Place with Life

Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Euphoria, love, broken-heartedness, abandonment, and a hard-nosed stance toward life are major themes that Paul Alexander builds upon in his debut CD, "Place With Life," which includes songwriting influences of the in-depth feelings often written about in Billy Corrigan’s and Perry Farrell’s songs to the melodies and sounds of artists like Depeche Mode, Enigma, and Dead Can Dance. But these songs are all Paul’s own. In fact, this album is (largely) a look at his own life in the last 3 years, as well as the lives of people who are (or at one time, were) important to him, or influenced him in an important way. Paul shares the wisdom he has gathered in his own life in a meaningful way with you. Although these are his experiences, they could very well (and very likely at some point) be your own.

For example, in featured songs like: "Your Guide for Once," Paul talks about the time(s) we have all faced when we want someone to come back who has either left or has never given their own feelings a chance. It can be even more painful to realize that the person(s) you care about are ignoring their own feelings more than your own. At times like these, we need to look within and motivate ourselves to rise to new levels of belief and awareness that we control our own lives and destinies. Paul illustrates these important points in his new album, adding his own personal knowledge, and reminding people that developing some type of spiritual awareness in their lives (even if it is not necessarily "religious") will always see them through.

Paul Alexander’s introspective journey reminds us that our lives are made up of hundreds of different elements, issues, trials, and tribulations. He reminds us that we control our own lives and destinies, as well as determine what we make of them.

Album Description
Paul Alexander creates an Alternative/Electronic musical and lyrical examination of the many trials and tribulations that we are dealt in life, along with the periods of happiness and bliss we experience as well. Broken-heartedness, abandonment, love, and the concept of an emotional paradise on Earth are themes that Paul builds upon in this album.

Place with Life, Music, Paul Alexander, Alternative/Electronic melodies and driving rhythms combine to create an unusually blissful album packed with hard-nosed lyrical wisdom and guidance regarding life's major highs and lows, including the ecstacy and misery in relationships.

5 out of 5 stars "themes & cues savor the romantic that dwells in all of us".......2005-04-12

What a crowning achievement to bring "Reel Love: The Cinematic Romance Album", released by Silva America and featuring The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus ~ conductors are Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine and David Temple director of the chorus ~ one can only expect the highest quality of performances and quench the thirst of all "film-score-buffs".

4 out of 5 stars Better than most all the ordinary FF soundtracks.......2007-01-24

First of all, people seem to be overly critical of the choir. They say that it sounds out of tune or whatever, but this is only because they were recorded live. In Advent: One-Winged Angel, the same choir sounds totally incredible. The choir itself isn't bad, it's the recording environment that was not so hot.
That said, I can say that this is a very impressive two CD set, even though several of the songs I don't recognize. The music is professionally composed and arranged, and just goes to show that Final Fantasy music is proffesional level. The only cons are the lesser sound quality of being recorded live and the MC tracks, which can get to be a bit long. The way they keep talking makes me really want to know what they're saying. My favorite pieces are:
1. One-Winged Angel: I do admit that the FFVII Reunion Tracks arrangement is better, but only because of the recording environment. This arrangement has a lot of cool new elements and an awesome sound. The only problems I see with this arrangement is the absent-minded microphone placement and a bit of background shuffling that is heard at one part. The shuffling is very quiet and you get used to it, but I'm just picky about these things. As for the microphone placement; whoever put one right next to the #%@$in' snare drum deproved the quality of the piece a bit much. The snare drum during the chorus is louder than any of the other parts, and the choir is already being a bit overpowered by the orchestra. This makes for a choral section that isn't heard well enough. Despite all these slight cons, however, this arrangement of the classic piece remains superb and awesome-sounding.
2. Liberi Fatali: Same choir rant as before. This arrangement doesn't sound quite as good as the original, but it's not really that different, it's still an incredible piece.
3. Melodies of Life: This arrangement is better, I think, than the original except for the singing. She sounded a lot more confident in the original. But aside from that, this song is a great classic.
4. Suteki Da Ne: The original was quite a bit better, both in sound quality and in the singing. Rikki was nervous during the performance, it is shown by her incessant breath-taking in the middle of phrases and low confidence in her voice. However, the instrumentation does sound nicely different in some spots, and Rikki's singing is still beautiful.
This album is a must-have for any FF freak, and is better than most all the ordinary FF soundtracks. Don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD........2004-02-23

Firstly, Mr. Gibbs -- why would anybody buy this if they haven't played Final Fantasy games?

