off the website and I wanted to find it SO bad. At that time I barely knew Cirque du Soleil even existed. My search ended quickly, as I couldn't find it anywhere.

A while later they were showing Quidam at my city, but unfortunately I didn't have enough time to go by the time I figured out it was here. One reason was that my mom wanted to go too, but I don't think she wanted to go nearly as badly as I did. Why did I want to go so bad? I really really liked that one song.

I recently decided to look again, I have no idea what brought it on, but I was DESPERATE to download the song, though if I ever saw the CD I would have picked it up immediatly. Then I got a credit card. Oh Joy. I was so happy. I bought the album and have been listening to it non-stop so far. =). I can't complain that there are parts missing as people have said, because I haven't seen it. As a real first timer to the whole Quidam and even Cirque Soleil thing, I am delighted. The music is gorgeous.

I think almost anyone can enjoy this music, it's absolutely lovely. I just wish that it were a bit longer. Oh well, we can't have it all. =)

5 out of 5 stars Cirque du Soleil Quidam.......2004-09-02

OH MY GOD!!! Right now I'm doing to things: writing this review, and listening to the song "Rivage". I am playing "Quidam" 24/7!!! At home, at work while jogging ANYWHERE!!! I love it. It's that simple.

Atmadja- Spooky, creepy, soft, and fantastic

Incantation- Energetic and upbeat

Marelle- Soft and soothing

Rivage- Extremly high energy, Loud and Booming*

Zydeko- Short and powerful

Let me Fall- Soft and Beautiful*

Innocence- A bit more classical

Carrousel-An exelellent song with a nice beat

Steel Dream- A nice song starting out slow and then geting funky

Seisouso- An good yet slow song

Reviil- A nice song quick at some parts and slow at others

Quidam- A FANTASTIC way to end the CD*

* My personal favorite

4 out of 5 stars Short but Sweet.......2003-04-27

"Quidam" is a hard album to classify. It's not as stylish and flamboyant as "Saltimbanco," not as grand and echoing as "Mystere," not as atmospheric as "Varekai." What it is is...well...wierd. The music hops merrily from genre to genre, blindsiding the listener with unexpected twists and turns. Between them, the twelve tracks incorporate orchestral strings, vocal chants, bayou accordions, old-fashioned calliopes, middle eastern pipes, and steel drums -- and more. The album is a perfect echo of the show itself, which definitely represents the creative peak of Cirque du Soleil.

"Quidam" has only two flaws that I can see. One: at forty-six minutes, it's the shortest of all the Cirque albums. Two: a lot of music from the show is missing, and a lot of the tracks in the second half are completely unfamiliar. The trick is to forget all this and just enjoy what there is to enjoy. My favorite tracks include "Incantation" (exotic and fun to dance to), "Zydeko" (short but full of energy), "Steel Dream" (pulse-pounding percussion), and the fantastic closing track, "Quidam," which is wonderfully uplifting. The songs benefit greatly from the gorgeous singing of Audrey Brisson-Jutras and Mathieu Lavoie, and even the background singers sound nice and enthusiastic.

On the whole, I'd say that no Cirque fan should miss "Quidam." Once you get over its length and disconnection from the actual live music, you'll flip.

This CD gives a glimpse into the experience of Quidam, a quite inspirational cd- that I can listen to over and over and still feel touched by it's intensity, as if I just left the show. An artistic masterpeice.

--Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Boring? Psht........2007-05-02

Ween are back with their first studio album on an indie label in 12 years, and let me start by saying this is probably the most polished indie album I've ever heard. Ween have returned to their sonic explorations and sound effect-flooded form. Only this time, instead of having potentially annoying phasers and pitch affected vocals, they sound nice and add a whole lot of atmosphere. In fact, most of this album revolves around atmosphere.

That being said, I've seen many reviews on this site calling this album boring, and unfunny. However, aside from a few songs here and there, Ween were never really lyrically funny. Most of the humor in Ween's music comes from the grotesque genre parodying, which there is plenty of on Quebec. Now, Ween have always been known for hopping from one genre to another as frequently as each song on an album, and that has not changed. This album starts off with a hard rock song and ends with something that sounds like it came straight from Pink Floyd.

The songs on here are sensational, though, and certainly not boring. You can take each song as an overblown parody, or an incredible display of genius. I personally think of it as both. "If You Could Save Yourself (You'd Save Us All)" sounds so serious that it's funny. Plus, this CD has accomplished what no other Ween album has accomplished (Aside from a few tracks on White Pepper), it's beautiful. Also, this would probably be the most accessible album to anybody who has not heard Ween before, as it has the least amount of songs that could be deemed annoying by anybody. So there you have it, now buy this thing.

