Customer Reviews:
masters of classical music.......2007-03-26
A nice collection for the classical listener. Great variety of composers and the music quality of the cds are very good.
A good basic collection.......2006-11-10
With selections from numerous composers, it is an easy way to familiarize oneself with some of the most popular classical works and excerpts. A pleasant listen for the initiated too.
An excellent introduction to classical music.......2006-10-18
This is an excellent introduction to classical music. Well performed and presented.
Very Beautiful!!!!!1.......2006-10-05
If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.
Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22
I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...
My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.
I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!
I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

One Mother of a Collection.......2006-12-31
This is the Motherlode of pre-war blues reissues. It is likely JSP's finest release to date. Paramount started business in Wisconsin as a furniture manufacturer in the late 1800's but figured that the demand for record playing machines ensconced in wood cabinets would create a new market for shellac and vinyl records as well. In spite of their hamfisted business practices (Paramount was bankrupt by the 1930's), they managed to get a whole lot of fabulous Afro-American talent to record for their label (thanks to talent scout J. Mayo Williams), the likes of Charley Patton, Meade Lux Lewis, Bo Weevil Jackson, Bumble Bee Slim, Moanin' Bernice Edwards, Little Brother Montgomery, Roosevelt Sykes, Charlie Spand, Papa Charlie Jackson, and of course, the peerless Geeshie (Geechie) Wiley. If you've never heard her "Eagles on a Half", you deserve to listen to it now. This set has 100 titles of some of the rarest blues ever recorded for just $25. Some of the 78's from which this collection was dubbed, sell on the collector's market for hundreds, even thousands of dollars a shot. In spite of the poor quality shellac that Paramount pressed their music on, the virtuosity of this music still comes through some 80 years later. Get it. You won't regret it. Similar material worthy of this set is contained on Yazoo Records "The Stuff that Dreams are Made Of", and Revenant Records "American Primitive, Vols 1 and 2".
Disappointing.......2006-07-21
After reading the other reviews, I was really looking forward to this collection. I am very disappointed. The sound quality is terrible. These are very old recordings and have not been treated well. Even with the restoration mastery of JSP, at least 50% of the tracks on this collection are painful to listen to.
Much More than I Expected.......2005-01-15
Of all these JSP box-sets I own, none has been a bigger surprise to me than this one. I bought this one as a curiosity but it is much more. Going by the tracklist there were a handful of people I knew, but most were new to me. If this exact same box had been released by another label and was more along the lines of $40 to $60 I would have never purchased it. Knowing JSPs reputation for quality transfers and low prices I just decided to go for it, hoping along the way that there would at least be 2 discs worth of stuff I enjoyed. "At least" certainly came true!
This may be the singlemost entertaining JSP box I own (given what they have released so far)! The sheer number and diversity of artists and styles presented here makes it possible to sit down and listen to this whole box in one sitting and all the way feel like you don't know what's coming next.
From songs you've never heard of (and may never hear elsewhere again), to songs with familiar themes, to a handful of tunes that are straight-up rip-offs of tunes by famous musicians, it's all here. King Solomon Hill's "Whoopee Blues" is probably my favorite rip-off tune here. It being Lonnie Johnson's "She's Making Whoopee In Hell Tonight". I say rip-off because I have to assume that Lonnie didn't see a penny worth of royalties from this cover of his tune.
That will be my only mention of specific tunes/musicians. The magic of this box is that it is about no one and everyone. There are a couple relative stars here (in the eyes of history), but for the most part these are musicians whose voices and work have been forgotten by time. You listen to this box-set and you'll be wondering why. More than being about any one person or any one style, this box is a tribute to an era and a culture. An era where music was like the work of that era itself... you made it your own self and you did it with your own two hands. A culture that made the most out of a horrendous situation that should have never existed in the first place.
As for the technical sonic quality, it is everything that is Paramount. Most of the sides contained here are in that "average to very good" range. A couple of them are cleaner than any other Paramount sides I have ever heard, and there are only a couple that could be considered in that "Wow even bad by Paramount standards!" range. If you already own a substantial amount of Paramount sides you have absolutely heard alot of things that sound alot worse than the majority of what is here. JSP has done another wonderful job with the transfers. I hope every single person at that label is proud of this box! Another thing that must be said is that if you like some pre-war stomp-down blues piano, this box is definitely for you.
If you've been eyeing this one and "Should I or shouldn't I??"... you should. You really should. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, to say the least.
5 stars - and a nobel prize.......2004-06-27
Wow! JSP certainly deserves some sort of award for making this historic collection available. If you're reading this, I assume you already know about the Paramount label, which recorded some of the greatest "race" (as they were called at the time) records ever. Superstars on Paramount included Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charlie Patton, and Blind Blake. The set collects many of the lesser known artists who recorded sides for the label. Someone more expert than me would have to verify this, but I imagine that some of these sides are being issued on CD for the first time ever. What's amazing is the consistency of quality and the originality and charisma of even the most obscure artists here. The variety makes this one of the most entertaining box sets I own. This is old-time blues of every kind: barrelhouse, delta, hokum, jazzy, gutbucket, you name it. I know it's saying a lot, but this belongs on your shelf not far from the immortal "Anthology of American Folk Muisc," and unlike that set you won't have to take out a loan to make the purchase. I have a very minor complaint that the notes jump from factoid to factoid and are somewhat confusedly written: a more well-written, thorough, and sequential history of the label and some of these artists would have been appreciated. But JSP did a great job with the music, and that's what counts. Superb!

