Album Description
An enjoyable mix of alternative and acoustic folk music. These are 10 catchy songs that would be at home in a barroom or campfire sing-a-long.

Album Description
Raising Your Voice...Trying to Stop an Echo is the anticipated follow up to Hammock's debut, Kenotic, a record that All Music Guide described as ''in every way a contender for classic status in the Shoegazing genre.'' The duo's eighteen newest tracks will do little to change that cross-genre appeal. Raising Your Voice...Trying to Stop an Echo is characterized by the duo's hallmark: thick curtains of cascading electric guitars that merge into pure expressions of hope, stillness, joy and loss. Accompanied by strings, piano, ethereal vocals and an occasional undercurrent of percussion, these beautiful, layered guitar washes range from whisper-soft minimalism to moments of driving, slow-burn intensity. Simply put, Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson make music that is filled with human passion and emotion.

Music to kill yourself by!!.......2007-06-30
If slow bass and drum melody with over-processed guitar is your thing than you'll like this CD..This music I found was VERY depressing..These guys are talented and there are a couple of good songs on here but for the most part they all kind of blend together into this depressing melody that wants to go somewhere but never actually does..
Hammock does it again...and then some..........2007-01-03
Hammock's "Raising Your Voice... Trying to Stop an Echo" is another fine release from this wonderful band. Over 18 mesmorizing tracks, Hammock expands their sounds to their most sprawling limits on this CD, utilizing not only their signature delayed electric guitars, but also adding piano, strings, keyboards, field recordings, acoustic guitars, and vocals to convey a distinct sense of hope-tinged melancholy. The melodies on "Raising Your Voice... Trying to Stop an Echo" are as memorable as the other Hammock releases, and while the band shows a greater desire to explore with sounds and arrangements, the band shows remarkable restraint and patience with their songs. They allow each song to lead to its own logical conclusion, never forcing the mood or melody, ultimately leading to a very natural sounding record.
Fans of Hammock's previous work, Slowdive, Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Stars of the Lid, Brian Eno, etc will all find music that they will love on "Raising Your Voice... Trying to Stop an Echo". The perfect soundtrack for country drives, stargazing, watching the snow fall, or to simply relax to....
My Album of the year.......2007-01-03
Hammock can do no wrong. After their amazing debut release in "Kenotic", and their 4 track ep "Stranded Under Endless Sky", Hammock has released their 2nd full length album "Raising Your Voice... Trying to Stop an Echo".
This album is musical bliss from beginning to end.
Echo contains 18 tracks, which is a rarity in todays music biz routine, of 10 track releases.
Do yourself a MAJOR favor, and get this album, and if you love it as much as I do. Tell everyone you can.
let down of the year.......2006-12-15
while hammock's previous full-length, the inarguably brilliant "kenotic" did contain its fair share of filler tracks (the second half is rather unmemorable, but the flawless first half more than makes up for it), "raising your voice" is pretty much a bunch of rehashes (or maybe not, but it's all too forgetable to remember much of it) of the lesser kenetic tracks. that said, it makes decent music for falling asleep to, and the title track is easily the best "song" the duo has put forth yet.
Best of 2006: Hammock Does It Again.......2006-11-22
Hammock's 2006 release, "Raising Your Voice Trying to Stop an Echo", becomes another jewel in an impeccable string of albums and EPs they have released since their debut release, Kenotic.
Hammock continues to do what they do best: produce beautiful music for the soul that will take you in a trip of inner discovery. The follow up album of the Nashville-based duo continues to integrate thickly layered guitars in shoegaze fashion (think Slowdive), producing soundscapes much like they did in their previous works, in a very organic way.
"Raising Your Voice..." goes beyond the work the meditative/instrumental sound they've gotten us used to, bringing in the angelical voice of Christine Glass Byrd and the sound of piano, strings and occasional percussion to balance the work of Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson, resulting in eighteen tracks that will be just as appealing to fans of shoegaze and ambient as it can be to those who are into post-rock (Sigur Ros, anybody?) or plain and simple GOOD music.