Secondly, this is an amazing CD. With the exception of One-Winged Angel, every track on this CD is (in my opinion) the best orchestral version of these songs ever done. And this is coming from somebody who owns Celtic Moon, Grand Finale, Fithos Lusec, and a smattering of Orchestral Game Concert CDs.

Do yourself a favor and buy this CD. It really is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars For those who wanna get their FF orchestra groove on..........2004-02-20

Final Fantasy 20020220 is worth buying. It is a great CD to listen to if you want to hear orchestrated versions performed live, mistakes and all. That said, let me point out everything that is wrong with the performances, and why I did not give 20020220 a 5/5. As partial as I am to Final Fantasy music, I must criticize the singing in this performance. In both tracks that featured a choir (Liberi Fatali and One Winged Angel) it seemed like everyone was trying to outsing each other, the tenors in particular would sing awfully loud, while everyone else was drowned out. The soloists RIKKI and Emiko Shiratori did a fabulous job, in my opinon. Others said that they sounded nervous, I do not agree. The actual performance by the orchestra was brilliant. I especially liked Liberi Fatali, One Winged Angel, and Vamo' Alla Flamenco. I wish I could speak Japanese, because 8 of the 25 tracks on the 2 disc set are nothing but the concert MCs talking about stuff. All in all I would like to restate that FF20020220 is worth buying, but maybe you should play some of the FF games to hear these songs before you listen to the orchestra version, all the more to appreciate this masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars The Fantasy Continues..........2003-06-10

Nobuo Uematsu truly holds true to the Final Fantasy music legacy he himself set down beginning with the Final Fantasy Symphonic Suite CDs. Although I do have a few complaints, my overall take on this album is extremely positive. I'd say my favourite renditions on this CD are "Vamo' Alla Flamenco", lush, rich arrangement for orchestra (which truly is the greatest symphonic rendering I've seen from almost any game composer [thanks to Shiro Hamaguchi]) and the brass-graced Final Fantasy VI's "Terra" / "Tina" (which almost lives up to the Grand Finale version). Basically, every single song on these two CDs were mind-blowing with the exceptions of the two most crucial ones, "Liberi Fatali" and "One-Winged Angel". Okay, fine... I've got to give credit where credit is due, Liberi Fatali isn't THAT bad. It falters near the end though, but the primary complaint isn't the symphonic elements (or even the annoying snare [?] drum... *grrr*), but rather the supposed choir they assigned. Not very harmonic or in-tune, but I still give it 4-stars.
To sum it all up, all very nice arrangements with those little differences which make it all the more enjoyable. Cons? The choir voices and the MC segments (I don't speak Japanese, so my apologies if you do and find them entertaining).

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best (non OST) Final Fantasy works.......2003-02-19

There hasn't been a live CD since the ill-fated "Symphonic Suite" many years ago and now there is this - quite simply put a live version of some of the best Final Fantasy songs. The Tokyo Philharmonic is on every beat and adds alittle more to the Final Fantasy melodies. The MC's get annoying and their Japanese is very hard to understand. The choice of songs was superb yet there is no "live feel" as most of the songs are played just as you would have heard them on another Final Fantasy CD. All in all, this is one of the best and one can easily see by some of its few flaws to its real beauty - the epitome of Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy work.

5 out of 5 stars Why is this out of print?.......2007-04-22

This is an excellent collection and it is a shame that this is out of print here in the US. no fear though, it is still in print in the UK, and simply point yourself to amazon.co.uk or Silva Screen's own website listed in the other review, and pick this up.

What is included here you may wonder? This included most of the tracks from Silva's 1993 collection of Max Steiner themes and suites recorded with the Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra. The Helen of Troy suite was not included because the producer was not happy with that suite. Likewise, a Summer Place has been replaced with new recordings by the Prague Philharmonic.

A number of the other tracks originate from Silva's second collection of Max Steiner themes and suites, released in 1997, only in the UK.

Adventures of Don Juan is from 1997's Swashbucklers of the Silver Screen, while King Kong is from 1998's Monster Movie Music Album.

The Searchers suite goes back to 1994 on Silva's excellent "Music from the Films of John Wayne" compilation.

