Album Description
Whitman McGowan serves up a giant helping of sci-fi, sex and social commentary heavily laced with humor on his new spoken word cd Caught in the Act. This counterculture cluster of live recordings from Europe and North America features music by one-man blues band Bob Log III, New Orleans style folksters The Dead Brothers, unearthly cellist Michael Kott, emerging techno artists DJ Louka (Shiva Airlines) and A- Poetik, Hollywood composer William Ashford and sitarist/prankster Baba Ganoush, with Canadian rockers John Crawford and John Woods rounding out the underground assemblage. Caught in the Act includes a new, interstellar version of McGowan's signature piece "White Folks Was Wild Once, Too" and a raucous finale accompanied by a huge performance ensemble with backup singers. Swiss label Little Records is the foreign distributor for this provocative, potent and spicy word and music coalescence.

In the opening track of this live CD, Michael Bublé explodes "I'm feeeling GOOD!" Who could blame him? He's backed by a big--make that a really big--band, and the song sounds like a million bucks. You may quibble that Bublé is a nice fellow who's a bit lacking in both the charisma and swing departments, but the music here percolates with bouncing energing--just listen to "Summer Wind" or "The More I See You" to see how glorious arrangements (by Johnny Mandel and John Clayton Jr., respectively) can propulse a reasonably gifted but by no means transcendent singer into the stratosphere. Best of all, Bublé once again shows his ability to seamlessly bridge eras and styles by offering stylistically consistent covers of the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" (done swing-style) and Lou Rawls' 1976 hit "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" (done crooner-style in a duet with Italian singer Laura Pausini). (The DVD offers up a similar take on Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," for instance.) The DVD portion of this combo set doubles the ante by offering 18 tracks (plus a bonus "Song for You" with Chris Botti) to the CD's 8. There's also a 20-minute backstage featurette showing what goes into the preparation for the show. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Great value!.......2007-07-25

I love this music. Great orchestra backing up the songs with fantastic arrangements and musicianship. The vocals are done with taste and excitement.

4 out of 5 stars Buble'.......2007-07-22

If it weren't for the DVD, this rating would have been a 3 star. The DVD is great, but the CD doesn't contain all the songs from the DVD, and the editing is terrible. As an example, Michael introduces his #1 hit song as the next number, but another song follows! Michael still sounds good as ever but given a second chance, I would probably purchase another of his CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2007-07-21

You get the best of both worlds with Michael's "Caught in the Act": a CD with some of the songs from the live concert and, of course, the DVD so you can see Michael's superb performance. Thank God a young singer finally came along who appreciates the great standards of yesteryear and who sings them superbly. You couldn't ask for anything more. Bravo Buble.

5 out of 5 stars caught in the act.......2007-06-29

the only buble dvd out that's worth it's wait in gold. the sound is great and the band is the best..all young musicians under 35 yrs. old. God bless them..buy this keepsake

5 out of 5 stars You are so gonna love it!!!.......2007-06-19

I have never liked concert videos very much. Even when I loved a singer or a band it was hard for me sit through an entire concert DVD, no matter how handsome or talented they were. I guess I felt it was a poor experience compared to the excitement of the real thing.

But Caught In The Act is so good that even I can't stop watching it. Why? Well...

1. Michael Bublé is a great singer. No, he is a great PERFORMER. He has no only a beautiful, velvet-like voice but he feels every song and it shows.

2. Great band! Awesome musicians. It's a real privilege to see and listen to such an amazing group of artists.

3. The songs are wonderful. Some may say that Bublé plays safe with proved hits but he sings every song in his unique style without betraying the spirit of the genre.

4. The guy is so funny!!! "Caught In The Act" is like one of those 2x1 specials. You get a great concert AND live comedy! His "impersonation" act is hilarious, especially because this time there is a surprise for him too.

5. And it doesn't hurt that the guy is good looking too. Absolutely NOT the most important part of the show but a nice bonus nevertheless.

This CD+DVD is an absolutely MUST. There is no way you will regret buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Live Music.......2006-09-19

This is Styx's only live album with all of the 5 classic members of Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw, James Young, Chuck Panozzo, and John Panozzo. It is a very well done 2-disc album. With 7 songs on each disc this is a must have for every hard-core Styx fan. This is better than Return To Paradise and all the other live albums Styx has made with Lawrence Gowan. This was when Styx was at their peak and on the edge of their hiatus from 84 to 90. So seriously buy this album. My personal favorite on this album has to be Blue Collar Man (Long Nights). That song alone is worth the price of admission I mean the price of this album. This is really good music that you won't be able to find on today's music this style of talent + creativity = great music is most definetly gone. So buy this CD because you'll never hear music like this on an album or live ever again.

