Despite its somewhat polite, trip-hoppy surface, Dido Armstrong's music frequently rests on a melancholy that can only be called courageous in the current pop world. Few singer-songwriters with 12 million record sales behind them would offer a single such as Life for Rent's "White Flag," which is in part an apology for the "mess and destruction" the narrator has left with her lover. Emotions are even stickier on other tracks, with Dido's Dusty-ish voice coolly sweeping through "Don't Leave Home," one of the creepiest codependent-love songs since "Every Breath You Take," and in "Who Makes You Feel," ticking off a list of reasons why an affair is dying, while also admitting that she still loves the guy. It's a hard-won romanticism, too, that pokes its head up in the tough-minded "This Land is Mine" and "Do You Have a Little Time" ("I'd like to hold you still/Remind you of all you've missed"). A knotty and rewarding album. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
A great second album that does not let you down!.......2007-07-12
This is a great album!
"White Flag", "Life For Rent", "This Land is Mine", "See the Sum" are songs you could listen to over and over. Her voice is as great as always and so are the lyrics!
I hope she'll keep coming up with new songs like these.
a must have it!.......2007-06-20
excellent, the best one from this girl
Make up your heart to break it again.......2007-05-06
Dido's voice has this ethereal feminity to it which invites hope, gladness and serendipity. Almost every song on Life for Rent makes you wonder why you haven't heard it in a while. This came out sometime in 2003 and it still is worth it's weight in gold. I'm not a big pop fan and I don't like Justin Timberlake's music. I'm more of a grunge fan from the mid 90's and a bit psych trance gets my mood going. I'm a big Cranberries fan and I adore voices with range. Dido's voice, however, doesn't quite display range yet manages to comfort one's solitude or multitude. When White Flag came out, the world rocked to it and various remixes were made. She was 32 when this record came out and today she is 35.
The disc has 11 songs. There are no songs that are forgettable. Whether you're in a car or in a house made of wood or alone on your bed at night wondering if you should pick up the telephone, her voice will guide your mind. Now before I try display more faulty comprehension, I should conclude by mentioning my three absolute favourite tracks on the disc. See You When You're 40, Mary's in India and Stoned. The title track is maybe the most forgettable one on this disc but there will be days when listeners might have warmed their ears to it.
Avoid playing this on earphones. It's meant to be played to your room's walls. Just a thought. Very well, see you when you're 40.
Very happy with our purchase!.......2007-04-11
Great cd, came fast and in perfect condition. Thank you!!
My life soundtrack.......2007-03-03
I have been a big fan of Dido's music since the first time I heard her lush vocals on Faithless' first album. Her first cd "No Angel" was good, a bit predictable and often bland but still quite good. Dido definitely has a distinct voice that sets her apart from most of her counterparts nowadays. She may have a limited range but she knows it and doesn't try to hit the high notes like a lot of singers do.
"Life For Rent" is Dido's second album. I definitely felt the material was much stronger than the songs on her first album both lyrically and musically. Her songs take on a more lush, intimate sound courtesy of the occasional acoustic guitar. I feel like I am in a studio watching Dido perform when I listen to "Life for Rent". The title track is my favorite song because I often relate to her lyrics. Initially I wasn't too wild about the first single "White Flag" but after hearing it several times on the radio when it first came out, the song eventually grew on me. The songs on the album tends to sound eerily similiar which is a minor flaw but I didn't mind it. I am just glad that there was no "Thank You" pt 2 on the cd. Overall this is a nice cd to listen to in the morning with a steaming hot cup of coffee and a scone or two, nice mellow music to chill out to.

Customer Reviews:
good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27
We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.
memories.......2007-02-22
This cd is excellent it has a lot of very good music and true to the original sound, Am getting a lot of enjoyment, highly recomended
TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13
This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.
TV themes.......2006-07-05
Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.
Deja Vu.......2006-02-17
Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:
You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02
Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.
Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10
Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

Customer Reviews:
One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09
Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.

Customer Reviews:
Great effort from a great guitarist.......2007-02-16
I have been a fan of Nuno's for many many years, even having met him once. He is truly a gifted and great person. I was sad when Extreme split, but it did allow Nuno to find himself. His work with Mourning Widows, Population 1 and Dramagods saw Nuno searching for a place to call his own. This CD is part of that exploration. His skill as a guitarist is unequaled, and I always admired his voice. I thought his voice was underused during his time with Extreme. Nuno has the fantastic ability to write very catchy tunes, with sweet harmonies layed on top. Nuno is one of those musicians that stand out. It's impossible to deny his talent. He was born to be a star if you will. In that way, it seems the demise of Extreme was inevitable; it's impossible to keep someone like Nuno in the confines of a group such as Extreme, no matter how good or bad you think they were. A course was plotted during his time in that band, and Nuno has engaged.
The best effort from Nuno's post "EXTREME" career........2005-11-01

