This was a great cd. it came on time and was as promised in good condition. I would recomend the seller again.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2007-05-30

I bought this CD because I missed listening to the music my grandfather played. This CD brought back a flood of memories for me. Wonderful compilation of my favorite italian classics.

3 out of 5 stars So-So CD.......2007-04-06

This is more cafe style but still worth listening to.
Great dinner background music.

2 out of 5 stars This CD will put you to sleep.......2007-02-26

We bought this CD for our daughter's wedding. After reviewing it, we could have saved our money. The version of Funiculi sounded like the Salvation Army band and it was totally lifeless. Lou Monte's Hey Gumbaree (it is actually Eh Cumpare in Italian--that should have given it away) was awful, and he consistently butchers the Italian language in all his other songs (annoying, I mean, couldn't he have learned the right pronunciation?).

While Perry Como and others have melodic voices (and very wisely sing in English because they don't know Italian), these are '50s versions of the songs, for the most part. While you have to appreciate them, they are really old and reflect the '50s type of instrumention and style. Would have loved to have heard all these songs done in a fresh and original way. Soldi Soldi was our favorite by far, and that is why we gave the CD two stars.

Could have gone to the library for this one.

Thanks for letting me voice our opinion. We are a big Italian family and just spent hundreds of dollars buying every CD out there for our daughter's wedding and figured we would share our opinion with others.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

5 out of 5 stars Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

5 out of 5 stars JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

While the Allman Brothers Band garnered the majority of attention during their four-decade careers, their contemporaries in Southern rock the Marshall Tucker Band have been more quietly, but just as consistently, making quality music. Only vocalist Doug Gray remains from the original sextet, yet the group's sound hasn't changed substantially, as their breezy mix of jazz, blues, and country doesn't need updating to remain fresh. Their unlikely emphasis on flute defined a style that was lighter and less boogie-oriented than most of the harder-driving acts of their era. Perhaps not surprisingly, age has mellowed them even further, and this album's one rocker, "Travelin' Man," seems forced next to the warm melodic roots and country twang that otherwise dominate. Gray's graying vocals have lost a bit of steam, but the band sounds terrific, and most of the songs glow like burnished gold. The somewhat clichéd topics of music, cowboys, horses, and the road appear, but when the elements mesh, as on "Cold Steel," "The Guitar Playing Man," and "Crossroad," favorable comparisons can be made with some of the band's finest. Coming this late in the Marshall Tucker Band's career, that's an unlikely and impressive feat. --Hal Horowitz

4 out of 5 stars A Step Down, But Still Quite Good.......2007-06-29

THE NEXT ADVENTURE is a step down from Marshall Tucker's outstanding last CD, BEYOND THE HORIZON, but it still has four great songs on it. Unfortunately, the first good song doesn't come until the fifth song, "Cold Steel", so this CD gets four stars instead of five. In other words, unlike BEYOND THE HORIZON, this CD probably won't appeal to the casual MTB fan; it's more for the dedicated Tucker follower who totally agrees with leader Doug Gray's advocacies of sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, increased funding for law enforcement, and capital punishment or life without parole for kidnappers. If you disagree with Gray and guitarist/singer Chris Hicks on ANY of these issues, you might want to stick with the 70s/early 80s reissues (except TUCKERIZED), LIVE ON LONG ISLAND 4-18-80, and BEYOND THE HORIZON.

3 out of 5 stars A NICE CD.......2007-06-19

MTB latest is a refreshing, breezy musical journey. its been a long 30+yrs for the band and as with all bands--suffered tragic losses etc. MTB has struck paydirt with 10 passionate songs that spin cowboys and the west. DOUG GRAY is still the keeper of the stable and his voice is tired but true. there are 3 songs from GEORGE MCCORKLE and one from TOY CALDWELL and both need no introduction. highlights are: A SAD COWBOY SONG and I LOVE YOU THAT WAY-thrown in a couple well to do rockers and you have a great lazy day lemonade song parade. with each listen I like it just a little more. its not the 70's but this is a good reflection of past experiences. good one boys.

5 out of 5 stars The music becomes part of you..........2007-07-08

The Scarlet Pimpernel is so rich and lyrical, and the story is so compelling, it has become part of who I am. Delivered by a magnificent cast, the music is visceral. Take a ride on the "Carousel" and go "Into the Fire." Vive'!