The harmonica's not exactly an imposing instrument; who would guess that a pocket- sized hunk of metal could be capable of so much expression? Volume 16 of Rhino's Blues Masters series shows just how much; the harp can trade leads with the vocals (Jimmy Cotton Blues Quartet, "Cotton Crop Blues," Junior Wells Chicago Blues Band, "Help Me"), lay down a raw edge (Papa Lightfoot, "Jump the Boogie"), or play smooth as you please (William Clarke, "Pawnshop Bound"). As even a cursory examination of the above performers will indicate, the harmonica is well represented in all styles of blues; Jimmy Reed, Sonny Boy Williamson, J. Geils, and Howlin' Wolf appear here as well. As capable as a horn or guitar of carrying the lead, and infinitely more portable, the harmonica may well be one of the most expressive and versatile instruments out there, and More Harmonica Classics offers several excellent examples. --Genevieve Williams

Another fine sampler.......2004-08-05
You've heard that saying about a hundred monkeys clattering away at a hundred typewiters for a hundred years...I don't know excactly how it goes in English. Anyway, it seems that an ape called Jo Jo ended up writing a review rather than the collected works of William Shakespeare.
I mean, honestly...what do you think an album titled "Blues Masters vol. 16 - More Harmonica Classics" is?!
Well, never mind.
This is a very nice companion volume to Blues Masters vol. 4 ("Harmonica Classics"). Most longtime blues fans will own much or even all of this material already, of course, but beginners or "mid-level" blues fans should delight in the wealth of excellent material on this disc - aggressive up-tempo freight train harmonica and slow, smouldering fills and solos.
Most of the really big guns are here, like James Cotton, Slim Harpo, Little Walter Jacobs, Sonny Terry, Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells, white boy Paul Butterfield, John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson, and Aleck "Rice" Miller (Sonny Boy Williamson II).
And most of the more obscure stuff is very interesting as well: William Clarke's "Pawnshop Bound", Lazy Lester's rendition of "I Hear You Knockin'", a great, swaggering "The Briar Patch" by Gary Primich, Papa George Lightfoot's thumping "Jump The Boogie", a raw early electric blues with a gritty sandpaper vocal, and Doctor Isiah Ross' tough, energetic "Come Back Baby".
This is far from everything you need to know about blues harmonica, of course, and a couple of tunes were chosen for the harp playing rather than their overall musical quality, I guess.
But there is a lot of quality stuff here, making "More Blues Harmonica" a really good buy for all but the most hardcore blues fans (they'll own 9/10 of this stuff already).
thrash punk at its worst.......2004-02-07
I thought sublime was good, but this cd proved me wrong. Instead if hard core reggae rock, i was disapointed to hear stupid, painful, harmonicas. I mean it REALLY SUCKED. I mean by the time it was over, i had put at least 5 pairs of ear plugs on.
A Must for hamonicists and harmonophiles.......2002-01-17
This power-packed CD is a must for both players and lovers of the harmonica, particularly of the blues-harp variety.
Most all of the tunes here are listenable, but some mighty powerful stuff abounds. On Howlin' Wolf's number, he sounds as if he's playing 2 harps at once. Junior Wells, in his rendition of Sonny Boy Williamson II's "Help Me," does a moving tribute to Sonny II both vocally and harmonically (as Sonny II died shortly before this was recorded). Sonny I is well represented here with "Shake Your Boogie" (although his harmonica is drowned out by the other instruments in parts of this song).
The king of Country blues harmonica, Sonny Terry, does an amazing turn with "Hootin' Blues Pt. 2" which defies written description. Wisely, Magic Dick Seltzer's classing "Whammer Jammer" is also included, as it sounds as if this tune may have been inspired by the above-mentioned Sonny Terry tune (listen and compare).
So for anyone who likes good harmonica music, listen and enjoy. For aspiring harmonicists, you may have think you've got it down pat, but listen to this to see how far you still need to go.

