Swept

Editorial Reviews
From the Artist
The cover art for Waldog's Swept CD is a mosaic of photographs taken over a period of years. The finished art and the music contained on the CD have some related meaning. Basically, the end of ones life on this world, in this reality as we know it - and that other beings in this universe, far more advanced than ourselves, may understand the condition as little as we. (Wow!! I said that in on breath) As I finished this project my 98 year old Grandmother was nearing the end of her long, colorful life. She is the only person I have known who could say, "I watched the Wright Brothers fly and have flown on a Jumbo". I don't believe any of us living today will ever witness the changes this world has undergone as she has in this century. And so I dedicate this project to Sally Ann, the strongest person I have ever known. The so-called Mushroom Company Building is a real structure that once processed mushrooms though I don't believe this company ever processed Liberty Caps (not enough cool weather and too few cow pies!). This 100 foot tall building was blown over on it's side by explosives and filmed for the making of an unknown movie. If you look closely at the end of the building you can see reedbar tangled at it's foundation. Within this forty square acre demolished industrial park, South East of Los Angeles, many well-known movies have been filmed. Batman, Terminator and countless 'B' movies. It is a strange and dangerous place where PCB's and rabid animals play. I guess that's why you must sign your life away before entering this place. A guard must accompany you at all times to prevent people from stealing momentos and exploring places considered too dangerous. Waldog's first video was filmed here by Director John Berthold and cinematographer Steve Miles. This video 'Better Living' encapsulates what Waldog once was, 'NativeArtist' an all-electronic band. At some point we hope to revisit this place and the music that was written during those times. Produced and Engineered by Anthony Gordon.

Album Description
Waldog is a unique combination of hard-edged rock/industrial/pop, combining a straight-ahead guitar sound, sampled textures and vocal layers (translated directly from ancient dolphin palm scrolls found on the Island Of Crete). - That's the ticket!!. The bands live performance is a departure from the experimental nature of their first album Swept, bringing a more vocal/acoustic oriented version of their music to the stage.

To celebrate 10 years as the world's most popular musical, the cast of Les Misérables threw a phenomenal birthday party at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1995. A decade after Trevor Nunn directed its premiere at the Barbican Centre, and the subsequent move into what became a permanent home at the West End Palace Theatre, producer Cameron Macintosh felt the time had come for a little outing for "the miserables." Conductor David Charles Abell, having climbed out of the cluttered Palace pit, for one glorious night has the entire Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at his disposal and there are appearances from over 150 singers--birthday celebs from Les Mis stagings worldwide--who flocked to the grandiose venue. Hosts for the night are the 1995 London cast: Colm Wilkinson's Valjean has power and beauty in "Who Am I?" and "Bring Him Home," and Michael Ball is a charming Marius. Miss Saigon herself, Lea Salonga, gets the crowd-pleasing favorite "On My Own." The Albert Hall sounds filled to the brim with an appreciative audience that contributes to the festive atmosphere. The result is a real treat for fans and lovers of Boubil and Schönberg's greatest musical--this double CD is an obligatory item in every collection of Les Mis memorabilia. --Yngvil V.G.

5 out of 5 stars The best one I've heard.......2007-04-10

The first time I ever heard Les Miserables, it was on the Original Broadway cast CD. That CD had great vocals, but I didn't realize how much I was missing until I saw the show in NYC. What sets this recording apart from many others, including the OBC version, is the fact that, like the musical, it is through-sung. The complete symphonic recording is also this way, and has all of the music. Although this CD is lacking a few parts, most noticibly a shortend Lovely Ladies, missing a section with Javert, and Gavroche's death, when looked at in terms of the completeness and vocal abilities, this is the best.

Regarding the cast, Colm Wilkinson is THE Valjean. I love his vocals and the expression he puts into the character. Armstrong, as Therniere, is great, as is Jenny Galloway (Mme Therniere). They are both great actors and convey the comedic nature of the parts well. Hannah Chick, as young Cosette is splendid, especially in the fact that she sings right through the accidental gun shot noise in the middle of her song. Gavroche is priceless. The best I've ever heard. Ruthie Henshall does an absolutely brilliant Fantine, incredibly moving. Michael Ball (Marius) also has the supberb vocal ability and expression so prevolent in this cast.

Now, my two favorite characters, Javert and Eponine...Phillip Quast (Javert) is practically flawless. I personally don't like his interpretation of the prologue, but that's just me. Other than that, perfect. He more than makes up for that with his rendition of Stars, and his soliliquy in which he dies. You can visualize him going mad and jumping from the bridge just from his voice...amazing. Lea Salonga's vocal ability is unmatched. Her rendition of A Little Fall of Rain is tearjerking, and you can fell Eponine's pain and anguish throughout the entire CD. Anything with her in it is worth buying.

Finally, this CD has a recording of One Day More sung by the Valjeans from all over the world...amazing to hear.

To conclude, this is the best recording of Les Miserables you can buy.

5 out of 5 stars Great musical! Best singers!.......2007-03-13

This is my favorite collection because the performers are amazing. I don't like the exploding balloon during little Cosette's song, but the lead singers in this CD couldn't be any better.