The only new tracks here were the replacement tracks for A Summer Place, as well as The Charge of the Light Brigade

Silva has since recorded updated suites of Gone With the Wind and Casablanca, released in 2005 on The Incredible Film Music Box, but the suites included here from Kenneth Alwyn and the Westminster Philharmonic are more than adequate.

    5 out of 5 stars Magnificent!.......2006-06-07

This is simply a wonderful album. It is also an HDCD. It's wonderful to hear these pieces from long-gone but fondly remembered movies from my childhood. Luckily, some are reappearing on dvd. A definite 5 star album to treasure. Now, please note that the photo of the album is correct. However, the ones "available" from CDNOW Preferred Buyer's Club are NOT the correct album. I ordered it twice from them, and both times I got a single disc of a few excerpts from GWTW only. When I spoke with CDNOW, the rep told me he would notify amazon and have the listing changed, but they have not done so. The guy I spoke with at CDNOW recommended I try eBay, which I did, and I found a copy in England.

5 out of 5 stars "The Godfather of film scoring of historic proportions".......2001-10-10

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, one composer stands above the rest ~ Max Steiner...you gave the usher your ticket in the theatre and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth, if the composer was Steiner...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes, you sat back and watched as the master, with baton worked his magic.

All twenty-six selections give you the feeling you've been there...but, the stand outs in my mind are ~ "KING KONG"..."ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN"..."THE FLAME AND THE ARROW"..."NOW VOYAGER"..."THE TREASURE OF SIERRA MADRE"..."CASABLANCA"..."THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE"..."THE SEARCHERS"..."A SUMMER PLACE"...and a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND", sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score.

Silva America as usual, has put quality into this 2-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra, The Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

One note, on Disc Two for "SPENCER'S MOUNTAIN", the opening introduction used by Steiner is, "AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL, for Mr. Steiner was a patriot and loved this country so, during these trying times today, this seems to be the realizations of all Americans, more than ever!

        Product Description

Regenerator has been ripping up European dancefloors for years; now their invasion of North America begins the release of their fourth album, Debugged. This amazing CD takes the traditionally cold genre of electro-industrial music and introduces warm melodies, creating a highly engaging listening experience that is inherently powerful both musically and lyrically. Alternating abrasive male and beautiful, ethereal female vocals further this unique contrast, making Regenerator one of them most intriguing and exciting bands on the scene today.

          Product Description

Jared (the frontman of the beckoning), is an expressive and impressive singer/songwriter, that won't be pigeonholed into one musical genre any time soon. His eclectic sound, boasts a combination of blues, folk, and rock, resonating with fans of Jeff Buckley, Thom Yorke, and Beck, his musical inspirations. Studying with Grammy nominated songwriter Chris Cunningham and Grammy Award winner Kevin Bowe, Jared has learned to write and perform songs that may be described as haunting, passionate, evocative, and honest all at once. Though his age is young (22), his lyrics display a mature and distinct style. With heart-felt songwriting and an aggressive vocal style that is as urgent as it is soulful, the beckoning's performances offer more than the standard bill-of-fare of most singer/songwriters. Capturing the edgy quality of rock, the simplicity and sensitivity of folk, and the musicality of blues, Jared is able to create songs that offer the listener an escape from musical boredom. Trite lyrics, simplistic instrumentals, and halfhearted showmanship are not part of Jared's future in music. Instead, the words 'impressive', 'captivating' and 'amazing', are just some of the comments you will continue to hear from critics and audiences alike when this singer/songwriter takes the stage. the beckoning's highly anticipated debut album "Lilydale Road" will transcend all traditional musical boundaries and establish Jared as an up and coming musical innovator.

5 out of 5 stars Great debut CD.......2005-06-23

Amazing cd, its very creative and it has several different types of music that I like. The lyrics probably make the cd as good as it is. Its worth listening to the cd focusing on what the artist is portraying. For a new artist this cd has a lot of potential and is a must recommend from me.

          5 out of 5 stars wow!.......2005-06-11

I like to buy indie music. And every once and awhile, I come accross a gem. This guy is crazy good. Radiohead meets Damien Rice, kind of stuff. Hope the word gets out on these guys. I'm glad to be the first to post a message. All and all, this album came way out of left field, and for that, I love it.
