About the Artist
Wyrmwood the Legacy (dubbed for a collection of short stories by Poppy Z. Brite entitled "Wormwood") is a female darkwave/industrial duo rapidly gaining popularity amidst San Antonio's underground scene. Musical influences such as Siouxsie & The Banshees and Dead Can Dance shining through in the songs, Wyrmwood masterfully crafts its own blend of spiritual darkwave, as poignant as it is dance-able. Having already shared the stage with such legends as the Mission U.K. and Sex Gang Children, Wyrmwood is sure to make bigger waves in the coming years, playing the music they love and believe in, in hopes that it touches someone out there.

Album Description
A fine fusion of "darkwave" and "goth," Wyrmwood's debut CD, "Strange Angels" is a compelling journey through pain, darkness and sorrow, arriving ultimately at spirituality and self-reflection. While the album's lyrical content started out quite dark and mystical in the early writing stages, it changed and evolved over time to reflect something the band felt was greater, the power of God over all things. Wyrmwood's goal is to fuse music with spiritual energy, for themselves as well as for their audience - posing situations and ideas in their music - but letting the listeners interpret the meaning and experience their own reactions to it. "Strange Angels" is an enhanced CD which - in addition to music - features photos of the band and a video for the newly released track, "Voices."

5 out of 5 stars Strangely Beautiful.......2007-04-15

This CD is one of the few I have downloaded into my Ipod complete. The music has a dream like quality, but what I really like is Laurie Andersons use of language, for example the idea of purchasing " high heeled feet" at a body shop amuses me.

4 out of 5 stars Wine lovers will enjoy this book........2007-03-13

A bit dry reading at first but stay with it. It becomes a quite interesting read for those interested in the history of wine.

5 out of 5 stars Strange Angels are Mowing My Lawn.......2006-10-04

I ran across a cd single of "BEAUTIFUL RED DRESS," at a resale shop across from where I live. It looked interesting and the name Laurie Anderson was vague to me and then it hit me; I remembered having a compilation of "alternative" music with Laurie Anderson's "'O' SUPERMAN" on it. So I bought it and immediately fell in love with the song. I replayed it several times;I just couldn't get enough. A few days later I bought the whole cd and from that moment on I was hooked. All of the tracks are catchy,well-crafted pop songs. My favorite tracks include The Day the Devil,Hansel and Gretel, the title track-Strange Angels, and I forget the titles of the other songs but they're all pop freindly tunes. After awhile, you even find yourself singing along with Laurie Anderson. This was a departure from her normally avantegarde work but still very accessibe and pleasant sounding.

5 out of 5 stars Don't buy this CD: buy two!.......2004-08-02

I can't add to the justifiably enthusiastic reviews above, as I agree with them. Anderson was never so approachable, lyric or beautiful as in this stunning recording. That does not mean she sold out and made a catchy little pop CD. These songs soar like strange angels. This is--by a substantial margin--my favorite Laurie Anderson recording. I wish she would do more work in this line, trusting her gorgeous voice to do what she proves it can do here.

But beware! This CD doesn't stand up to frequent play. The music will keep you coming back, but somehow the CD itself is fragile. Even though most songs play well, I need to replace my first copy. I just saw an article about the way CDs are more degradable than most people understand. This CD was cited as an example.

5 out of 5 stars A liquid voice backed with high-tech production.......2004-07-09

With her emphasis on words, some of Laurie Anderson's projects have occasionally seemed more like treatises than music -- not so here. This clutch of fascinating songs not only uses Anderson's breathy voice very well, but shows the expertise of the superb musicians with whom she collaborates, not to mention the innovative use of electronics for which she is also well known.

From the opening "Strange Angels," Anderson creates a mysteriously beautiful world -- sometimes quiet, sometimes noisier -- backed by a glistening instrumental and electronic palette. Often her voice will be electronically reprocessed, as in "Day the Devil," in which she becomes several different personas, including a cackling Satan. Other highlights are "Monkey's Paw" and "Ramon," but there is hardly a weak track on the disc, and many have such catchy melodies that you may be humming them for days.

The sound quality is terrific -- as someone else mentioned, this is a great recording with which to use headphones, and Anderson's haunting special effects come through with beautiful force and clarity.

Strange Angels is a whispered testament, leaning on one voice and acoustic guitar, with occasional splashes of piano, cello, and strings. The result is far removed from Hersh's work with Throwing Muses, which packed it in 1996 after a decade of struggle and eight albums of coarse, uneven beauty. Along with her husband and kids, Hersh has made an even cleaner break from the past, leaving Boston for the solitude of the California desert near Joshua Tree. True to her new home base, Strange sounds like an album of folk songs written and sung under the clear night sky. When sung to children, lullabies are meant to induce sleep. When sung by Kristin Hersh to adults, they have the opposite effect. No matter how sweet or hushed the sound of Strange Angels, these lullabies disturb more than they comfort, jarring you awake when you're about to doze off, akin to what Hersh calls "cold water coming for the warm water junkies," but it can be oddly moving, too. --Keith Moerer

5 out of 5 stars Sonic Eloquence.......2006-08-03

This has to be my favorite Kristin Hersh record. I love Throwing Muses and was happy to hear Kristin Hersh's solo efforts. This album doesn't disappoint. While some may prefer it to be rockier, there's something very comforting and cathartic in the gentle sweeps and waves of the songs. Is it for everyone? Probably not.

If you listen to PJ Harvey you'll understand the analogy that this is Kristin Hersh's "To Bring You My Love". If you don't listen to PJ Harvey, it's a very mellow/folky album, more conceptual.

There are some songs I like more than others. "Home", "Shake", and "Like You" are my current favorites, while "Some Catch Flies" if very hit or miss to me.