5 out of 5 stars if you like les miz you can't go wrong.......2007-03-09

personally I am a sucker for a good musical...and music in general...This however is exceptional. I love it, it is one of my favorite versions of the musical, and I have been eyeing this cd for sometime now, i am so happy to finally have it in my collection. the quality is good, the music great, and the voices are fantastic!

4 out of 5 stars My 1st "Les Mis".......2006-10-27

It took some time for this musical to sink in for me but when I sat down to watch this broadcast the characters, plot, motivation(s) and all the nuances of minor characters fell into place -- it was exquisite. Granted some of the voices might not be up to par for more experienced ears and there are technical glitches here and there but this is my favorite. I still admire Hannah Chick for continuing with Castle on a Cloud in spite of the distraction -- that's an actor. I also find the extended applause at the end of some songs annoying but that doesn't negate the 99.99% pure magic previous.

My main beef is that discography is NOT IN ORDER on the second disc, and that works my nerves. I hate having to go in and edit the list.

What worries me NOW is that when it comes to the time to making a film of the musical it might suffer the same fate that Sweeny Todd seems to have looming in the wings. The Broadway musical (ST) was cast with actors, some happened to be stars. I hate it when something as fine as Sweeny Todd, or Les Miserables, would be filmed with stars (OK, JD is both but the director and leading lady have to go) and not actors.

Filming of Les Miserables -- in my life time please. Would it be asking to much to have someone do a remake of 'The Wiz' with spending a zillion dollars on junk? Ok, ok, ok, I'm going to go listen to Philip Quast who is simply amazing and blows my socks off.

5 out of 5 stars Best Les Miz Recording Out There.......2006-09-23

Now don't you disregard this because it says I'm a kid. I am very experienced in theatre and know exactly what I am talking about.
Colm Wilkinson(Jean Valjean): His enunciation is annoying and he tends to rasp and whispers. Great false but not my favorite Valjean.
Phillip Quast(Javert): Brilliant performance. This Aussie is the perfect Javert, his voice is clear and strong, wrapped in emotion.
Ruthie Henshall(Fantine): In my opinion, the best in the entire cast. Her throaty, crystal voice is absolutely exquisite. My favorite singer. That reviewer who said she has an awful voice seriously needs help! She is breathtaking!
Michael Ball(Marius): What can I say? Wonderful as always. Fantastic actor and very powerful singer. I get chills hearing "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables".
Judy Kuhn(Cosette): Nice voice, I do like her better as Pocahontas or Florence (Chess) though. Her accent is extremely blatant. All in all, Rebecca Caine should have been cast but Judy Kuhn is still very good.
Lea Salonga(Eponine): Wow. That's all I can say. She took my breath away as Kim in Miss Saigon and now in Les Miz, she impresses me once again. A magical rendition of "On My Own" and moves me to tears everytime I listen to her death scene with Michael Ball, "A Little Fall of Rain".
Alun Armstrong and Jenny Galloway(M. and Mme. Thenardier): Hysterical performances by both! Such talents! Jenny Galloway is returning for the Broadway revival in November, too.
Michael Maguire(Enjolras): Annoying accent again. Can't they all just sound English? Still, wonderful voice and great delivery. Very satisfying.
Over all, I highly recommend this recording. It is the best I have heard so far. The Original Broadway one was horrid and the London was okay. But this one is thrilling and moving. Les Miz at its best.

With all the attention Alanis Morissette's career has garnered, it's startling to think that on the release of her third studio CD she has yet to see her 28th birthday. Under Rug Swept finds Morissette in the producer's role, a position she seems more comfortable with at this stage than songwriter. The opener, "21 Things I Want in a Lover," finds Morissette ticking off her likes and dislikes before an attention-grabbing explosion of crunching guitar chords and a scratchy hip-hop beat. Swept's emotional flow is navigated by Morissette's vocal queues: her lower register accompanies confrontation and self-proclamation ("Narcissus"), the higher intimates vulnerability and reflection ("Utopia"). Every tone is enlivened by well-blended electronic and acoustic elements. The snag is that, as with her previous two albums, Under Rug Swept is marred by unabridged stream-of-consciousness lyrics. Her awkward syntax and distorted phrasing disorients music that's melodious and compelling. She remains acutely self-obsessed, delivering rants aimed at men who are fatally flawed and, naturally, irresistibly devastating. For now, her greatest strength as a musician lies in her ear for a powerful melody. Lyrically, she'd be better off keeping her contorted prose In Closet Locked. --Beth Massa

5 out of 5 stars Soul Music.......2007-04-23

I had until very recently lost track of Alanis Morissette (and pop/rock in general) since her first three albums and would ordinarily see no point in adding my own review of a several-year-old album to the hundreds (412 at the moment) that have already been posted on this site, but having rediscovered how much I liked her music -- Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie and Under Rug Swept in particular -- I felt like writing a word or two.

