4 out of 5 stars Outstanding Debut!.......2000-08-09

Most bands have no clue what they're doing when they release their first albums, and often it's painfully obvious right from the start. I mean, 99.9% of all 'industrial' debut albums that I've heard in my years as a fan of the genre have me firmly convinced that 'debut' means 'horrible attempt at making your synthesizer sneeze' in French or something.

But Proclaimed Visions is different. Holocaust Theory not only gives the impression that it knows what it is doing, but also that it has known its direction for quite some time. This album sounds professional and sophisticated, nothing like your typical debut album, and several light years removed from your young neighbor's garage band next door.

Rather, Proclaimed Visions is a foray into masterful darkwave. It offers dark strings, rumbling ambience, thundering percussion, and an unexpected feeling of... calm. For all of its distorted, whispery vocals (courtesy of James Vietzke) and angry, sometimes political lyrics and samples, the album feels subdued.

It's like staring a serial killer in the eye, where the album successfully hides its true emotions beneath a veneer of sludginess, of slowness and heaviness, before erupting in rare violent moments. It's like swimming in hot lava with the volcano still sputtering sporadically - the heat is there, but it gets even hotter.

Proclaimed Visions doesn't have the relatively light, ethereal feeling of other darkwave bands, such as the groups on the Projekt label. This is a new breed of darkwave, mixed with a cold anger that creates a unique stepchild, beautiful and ugly at the same time. A captivating debut, and moreso, an excellent album.
