Unless

Editorial Reviews
From the Artist
This album is recorded to sound as Live as possible. Many of the tracks that appear on the album are first takes, and the music has been "processed" as little as possible. Our world is too processed as it is, this is music--simple and unadorned. Enjoy it!

Album Description
Unless was recorded in Hermosa Beach, CA and features the talents of Todd Phillips on drums/percussion and Drew Garcia on bass. The album contains 14 main tracks--with an astonishing 20 bonus MP3's contained on the enhanced portion of the disc. The music is often a blend of several genres of music but all have a definite folk base. Funky-percussive guitar is tempered with finger-picked melodies to create beautiful, original music. From the melancholy catchiness of "Blind" to the funk of "Space" and on to the slow beauty of "Beautiful World" it is an album worth owning.

Unless, Music, Russ Glenn, Organic and rootsy. Acoustic Folk-Rock.

5 out of 5 stars Original twist on an old favorite.......2005-01-15

Picked it up just before seeing them open for the Vandals in San Francisco back in Sept. The sound clearly draws on influences from The Clash, and the Sex Pistols with unorthodox rockabilly guitar riffs on several tracks. Catchy melodies, high energy, and good lyrics. Hope they stick around for future releases....

5 out of 5 stars True Punk!.......2004-07-04

I bought this CD after I Heard "Disconnected Youth" on channel 914 Music Choice Alternative Rock. And let me tell you, these guys are gonna be big. This CD is what I would call true punk. Buy it, and you will be listening to it for a long time.

BEST SONG: POWER ANIMAL

5 out of 5 stars Best thing to hit punk in a while.......2004-06-23

I picked this up after hearing that Kung Fu Records had signed on to distribute Stiff Little Fingers' latest, Guitar & Drum, and I wanted to hear another band the label carried. That and I liked the cover. I did not expect to find a disc I would listen to almost every day since. This band is pure energy from start to finish. Next Stop Armageddon captures the raw power of early bands like The Vibrators, The Damned and the Sex Pistols and combines it with a more modern hardcore sound. Musically, the band is very tight and their sound is excellent. Lyrically, you get a band that has something to say and knows how they want to say it. The whole disc is phenomenal but, in my opinion, the stand-outs are "Disconnected Youth", "Power Animal", "Sister", "American Nightmare" and my new favorite sing-along "N.R.A.". If you're looking for a punk album that gets it right, give this one a try, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars One stop on the road to immortality.......2006-11-19

This is a more than competent CD transfer of acoustic recordings of Sir Nigel Playfair's legendary 1920s revivals of The Beggar's Opera and its sequel Polly. Quite sufficiemt to show why the Beggar;s Opera production, meant to fill a few weeks' gap at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, ran for three years. And while Gay's sequel was like most sequels, not up to the original, this recording is the only source for the second-best ballad opera.

1 out of 5 stars Must Stop Ordering When Drinking - Or Maybe I Got Foxed.......2006-09-02

Right. Can't remember what state of sobriety I was in when I ordered this cd and I may have missed some key clues about its nature. But I was so excited to find anything claiming to relate to Gay's "Polly" (which otherwise seems to have completely disappeared after it was censored in the 18th century - even internet wise) that I bought this cd. Turns out it is a cd version of some music originally recorded in the early 1920's. It is moderately interesting even for someone who is not primarily interested in antigue recordings (aka "scratchy records") because the style may be closer to that of the original performance. (There is no reason to think that common tastes were better in the 18th century than in 1920.) It is certainly different than contemporaneous performances of BO.

Don't mean to be sexist - which I am - but the duets, choreses and male performances seem to be less antigue than the soprano pieces. The broads are simply squeaky. Something to do with frequency loss in early recordings, I expect. On the other hand, the bass songs are equally abrasive and archaic.

Even the notes about "Polly" in this cd are disappointing. No mention of the history of "Polly", no mention of the source for the music. Try googling for a link for Gay and Polly. If you find one, be sure to post - I would love to know.