My attention was initially caught by Beth Massa's (professional reviewer) comment:
"The snag is that, as with her previous two albums, Under Rug Swept is marred by unabridged stream-of-consciousness lyrics. Lyrically, she'd be better off keeping her contorted prose In Closet Locked"

This, I think, completely misses what is for me the core appeal of the best music on her first three albums: her raw honesty. An honesty which more often than not cuts both ways. I, obviously, have never had an interview with Alanis Morissette, but my feeling is that her "stream-of-consciousness lyrics", or blank verse if you like, is nothing more than her communicating how she thinks and feels about an event or issue in the way most natural to her, and if her chosen words and phrasing happen to be displeasing to the style police why should she or anyone else give a tinker's damn? Real honesty is rare enough in itself. Intelligent, thoughtful, honesty is practically an endangered species in popular culture. It seems to me that rewriting blank verse that is honest and powerful (and a perfect match for the music in my opinion) into some sort of equivalent of iambic pentameter would be an ugly and insane triumph of form over substance. And I will also add that she doesn't seem to be any more "self-obsessed" than anyone else I know. How can anyone write a song about personal pain or anger without sounding self-obsessed anyway? That fact that there may be bigger things going on in the wide world can give us some perspective but it won't make the pain go away. Kurt Vonnegut once said something to the effect that all real literature was about the same thing: Being a human being is a bummer. This is vintage Vonnegut but the point is that the most meaningful art is about the pain, and confusion, and confounded fallibility of being human. The best of Alanis Moressette's music (which includes most of the songs on this album) is certainly of this type. What some have refered to as "soul music". I will choose it over "style" music any day of the week.

As evidenced by her first three albums Alanis Morissette is one of the best alternative pop/rock musicians out there both musically and lyrically. Jagged Little Pill was a great album. Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, and Under Rug Swept are outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars For those who loved Jagged Little Pill, may we suggest Under Rug Swept?.......2006-10-29

This release is kind of like Jagged Little Pill with a slightly older and much wiser Alanis at the creative front. Under Rug Swept marks her first self-produced effort and the result is one of the best CD's Morissette has released to date. Like JLP, Under Rug Swept offers a variety of emotions throughout and each song seems to follow easily into the next, almost as if Morissette is writing about her continuing metaphysical journey filled with happiness and heartaches of love and life. There isn't a bad song on this CD with memorable hooks and melodies. Lyrically, Morissette continues to write from her depths with feelings of deep reflection, overwhelming loss, and spiritual transformation. And like JLP, you'll finish listening to this collection feeling like Morissette just wrote a personal chapter of your own life.

4 out of 5 stars Solitude..........2006-10-26

This is, probably, the most relatable Alanis' album for me. Maybe, because by the time I picked up this record, I was going through a rough time, so there's sort of a connection going on here.

Why is "Under Rug Swept" the most relatable for me? Well, although I'm a huge fan of JLP and SFIJ, I find JLP "too angry" and SFIJ "too experimental and hard to sing-a-long to". But this album, I think, combines the wordy lyrics on SFIJ and the catchiness on JLP.

The album opens with 21 Things I Want In a Lover, filled with roaring guitar riffs and superb lyrics, it's truly a standout track.

Narcissus, although not exactly my favorite, the lyrics are, again, intelligent and 'into the point'. The sound is quite similar to the previous track, but less agressive.

The hit single, Hands Clean, which by far is one of (if not the most) Alanis' recognisable tracks. The lyrics are superb, the tune is incredibly catchy, no wonder it was a huge hit.

Flinch, is the longest track on the record, offers self-reflection and solitude through its lyrics and the music blends well with Alanis' stunning voice.

Finally, the gems have come. So Unsexy, with its hooky beat and relatable lyrics, is definitely my favorite. A feeling we can deeply relate to, feeling worse/less/inferior than someone else..I just love this song.
Meanwhile, Precious Illusions, is one of Alanis' finest tracks. I really love the lyrics, and the grief it offers ('These precious illusions in my head/Did not let me down when I was defenseless/And parting with them is like parting with my childhood best friend').

The stunning ballad, That Particular Time, is simply an amazing. A song about the fall of a relationship, it's just lovely.

A Man and Nothing in Return experiment with electronic sounds, reminiscent of SFIJ. Lyrically, A Man talks about homosexuality (I guess, because it's kind of hard to understand what the song is -really- about) and Nothing in Return talks about sincere love, giving without wanting to be given back, such a lovely track.

Back to the rock, Surrendering is another catchy track, not a standout unfortunately, but it's still a pleasure to listen to.

The final track, Utopia, closes the album beautifully with dreamy guitar sounds and beautiful lyrics, it really gives you comfort, it's one of the songs that evoke images in your head. Simply stunning.

All that being said, Under Rug Swept is highly recommended to Alanis' fans AND to those going through a rough time..it's a reflective, relatable, emotional and contemplative record.

5 out of 5 stars ... And I know what 5 stars mean !.......2006-08-28

Among all kind of reviews, I've always seen the song by song reviews as the most helpful ones. Im reviewing here an album that I heard more than 150 times, so I know what Im tellin here.

NB : I am NOT a jagged-little-pill fan.

