Kicking in like a compellingly acrimonious version of Rush ("Megalomaniac") before meandering through what can rather uncomfortably be termed noodly, time-signature lottery jazz-metal terrain A Crow Left of Murder probably identifies Incubus as the average Pearl Jam fan's second-choice for chin-stroking mosh action. Brendon O'Brien (Soundgarden, Pearl Jam) produces and singer Brandon Boyd possibly fancies himself as a bit of a Vedder-esque sage, even blustering "My secret arsenal is an infinite ageless ink well" on the otherwise acceptable metal squawk of "Pistola".
Boyd obviously has big issues with the ills of the world but the lyrics to "Talk Show on Mute" (reality TV is bad, especially Big Brother) and "Zee Deveel" (nice cars, nice clothes and other status symbols are bad) say nothing to enhance mankind's understanding of these twin evils. Incubus are probably on firmer ground with "Made for TV Movie" (like "Megalomaniac" it's an anti-War-on-Terror diatribe) and musically they're to be applauded for sidestepping the prescripted expectations of the metal genre they've been saddled with. Ultimately, however, one's enjoyment of this record swings on whether one considers Brandon Boyd's societal musings to be deeply venerable discourse or just soppy waffle. --Kevin Maidment

Just not my favorite side of Incubus.......2007-07-17
I like the heavier side of them, not the experimental side. I was very hopeful that this would be a return to form (for me at least), and after I heard "Megalomaniac", I was excited about the possibilities, because that quickly became one of my favorite Incubus tracks. While this is far from a bad album, I kind of have to be in the right mood to listen to it, and if I feel like some Incubus, I'm more likely to go for the earlier stuff. There are some good songs on here, but to me, they don't have as much of a lasting impact as previous ones.
My Favorite Incubus Album.......2007-05-03
A lot of people I know were dissapointed with this album, but I really lie it. All of the songs are catchy in their own way. I remember Megalomaniac being played continuously on the radio and I was pumped because I loved that song...now I appreciate the others even more.
Favorite Songs:

Sucessful synthesis of mainstream intentions .......2007-04-24
Extremely solid alt-rockers 5th album continues to refine and expand the tight unit's special skill sets, of which rallied in funky aggression, dazzled with spacemath rock chops, and then settled into a more radio-friendly attitude yet still kept much of their compositional integrity. Mostly that relative longevity has always been made from Mike Einziger's passionate, intelligent riffage effectively balanced with Brandon Boyd's strong, inspired vocals and here is no exception. The albums standout tracks, amongst a general high quality, diverse and lengthy list, always include that magical interplay that has always kept the band emotionally gripping ever since they Made Themselves, but this outing proved their most successful pop experimentation to date. Every song can not be considered as compelling as the last, but all retain elements that make each of it's 14 tracks worthwhile listens in their lasting attempts at redefining the Incubus range. It would appear the first half really creates a stronger impression, but appropriate closing proceedings do round out the impressive release.
Favorite Incubus Album.......2007-04-10
This is one of the best Incubus albums ever created. Every Incubus fan needs to have this one.
Dissapointment all around.......2006-08-18
Ok theres only like 4 good songs on this cd: Megalomanic, Pistola, Sick Sad Little World and Zee Deevel. The rest of the songs are slow and void of interest, theres nothing that really takes off. Its a slow and more mainstreamed approach to rock. I love the other two incubus cds i have: Make Yourself and Morning View but this one just doesnt sit right with me. If you like the other two cds you may not like this, You have been warned but if you like soft jazz rock which never really lifts off the ground and feel like sleeping bring your pillow and a cd player and this cd and drift off to sleep. BTW (The look on your face after reading this review was 'PRICELESS')

Amazing.......2006-01-02
It did take me a while to get this latest piece of art from this amazing band, but it's happened. While I instantly loved S.C.I.E.N.C.E., Make Yourself, and Mourning View, it took me a few listens to absolutly love this album. When I first listened to it, the first, and only song that felt like Incubus was Megalomaniac. That dissapointed me, because its the album opener. But after my latest listen, I listened more critically, and now relize that this is yet another Incubus classic. The songs have a grand structure that their other albums lacked. They are less poppy, and more gritty sounding. The one HUGE problem I have with the album is that the bass is hardly audiable through Mike Einziger loud guitars. Einziger's work is among his best on this album, don't get me wrong, he's one of my favorite guitarists. The drumming is insanly fast and well paced and varried. Boyd's vocals are perfect for the songs, and his lyrics are refreshingly different. Incubus is one of the most talented bands in this day and age of no-talent acts. The fact that they change through every album they make proves they have a vast array of musical varriety. i hope that their new album (supposedly coming out late this year) is as good as this, and past releases. The album closer asks "The Ride's Over/ Did You...Enjoy Yourself??".....yes Incubus, yes i did.