Product Description
Beautiful, guitar-driven ambience from the deep American South: HammockÂ’s music, like the South itself, is desolate but hopeful, dramatic but sparse, and always overflowing with stories. Cut from the same cloth as the duoÂ’s acclaimed debut Kenotic, Stranded Under Endless Sky offers four new songs ranging from whisper-soft minimalism to moments of slow-burn intensity.

Hammock, Stranded Under Endless Sky..........2007-05-09
The music of Hammock is really unlike anything I've ever heard... Their music is so beautiful, that I can't wait for their next album...
Music that melts in your mouth..........2005-11-07
I first heard Hammock as they put out their "Kenotic" album. I was hypnotized from the first note. "Stranded Under Endless Sky" is no different, except in one respect: it's even better. Without any lyrics, this time around, the bulk of the album is centered around the atmospheres the instruments create, transporting you if you accidentally close your eyes and forget you are listening to music.
It is hard to balance so well so much power in a guitar with such subtle soundscapes. The four tracks in Hammock's "Stranded Under Endless Sky", with their blend of ambient and shoegazing, make you let go and leave you wanting more. Like an exquisite musical chocolate, their music almost melts in your mouth. I find myself with either their "Kenotic" album or this EP by my bedside, as I start to get in the mood to drift into sleep. You probably should too...
Hammock have done it again!!!.......2005-11-01
Well what do ya know. Hammock is back with another great release. Hammock are a band who completely surround the listener with sound.I could only imagine how large they would sound in concert. There is a nice uncomplicated feel to their music. Even though it's quite complex. A lot of bands could really benefit from learning that trick from these guys. The listening of their music is an experience that is truly one that you will never regret. The guitar lines and effects are there as usual. But somehow they managed to top theirlast release Kenotic. Which was something I didn't think was possible.
The disc starts off with the title track. A nice subtle drone and distortion linger throughout. The music just floats around your headputting you in a trance like state. The relaxing ambience only getsbetter with each track. This album maybe a little slower then the last one. But none the more effective. "Birds Flying In Sequence" starts out
with a nice tribal feel. Once the guitar and bass take control. The song then begins to take on true form. I can only imagine how these guys feel when they listen to their finished project. They must be so proud.
The natural beauty of their releases is something every person should experience. Undeniably there's power in the voice and atmosphere of their music. Hammock are the musical equivalent of the most relaxing body massage. This release deserves so much attention. I hope after reading this a few of you will feel obligated to purchase this masterpiece.
another great release from Hammock.......2005-10-27
On Stranded Under Endless Sky, Monarch plays the most soothing, heartbreaking music. The CD features 4 tracks of ambient guitar work, minimal percussion, found noises, and strings, but as always with Hammock that mere descrption falls short. The Ep begins with the title track, a lethargic study in lingering guitar melodies that are wrapped in a dreamy haze. After meandering about, the song lingers in a moment of echoing delay and swirling atmospherics. The second track is a the graceful "Birds Flying in Sequence". The song is a pastoral song, with a simple, repetitive, but highly hypnotic melodu playing over soft drones and muted percussion. The song builds beautifully, before erupting into an expansive melody without losing the introspective mood. "Always Wishing You Were Somewhere Else" is as wistful as the title suggests, with a dark undertone of drones and ambience supporting a singular guitar line that bends throughout its melody. As the song progresses it portrays with clarity the longing and regret expressed in the song's title. Finally, the ever-so-quiet "An Empty Field" rounds out the Ep...this song slowly and queitly builds with its distant guitar lines that are variously effected. Part way through the over 9 minute song (and not one second of it is unengaging), the melody changes, and the song incorporates a gorgeous cello part that likewise soothes and inspires.
I remember first hearing Hammock's music in the dark coldness of late December last year. As the seasons change now in my part of the world, with the chil lreturning in the wind and the leaves falling to the ground, I can't think of a better EP to be the soundtrack of autumn. Or, for that matter, any season in which one wants to connect with the organic and eternal. A beautiful EP that deserves to be listened to by many many people. I highly recommend it!
Simply Beautiful Music.......2005-10-24
I have been an avid fan of Marc Byrd since I first heard his debut disc with Common Children back in college. While several people just tossed it aside as another post-grunge CD, I could hear something in the music that set it apart from the rest of the group. After a follow-up CD that was phenomenal and a short hiatus, the band reconvened to release the stunning, "In Between Time". This CD is the beginning of a transition that has become fully realized with his new band, Hammock.
Hammock introduced themselves with "Kenotic" and it was an instant hit amongst the shoegaze/post-rock scene. Shortly after this release, Marc and Andrew set up shop to lay down the four tracks that comprise the, "Stranded Under Endless Sky" EP. I can honestly say that these 4 songs are the strongest material to date from the band. I find myself listening to this release much more than the Kenotic release. The arrangements are beautiful and are much more peaceful than the debut full-length. We also are graced with more cello from the ever-talented Matt Slocum. As the seasons begin to change and the air becomes crisper and cooler, you can bet that this EP will be in heavy rotation as the seasons begin to change for us.
I have had the pleasure of working with the guys on this release and was able to offer a vinyl version of the record in a limited pressing.

