Album Description

Junior Brown, the multi-dimensional Americana/honkytonk artist who dazzled fans in 2004 with his Telarc debut, Down Home Chrome, ratchets up the intensity with Live at the Continental Club: The Austin Experience, a richly layered set that captures the witty songcraft and mind-bending fretwork that have become his trademark in the live setting.

5 out of 5 stars This Man's a Genius.......2006-12-30

I "discovered" Junior Brown about 6 months ago when CMT ran the video of (his song) Highway Patrol. At first the quirky black and white presentation caught my eye while the solid beat caught my ear. Then Junior ripped into his Guit-Steel solo and I was mesmerized. I love good guitar playing, and style (Jazz, Country, Rock)doesn't really matter to me. If it's well played I'll listen to it. Anyway, I wanted to pick up a Junior album with Highway. I settled on this one. When I bought it, I listened to it about four times in a row all the way through, and then ordered another Junior Brown CD. If you can appreciate good guitar and real musical talent then you won't be disappointed by this album. I think I know good music when I hear it, and I can summarize this album and Junior Brown in one sentence: This Man's a Genius.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-10-19

I was there the night he recorded this album, I was walking down South Congress when I heard that guitar and a super deep voice. I'm a long time Junior Brown fan, so needless to say I freaked out when I walked up to the Continental Club to see the man himself was on stage. The price at the door was about $25, so this album is a bargain.

3 out of 5 stars Should have been better, but this will have to do........2006-09-27

This is a tough review for me to write as I am a total Junior Brown fanatic. I've seen him play many, many times and I've been waiting for a live album forever. Unfortunately, this wasn't his best night. You have to understand Junior is constantly touring - how he is able to get up on stage night after night after night playing the same songs is beyond me, but I'm still happy to hear him in whatever town I'm lucky to catch him in. For the most part Junior sounds tired on these tracks (he sounds great on "Juan Charasquado" though). Maybe he ought to take a few months off and let his batteries recharge or something. I wish he'd included "Freeborn Man" on this cd - the difference between the studio version and live is huge; I've heard him play what can only be described as an incredibly intense, blistering version of it live that had me shaking in ECSTACY - but it is not here. It's GREAT to hear "I Want To Live and Love Always" live, but it just isn't as good without Steve Layne playing and singing along. The "Rock and Roll Guitar Medley" is always a treat but it would have been SO MUCH BETTER if "Ghost Riders In The Sky" and Sergio Leone western themes were included again in the mix (hint, hint Jr. for future road dates).

3 out of 5 stars Better to see him live than to listen to this live disc............2006-07-25

I have seen Junior Brown live a few times and I am always amazed at his guitar prowess, however I am very disappointed in this particular release:

1-First of all its only 52 min. long. A cd has about approximately 79 minutes of available space, and with Junior's songs being relatively short, there could have been 25 minutes more music on here.

2-The set list isn't the best.....there are MANY definitive Junior tracks which don't show up here at all.

3-Aside from the last track (Rock and Roll Guitar Medley) the performance here is rather lifeless, the singing sounds tired and strictly by the numbers....no flash, electricity or energy Junior usually provides in his LIVE shows...on this, he tends to simply 'phone it in'.

I really love Junior Brown and his music/guitar abilities, but this disc doesn't not reflect his ability as a performer, just that of a guitar picker.

4 out of 5 stars Junior Brown Live is an alopated, psychotronic, swampadelic experience!.......2006-03-24

The Man of 'Guit-Steel' does it again. I saw him once
in Virginia Beahc, VA at the Naval Base in an outdoor
free show! I would have paid hundreds, though. He and
his band are excellent and he is very funny and enter-
taining as well, "Get that hippie off stage". No way!

5 out of 5 stars criminally overlooked.......2001-12-20

Paul Kelly is undoubtedly the most negligently overlooked Australian artist there is. One can argue with the song selection on his recent greatest hits compilation, but the songs chosen for this live effort all hit the mark. Alternatively acoustic and then some great guitar based interpretations of well chosen, sensational studio songs - this warrants repeated listenings. It is the Kelly album that I nominate when anybody asks where to start on this artist. Standout tracks are Dumb Things and When I First Met Your Ma. As a group of songs, this is also the best live album I own period, the closest being early Neil Young.

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2001-11-22

This is Paul Kelly at his very best. It captures the spirit of his live performances, at the peak of his career, and features extraordinary performances of 'Just Like Animals', 'Pouring Petrol On A Burning Man' and the heartbreaking 'Maralinga'.

It probably helps to have heard the originals of some of the songs on this album such as 'To Her Door', as he varies them a bit in these live versions, but if you're already a P.K. fan then this is - absolutely - his best album. We have over 4,000 CDs at home, and this is easily our most-played CD.

5 out of 5 stars The secret is out.......2000-04-15

Run, don't walk, and buy this CD. This is Paul at his best---funny (Dumb Things), tongue-in-cheek (God's Hotel) and socially conscious (Maralinga). Pouring Petrol on a Burning Man has a groove you won't soon forget. "Under the Sun" is my favorite Paul Kelly album, and many of its songs are reworked here to great success. Actually the best live CD I own.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritually uplifting.......2000-02-10

This CD has some truly brilliant tracks. My favorites are When I first met your ma & To her door. The stories they tell and so well written they will make you laugh and cry. The music will bring a lump to your throat.

Paul Kelly is a great singer/songwriter who has been known and respected in Australia since the early 80's. His music ranges from folk/country through blues to recent foray's into techno music. This is a great album to listen to if you're feeling down, and I recommend a walk in the park afterward to complete the sensation!