1) 21 Things I want in a lover :
A nice opening, with nice lyrics. And lyrics in this album are among the best in history. A rare wisedom. The song is more heavy in guitars, but fairly short. It is not the one that made me fall in love with the album. 7/10

2) Narcisous :
Now here Alanis is talking to a spoiled boy she s in love with. Slightly less electric than the previous one, and less pleasing on the first time u listen to it. A little satiric, but very nice. Once again the lyrics are great. 8/10

3) Hands clean :
It s where the words "Under rug swept" were taken from. Easy song and very pleasing on the first time u listen to. Very appealing. Much more acoustic than the two previous ones. I got the album for that song. And I never regretted it. U can see she s talking about the same guy. The lyrics in this album are a whole story. 8.5/10

4) Flinch :
A 5-minutes acoustic song that s so beautiful. Less complaining and much more searching for the "guy" of the album. When u listen to album plenty of times (like 5, not 150), this one stays in ur mind. 8.5/10

5) So Unsexy :
"I can feel so unsexy for someone so beautiful". The album is gaining beat again. A song to offer to the love of ur life when u feel "Thirteen again, am I thirteen for good ?". Alanis is a showing to be more a wise woman in the album. That s why Im sure she s no more selling. 8.5/10

6) Precious illusions :
Another single (after hands clean), which means the song is catchy ! I love these comparaisons she do "You'll rescue me right, in the exact same way they never did ?" Upbeat and more electric :) 8.5/10

AND HERE STARTS THE FABOULOUS PART :

7) That particular time :
A tale that describes the changes of a relation in 3 months before it s ended. The best Alanis Ballad. Wonderful lyrics and music. 4 great minutes. It s not the best song when u first listen to the album, but surely will be one of your favorites if u listen to the music from the "ears in your heart". The bridge in the song is one of my ever favorite ! 10/10

8) A Man :
The album is getting way Better ! U ll like this song from the first time u ll listen to it. Great vocals, with a heavy-rock parts, yet not hard on ears at all. Here she trys to understand that selfish-narcisous guy. And she does it well, wearing his skin for once in this album. I can give it more than 10 so... 10/10

9) You owe me nothing in return :
Such a soft song. Water like 5 minutes song. The lyrics are SO powerful, tender. It s the true concept of loving in a song. My ever-favorite Alanis song. I let u discover it. 10/10

10) Surrendering :
To end the story of this relation, she chooses it face 2 face, yet with a tendreness. I recommend the lyrics (as i will for the last song). The music in this song is distinctive and catchy. 10/10

11) Utopia :
Used to be my favorite in the beginning. I ll let u discover why on ur own. 10/10

So such a wise album might take a couple of times to get to u. Anyway, I strongly recomment reading the lyrics while listening to the songs. If u like catchy and easy albums such as her "Jagged Little Pill", well run away !

In the end I wish to do some recommendations, taken from the spirit of this album :
Verspertine - Bjork (experimental has never been so wise)
Lara Fabian - Lara Fabian (remember this name, her songs CANNOT be performed BUT by herself)
Boys for Pele - Tori Amos (Rage + coldes pianos give such a wonderful way to throw away ur inside fires)

2 out of 5 stars well I gave it a chance.......2006-07-28

under rug swept was given positive feedback upon it's release and I was enjoying the song hands clean so I decided to check out the rest of the CD. Although alanis is a talented singer and songwriter I just wasn't feeling this CD although I give it to her for trying to be more musically diverse. It sounded too much like sugary pop to me I couldn't get into the rest of it.

5 out of 5 stars Great voice- You Must have this.........2007-07-24

Any true baby boomer or even todays music lovers should have this. Linda Scott sings her heart out on this album and hearing a lot of her songs took me back to the good old days.

5 out of 5 stars Starlight......Starbright!.......2007-06-23

Joyful! This is a star studded collection guaranteed to take you down memory lane almost hand in hand with Linda. Her intimate song stylings could even make standards and ballads seem like golden oldies, for she is vivacious, sparkling and exuberant! You may relive first love like it's a walk in the park. All of these songs about stars seem a metaphor for the singer...a star in her own right. In this collection are ten song titles about "stars" and even some moonbeams thrown in too. There are 8 songs in a row about stars. It's a rare and impeccable CD!

5 out of 5 stars Forgotten singers.......2007-05-14

This is a great album by a cute little gal with a big voice. Her songs were popular when I was a young man out of high school and it's great to relive them.

5 out of 5 stars Linda Scott album.......2007-03-14

Wow, really neat sounds. I loved the hits as well as the other songs on the CD. If you love the girl sounds of the 50's and 60's, you'll love this album! I recommend it highly!

5 out of 5 stars Linda Scott: Star Vocalist.......2007-01-13

Linda Scott was unfortunately an underrated talent by the media. She had a great vocal instrument and she knew how to utilize it to its fullest capacity. Her bright sparkling voice has an instant appeal. She knew how to phrase the lyric and deliver the melody in stunning fashion. She had many hits including the million seller, "I Told Every Little Star" which was recently featured in David Lynch's film, "Mulholland Drive". She was originally signed to a recording contract by the Winnipeg record mogul, Neil Galligan, who produced all the songs on this release. I treasure the fact that a local personality was responsible for bringing this great talent to a wider audience. I always felt that she should have had a broader following like Petula Clark. The arrival of The Beatles really put a damper on the American Pop Rock Ballad Singer. Woman singers like Lesley Gore, Connie Francis, Connie Stevens et al went into a sharp decline and had to find other venues for their talent. The British invasion had their pop rock ballad singer equivalents like Tom Jones, Englebert Humperdinck, Petula Clark and Dusty Springfield but their American counterparts like Gene Pitney, Bobby Vee, Ricky Nelson, Dionne Warwick and many others were relagated to the backburner. But now here is Linda Scott once more sounding great in a state-of-the-art compact disc. Eric Records deserves our deepest gratitude and highest praise for this superlative release. Perhaps, they might consider releasing more or all of her recordings as she never made a bad record. An artist of Linda Scott's calibre deserves to have her releases in public domain once more. I am certain her great song stylings will be appreciated by many old and new fans alike. It's wonderful that these songs are available again by this great singer. Linda Scott's time has finally come again!

