The final album by the Clash's original Strummer/Jones incarnation is also their most inconsistent. There were musical and ideological rifts developing within the band, and it shows: the experimentation is almost as wild as Sandanista!'s (and the biggest experiment is heading away from their punk shiftiness and into a commercial rock sound), but they seem to be enjoying it less. The band's stabs at funk and poetry aren't terribly successful, but it all came together for two massive hits: "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" has the biggest, stupidest, most perfect riff this side of "Louie Louie," and "Rock the Casbah" pulls the band's politics, fine-honed sarcasm, and saw-toothed guitar sound into the service of a dance-floor beat. --Douglas Wolk --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

4 out of 5 stars Not their best but still pretty good.......2007-04-12

I first listened to this album in 1989 and I'm pleased they reissued it. Naturally, I can't tell the difference between the remastered edition and the original because I haven't heard the latter since 1992.
Elsehow, I think "Red Angel Dragnet" and "Car Jamming" are both good enough to be on every Clash best-of album. So where they hell are they?
Check this album out.

3 out of 5 stars A little bit unfocused.......2007-03-25

So, there are three Clash albums that I own, and of the three, I find that "Combat Rock" is the weakest of those. However, The Clash and London Calling are incredible albums. The former is a straight-up punk assault done brilliantly, and the latter is their experimentation pretty much all gone right. The band's fifth album was where the band members started being more conflicted, and this may not be too surprising when listening to this album.

There are of course some definite highlights. Everyone knows the classics "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" and the even better "Rock the Casbah." These tracks are some of the most catchy on the album and have riffs that will be stuck in your head for awhile. There are a couple of other songs worthy of listening to on the record. "Know Your Rights" couldn't have possibly have been a better opener. With the opening lyrics of "This is a public service announcement/with guitars," it sounds like a beginning track of an album, and is a moving listen. The track has the band's political views and with some sarcasm and wit. Then there's the awesome funk of "Overpowered by Funk." I think if someone enjoyed Mick Jones' future project, Big Audio Dynamite, this album might actually be a pretty good introduction.

The rest? It's a bit interesting, but not anything special. There is spoken poetry and attempts at being over the map musically once again, only this time they don't sound as into the experiments as they once were. That kind of makes it disappointing. That being said, "Combat Rock" isn't too bad of an album, and the weaker portion is actually kind of forgettable by comparison to the stronger.

The album is not bad, and it's quite cheap actually, so it wouldn't be bad to try looking out for this one, even if I don't recommend it as your first step into the Clash's backcatalogue. It may be easier to listen to in snippets than in full, actually.

4 out of 5 stars A good album if you're not a Clash fan.......2007-02-01

Why was this the Clash's best selling album? Because it appealed to more than just the true-believers. If you read through the reviews of this album, many of the faithful are saying this is the Clash's worst album, not as good as London Calling, etc. I never liked the Clash much (other than a song here and there), but I did enjoy this album. I think it is more approachable for people who are into more mainstream music (i.e. not punk rockers). I owned London Calling and the Black Market Clash EP (a 10" record, called a NuDisc), and just never warmed to the music. But this album, although it did take a few listens to appreciate, really grew on me. Favorite song from the album? Ghetto Defendant...

4 out of 5 stars Really 4 1/2.......2007-02-01

Such a good album. Many people will say this was the CD that lead to the downfall of The Clash, but I think not. Good lyrics, good music, and an edge not found in their previous work I feel. Know Your Rights is the best opening track ever. I love the variety of music, from the dance beats to the urgent messages to the rock-backed-with-Spanish-vocals. Be open minded. Buy it.

I personnaly did not buy this set, but rather the three discs separately. This is incredible music for such a low price! My jaw droped the first time I saw London Calling on sale for $8, it's a classic CD that everyone should own. This set shows the progression of the band as they go from punk foreruners to reggae explorers. The drastic changes in The Clash's style may not be for everyone, but the amount of classic tracks from "Police and Theives" to "London Calling" to "Should I stay or Should I go" make this great set worth it.

5 out of 5 stars AN OI ! BLAST !!!!.......2004-03-07

I got the picture disc vinyl album edition because it's a work
of art.At the time I bought it,the cd version featured ¨Charge
Of The 7th Cavalry¨,the live version, exact same tracks xcept
live,as bonus tracks on this record.I got wind the live one had been reissued as a separate cd.Both have.At a much
higher price I paid for the pic disc !!!! Not fair !!! Well,I ain't
getting the live one now,but strongly advise any OI ! or skin
fans to get ¨Orders Of The Day¨.It's strong and nice sounding.A true piece of punk history.
pity about those bonus tracks,though.

