An American Picnic.......2002-08-11

I have three of the Dinner Classics. "Dinner For Two" "Romance"
and "A Cocktail Party" All are wonderful cd's and I would like to find more, other than what is listed here. "An American Picnic" is good but I like "Dinner For Two" the best.

Worth It.......1999-11-29

This album is one of the "must haves" in the great "Masterworks Dinner Classics" series. Beautiful!

The Best of Grieg's Best Piano Music.......2003-05-16

I love these pieces in moderation, and what better way to approach them than through this compendium of Grieg's ten books of Lyric Pieces? The best of each book is here, including "Elves' Dance," "Butterfly," "To Spring," "Herd Boy," "Norwegian March," "March of the Trolls," "Homeward," "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen," and "Puck." (Notice that I like the up-tempo ones, where Grieg has less of a chance of falling into salon-music doggerel.)

As to the performances, Steen-Kokleberg has great technique, which helps these pieces sound as effortless as they should. (Take "Brooklet" from Book 7: not an easy piece, but Steen-Kokleberg makes it burble most attractively among the rocks.) What's more, the pianist approaches the Lyric Pieces as if it's truly important music, and that keeps Grieg's idiom from seeming overly precious.

For collectors of historic recordings.......2003-02-04

If you are a collector of historic recordings, or an avid Rubinstein collector, than this record is for you. I, on the other hand, am neither, and I had trouble enjoying the Piano Concerto due to the poor sound quality of this 60-year old recording. The sound quality of the remainder of the disc was much better. So, if an "old" sounding record doesn't bother you, I'm sure you'll love it. I'm from the CD generation, and I'm going to look for another version of the Concerto.

Rubinstein Shines in Early Grieg Recordings.......2001-01-02

Arthur Rubinstein was midway through his 75-year-long performing career before he learned the Grieg Concerto. In his autobiography, he reports that he was under the then-common impression that the Concerto was "cheap stuff" and not worthy of his time. RCA wanted to record him playing the piece, and Rubinstein's wife liked the Concerto. She purchased the score and placed it on his piano. Reading through it, he realized it "was easy to play and lovable." Thus began a love affair that was to continue until the pianist's retirement in 1976.

This performance, recorded in 1942, was the first of four recordings of the work Rubinstein made--there is an additional, filmed performance from 1975. One can take the technical finish of this brisk, polished performance for granted. Not to be underestimated is the orchestral contribution. Eugene Ormandy, one of the most underrated conductors of the 20th century, was an especially sympathetic and gifted accompanist. He matches Rubinstein phrase-for-phrase, rubato-for-rubato.

The solo works on this album are taken from the legendary "Rubinstein Plays Grieg" LP recorded in 1953. This recording had the unique distinction of remaining in the active catalogue until the demise of the LP in the late-1980s. The performances here are as fresh, direct, and lacking in phony sentiment as the Concerto. It is a pity that Rubinstein was never persuaded to re-record these solo pieces in stereo, as there are always those closed-minded individuals who will refuse to purchase a mono recording, no matter how great the performance is.

Just As Its Title Says: CLASSICS IN AMERICA.......2004-08-19

OK, so all the "great composers" maybe weren't from Austria, Germany, or Italy. This CD, right here, justifies the quite justifable elitest attitude (also known as "Patriotism"). Maybe another title, "America's Greatest Hits" might have been appropriate, but then, a dunce or two would be whining for "A Horse With No Name," so "Classics" is it. Just look at who and what is represented on these cds: George Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue" (you might remember THAT if you saw "Fantasia 2000") Leonard Bernstein conducts his own beautiful "Dances From West Side Story" (he also conducted Gershwin). There's John Phillip Sousa's "Stars And Stripes Forever," a piece of music so beautiful, so astoundingly patriotism-inducing that it'd even make a.....democrat stand up with his hand over his heart! The ubquitous (and greatly missed) Bernstein conducts Ives' "Central Park In The Dark," and "The Unanswered Question." And that's just the FIRST CD! CAN you improve on perfection? CD #2 is a resounding YES! Here's Berbstein again conducting Samuel Barber's "Adagio For String," and Aaron Copland's beautiful "Appalachin Spring." And here's where the rest of the cd hits you like an enormous amyl-nitrate rush: Seiji Ozawa conducts the San Francisco Orchestra performing William Russo's unvbelievable "Three Piece For Blues Band And Orchestra." Ozawa, the story goes, enjoyed "going out for a cold one" after orchestra rehearsals, and he was especially was fond of a local blues band, The Seigel-Schwall Band. He commissioned his composer friend, William Russo, to compose something that the Band could could perfom with the orchestra. And I know you're thinking, "OH yeah, Procol Harum Live In Edmonton, 'Conquistador,' yeah." NO: As much as I ADORE Procol Harum, there is NO comparison! The Seigel-Schwall Band was strictly a BLUES band, and Russo - whew! composed three pieces that not only altered, but definitely enhanced the Band's electric blues. Like I'm so fond of saying,"By Alteration, Enhances!" My brother is a classically trained symphonic musician, and one time - wow, 25 years ago - he was playing "Three Pieces" on my battered stereo while I was in the shower. And I couldn't WAIT to "dry off," and run screaming in the romm, "WAHT IS THAT YOU'RE PLAYING?" Trust me on this folks, you won't believe it either - and you'll thank Heaven that it's on a CD, because if it was an album, you'd wear the grroves right out by replaying it over and over. And OLD ON, it ain't finished yet: the remainder of the CD features Arthur Feilder conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra performin 3 of the fantastically-talented but almost unknown, Scott Joplin. You remember that great piano music in the movie,"The Sting?" That was Scott Joplin - and he's represented here with "The Entertainer" (I dare you to keep from tapping your right foot when you listen to this),"The Sugar Cane Rag," and the "Maple Leaf Rag." The cd closes with an undiscovered GEM, excerpts fro Joplin's opera "Tremonshia."
This is pure, undiluted AMERICAN music, people. PLEASE do yourself a favor and put down the metal, the "alt," the rapping, the country 'n western, and even my beloved Rock and Roll for
about 2 and a half hours of some of the most incredible - and not THE LEAST BIT BORING! - Classical Music. Music that AMERICA was responsible for!

Eclectic collection of some well known and some previously unavailable works. The first appearance of the complete "Three Pieces for Blues Band and Symphony Orchestra" by Williams Russo and the Siegel-Schwall Band. Excellent recordings. Bargain price.

Arthur Rubinstein's 1941 Grieg Concerto, the first, and possibly best of his four recorded versions, is poorly transferred here, a problem one hopes will be corrected for BMG's upcoming complete Rubinstein edition. The pianist strikes a good balance between sensitivity and unbridled energy in a nicely contrasted set of Grieg's Lyric pieces and the underrated G Minor Ballade, which benefit from (relatively) superior engineering. --Jed Distler

Yes, if only Artur and Eugene could have recorded this colorful and bright concerto by Grieg with the best technology of the late 1990's, I would give this disc 5+ stars.

Artur has a way of dancing through the concerto -- sometimes lightly, sometimes more heavily -- that causes one to say "How could anyone do this piece any better than he?"

The solo piano works are no less brilliantly done. The Ballade is not lacking in power, it's just that a shallow sound never fails to show us the limitations that sound reproduction had in those days. Artur's Lyric Pieces are superbly interpreted in a graceful, poignant, and masculine manner.