5 out of 5 stars A piece of greatness.......2007-07-02

Each of the three official Scarlet Pimpernel recordings have things to offer, but this is probably a good choice for starters. In my opinion, Rex Smith on this recording and Terrance Mann on the OBC both do a phenominal job on "Falcon In The Dive" and "Where's The Girl." The same goes with Rachel York and Christine Andreas's performances-- although I tend to prefer Rachel a bit more. Both of the re-recorded tracks by her are simply amazing. Although I can understand why this production never had much of a staged success, the score is simply gorgeous.

5 out of 5 stars SCARLET PIMPERNEL .......2007-06-15

I have a cassette version (yep, a cassette!) of this musical, as I collect
musicals for professional reasons.....I like Frank Wildhorn's music, but the first and foremost reason I bought THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL is because
my favorite actor Terrence Mann originated the role of CHAUVELIN. His cover of WHERE'S THE GIRL sends little shivers up my spine....wooo! That song is worth the price the CD! Teri

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Musical.......2007-05-24

The music has everything - romance, wit, lush melodies, slapstick comedy. Quite the best music in a musical show for some years. I can't wait for the show to be produced in the U.K.

4 out of 5 stars Quite Fantastic.......2007-05-13

This was the first time I had ever heard the Scarlet Pimpernel's music. I first stumbled onto the fact that there was a Scarlet Pimpernel musical when I was surfing YouTube and came across a music video which consisted of a recording of 'Falcon in the Dive'.
I was spell-bound. After hearing snippets of some of the other songs, i ordered this CD. I was a little surprised when I got it to find some pieces that I didn't remember seeing in the libretto. However, I have since discovered that there are quite a number of different recordings with some variety in the pieces that are included.
It is a truly charming and impressive sountrack. Douglas Sills impressed me deeply with his wide range of talent. He transposes himself from a heart-wrenching sincerity (The Prayer) to a glriously hilarious foppishness (The Creation of Men, The Scarlet Pimpernel). For someone with such a wonderful voice, he does do an exquisitely inane laugh.
Christine Andreas was very sweet as Marguerite, though I felt she over-did the tremulo slightly.
I was blown away by Terrence Mann. His Chauvelin was magnificent. Powerful, passionate, soothing, and vengeful. In the musical, I felt, Chauvelin regained some humanity.
The pieces are clever and vibrant, covering an impressive range of emotions. The lyrics can be full of pathos, or extraordinarily witty, and I enjoyed the CD very much indeed.
The only regret I have is that I am unlikely ever to see the stage performance. I can heartily reccomend this soundtrack to anyone who enjoys the Scarlet Pimpernel, or indeed anyone who appreciates fine singing.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation - and that's just the first half........2005-09-14

I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.

Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.

The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)

The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.

"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.

"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.

"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.

When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.

To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it

5 out of 5 stars The best of Elfman!!!.......2005-09-05

I was obsessed about getting this CD right from when I heard about it. I found it at the library and was so excited about it, and it didn't let me down. In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and creepy (strange mix, but it really works!) collection of Danny Elfman's film and television soundtracks. The first track, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, is probably my favorite. Also, I really like Batman and Wisdom. Batman is creepy and dark, and Wisdom is just weird, in the best possible way.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection, A LIttle Too Eclectic.......2003-08-19

You should be able to tell from the movies and TV shows listed here whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. It's a little too eclectic for my tastes (hence only 4 stars) but better than volume 2. I think thatthe miscellaneous collected ites here along with the previously unreleased stuff should make this worth buying. Especially if you're a fan of Elfman's movie soundtrack work.

5 out of 5 stars What Great Music.......2003-05-11

I fell in love with the music of Danny Elfman when Beetlejuice came out. There was something different about the music that he made. When Edward Scissorhands, and then Nightmare Before Christmas - I knew this man was a musical master. Its the verbal form of surrealism.

5 out of 5 stars super.......2003-04-17

What a great CD. Danny's music is so original and inventive. this CD contains his pre 90's quirky, gothic music. it's all very well written and beautifully orchestrated. batman and darkman contain some really excellent long, dark, gothic cues that really take u away from reality. in my opinion no one, apart from howard shore, is as inventive and original as danny in the world of filmmusic. he far surpasses the repetitive works of williams or horner. buy this, and volume two, and keep supporting one of the greatest film composers of all time.ohh...and buy fellowship of the ring and two towers by howard shore....amazing work!

