MACHINA/The Machines of God

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
With the doubters hovering round his band following the rock-is-dead pronouncement that preceded the flawed electronic dabblings of Adore, Machina finds Billy Corgan desperate to prove everyone, not least himself, wrong. On their fifth album, the Pumpkins attempt to reclaim the higher ground they dominated with the peerless Siamese Dream and the sprawling 28-track opus Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. As a result, they hit the ground running on Machina, exploding into life with "The Everlasting Gaze" and its firestorm of guitars and heavy metaphysical thunder. There are some quintessential Pumpkins moments here, notably "Stand Inside Your Love," which soars away on a spiraling guitar solo, and "Try, Try, Try," which taps into Corgan's ever-present melancholy. At 73 minutes long, Machina overstays its welcome, beginning to flag, ironically, at the self-aggrandizing "Heavy Metal Machine." No matter--the Pumpkins have made their point with brutal grace. --Mike Pattenden --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars "For every chemical, you trade a piece of your soul - with no return.".......2007-06-13

Contrary to popular belief, The Smashing Pumpkins have never (as of June 13th 2007 ;P) released a poor album. Even their three outtakes albums, Pisces Iscariot (1994), The Aeroplane Flies High (1996) and MACHINA II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music (2000) stand up favourably against most of their contemporaries' strongest work.

MACHINA however, is deemed by many to be their worst. Not so. The album's opening six tracks surpass even Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness' (1995) as both a demonstration of their versatility and a signal of intent.

From the incendiary opener 'The Everlasting Gaze' mad-genius singer/guitarist/songwriter Billy Corgan and incomparable skinsman Jimmy Chamberlin bulldoze their way through eight of MACHINA's fifteen tracks, dissecting affecting ballads ('Raindrops & Sunshowers' and the breathtaking 'Stand Inside Your Love'), existential threnodies ('Glass & the Ghost Children' and 'The Crying Tree of Mercury') and plaintive odes ('Try, Try, Try' and 'With Every Light').

MACHINA is also deeply conceptual, even when compared to previous albums, with the album's extraordinary artwork and prose conjuring a phantasmic, seemingly post-apocalyptic alternate reality that puts Nine Inch Nails' dystopian Year Zero (2007) concept to shame. The cryptic story of 'Glass and the Machines of God' is more difficult to engage with than Mellon Collie...'s upon cursory inspection, but further investigation into MACHINA's numerous ancilliary forms is rewarding for those keen to determine a fraction of Corgan's apparent psychosis.

The problem many fans have with MACHINA however, lies in its 'wall of sound' production, as opposed to the Pumpkins' infamous, painstaking multitracking of guitar parts. Nevertheless, as with Mellon Collie..., it was proved that the heavier the involvement of second guitarist James Iha in the recording process, the stronger the album sounds. Additionally, Iha also played many of MACHINA's bass parts, following the resignation toward the end of the sessions of original bassist D'arcy Wretzky after a series of confrontations with Corgan.

Whilst considered the Pumpkins' final studio album for close to five years, Corgan and Chamberlin have been hard at work for the past 18 months readying the band's sixth album, Zeitgeist, due for release on July 9th. Neither D'arcy, Iha (who Corgan publicly blamed for the band's original dissolution) nor Melissa auf der Maur (who took over bass duties for MACHINA's subsequent live dates) are involved in the new project, with newcomers Jeff Schroeder and Ginger Reyes taking on guitar and bass respectively for the Pumpkins' new live incarnation.

"I blow the dust off my guitar, in the attic with the stars..I read your letters, to feel better, the tears upon my faded ink."

You can sense all the emotion in Billy Corgans lyrics here, from "I of the Mourning", as in many other of the songs. This album is surely underrated in the commercial view. There are a lot of great songs here. The first single, "The Everlasting Gaze", brings out the hard riffs that pumpkins fans of past albums love. Then into a softer mellow mood with "Raindrops and Sunshowers". These songs are all great when the sound is turned up loud. Sing to it, you will enjoy it.
"Stand Inside Your Love", the 2nd single, and probably best recieved, is an awsome love song. The words are beautiful and well written.
Well my favorite tracks, and probably most hardcore pumpkins fans favorites include:
"I of the Mourning", "This Time", "Age of Innocence" a wonderful closer to the album. I even enjoy the 10 minute haunting "Glass and the Ghost Children".
All in all people tend to think this album was over produced, but I love it to death. One of my favorite albums all time. I cant tell you how many times I've listened to this one. Most bands evolve when it comes to the style of their music. The Smashing Pumpkins Sure have. You can definetely see the maturity in this album, as well as the poorly recieved yet excellent, "Adore" album.
And the rumors have now become reality of a new album by the pumpkins. Most likely early 2007 for this album. I'm waiting with anticipation.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-08-08

After their last full-length album, Adore, which featured techno-like songs and no drummer, people really didn't know what to expect from the Pumpkins. Well, they tried reverting back to their Mellon Collie days, but, overall, the record comes off as tired, and just doesn't yield many good songs.