5 out of 5 stars The last album from Styx's classic lineup LIVE!.......2005-11-29

Styx released their first live album, the 2-disc Caught in the Act in April of 1984.
The album(and its off-shoot video) was recorded in April of 1983 on the band's Kilroy Was Here tour in New Orleans, Louisiana. Most Styx fans want to compare this album to 1997's Return to Paradise. Caught in the Act slightly has the edge as the band had more energy and were still an active touring band at the time.
The album leads off with the studio track Music Time, which was a US charting hit peaking at #40 in the Spring of 1984 yet doesn't appear on either Greatest Hits 1 or 2 or the recently released Come Sail Away Anthology, so you will have to get the track here.
The actual concert kicks off with Mr. Roboto which features keyboardist and vocalist Dennis DeYoung acting out and singing the song live(although the band used the backing track as the band's equipment was hidden thanks to the props on-stage during the track). You can hear his grunts as he struggles to remove the Roboto mask(you can see this on the Caught in the Act video which may now be on DVD). Roboto was given new life with the VW commercial in 1999 but when taken out of context outside of the Kilroy Was Here concept it doesn't work. Within Kilroy the song has meaning.
The live album has songs that are not on the video(Babe, Suite Madame Blue, Miss America, Fooling Yourself and Crystal Ball) and vice versa(the Kilroy film, Heavy Metal Poisoning, Cold War(with extra verses and a long Tommy Shaw guitar solo), Renegade(complete with band getting arrested and John Panozzo drum solo), Haven't We Been Here Before and the Don't Let it End Reprise).
Other highlights on this album are Too Much Time on My Hands, Snowblind, Rockin the Paradise, Blue Collar Man, Don't Let it End(which is better than the studio version), The Best of Times and Come Sail Away.
The Caught in the Act album was the final album the classic lineup of Styx ever released and is a great testament to the classic lineup.
Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars three and one-half stars.......2005-02-17

In 1984 when this effort was released it seemed like the perfect album at the perfect time for the boys, but as years have gone by it's obvious to me that it was about one year too late. The Styx machine really pushed the envelope of credibility with "Kilroy..." especially after the almost perfect "Paradise Theater", a real winner that still is the benchmark for 80's pop/rock. So when "Caught in the Act ..Live" was released it could not build on the momentum the band had built because "Kilroy.." was slowly killing it. However, the live set really is a nice package, a bit more raw sounding today than it was in the 80s, but still a nice representation of the band's live act. The setlist is very good, with a slight nod to the band's pre-Tommy Shaw period (should have been a bigger nod, but...)and plenty of top-notch musicianship to go around 100 garage-rock bands. One point of note is "Cold War" is absent from the CD but it was released on the accompanying video, and really makes the video release shine. Looking back JY's choice of axes at the time included a horrible sounding Ibanez that has the most over-processed sound you'll hear this side of a Mutt Lange produced album, ie: Def Lep's Hysteria LP. In the end the band delivers, as we all know they can (if you've ever seen the tandem of JY and Tommy Shaw duo live) and Dennis DeYoung's keyboards are note-perfect. The LP also contains the studio single "Music Time" which, I belive was recorded after the departure of Tommy Shaw (don't hold me to this however), and the video, if you can ever catch it on the tele, is pretty darn clever and humerous, as is the song itself. It's nice to see this side of the band which at times during their steller run of releases in the 1970s was a bit too serious. But hey, don't forget, this is Styx here, they WERE being serious, their heyday was during a time when rock and roll musicians were beginning to stretch out a bit and show that the genre WAS to be taken seriously and over the top was considered cool. So put on your parachute pants, a horrible-print, brightly colored shirt, and italian loafers and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM, BAD REVIEWS.......2004-11-21

Well it is true that this CD features not all the hits that they have. It is true the band were crumbling at this point of their career. And most of all, it is true that one song was guilty for this band to go nowhere after this realese "Mr. Roboto".

Other than this, it's a great damn album that if you bought it years ago you probably enjoy it as much as I. Of course, this is a kind of soundtrack of their tour Kilroy was here and they became actor-musicians, you can here on the album portions of what they are talking about, and if you saw the Caught in the act Video you realize what this is all about.