Product Description

Much of this recording was conceived as a twenty-year update and progression from the duos masterpiece Chiaroscuro, released on Windham Hill Records in 1985, which sold over 65,000 copies. As Darol and Mike have both learned so much about life and music since then, they hoped to extrapolate on what would become a lot of folks favorite instrumental recording. The wish to make a musical message from the future that would reflect their present emotional, intellectual and spiritual selves. They tried to not get too hung up on perfection but to communicate a vibe; to showcase the glorious sounds of their string instruments playing music in a space big enough to do it in.

5 out of 5 stars Reinventing tradition while keeping the vibe organic and stimulating.......2007-05-08

Playing Time - 53:28 -- George Harrison once stated, "It doesn't matter if you are the greatest guitar player in the world, if you're not enlightened, forget it." Conceived as a sequel to the monumental 1985 album "Chiaroscuro" (on the Windham Hill label) that sold 65,000 copies in five years, "Woodshop" captures the enlightenment in each and every note, as well as with the silent spaces left between them. "Chiaroscuro" was not their first release together, however. In 1983, they had put out "The Duo" on Rounder Records. And since "Chiaroscuro," Marshall and Anger have collaborated on a 1998 "Christmas Heritage" project and five other fine CDs between 1999-2002 on Alison Brown's Compass Records (New Grange, Anger-Marshall Band JAM, Brand New Can, At Home and on the Range). If you're a musician, there's even a Mel Bay publication ("The Mike Marshall Collection") that includes standard music notation and mandolin tablature for 11 of his compositions (seven drawn from Marshall/Anger albums in the past). Besides proficient musicianship. what's always impressed me about these guys is that everything they've done has creativity, strength, and lasting power. More than just string music on viagra, "Woodshop" is worthy of being heard over and over again to appreciate the nuances of each piece.

The substantive body of Woodshop's 51-minute musical journey is nine instrumental compositions that feature Mike and Darol's violins, mandolins, guitars, mandocello, mandola, and cello. Of particular curiosity is a piece like "Replaceitall" also with Darol's rhythm programming, mystery slap beat, and shakers. It's a "kind of tribute to the Rolling Stones," and the title refers to Keith Richards' 1970s buzz about getting all his blood replaced in Switzerland before going on tour. In a similar vein and arranged with numerous instruments playing the melody in unison, Marshall's "The Creep" has such instruments as bass altered mandocello, hyper-mando, and electro-banjo-creepola. With many other strings in the mix, the folkestra sound is low, eerie and hypnotic. Whether the multi-tracking achieves the sensation of fear, repugnance, and downright creepiness is up to a listener's imagination and perception. As for me, upon initial listens of this disc, I did tend to favor more straightforward compositions that make more traditionally-based and focused statements. These included Hearts Wait, Peter Pan, Slip and Slide, Bach Up, and The Unbearable Gift. Over seven minutes, "Borealis" begins with just mandocello and violin before the song's genesis dynamically takes us into a full sound based on Mike's fantasy of having an entire audience pull out their instruments and jam along while marching towards the stage. Whatever happened to the fantasy of just having teary-eyed teenage girls rushing the stage? In keeping with the need for breathing room and transition, the 51-minute musical journey also has five short (one minute or less) interludes from beginning to end of the CD.

Four of the tracks feature some splendid bass or percussion accompaniment by other consummate musicians. Two cuts (Hearts Wait, The Unbearable Gift) have the inimitable Todd Phillips on bass. It brought back memories of New Grange days in the late-1990s when Mike, Darol and Todd played in that band with Tim O'Brien and Alison Brown. Earlier in Woodshop's set, "Peter Pan" includes Phil Aaberg (piano), Todd Sickafoose (upright bass), and Aaron Johnston (shaker, cymbals). "Who Had Whom?" includes Michael Manring (electric bass) and Aaron Johnston (percussion). All guest artists have highly-acclaimed credentials and reputations as virtuosos. Manring had a long association with Windham Hill Records, and he's a gifted composer of experimental music. Manring's collaboration with Anger and Marshall goes back as far as the early-1980s when all three played in Montreux (with Barbara Higbie and Andy Narell). A San Francisco native, the versatile Todd Sickafoose studied and performed in Los Angeles for six years before returning to the Bay Area in 1999. Montanan Philip Aaberg is a world-class keyboardist and composer who is comfortable in many genres and whose 2002 "Live From Montana" album was nominated for a Grammy. A graduate of Wichita State University's music program, Aaron Johnston is a versatile percussionist who also appeared with Anger & Marshall on their 1999 album, JAM. He currently performs with Brazilian Girls.