Amazing........2006-10-02
Hammock has truely created a masterpiece. One of my favorite records ever. It flows through emotions and makes emotions flow. It's lovely to listen to while watching a late summer sky, driving through fall foliage on a back road in New England, or just relaxing. Layers of guitars and electronic flourishes. With a few whispered vocals in a couple songs. I would tell anyone to buy this. This album makes life much more beautiful. Stand out tracks would be, The Air Between Us, Before the Celebration, and The Rising Tide. Although ALL of them are fantastic. 5 out of 5. Without a question. I would like The Air Between Us to be played at my wedding.
AS I LAY DREAMING..........2005-11-20
Kenotic charms the listener with gauzy, textural pieces alternating with more rhythmic, foward moving numbers. What really sets Hammock apart from all the other bands of this genre are the great single note and chordal guitar hooks dispersed throughout this excellent disk.
Kenotic is reminiscent of the timeless sounds of the amazing bands of the mid to late 90's Michigan scene. Early Windy and Carl and Auburn Lull come to mind. This is not to say that Hammock have not forged their own blissful sound, because they certainly have. This CD is ample proof.
Hypnotic.......2005-06-24
This album lulls me into a blissful reverie. I know it's not scientific, and you'd probably prefer a run-down on every song. But let me say this: until recently, I had them in my playlist at Rhapsody and turned to them again and again and again and --. Finally I broke down and bought the CD, more to reward the band for bringing such joy to my life than out of a need for ownership. This music dwells in loveliness: swirls of cello, echoing female vocals (Sirens luring my boat to the rocks!), big beefy bass and washes of aching guitar. This is music for Sunday morning or late night drives, cascading and spiraling through an enchanted world. If you need a recharge on your beauty meter, consider giving this album the run of your music-delivery device. I once saw a bumper sticker "MUSIC SAVES" from my favorite band, The Verve. Well, this music is soul therapy. I LOVE it with all my heart.
Americana with loads of reverb.......2005-05-09
Wow, this is pretty. If one had to assign a genre here, "instrumental atmospheric post-rock" might do. Heavily delayed and effected guitars form soothing soundscapes, with low-key bass and drums accompaniment. Occasionally female vocals (mixed way back a la My Bloody Valentine) and cello add color. Some musical reference points might be the Cocteau Twins or the Verve's first album as covered by Bill Frisell. Like Frisell, Hammock expertly convey the quiet openness of rural America, though with fewer quirks and more bliss. Despite the stubbornly diatonic harmonies, there is much skill and subtlety here.
Great transition from Inbetween Time era Common Children.......2005-04-27
Not much that I can add that has not already been said. I predict that in a year or so this band will be just as popular as Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai and Godspeed You Black Emperor. There is a 4 song 12" coming out soon on Republic of Texas Recordings [www.republicoftexasrecordings.com] so everyone should keep an eye out for that.

