Scarecrowes

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
There's an old saying, "everything old is new again ". That pretty much sums up the first release by Dallas/FtWorth's Daddy's Soul Donut, Scarecrowes, which delivers track by track, a style that is both earthy and eclectic. This is a band whose sound grabs a listener with distinctively different yet familiar songs, and then takes them through many avenues and stylistic twists while still maintaining a common thread of the group's musical identity. There's something new from D/FW, and it's name is Daddy's Soul Donut.

Four musicians with varied backgrounds forming a band may not be unusual, but crafting a palatable sound from a myriad of resources such as grunge, fusion, reggae, celtic, a little punk, and even some country, is certainly out of the ordinary and often nothing short of a miracle. The foursome's history reads like the most twisted of family trees.

While attending college in 1991, singer Neil Schnell met Jim Kisselburg the lead guitarist for the donut, they soon started their first band and after playing the cover band circuit for a time, began writing music together in the winter of 1993. During that time they enlisted drummer Brandon Bumpas, whose background in jazz and leanings toward more eccentric music added unexpected balance not only to Jim's classical guitar and blues tendencies, but also to Neil's influence from singer-songwriters, such as Paul Simon and Elvis Costello. With an interesting mix in the works and three years of breakups and regroupings behind them, the final changes to the band came in January of 1996. Neil, playing bass up to this time, gladly handed the low frequencies to bassist Jerry Pommer who was introduced through a mutual friend. His unique blend of styles and diversified background provided the perfect complement to the DSD sound.

"Daddy's Soul Donut is more bash than flash, driving towards individualism rather than commercialism". Ironically possessed with a dose of pop sensibility that serves to set this band apart from the rest. But mostly this is a talented and dedicated group of four musicians "crafting and expanding a musical language among themselves". "Their music breathes". Take a listen, and lend an ear, Scarecrowes is just the beginning. If you missed seeing this band live in the clubs of north texas, it is a shame. Almost as good recorded as live, their songs are great. Here is hoping Neil will be back soon.
I heard he now plays in a band called Velvet Love Box that plays after some stars games and in the mid-cities