5 out of 5 stars Not so Brown........2006-09-10

Quebec from start to finish covers an array of different music styles. The angry yelling pounding chords in Long night start the C.D. off. The C.D. moves along and by the end you're listening to "If You Could Save Yourself You'd Save us All," and feeling your heart wrench at the painfully smooth wailing of the guitar and the vocals.

This C.D. goes from brown to not. "Brown" being ween's term for songs that are pitchy, with weird effects; basically the really bizzare songs.

Ween created a masterpiece again. Hail the Boognish.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2006-08-11

Through space at 1.2 light years per hour, Ween's eighth piece of incredible studio work, quebec, is not only their best yet, but one the 2003's greatest releases.

The record is brimming with genuine emotion, beautiful and complex imagery and music, and lyrics that are at once passive and fire-breathing. quebec is like tossing David Bowie, Motorhead, Les Paul and lots of Pink Floyd into a blender and pushing the 'kill' button.

Aaron Freeman's (Gene Ween) unique and beautiful vocals backed by the intricate guitar work of Mickey Melchiondo (Dean Ween), sends an energetic flare clean through your speakers, hurtling into the room around you and charging the air with static electricity. When Freeman sings, "Jets flew in formation / I could see them /
Dropping the crustaceans / Leaving trails of flames in their wake," you believe him.

Ween only seem to get better as time progresses. If they can ever top this record, they'll have established themselves as one of the most outstanding rock bands the world has yet to offer. If not, they still came out of the deal with one album of unadulterated genius. Time will tell.

5 out of 5 stars Simultaneously Dark and Delightful.......2006-08-05

Ween's mastery of a variety of musical genres and broad use of humor are renowned, and should be points of note for the new listener. quebec highlights both of these Ween trademarks, while demonstrating their continually masterful songwriting, and experimentation with timbre and mood. Ween's music is not so much for the casual listener, though they do have tunes that can double as background music as well as music for the intent ear, but a music fan with a desire for fresh sound and a delight in surprises (a taste for humor and playful irony is also helpful) will no doubt find a happy home between quebec's open and close.

quebec is full of brilliant songwriting and ingenious use of tone, besides humor. "The Argus," "Happy Colored Marbles," and "Among His Tribe" especially showcase their skill, ranging from tunes that sound epic, suspensful, and ominous to near tear-jerkers.

quebec is a must have for Ween fans, and a must try for anyone else who has a curious ear. When you put this album in for the first time, be willing to experiment, to laugh, and to LISTEN beyond the funny sound effects to the real genius at the heart of this band.

For over three months now I've had to endure Brainless from New Jersey's nauseating "Review of Each Song" on this magnificent album and dude, I just can't let you be the first thing unsuspecting online punters bump into any longer so here's my own hastily assembled five-star review, which I'm hoping will be approved and posted instamatically: Quebec is quite simply and without question a large French-speaking province in Eastern Canada. Well, my work here is done.

5 out of 5 stars Still inspiring.......2006-06-09

Even though the album isn't composed of the exact music from the show, it still gives you the same sense of awe that you experienced while watching the show. And much of the cd's music is based loosely on the music from the show, so you will recognise most of the tracks. I am especially delighted with this album because my favorite song from the show (that plays while one of the creatures is carrying the illuminated balloon) is featured in three of the tracks :)

If you REALLY want the exact music from the show, there is an exclusive soundtrack that includes these tracks plus six live recordings from the show (though it costs much more). I can't tell you where online to find it because Amazon will get angry, but I'm sure if you're determined you can find it. ;)

2 out of 5 stars Not as expected..........2005-12-06

I gave this two stars because I felt sorry for Violaine Corradi. This is definetely not the Corradi I was expecting. If you want to listen to his better works, listen to Dralion! Varekai is not what I expected from a Cirque CD. I'm very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Not exaclty expected, but good nonetheless........2005-10-26

This CD is amazing.

Some people are angry that it doesn't have all of the tracks from the show, but none of the Cirque Du Soleil CDs do! This album was a departure from Cirque tradition, though, because it was the first CD to be released under the CIRQUE MUSIQUE label...they tried more the idea of the show, instead of the show itself. The CD and the show are two different entities, but they are both ones that I love very much!

