Editorial Reviews When true art emerges, it is of the soul, something the corporate wonks will never understand. Eric Hutts and Dave Urbanski, they of Ragman, have produced just that with Niagara Falsetto. Hearing the rough tracks of an album can be like tasting the cake before it's baked, but even after noshing on these raw morsels, I crave more--to sit in the swamp gator bath of "Ruby Green River," to have a nice day with the 1971 exuberance of "Warm Crawl," to ride the trip-piano psychedelicarousel of "Hold Me Up, Rob Me Blind." This music takes you places. I hope this album befuddles all the accountants and sells herds. It deserves to. But be forewarned: If this collection of ear food for thought cannot stoke your imagination and set the cosmic wheels about you turning, get your ears checked. Now. For surely the connection between them and your heart is on the blink. A very well made album. There are obvious similarities to such modern rock bands as ALICE IN CHAINS, SEVEN MERRY THREE, SOUNDGAREN and DAYS OF THE NEW, but at times one can also sense such influences as BLACK SABBATH (VOL.4 era) and THE BEATLES. Everything is still very heavy and the grunge element still exists, but acoustic guitars hold everything together on the periphery...overall the album is well produced with careful attention paid to detail. Songwriting runs the gamut from intensely personal tunes to songs with very up front christian themes...a very good release, and especially so considering it was made on an indie budget. In creative fields from journalism to music, the corporate stock-grubbers and marketing mavens have seized the turf. Works like "synergy"' and "profit" are bounced around like holy magic superballs. Bean counters with Schwarzenegger left-brains and not a speck of artistic imagination call the shots. Even independent labels feel compelled to play the monkey and ape every move the big gorillas make. Before any band signs, they all want to know: Do you have a following? How many units have you sold? What's the lead singer look like? It's a rough world out there. If Vincent Van Gogh couldn't sell a painting in HIS lifetime, would he even think to pick up a paintbrush if he was born today? Or would he be flipping McBurgers while his mom pestered him to get the MBA, the trophy wife, and the 5-year fixed mortgage?

Before I even mention the music just let me say a word about the packaging of this disc. This is the CD equivalent of those tri-gatefold albums of the 60's and 70's. 22 pages, awesome artwork on nearly every page, picture disc.... Very classy. And the music is pretty good too... I remember loving a Ragman demo that I reviewed way back in 1993 in Sanctified Press #9. Grunge was still the thing, and I expected RAGMAN to sign a major label deal and release the first authentic grunge album into the... read more