Mourning Widows: Furnished Souls For Rent
Thank you very much for reading my post.
Wow where do I begin to tell you how good this album is? For starters it is my personal
opinion Nuno's best effort in his post "Extreme" career. Have not heard a good hard rock
album this good in a very long time. From Start to finish this one rocks all the way through.
Can not believe that when this came out that it did not become a great commercial success
especially when you take into consideration how horrible mainstream hard rock is these days.
Once again Nuno Bettencourt proves that he is not just one of the greatest guitarist of all
time, but that he is a real musican. A lot of great guitarist write great guitar riffs, but
not great lyrics on their solo and side project bands. Unlike other rocker guitarist Nuno
writes and composes songs from a musical stand point and not just a guitar head view. As far
as I am concerned "Furnished Souls For Rent" justifies that Nuno is arguably one of the most
complete guitarist in the world for he is a great singer, great song writer, great producer,
great musican, and a guitar God.
The songs found on here are just amazing. You have to have a hook in good hard rock music and
every song on here has a hook. Plus great, as always, lyrics that can be tongue at cheek at
times and serious at other times. When I first bought this cd about two years ago I could not
get enough of it and kept replaying it over and over. And it seemed that almost every time that
it was played something new was heard on each tune. This has to be one of the most underrated
Hard Rock albums of all-time. Plus the overall sound was very old school yet modern. You see in
most of todays records the music production has gotten too professional and too much computer
mumbo jumbo crap. It seems like everyone tries to make their music sound too perfect and take
out too many stuff and end result the music sounds too clean or too superficial. Nuno thankfully
has not fallen into this bad modern habit and especially on this album. Here is a hint to all
modern rockers "your music is not supposed to sound perfect" I mean listen to any classic bands
from 70's for proof.
The entire album is great with awesome hard rocking rhythms, great non commercial lyrics, thick
bass lines, decent drumming, great classic production, and plenty of guitars. By the way did I
tell you this album has great guitars? The lyrics make you think too.
I love every single song on here, but will only discuss four of them. My personal favorites are
the first 2 songs "Furnished Souls For Rent" which is maybe the best modern hard rock song you
never heard & "No Regrets" song number two. Both of these songs are just amazinly well written.
On the title cut "FSFR" the simple yet powerful main lyrics say it all: "She is heaven she's my
haven my escape! She goes all the way. She knows no glory tells a story with her face! Furnished
Souls For Rent." And NO this is not a power ballad either.
And on Song number two the best line is: "Don't obey the teacher tell her kids shut up! Mold you
into USELESS robots not allowed to feel. Quit your job tomorrow, quit your job today, take a
permanent vacation your dying everyday." Enough said!
The last two songs are also my favorites "War Paint" which is a classic great historically
referenced hard rocker and the opinions expressed are the truth as only Nuno could. The best
line on this song: "Put on your War paint cos here they come to claim your home & claim your
mother. Put on your war paint cos here they come to change your GOD & crush your own beliefs.
Put on your war paint cos here they come to spread the lies and leave you with disease!"
Is this not the best historical hard rock lyrics ever written? Ever?!
The last song "Angerexia" just totally rocks. It is a simplistic song but it is very powerfully
written about anger, hatred, and malice. I could really identify with this song because it just a
cool song to end a great record. This rocker shows that you can not always be happy or be good.
You have to have a balance of both Good & Evil that is just life. The lyrics say it all:
"You don't know why your angry! You don't know why your mad! It's a USELESS Revolution! Yeah!
Lazy RESOLUTION!"
I wish could desrcibe every song on this album but it would take a book to describe it all.
Like mentioned earlier there are not, in my personal opinion, any bad songs on here. This is
Nuno's best work, until proven otherwise, in his post "Extreme" career.
My advice to you if you do not already own this album is to:
GO BUY, BEG, BURROW, OR STEAL THIS ALBUM NOW!