This is one of my all time favorite records. It's very fitting to very specific moods. Well worth the chance you'll be giving it.

3 out of 5 stars It's both strange and angelic........2004-07-20

I picked this album up because I'm a fan of "Throwing Muses", and I assumed her solo work would be something like that. Well, the similarities are there, but this is no "The Real Ramona". "Strange Angels" is pretty much an acoustic album, so it's not really alt-rock, as much as it is a folky singer/songwriter kind of thing. Overall it's good, just not great. Because it's only her singing and playing, many of the songs tend to sound the same, all good, just similar. I doubt this is her best release, but if you're a fan, especially of her voice and guitar work, you should love "Strange Angels".

5 out of 5 stars Steller!.......2004-02-26

Contrary to the first critic, Strange Angels is one of Kristin Hersh's finest works. Well, the cult of Kristin could debate this, but this one is my personal favorite. It's authentic, simple, and gorgeous. I've listened to this record religiously over the last couple years. It's nice warm blanket when faced with the pain of grief. 5 stars, no BS. Best tracks..."Heaven," "Shake," "Aching For You," "Rainy Gazeebo Tree," "Gut Pageant," and "Pale."

1 out of 5 stars Just terrible.......2003-04-30

What was I thinking? I heard a song from this CD about a year ago, wrote down the name and filed it for later. Finally made the purchase, and now I am stunned at how boooooooring it is!

5 out of 5 stars From One Strange Angel to Another.......2001-11-10

"Strange Angels" is some of the most beautiful musical work that I have ever experienced. I really liked Throwing Muses and when I heard they disbanded, and Kristin was going solo, I was a little apprehensive, but this work is so much more introspective and delicate. This album speaks to me because of the intoxicating melodies and manic depressive lyrics. Hersh may rival the McCartney/Lennon (writing) team for such beautiful lyrics!! This is my favorite CD for all of these reasons. This makes me want to be a songwriter. Thanks Kristin!

5 out of 5 stars Hands-down best Cure Tribute.......2004-07-10

I think The Cure is the best progressive rock band ever...talented, surprisingly and infinitley kick ass. However there have been some really bad Cure tributes. The best one's in order are This one, A Night Like... and 100 tears....This Cure tribute is the most varied and almost every song version on here is enjoyable. The cover's of The Walk, To The Sky, and All Cats are Grey are simpley awesome...A must get!

3 out of 5 stars Heavenly to the ears.......2004-04-18

This cd is quite good, definatly not the worst cure tribute out there. The tributes to "To the Sky" and "Burn" was nice, you don't always get these song choices on a tribute. Good luck to the creator of failure to communicate records. I will be looking forward to the new tributes that are coming...Joy Division, David Bowie and :) Nick Cave!

4 out of 5 stars Strange As Angels = Eclectic & Tasty.......2004-04-06

Lots of good songs on here, including stripped down covers by Voltaire and Hearts Fail . . . at least 3/4 of the rest of the songs are pretty good, too.

5 out of 5 stars "Strange" is good........2004-03-25

This CD isn't only the best Cure tribute out there, it is one of the best mixes of ANY tribute album I've eer heard. It covers every cool type of music you can think of. The Voltaire track is awesome. Then there's these tracks by Jupiter Blue and Egostatic that just rock so hard. Yes, a Cure tribute that ROCKS HARD. The the digipack artwork is a nice touch. A lot of time and effort went into this one, unlike Cleopatra'a "100 Tears." This CD hasn't left my stereo since I bought it. I totally recomend it.

1 out of 5 stars Edge of the deep green sea...........2004-03-12

This is one of the few Cure tribute albums that I didn't like. The album cover should have been a dead give away, the Robert Smith wannabe is staring at the sea wearing a black suit and "NIKE's". Yes... #$#@ing NIKE's!!! Onto the actual songs, I was rather let down. With 17 songs, you'd figure the law of probability would dictate a few tracks would be likeable. Perhaps there are two tracks at best I would recommend such as 'The Drowning Man', and 'The Figurehead'. If you are looking for a decent tribute album, I would recommend 'A Fictional Tribute', or 'A Night Like This' tribute.

Three years after the rather disappointing ?Soho Square?, Daniel Biro released his second CD ?The Comparative Anatomy of Angels?. The four pieces it comprises are among his finest work. With the exception of the two ?Strange Attractor? pieces, they all illustrate his distinct compositional style. Biro favors the use of multiple cycles (either melodic or harmonic) evolving on different time frames, which creates ever-changing combinations. In the title piece and ?Beba in White?, this technique is applied to voice and guitar. The first piece is a triptych for three female voices and programmed percussion. Each movement uses a short text on a particular angel (Mikael, Azrael and Gabriel). V?ronique Joly, Cathryn Robson, and Lucie Robson create fascinating interlaced lines. The second piece features acoustic (Simon Scardanelli) and electric guitars (Steve Swift and Patrick Tedd) playing a cycle of six chords in various ranges. Once again the result is a kaleidoscopic piece, this time (because of the instruments involved) reminiscent of the early work of the French group Philarmonie -- or even The League of Crafty Guitarists. After these two pieces, the two movements of ?Strange Attractor? bring a pause. They are two delicate improvisations on a Fender Rhodes electric piano (a rare solo feature for this instrument), a rehearsal of sorts before the longer exercise found on Biro?s next album Elegant Enigmas. The CD ends with the 22 minute ?With These Gloves You Will Enter Mirrors Like Water,? a gripping work based on a symmetrical sequence of ten chords, for string quartet, voice and synthesizer. Here the composer?s lyricism shines, thanks mostly to Joly?s sensual and frail interpretation of a text by poet Jean Cocteau. Without resorting to atonality, Biro managed to present strong, evocative, and yet very modern pieces. Strongly recommended.