5 out of 5 stars Varekai CD.......2005-08-15

Varekai is a Touring Show of Cirque du Soleil. It is a great show and the music hits your soul deeply. The lead female singer, Zara Tellander, hits great notes that reach out and go deeply into your soul. Cirque du Soleil always find singers who have great voices. Most songs are in an imaginary language. Trying to interpret one is difficult. Just let yourself go as you listen to it and let the music take your soul for a ride.

5 out of 5 stars Dear God there are some idiots on this earth..........2005-08-13

No, this is not the music from the live show, Varekai, but much of it is used somewhere throughout the show, perhaps in a slight variation or in different lengths. Regardless of whether or not it is the soundtrack to the show, it's still beautiful. If the people who claim to "love" the show actually knew anything about Cirque du Soleil Musique in general they would know that most of the show music they sell on CD is not an actual soundtrack. I know at least that the Quidam, Varekai, La Nouba, Alegria, and Dralion CDs are this way. But check the boutique at www.cirquedusoleil.com, because they have released new editions of some that contain bonus live tracks recorded directly from the shows. They also have a Mystere: LIVE CD that is the music from a live production of Mystere. For those of you that say that the singers on stage in Varekai and the singers on the CD are the same? I hate to inform you that had you watched the reality show Cirque du Soleil: Fire Within, you would also know that this is not true. Leading up to Varekai's opening night they had a male singer from somewhere in eastern Europe and they let him go relatively soon before the show debuted and replaced him with another. And if you knew anything about showbusiness in general you would know that even if the original on-stage male singer for Varekai had been the same as the singer on the CD, he's probably been replaced by now, as Varkai's been touring for a few years.

Quidam's music can best be described as both an eclectic and esoteric mix. It would be very difficult to categorize the music on this CD into any one genre. From the rocking Zydeko to the beautiful song Seisouso, to the eastern European sounding Rivage, this CD will have something for everyone. And it is a must have for anyone who has seen Quidam.

Cirque Du Soleil (Quidam) wouldn't be such a hit without it's soundtrack. You can recapture the experience of the dark but lively mood through the tracks on this CD. Definately a collectible.

Album Description

The fifth studio album from Sweden's leading '90s prog rock group, a must for fans of Genesis & Pink Floyd. The band's guitarist, Roine Stolt, is often compared to Jeff Beck, Steve Howe, Carlos Santana and Alan Holdsworth! 143 minutes of music on two discs. 31 tracks. Double slimline jewel case. 1999 release.

Flower Power is a great progressive rock double album. There is a wide variety of tunes with long jams and well written lyrics. It reminds my of the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

4 out of 5 stars The Flower Kings - Get A Bit Overblown On This One.......2007-03-10

Wow, this band certainly is prolific. After releasing a full double album's worth of music in 1997 with "Stardust We Are" the band comes back with another 2 hour plus double album of new music again in 1999. "Flower Power" would showcase the best and worst of what The Flower Kings are all about. There is some absolutely marvelous material to be found here, but there is just so much of it that there is bound to be a certain amount of filler. The band throws everything plus the kitchen sink to the listener and hopes most of it sticks. The whole first disc (sans the last 8 minutes) is comprised of "Garden Of Dreams", an hour long whopper of an epic that harkens back to the days of "Tales From Topographic Oceans" era Yes and other long winded "masterworks". For me "Garden" is all a bit too much. There are bits and pieces that I really love, but it just goes on and on and on, almost it seems, for the sake of being long. There are Flower Kings fans out there that think this is the ultimate FK track, but for me it is just a bit too long winded. Tastes will certainly vary on this one. One thing that really stands out on "Garden" is Hasse Bruniusson's percussion work on the piece. Bruniusson is the former drummer for Samla Mammas Mana and has a very distinct style. Although he has played on previous Flower Kings albums, this is the first time where his presence is really noticed and he does add interesting and innovative percussive flourishes to the piece. The last 8 minutes of the first disc consists of the track "Astral Dog". It is not really apparent why this was tacked on to the end of the big epic, but it is actually a cool little instrumental ditty that sees Roine Stolt plying in a style similar to Joe Satriani or Steve Vai. It is very different from what FK fans may be used to with Stolt, but further showcases his amazing versatility. The second disc is very different from the first comprised of mostly shorter material (although two tracks break the 10 minute barrier), and for the most part a bit more commercial. I enjoy the poppier side of The Flower Kings and tracks like "Stupid Girl", "Psychedelic Postcard", and "Magic Pie" are all cool little tunes. The rest of the tracks are all solid with a mix of instrumental and vocal tracks. Overall this is not one of my favorite Flower Kings albums, but it is still certainly worth owning and I can see where this could be many fans most enjoyable disc, all depending on personal taste.