Marshall and Anger are now on the new Adventure Music label that wants to build a cadre of top musicians from North and South America who play unadorned, rhythmic and raw acoustic music. It's a good fit, and "Woodshop" illustrates the musicians' continual learning, logical progression and development. Marshall sees glimmers of a new musical style emerging that really incorporates many styles into one global sound. Darol and Mike have always been inspired to break down barriers between genres, and to cross boundaries between songwriting and improvisation. "Woodshop" displays elements of jazz, chamber music, folk, bluegrass and experimental music. Discovery and versatility create a fresh acoustic sound rooted in tradition. Mike and Darol continue to show that tradition can be reinvented to keep the vibe organic and stimulating. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars Most Triumphant!!!.......2006-07-02

A most Excelent compliment to the bodacious movie this soundtrack is very cool! My friend showed me the movie like a year ago and it is my favorite movie now. Be Excellent To Each Other And Party On Dudes!

3 out of 5 stars A fun soundtrack to a fun movie.......2006-05-10

Many of the reviews of this album that have already been posted make a range of excellent points. First of all let me just say that this movie was fun and really captured the times. The soundtrack tries to do the same but doesn't quite match the movie. For both to be in synch we had to wait for the second film.

Anyway, for what it's worth here is my track by track analysis.

Extreme - Play with me - This is a juvenile yet way cool track. The guitar work is great, a real standout and has some quite distinctive Nuno Bettencourt touches. The guy had way too much talent for one human being. I can see how the inherent silliness of the track may grate with some people though.

Vital Signs - The Boys and the girls are Doing It - my brain tells me that I don't like this song but my head keeps on bobbing away to it whenever I'm driving down the highway to this CD. A fun track that suited the movie.

Glen Burtnick - Not So Far Away - some may like this, but for me it's a total waste of space. I can't justify that opinion with any great insight - something inside me just hates this track.

Tora Tora - Dancing With A Gypsy - Ah yes Tora Tora. They were utterly lambasted at the time. I've never heard any of their albums so don't know if that was fair or not. But anyway, on the strenght of this track they were the audio version of a good party. Mindless yet totally fun and the track bounces along with bright and buoyant good vibes.

Shark Island - Father Time - why didn't Shark Island break big. No forget big, why didn't they break huge. This band do themselves a big favour with this track. I'm convinced half of their album sales were due to the inclusion of two of their tracks on this soundtrack. Strong song, strong vocals, a band with intent and they actually manage to combine some ooommpphh into their tunes while still making their songs fun. Nice solid guitar work but it's the vocals that really rip for my mind.

Big Pig - I Can't Break Away - Big Pig were not one of my things at the time. They were deemed to be somewhere between a pop band and a rock band with a gimmick name. However they'd had a hit or two at the time and I gotta admit, even a dedicated hard rocker such as myself can enjoy the uplifting vibes of this tune. And the female vocals with actual strength are darn good.

Shark Island - Dangerous - this is SI's second song on this album and is actually a far dumber beast than the first. And in my mind it's always synonymous with the scene in the film where the song was placed. See the film for what I mean. But that's not do dis this fine, fine tune from one of the unsung gems of the times.

Bricklin - Walk Away - the wheels fall off for me on this one, can't really stand it much. Sorry.

Robbie Robb - In Time - Don't know much about this chap, but I can say that this tune doesn't really do much for me. At this point the casual listener is starting to think about skipping back a few tracks to replay Big Pig and Shark Island, or maybe even Tora Tora.