4 out of 5 stars 1984 studio album.......2005-02-10

Diana Ross' recording career had hit the rocks in 1983 with the dismal sales of what is still easily her worst ever studio project, Ross (1983). Prior to Ross (1983) Ross had recorded the dreary, mish-mash Silk Electric (1982) which though successful commercially (becoming a Gold seller) contained none of the fire and soulful edge that had made so many of her Motown records so magical.

That changed in 1984 when Ross returned with what was at the time her best album yet for RCA Records. The project, titled Swept Away (1984),was perharps more successful in that Ross didn't try so hard to escape and shake off the style that had made her famous as she blatantly did on the experimental albums Silk Electric (1982) and Ross (1983). There were indeed some diverse experiments on Ross' part on Swept Away but no musical style was over-done and over-all Ross carries the whole Swept Away album off with ease, style and finesse.

Swept Aways' first single would be one of her all-time great ballads Missing You. That year, tragedy struck when the genius soul superstar Marvin Gaye was shot dead by his estranged father following a heated argument between the two. Written by the great Lionel Richie, Missing You was a moving and powerful tribute to the late legend who Ross had recorded a succesful and now classic album of love duets with in 1973 (see separate review for the Diana And Marvin album). Ross' emotions are evidently stirred up as she sings those strongly emotive lyrics and she sounds stunning as the track builds up to its dazzling crescendo.

Missing You flew straight into the U.S Top 10 charts and perharps was so successful in that it reflected her glorious Motown past. Missing You is indeed a classic Diana Ross ballad though oddly enough the song completely bombed in the U.K despite several re-promotions and a moving video that featured footage of Ross on stage with Marvin Gaye as well as other footage of the late Florence Ballad (founder of The Supremes who was fired from the group in 1967 and tragically died a penniless alcoholic in 1976 at the age of 32), Paul Williams of The Temptations (who shot himself in the head after having been distraught over poor finances and ill health) and a still of Ross' mother Ernestine who had died that year of cancer. Ross' performance on Missing You really gets to you and this was quite possibly her greatest recording for RCA Records.

The exotic, Caribean feel on the fun, bouncy Touch By Touch, features a vibrant, refreshing and even a little angelic (she was 39 at the time of recording this project) performance from Ross. This atmospheric, happy go-lucky number was lifted as a single where it surprisingly struggled into the lower reaches of the U.K Top 50 (but enjoyed some success in some parts of Europe).

Ross delivers a riveting vocal performance on her impeccable updating of the old Fontella bass classic Rescue Me. More routine and familiar were the smooth, lush arrangements on the yearning ballad It's Your Move which Ross still carries off with a lot of spark therefore deeming it compelling.

One of the more diverting experiments came with the stormy, atmospheric title track, Swept Away. This powerful number is complimented by a firm, razor-sharp performance from Ross who seamlessly surfboards along the tidal wave of musical arrangements that contains echoey, crashing sound effects at the exalting bridge of the song. Swept Away quickly raced into the American Top 20 charts, stopping at No.19.

Bernard Edwards, one half of the famous 70's disco group Chic, and who had co-produced the riotously funky masterpiece diana (1980) album (a landmark in Ross' career) wrote Telephone for the Swept Away project which was belatedly released as an American single in 1985 (though got nowhere!). This soft-funk number, complete with swirling, atmospheric arrangements and a highly effective breathy, seamless performance from Ross, had the potential to have been a reasonably sized hit had it been promoted far better than it actually ever was.

Ross takes a hesitant step into the growing electro-pop market on the startling Nobody Makes Me Crazy Like You Do. This was an interesting, if not entirley succesful experiment that hit the times well (though inevitably sounds dated now years later).

Ross' duets with the likes of Marvin Gaye and Lionel Richie had proved phenomenal and her gorgeous duet with Latin singer Julio Igelias was no exception. The mesmerising All Of You featured two charismatic and divinely sensual performances from Ross and Igslias who sound perfectly compatable when captured together on record. Rumours circulated around at the time that Ross and Igelias were romantically involved but this was nothing but fabrication on the medias' part. Ross and Igelias enjoyed a close friendship at a point and following the loss of her mother a distraught Ross took herself and her three children to stay with Igelias at his home at Christmas in 1984. Their timeless duet All Of You was another U.S Top 20 smash hit whilst faltering within the lower reaches of the U.K Top 50.