Highlights:
"Stand Inside Your Love"- Almost justifies the buying of the album. The true highlight of the album, it is a very beautiful song, and features some true lyrical mastery from Corgan. The ending is very memorable, and is one of the Pumpkins' finest moments.

"The Everlasting Gaze"- The similarities to "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" is striking, but doesn't take away from the song. While the Pumpkins may sound like they're trying too hard to convince people they could still rock with the best of 'em, the song is nevertheless a highlight and features some great lyrics by Corgan (Although I think he over-sings this one; his voice makes the song unique).

Those two songs are staples on my iPod, but nothing else on the album really strikes you. "Heavy Metal Machine" is a flop, and I think that Corgan is trying too hard to be a poet, forcing some of these "love thoughts" upon listeners.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most artistic albums of recent memory.......2001-02-13

This is my introduction to the Pumpkins, so I may be biased towards this is as great album verses the rest of the Pumpkins' library, but I really enjoy this album. Billy Corgan is one of the most established rockers of the 90's and new millennium and I can easily see why. This is modern rock influenced by the likes of The Cure, Joy Division, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, and other greats. Another reviewer gave it the term "goth pop" and I think that's a somewhat true, but unfair label to give it. It does have pop and a lot of goth elements to it however. Some psychedelic elements, some classical elements, some new wave elements; The Pumpkins put out a pretty damn good album. From the opening guitar riff of The Everlasting Gaze, from the closing sonic distortion of Blue Skies Bring Tears, Billy Corgan and his band of not-so-merry men provide an enjoyable album with a centered theme. My only concern is that a lot of the songs have a very unified sound, and it took me awhile before I could tell them all apart. Songs like Glass And The Ghost Children, The Everlasting Gaze, Heavy Metal Machine, and Blue Skies Bring Tears are very unique, but other songs like Stand Inside Your Love, Try Try Try, and Speed Kills sound non-descript and similar, not bad however. This is a very smart purchase, but maybe I'd save $10 and get the US domestic, the bonus track and Japanese booklet don't make this any better.

5 out of 5 stars The Epic of Love.......2001-02-09

Most albums today can be reviewed by the catchiness of their songs, the technical abilities of their makers, or the stylistic preferences of their reviewers. Not this one. /////// From the dusty pages of ages past and lovers forgotten, this album weaves the epic tale of your life. Beneath the layered universes of music of each song beats a steady pulse of life and love. The opening song, The Everlasting Gaze, ferociously grinds its way into your skull in the ignorant strength of (insecure) rebellion. Number two, Raindrops + Sunshowers, is the lonely cry of one soul in search of another among life's ferocious downpour. By the third track, the hit radio single Stand Inside Your Love, this album has taken you to the peaks of ecstasy and hope. By the thirteenth, you are in the throes of despair, in the knowledge that all things good and true one day die. Only by the last epic track, portraying the search for eternal love among the violent end of the world, have you begun to grasp just what this album holds. This is not an album to pop into your CD player and skip to your favorite catchy tunes, it is a deep beautiful mystery to gaze into until you lose yourself. /////// The music itself promotes this, being very complex, layered with worlds of sounds and melodies. Some do not like this and prefer the simple acoustic singer/songwriter albums. While there is a point to this criticism, there is just simply so much more in this album than any of those other types would have, so much more to invite you back time and time again, so much more to explore and search. /////// If one word could sum up this album it would be "epic". Never before have I seen so much hidden in one album. Love, loss, joy, hope, ecstasy, desolation, resignation, love. This album should not be reviewed by modern music industry critics, but rather by critics of classic literature and art.

3 out of 5 stars The End........2000-06-13

The Billy Corgan Experience was possibly the greatest rock band of the 90's. But Machina just does not cut it. This album is Adore with Jimmy Chamberlin. It is a goth pop album, indulging again the IMPORTANT BILLY, the MELLOW BILLY, the I AM ONLY GONNA ROCK WHEN I"M FEELING IRONICAL BILLY, as opposed to the psychedelic guitar solo gish Billy. Which is fine. Nobody should be pigeonholed and forced to cater to the fans. But this should be an album by Billy Corgan, not The Smashing Pumpkins. If that was the name on the CD as opposed to the Punpkins moniker, I would have rated this album higher, but when compared to Gish or MCIS, it doesn't quite make the grade.