I got into Styx after this album so probably I'll overratedit but the live versions of Blue collar man, Don't let it end, The best of times, Come sail away and some others make this album a true gem. On the other side, the first time I heard Music time I hated but after a few listens it grows on you and probably in the end you will happily laugh.

In the eighties a lot of bands had the same effect. After a big world hit, the group is about to disband and they had to release a live album so they can breathe and take a break, and maybe, just maybe they survived (of course with a not very good album). I'm talking about Styx, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and some others. Thank God for this phenomenon because most of the albums were damn good.

Well, what else can I say.....................It's the original line up, it has a lot of energy, the ballads are great, the rockers too. If your are a fan, you already have it. If you are a beginner fan, you better give it a shot it's a nice part of Styx Story.

Highlights: Don't let it end, The best of times, Babe
Lowlights: Miss America ( I would have included another one)

3 out of 5 stars The last gasp for the most popular Styx lineup!.......2004-09-25

The 1984 release Styx Caught in the Act,captures the most popular Styx lineup at the end of their career. The album was recorded on the supporting tour for Kilroy was Here in 1983,which was a disasterous tour.Anyway after Styx broke up A&M released Caught in the Act which contains 14 of Styx's classic songs, leaving out a few big hits like Renegade,The Grand Illusion, and Lady, but most of the other big hits are present like Too Much Time on My Hands,Babe,Snowblind,Blue Collar Man,Come Sail Away, and some of the stronger albums cuts.Caught in the Act is a good album, but consider some of the songs that are missing it's an incomplete representation of Styx in concert.Worth owning, just the songs are a mixed bag.

4 out of 5 stars A very good Rock Live album.......2007-06-17

I was a kid in the seventies, my favorite band were Uriah Heep, Deep Purple and Grand Funk. I still like these bands and listening to "Caught in the Act" reminds me the good seventies. This is a very good Rock album and contains the "almost" perfect choice of songs, the sound is very good.
A must have if you are a fan of the band or a classic rock music lover !

5 out of 5 stars This is what happens .......2007-05-29

Having seen Grand Funk 5 times from 1970-75 which of course is the time of all the live recordings of them, I can tell you that this is the tale end of a great live band. Grand Funk was always known as a live band and they had many problems selling their studio albums for that reason. Having seen the down and raunchy to the "we are getting tired of doing this" concerts, it is a great story and I still listen with wonder to the live recordings reliving the idea that I was deaf for 3 days after the concert in the Boston Gardens in 71-72 (hard to remember which year)and my friend Ronnie who after the third song laid down on the chairs (we were on the floor about 50 feet fromt he stage) closed her eyes and never got up again until the last song when I think she was able to handle the whole thing again. The last time I saw them was at the Hampton Roads Colisium in Hampton Virginia in 75 and was the culmination again of fan distress when one of the fans reached up and pulled the cord from Marks guitar as he was flying across the stage (again I was down front)caught up in Inside Looking Out and all the while shaking his head at the fan pleading for him not to pull it out, but he did anyway and of course prophetically that was the end of a great era. Greatest Live Rock band ever.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent re-master job! GFR LIVE!!!.......2007-03-01

If you are a GFR fan, this re-master is a must have! Don't mess about, just buy it. It sounds great in my truck CD system, but man, it's too cool to listen to the whole CD when I have the time to kill around the house, late at night.
Excellent buy...

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-01-29

If I could travel back in time going to this concert would be on my top 5 "to do list"!!

5 out of 5 stars Counterpoint.......2006-05-17

Badartfilms needs to dial-back the valium intake. Most reviewers have this one nailed: "Caught in the Act" is one of the best live rock albums ever recorded, in spite of the so-so production values of the original. (Haven't actually heard this remix/remaster.) Hyper-energized and full of the all-out attitude that made the era great, this record embodies all that was 60's/70's rock.

"We're gonna take a step back and dedicate this song . . . to everybody who's puttin' that funky smell into the air . . . We want you to blow some up this way!"

5 out of 5 stars Totally off the wall ! ! !.......2006-12-09

She's the Jewish Louis Prima and Keely Smith...

Sporting a crack ensemble featuring wailing tenor, wild bongo beating, tight and swinging Vegas style Rock 'n Roll/Jazz - - Frances Faye doesn't just sing... she devours... Campy, strung out and off the wall she segues in and out of tunes, cracks one liners and entertains with a Capital E... - - To put it bluntly, you have to be a total *ss not to get into it... and the band... so tight... with false intros, endings, sudden tempo changes, and everyone amply featured, it is something almost unimaginable today...