The almost ghastly We Are The Children Of The World is the albums only real throw-away track but one of the ultimate highlights is Ross' soaring renedition of Bob Dylans Forever Young. Ross enhances her delicate voice to startling effect on Forever Young delivering a mesmerising, crystal-clear and strong performance.

Swept Away was largely produced by Ross herself with some other contributions from Daryl Hall on that startling title track and Arthur Baker. Swept Away (1984) quickly restored her selling power in the U.S after the low sales for Ross (1983). Swept Away was rapidly certified Gold by the RIAA. In the U.K the album climbed to a moderate No.40 which wasn't bad considering the project hadn't yielded any major hit.

Overall Swept Away is a pleasing effort from the great soul diva and an essential album for Ross fans.

(However what is slightly laughable was the albums black and white cover featuring Ross wearing heavy, gothic-like make-up and sporting a toilet-brush spiked hairdo which was described by one critic for People magazine as Ross looking like "one of those West German postpunkers who do their hair with crazy glue". It was certainly a far cry from that glamorous, elegant lady we all bow down to on stage. It was in the ealy 80's that Ross remarkably went through various manifestations of her own dress sense.)

5 out of 5 stars Diana's last great album.......2004-03-03

I'm buying this CD to replace the LP I bought way back in 1984! I love this album, every track is worth a listen.

"Missing You", the tribute to Marvin Gaye, is the most recognizable track, and I think it hit #1 on the R&B chart. "Swept Away" is upbeat and danceable, you can hear the influence of Darryl Hall. I also really enjoyed "Telephone", it's rather funky. "Forever Young", a torch song ballad, is a nice end to the album.

Wow, this CD brings back memories. I agree with the other reviewer who said this was Diana's last great album. As a lifelong fan of Diana Ross, I readily admit it.

3 out of 5 stars Swept Away About it!.......2003-09-30

The hit title track, makes all the album worth buy in it!, it's a more extended version than the one now included in the only available Greatest Hits RCA Years!. The First Track "Missing You", is a great melancolic ballad, "Touch By Touch" sounds a little to funny to me, not the diva that we are used to; "Rescue Me", is a cover of the Fontella Bass version, is ok, not great, "It's Your Move", is one of the best track of the album, is a kinda sexy track, it doesn't fall in the title of funny sounding song like the above "Touch by..", "Swept Away" well Daryl Hall had it with this song, why it didn't became a top 10 hit, that's a mystery, maybe cuz Radio airplay was mad with Diana parting ways with Motown?, the chorus line that states "No It doesn't matter cuz nothing last forever" it's a timeless state of independence, "Telephone" well to slow for being a song produce by Bernard Edwars(of Chic and one part of the success of "diana"), it's sounds like a filler, and the lyrics only talks about "if you need someone call it on the telephone"? whassup with that?, "Nobody Makes Me Crazy Like You Do" well this track supposed to be danceable, it's sounds kind of robotic, it's not boring but not a classic, "All Of You", song with Julio Iglesias father of course of Enrique!, this song is a total AC classic of the early eighties, although it was an [imitation] of "Endless Love" it didn't achieve the success that EL achieve, the song is produced by Richard Perry(Pointer Sisters)and the lyrics are ok, of course they talk about love, Julio Iglesias voice is better than his son, "We are the children of the world", it's an uplifting song wich for my point of view was a predescesor of "We Are The World" haha, nice for kids parties!?, "Forever Young" deep lyrics written by the one and only Bob Dylan, this should have been a great AC release but I guess Diana didn't want it, in conclution, "Swept Away", pick the pieces up where "Ross" 1983 left all, although it didn't make a great stament in music like "diana" in 1980 did, "Swept Away" had enough energy to be certified "Gold", and consider the last commercial success in the USA for Miss Ross. Both the album should be consider halp Upbeat, half Ballads, a great convination that some divas of today don't seem to capture.

4 out of 5 stars Swept Away nothing last forever.......2003-03-25

Swept Away was Diana's last successful commercial release in the U.S. Swept Away was the beginning of the end of Diana's reign as the boss. All of You with Julio Iglesias was a beautiful ballard that fell short of the success of Endless Love. Swept Away was a powerful track that demonstrated that Ross could keep up with the other divas of the era like Chaka Khan, Evelyn King and Donna Summers. Diana's vocal performance was both passive and powerful and showed sex appeal and strength. Missing You was Ross' last hit and number 1 R&B ballad yet it struggled to maintain the number ten spot on the pop charts a sign that this was the beginning of the end. Other noticeble tracks include Telephone and Touch by Touch. Definitely the last album that was a complete masterpiece by Ross.

5 out of 5 stars Great 80's music!.......2003-03-16

I enjoyed her "My Old Piano", "I'm Coming Out", "Mirror Mirror" stuff. If that is the style of Diana you want to hear, then you will really enjoy this CD."Swept Away" starts it off with a mood that makes you want to move, then "It's your move" makes you nod your head. "Telephone" makes you want to slow dance and "Missing You" is one of those you lip sink to when you are driving and then you look around to see if anyone saw you. I wish this CD was easier to find. The used price is out of line.