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes very good, sometime amazing.......2007-02-06

Some extract of the Garden of Dreams suite are really impressive musically. some top quality vocals and harmonies with great musical complexity.
This is one of the best cut from the Flower Kings and it is an hour long.
So just for this one, the album worth its price.
The CD number two is good but not as great as the first one, in my opinion. I would say that it is 50% of very good stuff, and 50% to fill the CD. Overall, another great album from the band.

3 out of 5 stars Why can't these guys just be instrumental...or at least write lyrics that don't suck?!?.......2006-10-14

Let's face it. Even the most pedestrian non-discerning listener could find something ridiculous while flipping through the lyric books of any Flower Kings album. On pretty much every disc that Roine and Co. have ever done (including Karmakanic's two, the new Kaipa albums, all three Tangent albums, the lyrics are downright stupid and childish, filled to the brim with rotten cliches, dime-store philosophy, nickel-store theology, not to mention a number of unreadably unusual lines. I hate to rant on this, but they are such well-developed musicians and arrangers that they should just shelf the damn concepts and melodrama and stick to making great music. 'Flower Power' is so hard to enjoy when it's plagued by crapola like 'So you think that I 'has been'/I'd rather say an Evergreen' or 'So wave your little wand now, The Brimstone Blanket.' They should have also done something a little better with the artwork and the title of the album. The subtitle 'A journey to the hidden corners of your mind' reeks of mindless pretension and makes the album seem like a complete joke before you've even heard it. I agree with another reviewer that the Flower Kings are very similar to writers like Robert Jordan and Terry Goodkind, whose ability to write well is diluted miserably by their adherence to the genre they're trapped in. This is seen with the Flower Kings in their apparant obsession with carrying other musical torches (be it Yes, Genesis, Zappa). The presentation is there, but the enjoyment takes an awful lot of perseverance on the listener's part.
Overall, like all of their other discs, the music is really well done and well-recorded. This album would just be a lot better without the vocals period.

2 out of 5 stars Pop Prog.......2006-02-16

Lots of high end prog rock musicainship for sure but if "Flower Power" is a typical Flower Kings album ( this is the only one I've heard) then I have to say the guys lack good taste. Although the album contains many soulful and uplifting moments, the overall effect is undermined by insipid lyrics and musical cliches gleaned from the worst of 70's pop. I was hoping for a comparison with classic Yes but this is more like Styx or late Kansas.

The lead vocals sounds too run of the mill for my taste and would be better suited to an Andrew Lloyd Webber rock opera.

5 out of 5 stars The Flower Kings - One Of The Band's Best.......2007-03-09

"Stardust" is the album where The Flower Kings really hit their stride. It remains one of the best in their catalogue and contains what is probably my all time favorite Flower Kings song, the 25 minute epic title track "Stardust We Are". It is really interesting reading other reviews of this album. Some FK fans absolutely hate it, while other love it. For some the title track is overblown and pretentious, for others (myself included here) it is soaring, bombastic, and a perfect slice of prog. It never fails to amaze me how different everyone's taste can be. For me "Stardust We Are" is the ultimate Flower Kings album. The material is spread out over 2 discs and this whole thing runs close to 2 hours. Disc one is loaded with Flower Kings classics opening up with the rocker "In The Eyes Of The World" which has remained a live staple to this day. "Church Of Your Heart" is a 10 minute ballad, that although instrumentally is nothing spectacular, has beautiful vocals from Roine and Hans Froburg. The 12 minute "Circus Brimstone" may be one of the best instrumental tracks the band has ever done. The closer "Compassion" is prime Roine Stolt and a nice way to end out the disc. Disc 2 is not quite as strong in the first half with mostly shorter songs that vary in quality. But the big highlight on disc 2 is the 25 minute title track "Stardust We Are". To me, this is what classic progressive rock is all about and the track contains everything I love about prog rock. Instrumentally the whole band shines on the various instrumental sections of the disc. The vocals, especially delivered on the soaring finale, by Hans Froburg are simply gorgeous full of bombast and splendor. The band has often used "Stardust" as the closing number for their live shows and it is even more effective in a live setting. "Stardust We Are" remains one of my favorite Flower Kings discs and is a must own for fans of the band.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best of the Flower Kings.......2007-01-30

This is an amazing album from the beginning until its magestic ending, the Epic "Stardust we are" You should listen to it at least five times before you begin to catch it, but it worth the effort. "In the eyes of the world", "Just this once","Church of your heart" "Circus Brimstone", "The end of Innocence" to name a few. The closing one is a masterpiece, "Stardust we are" one of the best ever wrote in prog music.