Another Yazoo masterpiece!.......2006-07-17
This is not your usual blues cd. These aren't the typical blues artists you have heard about in books or television. Some of the guys only did 1 or 2 records, but they are KILLER! If you want a great introduction to the lesser known blues masters this is it!!
Excellent collection of lesser-known Mississippi bluesfolk.......2004-06-11
If you feel like you've exhausted all the Delta and Mississippi blues from Patton to B.B., listen to this. This disc contains many of the only recordings by obscure, but no less talented, artists of early country acoustic blues. You may have heard Geechie Wiley's "Last Kind Word Blues" on the film *Crumb.* If you saw the film, the song has probably haunted you ever since. Worth buying for that track alone.
Indispensable.......2001-09-30
Compared to the giants of delta like Charley Patton and Robert Johnson, the artists on this album are relatively obscure, but it is due more than anything of the random aspect of the destiny. With have Garfield Akers recorded as many sides as Chambre of wire (which did not record many commercial discs of pre-war period, but which appreciated a modicum fame during the rebirth the blue ones of years ' 60), it would have the respect which it deserves (I think it is better a guitarist than the Room). The same ones can be known as of any of the artists on here (not to mention many artists for the past several thousand years, but to think of that inserts too much). The inclusion of 6 ways above here by women cannot seem substantial, but it rather quickly becomes clear that the women were of importance equal for the men in the respect to blue of Mississippi (and, heu, of you know, the life and the basic rights and very which), and they more amply had been recorded, they would be regarded just as powerful of a musical force. Why the hell didn't record the value of hours of the airs of Geechie Wiley when they had the chance? How could they take it for granted? It is tragic, if you find this kind of tragic thing. If Wiley had just recorded a LP' S-value of material, it would be considered more significant than the evil of John, as single as the jump James, perhaps even while significant like Charley Patton. Ouais, I said it. I do not exaggerate. Unfortunately, it left only one handle on sides (the most included here) for the posterity, if the posterity exists in its case. The guitar playing and singing here is brilliant through and through, and the noise of these 78s is excellent (except, unfortunately, blue head of work "without mother of Elvie Thomas of child," which has the heavy external noise). The notes of covering are excellent, certain better notes of covering for an album of Yazoo. If you stumbled in this page for any reason, and clearly you have, you must buy this CD that you will not regret it. But if you regret it, do not carry not felt sorry for to me about it.
A Great Collection of Lesser-Known Bluesmen (and Women).......2001-02-10
I LOVE this CD! After you've been through all the Skip James, Son House, Charley Patton, and Robert Johnson, this is a great place to go. I was pleased to find the haunting Geeshie Wiley song "Last Kind Words" that was used in the documentary "Crumb". Also here is "Outside Woman Blues" covered by Eric Clapton in his Cream days. A great collection with great notes, Yazoo does it again!
Excellent overlooked early blues.......1999-03-31
This wonderful collection contains many relatively obscure but quite good examples of pre-war delta blues. Particularly noteworthy, in my opinion, are both tracks by Blind Joe Reynolds and the uniquely paced "Bullfrog Blues" by William Harris.

Product Description
Its hard to overestimate the impact of McKinley Morganfield on the Chicago post-war blues scene, and by extension on rocknroll itself. Having come from the heart of the Mississippi Delta (Rolling Fork), he spent the first 28 years of his life close to his birthplace, leaving for the Windy City in 1943.
With this set of recordings, which covers the years 1952-1958, we continue the survey of the complete recorded works of Muddy Waters in chronological order. The first fifty tracks of his Aristocrat/Chess career appear on Muddy Waters, Rollin' Stone: The Golden Anniversary Collection (MCA/Chess 2301-2); the present set continues to follow his musical development, and showcases the second fifty sides, picking up where the previous collection ended and spanning an important seven year period in his career.
Packaged in a bound booklet, replete with rare photographs and extensive liner notes, this set captures Muddy Waters at the height of his commercial success, and includes literally dozens of songs that influenced rock and blues performers right up to the present day.

Album Description
The Mannish Boys are one of the most universally praised new blues bands, both live and on record, since the heyday of the blues genre a half century ago, receiving virtually unanimous rave reviews from both the blues specialty press and general entertainment reviewers. The current edition of The Mannish Boys features a veritable one-band blues festival of talent; most of the members either lead or are integral members of other successful touring and recording bands. They've honed their blues to a brilliant edge through appearances before sold-out crowds and on festival stages in the U.S., Canada, and in Europe. Their new live recording, "Live & In Demand", captures The Mannish Boys at the top of their game at the 2005 Winthrop Blues Festival, rolling out their dynamic, non-stop, old-style 'blues revue' featuring acclaimed veteran bluesmen Finis Tasby, Johnny Dyer, Kid Ramos, Franck Goldwasser, Leon Blue, Randy Chortkoff, Richard Innes and Tom Leavey.