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic snapshot of Australia's best kept secret.......1998-09-21

Paul Kelly has put out many fantastic recordings but this live CD has an appeal all it's own. Many of the older songs feature new arrangements and surprises. The intimate audience adds flavor to this performance and begs the question...."Why is Paul Kelly unknown?!?!"

5 out of 5 stars Honky Tonk Forever!.......2007-02-26

Outstanding, marvelous, this is another excellent exemple what Country Music should be always about. Steel Guitar (Rick Davis, Dale Watson Steel Guitar Man), Telecaster, Fiddle, Piano, Bass and Drums played by the right people makes a perfect combination for real good music, and Miss Leslie & Her Juke Jointers is part now of my personal collection of Country Music. This Live album has a very good quality of recording and I recommend seriously to anyone who likes Hard Core Honky Tonk Music the purchase of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Real Country Music.......2007-01-13

Honky Tonk Happy Hour is one of those country albums that make the listener realize just how bad country radio is today. Miss Leslie & Her Juke-Jointers make some of the finest honky tonk music in the country today and yet mainstream country radio stations continue to ignore them. That's a real shame because country fans outside of Texas for the most part still don't know what they're missing when it comes to Leslie and this great country band.

Miss Leslie does a better job on a George Jones song than any other lady I can think of, and there are three of them in this live album: "Everything Ain't Right," "Things Have Gone to Pieces" and "Ship of Love." If you love honky tonk music and miss the days when you could hear it on your radio, this one's for you. Discover the sound of Miss Leslie & Her Juke-Jointers and you'll have something to take the place of that garbage that gets played on your local FM "country" radio station.

      Album Description

This collection brings together 2 distinct & individual jazz violinists on 1 CD. Stephane Grappelli, one of the all-time greats & the first to establish the violin as a jazz instrument, & Denmark-born Svend Asmussen, lauded as a top swing violinist from the mid-thirties on. These versatile violinists capture the intense gypsy spirit with songs such as Lazy River, Sweet Georgia Brown & Jean-Luc Ponty's Golden Green. Collectables.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Jazz Violin Greats.......2004-03-30

I bought this CD mainly to hear Svend Asmussen since I've read so much about him but never heard him play. He's good, but I prefer Grappelli's style. It was interesting though, hearing the two on the same CD for the sake of contrast. Asmussen had more classical training than Grappelli, as did Joe Venuti. That may help in some respects like tone, but somehow Stephane seemed to have more freedom of expression and creativity. Maybe the extensive classical training tends to inhibit that. Who knows?

The Grappelli tunes were performed in 1978 when he was 70, and he was as brilliant as ever. He is backed by Diz Dizley, the Django enthusiast responsible for his reborn career, on rhythm guitar throughout. The opening tune - I CAN'T GIVE YOU ANYTHING BUT LOVE - really swings with this arrangement. AS TIME GOES BY is as gracefully interpreted as I've ever heard. CRAZY RHYTHM is a true jazz piece, with the double bassist Brian Torff playing four beats per measure. John Ethridge provides some great acoustic guitar accompaniment on Jean-Luc Ponty's GOLDEN GREEN, which features Grappelli's magical touch with embellishments and harmonics. CHATANOOGA CHOO-CHOO is a great piece for Grappelli, although I don't recall him recording it very often. Check out the train whistle at the end. Why should bluegrass fiddlers be the only ones who get to do train noises? BLUES IN G FOR B.T. was written by Grappelli for bassist Brian Torff. It starts off as a blues number, but soon transitions into a swing tune in true Grappelli fashion. The last piece - NUAGES - was performed in memory of Stephane's old friend and music partner who composed it, Django Reinhardt, on the 25th anniversary of his death. Hard to imagine a more fitting or tastefully played tribute.

Svend's performances begin with JUNE NIGHT, a sort of soft-shoe number shared with the pianist Derek Smith. Next is SWEET GEORGIA BROWN, a tune Grappelli played at nearly every gig. Notice how different it sounds, though, with Svend's approach accompanied by guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli and Smith with a clever solo on piano that includes a phrase from Rhapsody in Blue. Svend comes across more as a member of a band than a featured artist. LAZY RIVER also displays liberal doses of piano and guitar, along with some jazzy pizzicato licks and a short drum solo by Ollie Jackson. NADJA and BLUE PRELUDE are eerie tunes in minor keys, somewhat of a departure in this set. JUST A GIGOLO is a low key rendition of this old classic. Great guitar solo here. CARELESS LOVE goes from 0 to jazz in less than 50 seconds. A PRETTY GIRL IS LIKE A MELODY, the Irving Berlin classic, is the weakest number in my opinion, although the piano solo seems to salvage it. WHEN DAY IS DONE starts off with some excellent solo work, indicitave of Svend's classical training, altough it doesn't take long for him to abandon the classical sound in favor of jazz and blues. HUSH-A-BYE, a lullaby with a gypsy flavor, has a real nightclub sound to it with brushes on the drums.

The contributions these two jazz violin greats have made to the music world will be around for a long time, and I suspect this album will serve well as a representation of their art. Highly recommended.

This would be a great CD if only for the US introduction of the back up performers, The Rosenberg Trio. Add Grappelli to that mix and you get one ot the better swing recordings in the Hot Club style. We should only hope we are all as sharp as Grappelli at 85 years old. Also, look for other recordings by The Rosenberg Trio. Worth the look if you like Django-style swing.

5 out of 5 stars Ronnie Dawson at his very best.......2006-09-28

This is a great CD. I have most of Ronnie's CDs and this one is my favorite. The live atmosphere at the Continental Club brings out the very best from Ronnie and the band. His interactions with the band members prompt them to play like there is no tomorrow. I especially enjoyed the guitar/drum, "battle", between Ronnie and the fabulous Lisa Pankratz. The band is having fun and so will you.
