Beck brags here that he's "got two turntables and a microphone." He also has a sweeping aesthetic that sees no reason why musical allusions to hip-hop, the Beatles, James Brown, punk, Gram Parsons, cool jazz, and Dylan can't coexist in the same song. Throughout, he rap-sings with sincere irony--I bet he laughs at the sight of a jump-suited Elvis, then cries when the King starts to sing--and Odelay's rich collage of sound may very well prove a prediction of the future. If he ever finds the courage to can the loopy metaphors and just tell a story, he could take over the world. --David Cantwell

Beck is easily one of the most overrated musicans of the 90's, his music just dosen't do the job. His lyrics are interesting sometimes to say the least, but it's not hard to grab onto. Odelay though, has 7 good songs, so while it's no classic, I found it rather interesting. I don't love it either, but so far,it's not so bad.

The seven songs work because they are really cool, yet sound like musical, and have good melodies with some hilariously bizarre lyrics to go with it. And the music actually fits it, such as the song Derelict. The lyrics are as odd as the music. That's what Beck should do, not to break rules just to break them (to quote Janitor-X).

Sure, it's no classic, but at least six songs (1,2,4,5,8,10) are really good. The other, okay, it's not really worth mentioning, but I thought those songs were really cool. They aren't short, that's why ODelay earns a

Beck sounds basically like no one else. His melding of many different genres, usually at the same time, along with his warped songwriting, creates a totally unique and often brilliant sound. I mean, I doubt anyone else could write a song like, say, "Sissyneck" (or basically any song here, this is just an example). I mean, at its core, it's basically a country song, but it's set to a funk groove and also has surreal lyrics (another Beck staple) and weird noises thrown in. Even songs that don't really blend any genres, like "Devil's Haircut", still don't really sound like any artist out there. "Got a devil's haircut/in my mind", Beck sings as an off-kilter, distorted guitar melody grinds behind him. Other album standouts include "Hotwax", "The New Pollution" (especially the intentionally awkward transition at the beginning, and also where it's a cappella and quiet for a minute, and then this hideous guitar feedback comes in), "Where It's At", "Minus", and "High 5 (Rock the Catskills)", but I don't think there's a crappy song on this whole thing, or even just an OK one. Recommended for fans of all kinds of music (but it helps to be a little, er, "different"!)

This is the album that solidified Beck more so in the mainstream after his first hit single, Loser, on Mellow Gold. So far it's his most popular album, so if you're looking for some Beck after hearing a tune on the radio this is probably the one you want to go for.

My first Beck and the first time I heard him period. I bought it on a suggestion from relatives I can trust. Boy I am HAPPY!! Anyone just wants a taste of Beck this album has no set style but I am always tapping my foot or humming melodies. The lyrics of Zappa and musical capabilities of Mozart. Open your imagination and enjoy.

This album will never ever get old. The breakbeat drum loops make it impossible not to dance and the witty, psychadelic lyrics make you jealous of BECK's ability to write a song that says so much without saying anything at all.

      I love this CD (I haven't purchased the import, but I own the American version). Beck's got some really cool stuff on this album, and he doesn't stick to one particular style (the only I've heard of that's been able to pull that off successfully), but this is a great CD. If you don't know anything about Beck, check this one out before the others.

          It is undeniable that this album will appeal to almost anybody. The memorable blend of jazzy folk with pop and rock shines through every song in an exciting combination which will urge you to listen to it over and over - a simply marvellous album, utterly compelling