Power Tool - Two Heads are Better than One - Excellent, as the Wylde Stalyns would say. This fine and fun toe tapping tune rounds out the album nicely, saving it from an ignominous end. Great mindless stuff and that's meant as a compliment in this case.

Overall the production values on this CD are good, and some cracking tunes make you forget the mediocre stuff. Given the different music on display here it's hard to figure out how the compiler could of come up with a better way of arranging the tracks, but the fact that the bands are so different could in some ears detract from the experience a little, but for the casual hard rock fan, well your sure to find a couple of gems here to float your boat.

Lastly, if your on the cusp of buying this record because you liked the movie, then my advice is to jump right in and buy it, after all it's the fun vibes of the movie that will enhance your listening pleasure.

3 out of 5 stars Cheap guitar thrills!!.......2005-07-27

Most of the music on this soundtrack is from bands that were preparing to release debut albums or from people "in the scene" at the time who cobbled together a band for fun.
Extreme has the first track here, which also appeared on their debut shortly thereafter in a slightly different form. Silly lyrics, absolutely killer guitar work by Nuno. The man absolutely shreds.
Glenn Burtnick is here. He is mostly a songwriter who has written hits for all kinds of people from Cyndi Lauper to Jo Dee Messina. A musician's musician, Jon Bon Jovi recruited him for the original inception of Bon Jovi in the early 80's. He puts together a nice, fun piece.
Shark Island was supposed to be big and therefore have 2 tracks here. For some reason they didn't make it but the songs are great.
The only other band worth mentioning is Power Tool. However you probably know them better from their massive hit album a couple years later called "After the Rain", recorded under the more familiar name of Nelson. Yup, the twin sons of Ricky Nelson with the flowing blonde locks. Their recording career started right here, folks.
Beyond that, it is what it is. Guitar rock for a teen movie from the 80's.

3 out of 5 stars WYLD STALYNS!.......2005-04-09

This soundtrack to the famous teen comedy, "Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure" is a great CD. This is pure Wyld Stalyns music. The whole CD is nothing but non-stop Rock and Roll. Included in this soundtrack is an excellent selection of music to capture the late 1980s.

The greatest tracks included on this CD are: "Boys and Girls Are Doing It" by Vital Signs (song while Napoleon is having fun on the Waterslides). This is an OUTSTANDING party tune. Great riffs and pure genious lyrics. You only heard half of what a materpiece this song is during the movie. The next track, "Not So Far Away" by Glen Burtnik is a great rock ballad. Very nice lyrics and great melody.

A couple tracks later, you'll hear a Heavy Metal classic by Shark Island, "Father Time" (when Rufus is getting ready to go back in time). This tune rocks all the way through. For five minutes you hear the greatest array of guitar solos ever! This song is definitely a masterpiece. Another pretty good tune is "I Can't Break Away" (during opening of the movie) by Big Pig. This is a cool tune with some interesting keyboard sounds and the female vocalist is great. Finally, one of the greatest ballads of all time, "In Time" (when Bill and Ted visit the future) by Robbi Robb. Outstanding lyrics and a very loving melody. Ballads may not get any better than this.

For those of you that loved the movie, now own the phenomenal soundtrack. "Be excellent to each other and Party on dudes."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tom Verlaine.......2007-07-07

Tom Verlaine's guitar has a unique voice. Either you love it - or you don't - Typically, big fans of groups like Styx, Toto, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Boston, Kansas and The Doobies... might not appreciate Verlaine's voicing and style. It's just off the radar enough to miss major classic rock radio play... you are more likely to hear Verlaine on a college radio station.

Adventure is my favorite Television album -Marquee Moon may be better - but I just like "The Fire" too much to knock this one down. The soloing is brilliant and the mood of the songs are laced with anticiaption that fully delivers.

I would especially recommend this album to a guitarist who is searching for a unique and brilliant sound.

If you do not like this music, it is strongly recommended that you buy a buick, grow a horrible mustache and start selling Amway products.

5 out of 5 stars Days, be more than all we have..........2007-05-20

When this album came out in the late seventies the critics said it didn't hold a candle to their debut album Marquee Moon. Over time its reputation grew until it was finally recognised for what it is- a work of near brilliance. It doesn't have the hard edge of MM, but that is where its appeal lies- the hard edges have been smoothed out and replaced with a dreamy, surreal quality that acheives moments of greatness- check out "Carried Away", one of the few keyboard-based Television songs, and especially the final track "The Dream's Dream"- the interplay of guitar work between Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd has never been better than on this track. One of the best late seventies albums, no question.