Unless you are an academic involved with some of the most obscure corners of the history of recorded music, I would forget this one. Instead, root for someone to find and record Gay's Polly. And buy a more modern interpretation of the Beggar's Opera. I have certainly heard antique recordings restored more vibrantly than this cd - but I would think that depends to a large extent on the quality of what you have to start with.

The only reason I gave it 2 stars (for some reason, Amazon refuses to record my change from 1 to 2 stars; but that is computers for you) instead of 1 was because of I love the melodies of the songs so much. But I will also admit that it is possible that Gay have been lucky that Polly was suppressed - the melodies and lyrics are not nearly as good as BO. On the other hand, this cd is so antique that is an unfair basis for judgment, But what the H!

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not nearly ground breaking. .......2006-12-01

Interesting CD. The duo comprises of former Shamen bandmate and DJ Richard West (Mr. C) and Jeremy Jones (not the famous snowboarder). They got together to do this project apparently to create music that frees the mind from the shackles of terrestrial living... or something like that. At least that's according to the insert booklet, which details the duo's chance meeting and the evolution of the creation of this CD. Essentially what you get is something between ambient electronic music and the EDM style electro, which is highly synthetic sounding rhythms and sounds designed to put you in a trance-like state.

In other words nothing entirely new. Brian Eno has been sucessfully experimenting with ambient music for decades. "Revolutionary" soundscapes were announced with groups like Babble years before Animus Amoure. There is absolutely nothing trend setting or revolutionary to this album. I guess what I'm saying is don't believe all the hype the CD insert pronounces and just regard the album just as it is... music.

So does it put you in a trance like state of higher consciousness when listening? In a word... no (unless you use some form of 'help' to get you there, which would be cheating). However that dosen't discount the CD as a failure. Far from it. What you do have is some really nice environmental tracks you can easily lay back and relax with. There are hits and misses in my opinion, but overall it's good music.

You might notice there only being seven tracks on this CD. Don't worry about getting only half the music because the shortest song clocks in at over eight minutes, with the average around 10-11. Some of the songs kinda go long in my opinion, and that includes understanding the concept of ambient music. Interestingly enough some about half of the songs are separated in two, even three parts. So much that if you are inclined you can split the tracks into separate songs with mininal loss to the pacing or feel of the music. Thus giving you a CD with around 12 tracks instead of seven.

In spite of the subtle indignance I pick up on in the liner notes I actually really like the booklet insert. You get pages of information regarding their philosophy and theories behind not only the music project, but life views as well. While I might not agree with everything said (the science of spirituality and such) I do appreciate being welcomed into their psyche. The booklet also contains in depth detail on the creation of each song and the method behind the meaning. You will know EXACTLY what the song titles mean and where they were going with the song.

There are some pretty good tracks here. Dum Spiro Spero I think is my favorite. It has a nice steady rhythm and a good hook behind it as well nice atmospheric effects with the synthesizers. Ghost is another good track. Life is one of those tracks than be split into two good ones, the first laid back and the second more aggressive. 1+1=7 kind of goes on with no rudder to steer it anywhere meangful in my opinion. I wasn't a fan or And on either, though I can't remember exactly why (maybe it goes on and on along the same vein as 1+1=7).

So the big question is would I recommend it? Considering the prices I am seeing for it... yes. I wouldn't endorse this album at full CD prices, but as a discount find it's a gem. If you like rhythmic (electro) ambient music then you got your fix right here. Mood music lovers will find solace on this album as well. The rest of you it will depend on what you look for in electronic music. I'm glad I have this album.

5 out of 5 stars Be Real, Be Free, Be Love........1999-12-03

Richard West and Jeremy Jones were definately on to something when they made this piece. it's an "emotional piece of electronica" as they described in the cd booklet. this album takes you to new levels of emotional awareness. I found it very soothing and relaxing, great after a long hard day. this shamanic piece is not to be missed! "Be Real, Be Free, Be Love."
