Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

A surprise since it was not what I expected........2006-05-10
This album was a surprised to me the first time I listen to it. I have been a great fan of DTS since I first heard Sex without Bodies. Which is the problem I had with this record at first. I expected one thing and ended up with something else. After a couples of listens, I grew to love this album. It has a great flow to it. Kelly voice have never souned better. It truned out what it alays intented to be and that was a very nice jazz album. If you looking for Sex without Bodies, this is not the album for you. If you looking for a honest nightclub type jazz band, this will be right up your alley.
Superbly jazzy mood.......2005-08-05
Once in a while you stumble upon a rough gem. This cd is such a gem. It contains deliciously jazzy songs. Some with a positive beat, such as the fantastic 'dog's life' and 'everlasting no', some with a slightly gloomy touch, such as 'small black heart'.
It's unpolished sound is completely in line with the music, and adds to the atmosphere.
Kelly Flints voice is a delight, and fits with the change in moods. It reminded me of a Dutch singer-songwriter, Fay Lovsky.
The only disappointment is the opening song, which is quite monotonous and, actually, boring.
Still, I can easily forgive them for that, considering the enjoyment of the other songs.
If you like this style, I strongly recommend trying Working Nights from Working Week, the absolute number one jazzy-pop albums ever produced.
Playful, funny and sophisticated new sounds for the summer.......2005-06-08
I've been a "Dave's True Story" fan for years. Kelly Flint has one of the best voices around. Dave Kantor's music and lyrics are intelligent, original, very sophisticated and great listening. Kelly delivers them with terific style. This new album represents a development in their style that is exciting and fun. This is Cole Porter for the 21st Century.
Best yet new NYC jazz sound.......2005-06-07
The best music and the best variety of styles yet for this sleek and witty NY band. More romantic than the earlier CDs, "Nature" still features the excellent wit of Dave Cantor's lyrics, and the vocals by Kelly Flint are beautiful. Her voice wraps around some of the lines in a traditional ballad way, but surprise twists are reflected in her off-hand, loose jazzy style on others.
The opening song, "World in Which We Live" is instantly likeable and offers images of a romantic world tour--but of course not an ordinary romance. The disc ends with a seductive "Blue Nile" that sticks in memory, and "Chasing the White Line Down" and "Sandman" are going to be DTS classics.
People who like artists from Delbert McClinton to Diana Krall will find "Nature" a wonderful listen.
Evolutionary.......2005-06-02
I admit at first I had reservations about Nature. My significant other doesn't like it feeling that Nature sounds like some other group. But I feel DTS is developing as a band-"moved to the burbs"? Nope, just a week-end trip. Messages "unclear and self-contradicting"? I submit they are broader and more profound. C'mon, what influence would the Beatles have had if they just put out different versions of "Meet The Beatles"? DTS is just evolving. The wit is still there (Dog's Life) and so is the clever word play and depth of feeling(Everlasting No and Cinder)just to a different beat. Also, on no previous album have I heard DTS sound so joyfull in making music as they do on Nature. Still an original. BTW,whtshername is Kelly Flint,a good,talented person!

Better than Isis.......2007-06-09
I have no idea which came first, but I have just listened to Oceanic and Panopticon, (not for the first time) and am just finishing listening to True Nature Unfolds.
It's better on my first listen. As the other two reviewers said, if you're fan of Isis, you are going to like this, even it is copying their style of music. If was a member of Isis, I'd be flattered.

Pretty Decent........2006-07-09
Fans of Isis/Neurosis/Pelican check out this album. I bought it about 2 years ago and still find myself enjoying it fairly often. This band isn't exactly groundbreaking, but I think they deserve a little more attention than they're getting.
It is sort of similar to Isis, although not nearly as brilliant. It contains very slow, sludgy, yet melodic riffing, Deep death growls, and is largely instrumental. Some of the songs actually create a pretty cool atmosphere, kind of a "cold" feeling... but not in that grim-northern-black-metal-forest-troll kind of way. The songs are progressive for the most part, going through different movements rather than a boring repetitive song structure, and there is quite a bit of variation such as some saxophones, some female vocals, and calmer non-distorted parts mixed in.
Not nearly the most treasured thing in my collection, but a good listen and a good purchase. It looks like they've just had a new album come out named "Noir" but I haven't been able to find it anywhere yet.
Not Original But Good Nonetheless.......2005-06-01
Since no one has reviewed this yet I thought it would be good for my first review. I'll keep it short. If you listen to Isis, particularly Oceanic and Panopticon, you will find yourself in familiar territory. Callisto is similar to Isis in that they prefer churning power-chord driven instrumetal with sparse vocals which usually consist of monotone screams/growls. They differ in two ways. 1) Isis is better at producing dynamics between soft and melodic and crushing walls of noise. 2) Callisto sound more "European" than Isis in that their progressions often have that more minor/dissonant/operatic feel to them. Sorry that I have basically only compared one band to another, but it is the easiest way to describe this album. I would give Isis a five but I enjoy these guys as well. If you have never listened to Isis or Callisto what you should expect from either is down-tempo metal riffs with emphasis on progressions and instrumentation rather than vocals. What you should not expect from them is commercialized, radio-friendly, single-ready music. When you listen to these bands, you have to devote some time to them. If you're like me, you'll find it's well worth the wait.

Touches My Heart.......2005-08-16
The music that Gwilda performs on this album never fails to touch my heart. Both the traditional songs and the beautiful songs written by Gwilda are performed with such heart felt connection to the source of love that I am drawn along with Gwilda everytime I listen to her music. In addition the wisdom and prophecy in her original music deepens with time. The songs do seem to tell the story that is unfolding in our evolution at this time.