There is NO reason why this album is so far off the radar... This is ultra hip retro lounge at its best ! ! !

5 out of 5 stars Frances Faye-Caught in the Act.......2005-09-19

Frances Faye was an entertainer's entertainer. During the Fifties, her night club audiences were made up of such greats as Judy Garland, Julie London, & Sammy Davis, Jr. to name just a few. She had a genius for comic timing, & her musicality was bold, raw, & original. Today, her talent is vastly underrated & virtually unknown. These live recordings capture the essence of her wit, drive, & spunk. Thank goodness someone has put them out on CD! Hopefully, other recordings will follow!

5 out of 5 stars The Fabulous Frances Faye.......2005-08-23

What a wonderful CD! The music is great, and Frances is as witty as ever! I feel like I am actually at her shows when I listen to the CD!
Her unique voice gives a depth to her singing. Her band is also amazing- you cannot help but keep time to the music! Throughout her songs, she chats with the audience, making her even more enjoyable. A wonderful combination of singer and comedienne.
If you enjoy music, you will enjoy this CD!

5 out of 5 stars I'm Drunk With Love!.......2005-07-02

This is one of the best CDs you will ever listen to and it will grab you from the opening bongo solo through to the last horn wail. Great jazz from top-notch musicians of the fifties filtered through the voice and style of one of the most accomplished and unique comedienne/singer/piano players in history. Frances played music through six decades, beginning in NY in the late twenties through to her last concert in San Francisco in 1981. She kept the best of the old stuff in and added new hits to her act every year. The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, The Animals, all the kids making music in the 60's revered her, just like the celebs of every decade before (Bing Crosby, Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Buddy Hackett, Judy Garland, Betty Grable, Mitzi Gaynor, Peggy Lee...they were all her fans.) There has never been another like her although Bette Midler certainly learned a thing or two from FF! My band and I pay tribute to this entertainment legend every weekend at our nightclub show in San Francisco. It took two years to put it together because of how difficult it is to get information and recordings. She recorded 12 albums from 1953 to 1964 for Capitol, Bethlehem, Imperial, GNP Crescendo, Verve, and Regina, and about 20 78's and 45's. This CD release of "Caught In The Act" started the ball rolling and it's been a ball ever since. I highly recommend this cd!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful........2006-12-08

Eric Gable's debut CD was a very strong set of Quiet Storm ballads and uptempo New Jack Swing/Hip-Hop club tracks. Gable's soulful, gritty and powerful vocal style and delivery leave no doubt as to his being influenced by such legends as Al Green, Marvin Gaye and Teddy Pendergrass but he proved himself a fine son stylist in his own right. Sadly, the album spawned only two minor hits and was not the mainstream success it should have been.

5 out of 5 stars Great Debut!.......2003-11-26

I bought this album on LP back in 1989 when it was released. It wasn't released domestically in Canada, so I found it at a DJ record store for $14.99, which was big bucks to pay for an album back in the day. It was well worth the money! The song "Remember(The First Time)" was and still is one of my favourite slow jams. The title song, "Caught In The Act" is great too. It's too bad that this album didn't catch on like it should have because Eric Gable gives a solid performance throughout. If you like artists like Luther Vandross, Will Downing, and Freddie Jackson, this album will not disappoint!

3 out of 5 stars Gable's Got Vocals!.......2003-09-18

Eric Gable's debut, Caught In The Act, generated a good buzz, but not enough for mainstream hits. This excellect vocalist (in the same league as Luther Vandross, Freddie Jackson, and James Ingram) got a little air play, as did some album cuts, but Gable just barely missed getting the smash hit he needed on his 89 debut.

5 out of 5 stars Live, loud and superb.......1999-12-10

For anybody who has never heard RCR, this is the album for you. The quality is excellent considering it is live and the whole 'buzz' of the album makes toes tap and fingers snap. Eddie Nichols' vocals are razor sharp, sharper than the whole bands dress sense. All the tracks are overflowing with snappy, fast beats and some exceptional horn work from Scott Steen. Tracks of note are Mousetrap and hot rod. This is one album you will wear out before tiring of that RCR sound.

5 out of 5 stars Best live swing album by the best swing band!.......1999-10-31

This album is what swing is all about: you got you got fast swing, some slower swing to use while you and your honey cool down, and it's all performed by the best swing band around. Eddie Nichols' vocals ring crystal clear (as they should in any good live recording) and as usual, he's in perfect pitch. And of course, the boys all got his back and play their instruments to swingin' perfection. The great part is being able to hear every instrument and all the vocals clearly, and boy do those cats put on a show! I've seen RCR live and this cd completely does them justice. Now I just wish they'd come out with another live one! If you're a fan of RCR, or swing in general, buy this cd!