True Ambience.......2006-06-16
Ambient music means different things to different people.
From the background drones of Eno's early defining ambient music projects, and the throbbing electronic improvs of T. Dream, Ashra Temple, and K. Schulze, to the melody driven epics of Vangelis, or even the more "pop" oriented hits from Enigma.
Hammock, (Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson, create a modern impressionism that has added a new horizon to the ambient panorama.
To me ambient means texture and mood take the helm from vocals, defined interpretation, and ego.
Hammock hits all the marks with not only this album, but all 3 releases.
With the first 2, ambience merges with a gentle influence from shoegazer and alternative rock. On "The Sleepover Series", Marc delves into pure ambience, with just the shimmering, melodic textures and atmospheres from the earlier albums left standing alone.
I love all 3 albums and can't rate them highly enough.
Hammock does it again.......2006-05-27
I own all Hammock works and had been waiting to get this one. Well, I shouldn't have. This album by Marc Byrd's musical brainchild soothes and works perfectly for people who need to calm down before going to bed, to put to rest all the noise of the day, all those mental conversations that are going on long after the meetings and the craze of every day life is over.
Although you may be thinking so, "The Sleep-Over Series, Vol. 1" is not New Age. Think of it more as a soft post-rock, atmospheric ambient album that will touch you deeply every time you listen to it. Just as powerful as "Kenotic" and "Stranded Under Endless Sky", it resonates strongly with your innermost thoughts and the search for internal peace.
Brilliant, beautifuly-crafted drone, .......2006-02-16
Here is a re-posting of the review of the album from somewherecold.com; I heartily agree their take on "The Sleepover Series [Volume 1]." This album is brilliant. Simply brilliant. It's great for those night-time drives, or simply relaxing after a long day.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: check out Hammock, if you haven't done so already. You almost certainly won't regret it.
----------------------
From the opening moments, the music is quieting, cutting through the busyness and clamour of life with floating guitar lines. All of the varying commitments in life seem to vanish in the haze of languid drones, leaving the listener to bask solely in the moment.
It makes sense that the music which breathes over the listener in such a placating manner would be packaged with a picture of a praying sculpture and given the name The Sleepover Series [Volume 1]. Created mainly by Marc Byrd, ½ of the new ambient-drone-space-postrock darlings Hammock (but also featuring generous contributions from the other ½ of Hammock, Andrew Thompson), The Sleepover Series [Volume 1] is a study in deliberately soothing textures designed to give the listener space to reflect. And, similar to Hammock's other 2005 releases (the full-length Kenotic and the Stranded Under Endless Sky EP), The Sleepover Series [Volume 1] succeeds in capturing an other-worldly mood of contemplation and serenity that speaks to the listener's soul.
Following in the broad footsteps of bands like Stars of the Lid/The Dead Texan and the mellower moments of Windy and Carl, The Sleepover Series [Volume 1] smothers the listener in varying densities of delayed guitar drones. Featuring no percussion or vocals, this full-length is a true atmospheric drone CD. Byrd's approach to music on this release is to fashion slowly evolving music that conveys without words stilling notions that are hinted to in the titles of the songs. "Moon Through the Branches", "Empty Page/Blue Sky", "Dropping Off", "Just Before Breathing", "Still Point", and "No Stopping the Sea" all demonstrate to Byrd's unique talent for capturing ethereal moments in music. Due to each song's wonderful and encompassing mood, and given the nature of the music, it truly is difficult to pick stand-out tracks on the CD. The Sleepover Series [Volume 1] is meant to be digested as a whole. Still, some tracks deserve a mention for curious listeners. "Empty Page/Blue Sky" is the only track attributed to Hammock (as opposed to Marc Byrd), and as such, it does sound a bit different from the other tracks, featuring a slightly darker mood and more involved guitar melodies, as well as more detailed musical accents. "Dropping Off" is 15 minutes of dark and slightly foreboding sounds. But, the highlight of the disc (if one is to be chosen) is the gloriously delicate "Still Point", which features 24 + minutes (!) of angelic drones hovering and slightly mutating in the air. To begin to pick out the most appealing moments of The Sleepover Series [Volume 1], though, proves futile, as every moment of music on the disc leads to the other in a patiently and masterfully orchestrated symphony of subtlety.
In the end, Byrd (and Hammock) have again created a beautiful work of art. This talented duo has released yet another sub-conscious masterpiece of gorgeous music. Perfect for star-gazing, peering out your window at the snow falling, or even to fall asleep to, The Sleepover Series [Volume 1] is a dazzling must-have for ambient/atmospheric music lovers. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Very enjoyable!.......2002-07-01
I've seen Pete Muller play live in NYC several times. His songs can grab you with a story, and then keep you there with some fabulous piano playing and jazz-meets-folk style arrangements. Lisa Batten shines on backing vocals, and Ben Hoyumpa provides some great percussion. Catherine Popper's bass playing also compliments the arrangements well. Favorite songs for me on the CD are: Run Away, Not That Man, Danielle, Choose What You Amplify and Chasing Another Man's Dream. If you're looking to listen to songs that tell interesting stories, and you want to hear some hot piano playing, check out this CD.