5 out of 5 stars All the classics together........2001-10-11

Here is a nice collection of Combat 84 songs from their first release all on one CD, sure there are only 14 songs, but they still pack in a mean punch. Old Oi! anthems from a age long ago, and they are still pulsing strong... a definate must have for fans of old Punk and Oi!....

5 out of 5 stars It's worth it!.......2001-03-05

14 songs, but I love them all.

4 out of 5 stars ALL THE OLD FAVOURITES.......2000-10-09

Combat 84 had a very short but interesting and colorful career, getting their name from their combat gear and the George Orwell novel 1984. This CD represents the best of the original material recorded over 18 years ago and will bring back some great memories for those that were there and also appeal to the new generation of Oi and Punk fans and is a good introduction to the band who have now reformed and are releasing new material. The CD features all the tracks from the bands first two EPs, ''Orders of the Day'' and ''Rapist'' that were originally on vinyl as well as the best tracks from the studio side of their album Send in the Marines. Combat 84 pull no punches when it comes to lyrics and in your face streetpunk music, if you are looking for political correctness then go somewhere else, the band cover many topics and offer their answers to dishing out punishment to Rapists and other law breakers but even though their politics lean very firmly to the right there is never any racism in the songs, the general feel is probably no more right wing than a Rebuplican party bash on election night! If you are a fan of this type of music and have never heard Combat 84 then this is a must, unlike some of the other bands from this period, Combat were not scared to air their opinions, even if it meant being banned by some sections of the music press and media. The songs are a picture of what life was like in London for youngsters in the 80's and excluding a couple of occasions this is not really a political band, infact they are more like a musical version of apocalypse now with their gung ho attitude and lyrics. If you like your music hard, tough, in your face and realistic look no further than here. The material on orders of the day compares well to the new y2k offering from the band, the ''Tooled Up'' EP released in October, this is the same old Combat but even more so, a great comeback after 18 years away, and they still sound as good and fresh now as they did then.

4 out of 5 stars An underrated and lesser known Thrash gem........2007-07-18

I'm surprised that there is only one other review for this monster of a thrash/speed album. This album came out while the thrash movement was winding down in the late eighties yet it still quite easily holds it's own against some of the other big names of that time. What you get here is great thrash/speed metal with mindblowingly intense melodically tinged guitarwork and solos strongly supporting powerful clean vocals. People seem to stay away from thrash being that they prefer more melody to their metal, as opposed to the raw and relentless nature of thrash metal. This album however, manages to just perfectly incorporate melody without overdoing it or rather underdoing it. A must have for any old school thrash fan.

5 out of 5 stars breaking the silence-the best from the bay area.......2007-04-10

this is a great album from one of the most underrated groups from the bay area.even though they were a little more progressive than thrashy, the guitar team of pearcy and altus is pretty incredible.alot of collectors would like this one too because it includes their original demo.it's amazing that they didn't get father than they did.

This is a good album, but it sounds a little different than their charged stuff. It's sounds like they were recording it in a live audience because it has a little echoes when Colin sings or when the drums are playing. it's not like it's a bad album, but it's just a little different and not as good as their Chraged stuff.

5 out of 5 stars GBH at their tightest.......2004-04-20

I also cant understand why this album never caught on...now or when it was released. Its not like GBH was doing anything other punks werent doing (As other reviewer says, Discharge...but Broken Bones and even Exploited went full metal, with less noteworthy results). This album is an important and interesting lp. This is easily GBH's best single album, and the extra tracks are a real bonus (I had totally forgotten about the ep that followed MMandBeyond). Also has their best sound, production-wise: sinewy, rather than spindly. Could it be that many listeners couldnt get past the song "Limpwristed"? Maybe for the reason that it is an anti-homophobia song? Hmm...

4 out of 5 stars Underrated, no idea why.......2003-05-30

This album was pretty soundly ignored or downright hated by most of the punks I knew at the time. I never knew why. As far as I'm concerned it was the last worthwhile record GBH put out. I seem to recall people accusing it of being "too metal." Again, I don't know why; this album is packed to the gills with great catchy punk rock. It may have been a knee jerk reaction because of what had been happening at the time with other British punk bands who WERE going metal at the time... like Discharge, English Dogs, Sacrilege, etc.