NUNO ROCKS MY SOCKS OFF... AGAIN.......2002-07-07
I've actually had this CD for a year or so but haven't got around to adding my two cents worth... What a great follow-up CD to Mourning Widows last venture. Nuno is the master of HARD ROCK/FUNK-FUSION. Ever since he left Extreme he has really reinvented himself finding his own unique style. Mourning Widows has an authentic and melodic sound that defies classification. Nuno's songwriting seems to get better with every album (as well as his singing), case in point "Upside Downside". This is the quintessential funk n roll song. If your a Nuno fan you will NOT be disappointed. If you have no idea who Nuno is, broaden your horizons! Pick up this CD and be prepared to get your groove on!!! -I had to drop a star for the poor import quality, it really lacks that crisp clean cutting-edge recording studio sound.
Out of 7 albums, The best of Bettencourt's work so far...........2002-05-23
From the first defiant pull offs of Play with me, to the cynical out-look at fashion of Hip Today, Extreme were may favourite band, with them out of the picture and various solo careers looking tediously un original i thought there Nuno would retire or give up or both.
But thank god he didn't....
He went on to form boston based trio Mourning Widows with Donovan, his cousin or something, and Jeff Consi,
"Furnished souls for rent" became the best rock album i had heard since everything had seemed to become written in a minor key.
Put down you Nickelback and Incubus Cd's and pick this up,
The clever lyrics leave you thinking about the song days after the last time you hear it.
The well though out solo's suit the song perfectly unlike some of Extreme's earlier work.
Don't go expecting aything even remotely extreme-ish because it isn't.
Not at all, it's catchy, loud, funky, and eveyrtime you listen to it it you seem to hear something new.
This is exactly what i want from a cd.
Even if you are doubtful reach for your credit card and buy this CD NOW!!!!!!!!
You won't regret it.
Who Is This?!?!.......2001-06-14
Is what I keep getting..... Being a longtime fan of all things extreme, I purchased a copy of this work, and have been playing it in a local music store. Everytime it is played, thats what I get. Who the heck is this?!?! These guys are very hip. There arrangements are cool, and their playing is Very COOL!! Thank God this recording is finally for sale in the U.S. Buff

Album Description
"Sarajevo to Belfast" brings together two incredible musicians from countries rent by deadly internal strife. Singer Tommy Sands grew up amidst the devastating "troubles" in Northern Ireland, and cellist Vedran Smailovic was a resident of Bosnia, which suffered direly from the fragmentation of the former Yugoslavia into separate warring territories.
The violence and pain these men witnessed and experienced has been transmuted into a compelling swirl of world, classical and folk music on this CD, which contains many songs serving as pleas for peace in these and other war-torn lands. Pete Seeger's "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," with vocals by Sands, fellow Irish singer Delores Keane, and a chorus of Catholic and Protestant children, was played outside the peace negotiations between Northern Ireland and England for three years, and was also used as an anthem of peace in Northern Ireland when it was played by both sides after the 1998 "Real IRA" bombing in Omagh that killed 29 people. Serbia's 1992 shelling of a breadline in Sarajevo, resulting in 22 civilian deaths, inspired Smailovic to bring his cello to the bombsite and perform "Albinoni's Adagio" (heard here in a studio version) at 4 p.m., the time of the deadly attack, for the next 22 days. The image of the seated, formally attired "Cellist of Sarajevo," playing the mournful composition was seen worldwide, drawing the attention of the media and anti-war advocates such as Joan Baez, who later joined him in the street to demonstrate for peace.
Both Seeger and Baez appear on this CD. Pete joins Sands in singing their co-written "The Music of Healing," which has been called "a new anthem of healing for our times" by John Hume, leader of Northern Ireland's Social Democratic and Labour Party and co-recipient of the 1998 Noble Peace Prize for his reconciliation work. Joan and Sands share the vocals on the stirring "Ode to Sarajevo," which bears the chorus, "Sarajevo, Sarajevo, the whole world sings your song."
The impact of war and the yearning for peace color various other tracks. The instrumental "Bembesa" replicates the tranquility of the Serbian river after which it is named, while the classical "Waltz" is interspersed with the sounds of gunfire and military drums. Sands' "Child of 2000," written in 1995, paints a pastoral picture of a peaceful future that has yet to materialize.
Customer Reviews:
sarajevo to belfast.......2005-09-14
a little over-produced. Smailovic playing an electric cello on one track, reverb on another. All in all, still inspiring
A testament that.......2000-02-07
These songs are a testament that there is still some humanity left in this human race. It is a consolation that such beautiful and inspiring music can come from events that caused so much sadness and destruction. If only everyone who wanted to pick up a weapon picked up a musical instrument... Imagine!
Wars should not kill civilians.......2000-01-31
This beautiful, heartwarming, hopefilled album should be a welcome addition to spiritfilled people who oppose wars. In an NPR interview, we are reminded by the artists of the 1000th day of the bombing that wars kill civilians standing in bread lines....that those at the front lines should bring musical instruments with them and everyone play their own songs. Better than hearing guns killing people. Mothers throughout the world should unite to oppose all wars. We saw unity at midnight Jan 1st 2000, let this music propel us to hope for a world without wars.
