Exit Ritual
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
converter's aural universe was always desolate and sometimes threatening. "exit ritual" continues this path but this time around sturgis' uses his nightmarish sound injections in a more subtle way. so, can we still speak of 'power noise'? sure we can!

Not Bernstien and not for serious listeners.......2003-06-30
I ordered this cd (used) mainly to get the Glinka capriccio (assumedly) by Bernstein, thinking I might enjoy the orchestral versions from Carmen as well. Received the disk and was shocked to see the name Andre Kostelanetz on it...only couple tracks are by Bernstein. The pieces are mostly played at a breakneck tempo that tramples the music. The recording quality is poor. Sounds like a studio remix where the players were recorded at different times. This CD is a poor choice; even in the bargain bin; even for casual listeners. There are much better played and recorded orchestrations of these Spanish-themed works available.
Pristinely Beautiful.......2002-03-12
This is really a beautiful recording. I am not an opera expert, but during the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics I was transfixed by the Carmen music that Sasha Cohen skated her Long Program to. I simply had to hear it again as soon as possible, and saw this "Carmen Without Words" CD on Amazon. This CD does not have any "libretto", or words. It is just a Carmen 'suite' of the tunes from the opera. Opera connoisseurs will probably want to order a multi-disc set of the entire unabridged Carmen opera, but for opera hacks like myself this CD is perfect for enjoyable times in front of the computer or while reading magazines, to just enjoy Carmen's great tunes. The sound is clean, crisp, and the music is perfectly played by Andre Kostelanetz and his orchestra. It's amazing how well they play, actually, it borders on perfect. Anyway, you are sure to love this CD. It is lovely to listen to, and I don't see how anything about it could disappoint you. By the way, the CD also contains four bonus tracks from several other composers to really top it all off.
WONDERFUL CD!.......2002-01-19
THIS IS A GREAT CD FOR THOSE WHO, LIKE ME, JUST WANT TO HEAR THE MUSIC FROM OPERA WITHOUT THE SINGING. I PLAY IT OVER AND OVER ALONG WITH THE OTHER "OPERA WITHOUT WORDS" CDS.
Magnificent Carmen.......2000-08-07
I have not heard a Carmen performance which compares with this one.

Solid Offering from one of North America's Top Power Noise Acts.......2006-04-06
About the Band:
Converter is the rhythmic noise / power noise / industrial project of Scott Sturgis. The band is known for its harsh rhythms and distorted sounds and with North American industrial music fans. Like other rhythmic noise bands, the electronically produced music can sometimes sound as though it was intended for a soundtrack for a film or video game. Though danceable, Converter is considered rather abstract and borderline experimental. Converter rarely makes use of lyrics / vocals.
About the Album:
In contrast to general opinions on this genre, I find rhythmic noise and many of the tracks on Exit Ritual to be multilayered (often featuring a strong second melody, such as with Bloodsex) and compelling to dance to. In addition to listening to this album at home or making club requests (which surprisingly I've had honored), I actually find songs like Cloud Eye and Order/Creature excellent for working out (jogging). The tracks are dark, brooding, and ominous, which is not what true of all power noise albums.
Exit Ritual is certainly more martial and measured than Shock Front or Blast Furnace (the two other Converter albums I currently own), which is a mixed blessing. This means that if you like one of the tracks, you'll be more likely to find something similar in the others to please you. However, you won't find as much variation within the album, which might be important to some listeners ... especially in the case of this album which includes an hour and 15-minutes of power noise.
I would never recommend somebody new to electronic music to any power noise project, and as brilliant as I believe Sturgis to be, that includes Exit Ritual. However, this album is an easy introduction into rhythmic noise for fans of terror EBM projects like Suicide Commando or Feindflug. However, unlike the controversies that surround many industrial bands, Exit Ritual makes no political statement and has no offensive content.
Though Amazon doesn't feature samples of the album, Sturgis has released some samples of his work on various industrial music sites and I'd like recommend a few tracks ...

Convert to disappointment.......2004-12-13
after two stunning albums under his Converter project, i was looking forward to Exit Ritual. He was even playing at a club the night i bought the album. His live set was great, and just what any fan of rythmic noise would ask for. So when we left the club with our hands tightly clutching his new album we were very very excited. What we got was poor. Droning atmospheres that went nowhere and were seamingly created with little or no imagination whatsoever. Its not that I dont like dark ambient, i do, but this was lacklustre.
Having recently bought his newer album released under his own name (Scott Sturgis - In A Haze) I can see what he was trying to achieve with Exit Ritual, its just a shame that he didnt get it right first time round, but it did rest my mind that it was just a case of trying something new as opposed to just not being bothered.