A pleasingly mature, complex album of medative rhythms.......1998-11-19
Ganger's first album is an innovative blend of ambient, Brian Eno-esque guitar work/assorted sounds and lyrical melodies. While most tracks are instrumental or have words mixed at almost inaudible background levels, the effect emphasizes the integrated whole of the music. Overall, the entire album is richly layered and mellow with a very compelling complexity.
city of sound.......1998-11-04
so many bands try and make what could be deemed "futuristic" music and just slap a drum n bass rhythm or a keyboard sound on top of a conventional song. what makes ganger so special is their desire to create genuinely new MUSIC. Hammock Style sees a band completely immersed in their own sound. They are never so comfortable with the music they make that they show off though and the whole LP is the sound of a band on the edge of, and completely excited by, the sounds they have created. No other band in recent years has developed something as original and free of cliche as Ganger have here which makes Hammock Style an essential purchase.
Exciting sound for those who want something different.......1998-10-26
Just when you think you have Ganger music figured out, they change the sound, and wham, you have to rethink. This CD is quite unlike previous recordings and each track offers something vibrantly different from the previous one. The vocals are minimal yet intriguing and the musi complex--you find yourself listening again and again and picking up on new threads all the time. Great stuff from a group that makes its own trends rather than follows others, and then reworks those trends in new ways so that you never get tired of what's on offer. Check it out.
A challenging new sound from a revamped group.......1998-10-10
I would strongly recommend this CD for anyone who wants to be challenged by a unique intellectual sound. This CD has many levels and every time you listen to it, you will hear something new. Expect to be surprised! And yet it is remarkably easy to listen to. This can be mood music at its best or it can be a stimulating listen depending on what you feel like that day. One thing you won't be is bored...

Flow is exactly what it is. This isn't feel good music, it's feel GREAT! "Remember" is such a good song, I can't get over it!
kick back and let it flow into your ears.......2002-12-31
How refreshing to discover a new, hot band that relies on the quality of its music instead of the number of piercings on its lead singer. An old fan of Ten Mile Tide, I love to hear this six-member group complement each other to create a soul-soothing sound. While they kick up big energy at their live shows, "Flow" is more the type of thing you listen to during a long soak in the tub, a roadtrip, or a train ride across the mountains. Or it just helps you imagine you're doing those things.
How to describe them? They're folk, they're rock, they're even a little bluegrass. The type of music that's welcoming instead of intimidating, that's both serious and light. They can sing about a girl's innermost emotions ("San Francisco"), and then move on to a song that's all about getting wasted ("Never Gonna Drink Again").
I can't wait to see where this band heads next. Tip: you can also check them out on kazaa - they have a few songs featured there. I recommend "Blue and Sudden."
flows very smoothly in my stereo.......2002-12-12
This is one of my all time favorite albums. I got it last summer at a tmt show and can't stop listening to it. The guys are really musically talented and Flow shows off all their skill. Some songs are very danceable and others are very mellow- like Blue and Sudden or San Francisco are extremely mellow and beautiful.
It is hard to classify this album as just pop rock or folk rock or jam music. The songs are each really well done- and are a mix of bluegrass/rock/pop/jam band I suppose.
I would recommend this album or seeing them live if you live near where they play.

This is Chad's first album but it has been a long time coming, with a lot of thought and hard work put into it. If you appreciate the things that make Texas Music the best in Country Music, then don't pass this one over. Great songwriting, great voice, and a true love for what he's doing. Not to mention a great live show. Show your support for Texas Music and musicians by picking up a copy of this cd and checking out a live show.