****1/2 - one of the best in the series.......2004-08-06
Not five straight stars, though...partly because the authentic Mississippi Delta stuff is interspersed with much more urban sounds from B.B. King and Albert King. And (very) electric Chicago-sides by Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, and Robert Nighthawk do much to blur the distinctiveness of this package.
But there's nothing wrong with the music itself. Delta legends Charley Patton, Robert Johnson and Son House are here, doing "Rattlesnake Blues", the eerie "Crossroads Blues" and the harsh "Preachin' The Blues" respectively. Muddy Waters' late-40s single "I Feel Like Going Home" is one of his finest early songs. And the awesome (and sadly underrated) Tommy Johnson is represented by two of his best and most impressive songs, "Big Road Blues" and "Cool Drink Of Water Blues" (the basis for Howlin' Wolf's "I Asked For Water").
The fidelity on the oldest recordings, particularly by House and Patton, is below par, obviously, but that's the case with every reissue of this material, not just this one.
The annotation is very good, as always with this series, and there are a few relatively obscure songs here which should please blues lovers (although seasoned blues listeners probably have most of this material already): "On The Wall", an energetic piano blues by Charley Patton-associate Louise Johnson, the acoustic "Catfish Blues" by Robert Petway, Rube Lacey's moody "Mississippi Jail House Groan", and Willie Brown's sandpapery rendition of the raw, Son House-like "Future Blues".
The newer material includes slide guitar master Robert Nighthawk's gritty "I'm Gonna Murder My Baby", and great songs by Elmore James, Howlin' Wolf, and Sonny Boy Williamson II. And the inclusion of the underrated and underrecorded Floyd Jones' "Dark Road" (another reworking of Johnson's "Big Road Blues") is an additional treat.
A great collection of music. Not the definitive word on Delta blues, obviously, and some of these songs, excellent as they are, have no business being on a compilation of "Mississippi Delta Blues". But still...great music.
Good Compilation, Two by Tommy Johnson.......2001-09-29
Still one of the best intro CDs to the blues. I'm knocked out by Tommy Johnson; he's the first two selections here. Charley Patton, but hey - what about that pivotal Willie Brown doing "Future Blues"? The liner notes are not circumspect in describing Louise Johnson's "performance" on "On the Wall". Another treat is two by Elmore James - 'specially "Something Inside Me" which floats along like Jimi Hendrix.
I never tire of this compilation.
Weird and Wonderful.......1998-08-12
Any Mississippi Delta Blues fan would have an awful time picking just 15 representative entries. This album does a great job, falling just short by including too much new material - by new, I mean after 1940. Still, you can't argue with Robert Johnson's "Crossroad Blues" or even Robert Nighthawk's superlative "Going Down to Eli's." This captures the individuality, roughness, and anti-spritiuality of Delta Blues really well and a couple of non-obvious inclusions like Robert Petway's Catfish Blues make it a good catch. Of the Blues Master Series, this is one of my favorites.

Customer Reviews:
"The original and best".......2004-08-05
Most of the numerous entries in Rhino's "Blues Masters" series are very good, and this one is no exception.
This 1993 volume brings together 18 classic blues songs, all of which have been covered in one form or another by other blues, blues-rock or rock n' roll artists. Bo Diddley's "I'm A Man" is the basis for Muddy Waters' "Mannish Boy", Arthur Crudup's "That's All Right" was covered by Elvis Presley (as you may know!), Led Zeppelin have covered (or just stolen) several of these songs (the Muddy Waters-single "You Need Love" became "Whole Lotta Love"), and the Allman Brothers Band did a great rendition of G.L. Crockett's excellent, underexposed "It's a Man Down There".
There are some top-notch classics here, as well as a number of more obscure but equally enjoyable recordings which will look at home on any blues fan's shelf. Most Yardbirds fans are probably unaware that the prototype for their song "Lost Woman" was an obscure Snooky Pryor single, "Someone To Love Me". And the original version of "Got My Mojo Working" is here...not by Muddy Waters, though, but by little-known jump blues singer Ann Cole.
A fine collection, mixing together famous standards and obscure gems with thorough liner notes. Longtime blues fans will have most of this music, of course, but more casual fans will find a lot of great stuff here.
4 1/2 stars. Excellent.

Hear the Classics!.......1998-10-17
Hear the songs before they were covered by the stadium rockers. Led Zeppelin covered "Bring it on home", "You Need Love" and " I Can't Quit You Baby" Countless bands have done of a cover of Elmore James' "Madison Blues." And of course, the Rolling Stones did a cover of "Love in Vain" So, if you want hear what influenced famous rock rollers, this is the album for you.