4 out of 5 stars This got "Swept Away" once but not this time on CD.......2007-06-28

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

To most, Steve Hunter is in the shadows. If you saw him down the street, he could be the new neighbor, the local deliveryman, or an executive at a Fortune 500 company. In the rock and roll world, Hunter is never in a shadow. He is a well-known entity for his resume and compatibility with any level of musician.

He's played with Mitch Ryder, Alice Cooper, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, and Jack Bruce. That doesn't even scratch the surface of his time in the studio as a session player.

In 1977, Hunter released a solo record "Swept Away" with some of the most diverse rock and roll heard during that year and artistically impressive cover versions of some extraordinary tunes.

The opening track is his tremendous rendition of the Byrds tune "Eight Miles High." Flavored here as an instrumental the first words are always "This is fabulous. Who is this guy."

Hunter puts the blues hat on for the traditional "Goin Down" and here is an example of his superlative ability. It is one thing to have far reaching musical tastes and to record the proper renditions, but Hunter has every last detail down to a science. The sound of the guitar is in perfect harmony with the lineage of the song.

"Sail On Sailor" is the song the Beach Boys recorded and issued the definitive version. Hunter composed a four and one half minute gem of a cover tune resulting in pure beauty.

"Jasper St. Viaduct Citar Rag" sounds as if Jorma Kaukonen from the Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna is dictating the structure of the tune. The way Hunter makes every note resonate and have meaning further solidifies this release as a hidden treasure. This is one of his own compositions.

"Deep Blue" another Hunter penned song has the earmarks of a George Harrison solo tune. Hunter puts the listener in a relaxed mode as the tenth and final selection of the album comes our way.

If the drums appear to enhance the material, you can thank Steve for selecting Jim Gordon. A few of his credits include the Beach Boys, Monkees, John Lennon, Traffic, Eric Clapton, and George Harrison all before 1974!!

4 out of 5 stars OBSCURE CLASSIC RE-ISSUED.......2007-01-12

If you like blues-based guitarists, you are probably already familiar with the guy who was known as one of the most influential players of the '70s. He worked with Jack Bruce and Mitch Ryder before becoming famous for his "Intro" on Lou Reed's live Rock-n-Roll Animal album. The twin lead guitars of Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner brought tasteful, fluid melody and scorchingly soaring solos to Reed's otherwise spartan tunes. Lou Reed Live was also taken from the same concert as Rock-n-Roll Animal and has the same energy and inspired performances by the same band that later went on to tour and record with Alice Cooper in the mid to late '70s. If you like the lead guitar from Aerosmith's Train Kept-a-Rollin from the Get Your Wings album, that is Steve Hunter playing in an un-credited performance. Steve Hunter plays brilliantly but he's not the kind of guy who jumps around the stage. He's all about the music and this album, Swept Away was his first solo effort. Its mostly electric with Steve's beautifully crafted solos soaring above the solid rhythm section of Jim Gordon on drums, Jim Maelen on percussion, Prakash John on bass and Josef Chirowski and Bob Ezrin contributing on keyboards The title tune has a jazzy feel with sort of a Brazilian bossa nova rhythm. Eight Miles High is an instrumental version of the Byrds' hit with a rocking beat and Steve wailing with his tasteful phrasing and beautiful tone. Check out a tune called Sea Sonata. Steve builds the composition with the prettiest leads that culminate in a brilliant solo at the end that'll put chills on your spine. His version of the Beach Boys" Sail on Sailor" is the best version you'll ever hear of that song...his blues playing embellishes that number so tastefully and the only vocals are at the chorus. Its perfectly executed. Deep Blue is an artfully atmospheric piece and Rubber Man has a funky feel.
Eldorado Street is also a favorite of mine. What more can I say? I bought this album on vinyl back in '77 and its pretty worn out. I was delighted to find it available on cd.

5 out of 5 stars Whirligig.......2006-05-24

Yesirree, this one's a keeper. Mostly instrumental (two vocal tracks, actually), it's quite eclectic and (almost) everything works. "Goin' Down" and "Sea Sonata" are marred only slightly by Mr. Hunter's somewhat wobbly vocals. He tries so hard to sound authentically country/blues on the former that it sounds like satire - - which for all I can tell, it is. Hunter's pounding take on "Eight Miles High" owes less to the Byrds than it does to, say, contemporary Deep Purple and he makes it his own, all right - - heck, the guy had played with everyone from Alice Cooper to Lou Reed by this time and he was headed for, among others, Peter Gabriel. Ditto for "Sail On, Sailor"; it's as atmospheric a tribute as you could hope for, and has a swagger that the original only hinted at. (And omitting the word "sailor" from the refrain is sort of a musical nudge-wink.) The brief quote from "My Favorute Things" in "Rubber Man" is cute, too. Other standouts: the wide-screen, cinematic "Eldorado Street", the airy title track and the beautiful closer, "Deep Blue". Yes, the titles are evocative - - and the music lives right up to them. Bob Ezrin's beefy production doesn't hurt, either.

5 out of 5 stars Long Overdue Diamond in the Rough.......2005-04-14

I have a badly worn vinyl copy of this album. I pulled it out a year or so ago and transferred it to digital, thinking I would never see it on CD. Miracles never cease.