5 out of 5 stars Television: Adventure.......2007-03-02

As a casual fan, this is my favorite Television record. Marquee Moon is good, but this is just better in my opinion.

"Foxhole" is a leftover from the MM sessions, and it definitely sounds like it. It's totally out of place, and consequently is my least favorite song on the album. (If it had been on MM, it would have fit right in, and I probably would have loved it). Other than that, this album has a terrific flow to it, and is great for a laidback listening experience. Television is known as a guitar band, but that amazing and heartwrending piano from the MM song "Guiding Light" is back, in spades, on Adventure. With songs like "Days," "Careful" and "Carried Away," Adventure could have been titled: NYC Punks Discover Country & Western. Then subtitled: And Make Some Damn Good Music As A Result. The only skip-worthy song on the whole album is the weak 6-minute instrumental, "The Dream's Dream," which just meanders and goes nowhere. The bottom line though, for me, is that Adventure surpasses any of either Verlaine's or Lloyd's solo work--making it as the logical next step if you have heard MM and you want something more.

And yes, the awesome red cover helps a little bit too!

4 out of 5 stars Still a Great Band, But..........2007-01-13

...this is definitely NOT the same kind of material as their debut album "Marquee Moon". However, their second album is still pretty decent in its own right. Perhaps if it didn't have the towering shadow of their debut album looming over it, people might pay more attention to "Adventure". However, because it's predecessor is so brilliant, it is hard not to compare the two.

Television sounds more polished on "Adventure". Though practice is good, much of the rawness and improvised feel of "Marquee Moon" is not present here. Interestingly, "Careful" and "Foxhole", two of the stronger tracks on this album, were both older songs that Television had previously played in live sets. Many of the other songs give me the impression of being filler material and are nearly forgettable. "Glory" is a powerful opening track, on par with "See No Evil" from the first album. "Ain't That Nothin'" and the bonus track "Adventure" are also notable.

Though this album has many shortcomings, it shouldn't be as overlooked as it is. Television, one of the best "guitar bands" of all time (as far as I'm concerned), has relatively small catalogue of material and "Adventure" is by no means bad. It merely shows a different, softer side of the previously edgy, punk-rock band heard on "Marquee Moon".

4 out of 5 stars A different work then Marque Moon.......2006-11-15

I like this more than Marque Moon b/c this is a bit more commercial and accessible. I love "Glory" which is their most mainstream song. I also enjoy "The Dream's Dream" which has gorgeous guitar solos throughout and a very dramatic closing solo.

I think "Marque Moon" is over rated and "Adventure" is hugely under rated

How has noone mentioned Off To See the World??? This song alone makes the CD worth buying!! The other songs are sweet too, but in my opinion, its all about Off to see the World.

5 out of 5 stars I Love It........2006-02-24

I have loved this movie since I was a little girl (I'm now 25 with a child of my own) and would watch it over and over again....It was so bad that My mom said that the dog could have recited the script And a few years ago I looked for the Soundtrack for some reason and only found it on cassette. I bought it and played it over and over (It finally died) and I just replaced it. The songs are wonderful and playful I really love the songs "Girls of rock and roll" and "my mother". It's probally true that only real fans of the movie and little kids would like this CD but are we not all kids at heart? I hope that some day my own daughter will pick this soundtrack up and listen to all the fun songs on it.

5 out of 5 stars Chipmunks.......2006-01-10

Okay I've read some of the reviews and I agree with some of them but not all. The only non-chipmunks fans that wouldnt like this are the people who dont like the voices which at times make it hard to tell what they are singning. This movie is more recent than 1987 because then i was only a year old when it came out and i remeber buying it at a costco. There are 3 new songs on this soundtrack which make it better from the clips I've heard. Mexican Holiday and Flying with the egals probably would have gone where Lo Gusta and Off to see the world are. I love this soundtrack and I think anyone who gave it a chance would too. Thats the bottom line.Preview the songs just in case thats what they are for!