5 out of 5 stars SWINGIN!!!!!! thats all i can say.......1999-01-01

This album gave a great effort and i am gonna continue to listen to it. I like every song on this album it is just plain SWINGIN!!!

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best live album I have ever heard.......1998-12-31

I recently picked up the live Royal Crown Revue CD and it is incredible. I put off getting this disc for a while after having been a fan of the band for some time, being skeptical of other live recordings I have heard in the past of other musicians. This skepticism was erased by Eddie and the rest of the solid RCR lineup. This disc swings into high gear with crisp precision that is witnessed on their studio records and with the energy and entertainment of a live show. This disc should make any swing fan who has not got to see these guys perform see them live. I know I am anxiously awaiting my chance. Thumbs up for a terrific album and band.

5 out of 5 stars This album epitomizes the revival of swing........1998-12-23

Royal Crown Revue shows us what musicians are supposed to be in this disc. Constantly being played in both my car and at home, I never get tired of these tunes. This album has a perfect mix of fast and furious to laid-back and easy. Everything that any swing or jazz-crazed fan would appreciate packed into a thin piece of hardware.

Product Description

Servants fourth album originally burst onto the scene in 1983, with ten new studio cuts released on the bands own Rooftop Records. With their first three albums delighting headbangers world-wide, CAUGHT IN THE ACT OF LOVING HIM showcased a Spransy-influenced new-wave feel that also embraced the arena rock sound Servant was known for. This new-wave feel would eventually take over the bands 5th and 6th albums (Light Maneuvers & Swimming In a Human Ocean). Undoubtedly, CAUGHT IN THE ACT OF LOVING HIM set new standards for quality Christian rock that could stand up next to the best the mainstream rock world had to offer. Ultimately, blissful power pop made Servants CAUGHT IN THE ACT OF LOVING HIM one of the defining albums of its era, as well as one of the most influential. Servant proved to be masters at devoting themselves to the power of the hook, as well as sheer volume and gut-wrenching rock roll. Bruce Wrights hook-laden guitar playing was capable of miracles, and you'll find examples of that on virtually every cut. With pop thrills a-plenty, CAUGHT... offers an invigorating blast of feedback, muscular riffs, anthemic hooks, and powerful vocals with keyboards and beat that don't let up. From start to finish, CAUGHT...is a relentless rocker, a great album that has outlasted its era. Fans can proudly file this release next to The Cars, Cheap Trick, Duran Duran, Petra, and early 77s. Yes, its THAT good! Songs: BURNING BRIDGES - THANK GOD - FALL OUT - NOW IS THE TIME - HOLDING ON TO YOU HEART TO HEART - GAUGES - SOMETHING RIGHT FOR YOU - TIED DOWN - CAN'T GO BACK

5 out of 5 stars One Of My Favorite Albums, By My Favorite Band.......2007-03-12

This is one of my favorite albums. It includes one of my all-time favorite songs: "Burning Bridges". That is a song I'd love to be able to perform.

If you want to be technical and wanted me to list my favorites from the album, I could list ten of them. Considering this is a ten song album, that obviously includes all. But besides the one I mentioned, I'll also include "Holding On To You" (written by guitarist Bruce Wright, and arranged by my favorite keyboardist Matt Spransky), "Heart To Heart" (I enjoyed the performance of this song live), "Gauges" and "Something Right" (both of which have a fun sound), and "Tied Down."

I highly recommend this for your record collection.

4 out of 5 stars Good Music.......2006-10-24

Bias: I grew up with the musicians and they are good friends of mine.

Servant was the type of band that didn't make as much money as they might, for they wanted to be true to the message. Not their message, or even their sound, but The Message. Most Christian groups have their biggest following among Christians. But most Chrisian groups don't preach to Christians, calling them to return to the way of Christ. Servant consistently spoke about poverty and justice, about the call to live in poverty with Christ and care for the poor, to truly be community to each other and not just a church, to go out and be The Church. This was especially true in Now Is The Time, where a lasor would map out the entire world as Servant played, becoming the first major Christian group to use lasors in their sets.

A little note: That's Randy MacDonald on the front cover, the bus driver for the band. He was the only one at the time who had reflective sunglasses, so he got on the cover.