Fan of Incubus or rock? Get this........2005-07-14
This CD is very good from start to finish. And it's got a little bit of what makes Incubus good. Despite being a little more slowed down than their previous CDs, "A Crow Left of The Murder" is still very good. [Not to mention the clever title]
The CD mostly contains alternative rock sounding songs like "Talk Shows on Mute" or "Agoraphobia". And then of course there's a more hard rock sound on "Megalomaniac" which has a nice little intro as well. Favorite song has to be "Southern Girl" [dare i say ballad??] which is also would fall into that alternative rock sound. Weirder songs like "Zee Deveel" and "Sick Sad Little World" just remind you why you liked Incubus in the first place.
One of my favorite CDs because of it's Red-Hot-Chili-Pepper like variety.
Not afraid.......2005-03-17
Incubus is one of the best because they are not afraid to take chances and mix things up. I'd highly recommend this album, along with Morning View. This album is a little harder than Morning View, but still has some softer songs thrown in. A true artist, Brandon writes thought provoking, beautiful poetry and turns it into great music. A true creative genius, he also collaborates on the bands art.
Incubus rocks.......2004-12-02
Out of all their CD's - i enjoyed this one the most (I have all of them). They truely are great. This CD has so much to offer, I let my dad listen to it and even he is a fan; he's 57. Also if you get a chance there is DVD/CD of one of their concerts that took place in Denver. With a combo of songs from all CD's. Check it out - I have watched it 9 times and I bought it 4 days ago.
it's Incubus.......2004-09-01
So, Incubus rocks no matter who you are or which of their albums is your favorite. Plainly put, this album was not my favorite of theirs. It's good. It's really good. But if you're expecting Incubus good, you'll be slightly disappointed.

A True Music Experience.......2005-03-26
This is the stuff!!! What an awesome production. If you really like to blast music 5.1 Digital and out your awesome surround sound system, this album is for you!! Incredibly rich and raw, incredible effects traveling around the speakers in my room, bass shuddering the walls, and my whole insides quivering with the rush that only Incubus can produce! This is really a completely different experience than just an audio CD in Dolby or something. Close your eyes and you'll think you're listening them jamming in your room. But if you just want that regular CD than the other side of the DVD contains the CD.
The DVD side has the whole album plus videos of Lollapalooza, Bridge Benefit, While We Were Out, and Brandon's Injury. A must have the music-experience-enthusiast and psychedelic journeyman!
Incubus changes again, big surprise.......2005-03-06
While this contains the exact same special features as the special edition, it's still worth buying for the surround sound included on the DVD side. This is Incubus' much anticipated follow-up to 2001's Morning View. While not garnering especially high praises this is definitely a worthy follow up. Anybody that is trashing this CD probably hasn't given it a chance to prove itself. Only after a few listens will you truly appreciate the brilliance that is brought to the table here. The production isn't polished at all, it's very raw. So much so that you can actually hear hand claps in a few songs. Personally, I think this unpolished side of Incubus is nice, I like it a lot.
With this release Incubus has matured even more than they let on in Morning View. You really wouldn't guess it with songs like Smile Lines and Leech though. Those two songs strike me as classic Incubus (though I realize I might be the only one that thinks that). Songs like Beware! Criminal, Agoraphobia, Zee Deveel, and Talk Shows On Mute strike me as different to Incubus' style. These songs lyrically are extremely strong but when first listening to them they seem stale, like they shouldn't be included on this CD. But over time I am willing to guarantee that at least one of the aformentioned songs will be one of your favorites. Every song on here has something special about it, Sick Sad Little World being the odvious stand-out with it's tremendous guitar solo. Not enough good things can be said about Mike's guitar work, it is incredible on this CD, though it doesn't seem to be getting the response I would think it should be getting. He experiments more with his pedals and style of playing more on this release than Morning View and even Make Yourself. You can tell this by listening to the solos on Sick Sad Little World and Priceless in particular. Brandon also kicks it up a notch and delivers vocally his best offering so far, and he uses his voice well too. As always Kilmore's turntables create an atmosphere to the music while never really busting out. Jose is at the top of his game on this release too, he seems to deviate from his treaded path and tries something new with this CD. And the new addition, Ben Kenney, fits in very nicely with the crew. While the bass isn't as prominent as it once was, it is very good nonetheless.
The DVD side is, much to my surprise edited, at least the one I got was. But other than that it's very entertaining with it's four live performances--Pistola, Megalomaniac, A Crow Left Of The Murder, and Talk Shows On Mute. The While We Were Out featurette is very funny as is with all Incubus behind the scenes footage though. I particularly liked the part where Jose talks about his new car, histerically funny. And of course Brandon's Injury. This is the part that is edited, which bugs me because I love hearing the way Brandon curses here. Also, if you have surround sound speakers wired to your DVD player than you are in for a treat, the CD sounds phenominal.
A couple of my favorite songs on here are Megalomaniac, Beware! Criminal, Zee Deveel, and Made For TV Movie. Anybody who truly appreciates Incubus' music will definitely seek refuge in this CD. It's got a bit of everything in it, so enjoy.
Enjoy Incubus!.......2005-02-25
'A Crow Left of the Murder' may have only taken five weeks to complete in the studio, but it sounds so good, you wont even notice it. I was actually kind of suprised by this album. I didnt expect it to be this good. You may have read some negative reviews saying stuff like 'Its dissapointing' or 'Its no 'Make Yourself'. Its NOT dissapointing. Its also not just another Make Yourself, no, its its own record. The first two times I listened to it I didnt think it was very amazing. But around the third time, I thought it was really good. Plus, you can even plant a tree in the Incubus garden. Incubus is growing enough trees to replace all the trees they used by creating this album. It tells you how to plant a tree and the info in the booklet. This is also one of the rare cds where the free DVD included is actually good. I like all the features on the DVD. I would reccomend that Incubus fans buy this cd. Enjoy Incubus!
Well anyway, thats my same review from last February, (yep, in 2004). Why did I simply just copy paste it? Because this cd is the same damn thing as that version! Even the other side of the dual disc the same. I wouldent reccomend buying it twice, even if you are a hardcore fan of the band. For those who havent purchased it yet, though, then be my guest. Great album.