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2005-12-03

It has come to my attention that my little sister has been writing multiple reviews for an album (under my alias of Jimi Angus Morello) she doesn't own. However, has seen the movie and plays the 30 second clips, much to my anooyance, day in and day out. From what I have heard, this album is for fans of the Chipmunks and them only, there is nothing "special" about this album it is all very basic music, with easy to write lyrics. In conclusion, if you don't like the chipmunks you should only buy this CD to burn it, and i mean that in a literal sense.

5 out of 5 stars Ode to the Chipmunk Adventure.......2005-11-05

So me and my sister Dster are obsessed with this movie, we have been ever since we were wee tots. 5 out of 5 stars Still amazing after hundreds of spins.......2007-04-28

I've been listening to this amazing disk almost constantly since its release. The mandolin/mandocello/tenor guitar duets from Mike Marshall and Hamilton de Holanda on the CD and DVD are pure delight. The recording quality is exceptionally clear, perhaps the finest recording to date of mandolin tones.

Mike's playing is masterful, with technique in total service to his passion. His tone is clear and bright, and his solos and fills are exquisite. Hamilton's playing is audacious, edgy, explosive, and daring, delivering some of the most beautiful mandolin tones, and some of the most dazzlingly fast and sparkling solos I've ever heard.

My personal favorites after many spins are the opening track "Receita de Samba", followed by "Sao Jorge" (so beautiful!), "Egypt", "Big Country", "Valse em Si", "Cochichando", "Blackberry Blossom/Apanhei-te Cavaquinho", "Pra Sempre", and "Desvairada".

The DVD is great with a particularly wonderul version of "Brejeiro" which I much prefer to the the studio version on the CD, "Blackberry Blossom/Apanhei-te Cavaquinho", and "Receita de Samba". I only wish the DVD was much much longer!

You will love this music.

5 out of 5 stars Creative cross-cultural musical conversations convey a variety of moods.......2006-12-22

Playing Time - 1:04:44 (CD) plus a 3-track DVD -- To call their duo album "New Words" is very indicative of the creative cross-cultural musical conversations that Mike Marshall and Hamilton de Holanda engage in during this generous hour-long set. There are some pieces that start with whispering sentiments ("Valsa em Si"), while others convey much more heated and fiery exchanges ("Desvairada"). With a healthy portion of five original pieces (Egypt, Ham & Mike, New Words, Pra Sempre, Valsa em Si), this album also illustrates the exceptional songwriting abilities of the pair.

Mike Marshall's innovative playing has been well-documented in the past with such bands or artists as Psychograss, Chris Thile, Edgar Meyer, Darol Anger, Jovino Santos Neto and Choro Famoso. At the 2004 Lunel, France Mandolin Festival, another artist-in-residence was 30-year-old Brazilian music master Hamilton de Holanda. The collaborative communication of Mike's "new words' with Ham's "novas palavras" illustrate a fluency that results in smoothly flowing, expressive music. Why, there's even some verbal scat to close "Sao Jorge."

Mike adeptly plays mandolin on all but three tracks where he picks mandocello or tenor guitar to convey different moods. Hamilton plays the 10-string bandolim except on three tracks where he picks Irish bouzouki. Without any low end or percussion in the mix, it's hard to say how radio-friendly the dialogue is, and that may discourage some DJs from spinning such a disc. However, in such an artist collaboration, the sparsity of sound actually provides much of its spark. It allows us to focus on the masters bantering and hear all the new words clearly. Take "Ham & Mike," for example, with the two voices having a rather sparkling discussion. It was perfect motivational background music for a busy day at work. At times, there are so many words (notes) being exchanged, that the conversations become a tad difficult to comprehend. The sheer extent of this body of music, that also includes a 3-track DVD recorded at the 2005 Savannah Music Festival, is somewhat mind-boggling. Being a good listener will allow you to appreciate how a standard fiddle tune like "Blackberry Blossom" can segue into Ernesto Nazareth's classic choro "Apanhei-te Cavaquinho." It's a small world now, and taking a trip from Appalachia to Brazil is not that hard to fathom. But then throw in stops along the way in Mike Marshall's "Egypt," Bela Fleck's "Big Country," or on the beautiful Azorean island of "Sao Jorge," and you'll appreciate both the worldy and wordy aspects of this album's healthy musical and innovative discourse.