This was an album I liked the first time I heard it in 1977. The playing is smooth and the music is geniunely interesting. Hunter is probably a better guitar player than he is a singer, but even the singing isn't bad on this album.

Check out the high energy of Eight Miles High, the lead tune. Spectacular! What was side 2 of the vinyl album begins with Jasper St. Viaduct Guitar Rag. It is followed by a great version of Sail on Sailor. The rest of side 2 rolls along effortlessly, stitched together with artistic transitions and great playing.

It's amazing to see what some of the smaller labels are reissuing these days. This is a diamond in the rough. Order it today.

5 out of 5 stars Finally on CD.......2004-06-16

Steve Hunter is a master rock and blues guitarist. I bought this vinyl album back in 1975. It has always been one of my favorites. This CD includes many diverse musical styles and it's all high quality. The audio production throughout is wide open and the ambiance on the song, Swept Away, is rich. If you appreciate fine guitar playing - get this CD.

From the first track "Onward from Here" to the last, "Saturday" this is one fine recording. I will now, after hearing this, go and find her earlier recorded work. She plays very well and writes really good songs. Erica wrote all the tracks on this CD except for "Angeline" (by James McMurtry) and "Casey, Illinois" (by Bill Morrissey). So far I enjoy the track "Nowhere to Go" the most. She has a clear and soaring country-flavored voice. Erica Wheeler is a fine songwriter and a wonderful singer, go get this CD and you will not be disappointed.

Check out Onward from Here, the story of Jack's Tavern, the lyrics and music of Angels and the quiet pleasure of Solace of a Prayer. Swept Away stands the test of time. Great songs, including the wonderful ballad 'All of You'. So glad this LP was put on a CD.

4 out of 5 stars REISSUED, BUT NOT REMASTERED.......2005-04-02

I have the original RCA release of this CD (long out of print but I bought a used one on ebay a few years ago).

As soon as I saw that it was being re-issued, I thought finally a remasterd version would sound so much better. While EMI may have done a little bit of digital remastering I doubt they used the original master tapes because this reissue only sounds slightly better than the old RCA version. The sound level is still very low, the highs are harsh and the bass is very weak.

Even the CD itself still has a date on it of 1984, and the CD is still made the way they were in the early days - no silkscreen top coat, just plain laquer (CD's are more susceptable to scratching this way).

The song Swept Away is one of my favorites by Ross and of that style of dance music from the early 80's. I guess I'll just have to wait to see if EMI or RCA or someone else will ever remaster from the original tapes this CD or at least the album version of Swept Away.

this is another DIANA ROSS rca product and one of her best along with the RED HOT AND BLUES CD.on this outing DIANA leaves most of the producing to other people which in this case makes a better album. Not only does this lp feature classic Ross hits such as MISSING YOU,SWEPT AWAY, and the r@b hitTELEPHONE but the album eases along with some great lp cuts and strong vocals by ross such as NOBODY DRIVES ME CRAZY LIKE YOU,ITS YOUR MOVE,FOREVER YOUNG and the uk hit TOUCH BY TOUCH.only one down fall is the inclusion of WE ARE THE CHILDREN OF THE WORLD,instead of the lost track FIGHT FOR IT.This track would have made the lp more urban.Ross also does a good job on a cover RESCUE ME,and after hearing it you forget who originally sang it.The CHILDREN OF THE WORLD is a bit weak and rather schmaltzy.Diana has never been either.9 out 10 tracks are ross classics.one of her best.check out RED HOT AND BLUE cd.

Volume 10 in RPM's Mood Mosaic series, exploring the non traditional outlets for cool sounds of the '60s and '70s. Gypsy Creams & Ginger Nuts pays homage to the record label spawned from Associated Rediffusion TV. A good many young arrangers and session players were cutting their teeth on these sessions, further contributing cracking original tunes. Names that have become legend in loungecore circles such as Harry Stoneham, Pete Moore, Alan Moorhouse and Tony Osborne. Tracks from these albums (and there were many), 187 between 1968 and 1974) have found their way onto various compilations, and vinyl singles for club play down the years. This is the first album compilation however solely focusing on the Rediffusion catalogue and story. With a sleeve essay by the people behind the Licorice Soul label and the excellent Vinyl Vulture web site (recently responsible for the lauded "Working Man's Soul" compilation) Gypsy Creams and Ginger Nuts is a tasty package indeed. 2 out of 5 stars Only as good as the movie.......2006-02-25

As the movie is to the Wertmüller original, so this soundtrack's
music pales compared to the beauty of Piccioni's score.
Get the soundtrack of the original film, if you can find it.
This is just typical Hollywood muzak.

    5 out of 5 stars Lush and Emotional...A Beauty of a Soundtrack!.......2003-01-03

Michel Colombier's soundtrack to the Guy Ritchie/Madonna collaboration "Swept Away" is absolutely astonishing. Ranging from perky, Greek instruments on tracks like "The Greeks" and "The Gym" to lush and emotional reveries like "Togetherness" and the heartbreaking "Parted." Della Reese's "Come-On-A-My-House" is the only non-instrumental track, and it is simply divine. I have yet to see this film and am highly anticipating it's DVD release. Until then, buy this soundtrack. You won't be disappointed!