2 out of 5 stars Like shaving with a dull razor.......2006-11-09

I thought I'd try the Flower Kings, as a more modern prog rock selection. I'm not impressed, there's no moodiness or edginess in this album at all. Very much sugar coated and uninspiring.

4 out of 5 stars A Flawed Masterpiece.......2006-01-17

I've had this album for almost 4 years now, and have listened to it off and on. Of all the albums in my collection, this one is quite possibly the most mixed. This is the kind of album, at least for me, anyway, that a few of these tracks, alone, make the album not only worthwhile, but one of my most treasured in my 500 album+ collection. Unfortunately, quite a few of the other tracks are so hiddeous that I have not listened to them for probably over 3 years. These guys are best when they're doing instrumental stuff. Roine's vocal quality is, "odd" to say the least. The lyrics range from "decent" to "nails on a chalkboard". And aside for the amazing openner, "In the Eyes of the World", the music in vocal tracks tends to get dumbed down to make room for vocal melodies.

For this reason, there is one track that stands head and shoulders above all the others, "Circus Brimstone", which, after a minute and a half of winding up, transforms into an amazing whirlpool of instrumental glory. 2/3rds the way through, when it feels like everything has been said and done, they slow down a little, only to ratchet things up a notch for another whole section, some of the most heavy handed, intense stuff I've ever heard. Another absolute keeper is the preceding track, "The Man Who Walked with Kings", an absolutely gorgious 7/8 instrumental with a souring anthematic melody to end all melody lines. The openner, "In the Eyes of the World", which begins the ongoing circus theme on the album, is another standout track.

Then there's the epic title track, which although having some absolutely stunning material, contains some of the biggest musical flaws of any prog epic. As with the rest of the album, the instrumental sections (of which there are many) are brilliant; topped off by a stunning solo piano section. Unfortunately, the piece suffers from "Pick up and Move" syndrome. After said piano section, suddenly we are faced with one of the most jarring and out of place modulations (transition) that could have possibly been produced which almost destroys the piece's integrity. It doesn't help that the following section has some of the cheesiest vocal material on the entire album: "So don't forget the human touch, the word of mouth, this roundabout, we love so much... Stardust We Are!" It's hard to stomache, and for the supposed climax of the 25 minute epic, and arguably the album as a whole, it's pretty weak and extremely trite.

Unfortunately, there are many other points that the band falls into mindless, teary-eyed, overdramatization. Take "Church of Your Heart"; for a piece clocking in at over 9 minutes, has probably the least amount of musical material of any song on the album, it's just boring, and the lyrics are god aweful. Though, for some reason, a lot of people seem to like it, however, so I may be in the minority here.

On the other hand, I don't really mind the short "filler" tracks on the album, many of them are quite nice, and offer a bit of "down time" from the rocking miniepics. There are many of them, however, so if that's an issue for you, you probably should be aware of it.

So, in the end, I find it to be a fairly weak album with some incredibly amazing material. I have a feeling that, being a post vinyl-era band, The Flower Kings don't really believe in "B Sides", and slapped everything they wrote since the previous album onto one two-disc set. There's not really a problem in that, but you may find, as I did, that you'll be better served in picking out one disc worth of material and making your own album from it.

5 out of 5 stars NEOPROG RAN HIGHEST PRAISE.......2005-05-17

IT WILL BE HARD TO TOP THIS ONE. GREAT CD WITH ALL THE ELEMENTS OF A PROG CLASSIC. I CAN'T UNDERSTAND HOW ANYONE THAT LOVES 70S PROG CAN ACTIVELY DISMISS THIS BAND. JUST BECAUSE THEY STARTED PROGGIN IN THE 90S DOESN'T MEAN THEY AREN'T AS RELEVANT. BESIDES, STOLT WAS IN A PROGRESSIVE BAND IN THE 70S (KAIPA)- SO THERE PEBOZO. REDBONE WAITS FOR YOU.

My family and I saw this show in Orlando and were speechless. Not only was the show visually magnificent, but the music was top shelf. I've never seen or heard any Cirque du Soleil programs before - but highly recommend this. It's odd and eccentric, but also moving and captivating. If you've seen La Nouba, you will travel back to it through your memories while listening to this CD.
