With their third album, the Beasties transformed themselves from smart-ass punks with a hip-hop jones into a playful live funk band with some solid rhymes, assisted by the extraordinary keyboardist Mark Ramos Nishita. A couple of tracks look back to their old school rap roots, and they still deploy goofy samples like nobody's business, but they're mostly making their own grooves (including some instrumentals worthy of being sampled in their own right). Their universalist world-view results in some excellent, off-the-wall fusions--the metalloid bump that forms the funk pulse of "So What'cha Want," Sly Stone's "Time for Livin'" transformed into a hard-rock bomber--but they don't have to prove how clever they are any more, and they're stronger and more humane for it. --Douglas Wolk

Still A Favorite.......2007-02-20
This album was released when I was sixteen,I was already a big Beasties fan but this album simply blew me away.As original and awesome as Paul's Boutique is,this is the one I keep going back to.I have listened to this album literally hundreds of times and it still gets played often. It always cheers me up.One of the best ever.
Flawless.......2006-12-01
There is not a single track on this cd which is not absolutely brilliant. It is a true masterpiece and listening to it always brings joy to my soul, even after listening to it literally hundreds of times over the years.
raw energy.......2006-11-08
in my opinion, this album is their most energentic. After two albums of rappin' over beats, they finally dust off their instruments and jam out. At first, this was going to be just an instrumental/hardcore punk album, but good ol' Mario C convinced them to lay down some raps. This album really allows you to see the depth of the Beastie Boys. They've got some great hip-hop tracks (Pass The Mic, So What'cha Want, Stand Together), rock tracks (Gratitude, Time For Livin'), instrumentals (Something's Got To Give, In 3's) and some just jam tracks (a little hip hop mixed with just lettin' loose on with the instruments) (Jimmy James, The Maestro, Live At P.J.'s). All the hip-hop tracks are done over pre-recorded instrumentals they laid down. This album also has one of the most underrated Beastie Boys songs of all time, Professor Booty. In my opinion, this is their most diverse album. Ill Communication is very similar, it just lacks the energy of Check Your Head. Must have album.

You have got to be kidding me.......2006-09-09
Simply unreal. What happened to the B Boys? The time they took between Paul's Boutique and this album was very well spent. This album exudes creativity and originality. It's funky, it's sharp, it's just plain fun. Boatloads of fun. The instrumentals are a real treat, but Pass The Mic, So What'cha Want, Lighten Up, and Jimmy James are the best tunes. Seriously, folks, one of the best 5 hip hop albums ever. 14 years later I still listen to it monthly.
Thee BEST.......2006-07-02
To begin, this record has more intensity than any other Beasties disc. Songs like the aforementioned "So What'cha Want", "Pass the mic" and "Finger Lickin' Good" compliment the more laid numbers like "Pow" and tracks like "Gratitude" and the opener "Jimmy James". No joke, these guys were sent to kill, and all we can do is watch.

Product Description
This album is the first independent release from Overise. Recorded from January 2004 to February 2005, this album was a long process that has finally paid off for the band. The long production process was certainly "A Long Story" that many will want to read more about after listening to this CD for the first time. For those who have yet to hear this band or those who have yet to pick up this CD, do so if you enjoy cathy alternative/rock music. You certainly won't be disappointed.

Awesome.......2006-01-27
Yo This album is awesome! Absolutely check it out. Joey's got a great voice and the harmonies with Mark are great. Although there are only a few songs on it, Overise is on the rise and buying this album will help them out so much.
Same old...same old!.......2005-10-18
If you like emo then you will like this album. If you are like me and absolutely despise emo, hate emo because this is the so-called new "punk" when they obviously have no idea where punk rock came from, want to cut your wrists when you hear an emo song on radio/tv (which is why I no longer do either) and cannot see how it has made its way into the mainsteam, you will absolutely hate this album. I just dont understand how anyone can like this music, beside someone who has just broke up with thier girlfriend or is a person who only listens to what MTV puts in thier face. Please for the love of God and all that is holy stear clear of this album and all emo in general. That and rap are the downfall to real music...that is all!

Beastie Boys - New York State Of Mind(Mixed By DJ Green Lantern) - featuring music from Beastie Boys including remixes, classics & more...
Customer Reviews:
Pauls Boutique, 15 years later.......2007-01-19
As anyone knows, the Beastie Boys made their greatest album in 1989, Pauls Boutique, as funky party album filled with nonstop samples and no filler. Well New York State of Mind is like Paul's Botique 15 years later. DJ Green Lantern is an exxcelent DJ, and he makes all the tracks feel as fresh and catchy, if not catchier, as when they were first released. Some moments on this album are absolute, indescribable strokes of genius, such as putting Biggie Smalls on the hook for "Hey Ladies," Ludacris rapping "When I move you move" during the chorus of "Body Movin'." But the true highlight of the album is "Looking Down The Barrell of a Gun," which uses the instrumental from Jay-Z's "U Dont Know," and a Biggie Smalls rap to create one of the most indescribable jolts of pure adrenaline in recent years. There are also some new tracks loosely based on some of the Beasties' older songs, such as Busta Rhymes doing an excellent modern version of "Paul Revere," and better yet, MOP doing a updated "No Sleep Till Brooklyn." The only track that doesn't quite seem to fit is a Clipse freestlye over the instrumental for "Pass the Mic." However, that track is also excellent and from the beggining to end, New York State of Mind is undeniably an absolute hip-hop masterpeice, perhaps even matching Pauls Botique.
